The family had just moved to Rhode Island, and the young woman was feeling sad. After all, it was Mother’s Day and 800 miles separated her from her parents in Ohio.
She had called her mother that morning to wish her a happy Mother’s Day. As they talked, the young woman could almost smell the purple lilacs (丁香(dīngxiāng)) hanging outside her parents’ back door.
Later, when she mentioned to her husband how she missed those lilacs, he jumped up from his chair. “I know where we can find you all the lilacs you want, he said. “Get the kids and come on.〞
So off they went, driving on the country roads of northern Rhode Island. Eventually, he stopped the car.
“Come with me,〞he said. “Over that hill is an old cave, and there are lilacs all around it. Go and pick a few.〞
The woman wandered among the lilacs. Carefully, she picked some out. She was in no hurry, enjoying each blossom as a rare and delicate treasure. Finally, though, they returned to their car for the trip home. When they were almost home, she suddenly shouted to her husband, “Stop the car. Stop right here!〞In a second, the woman was out of the car and hurrying up a nearby grassy slope with the lilacs still in her arms. At the top of the hill was a nursing home and, because it was such a beautiful spring day, the patients were outdoors.
The young woman found an elderly patient sitting in her wheelchair, alone. She handed her some lilacs. The old woman lifted her head and smiled. Then the young woman left. As the car pulled away, the woman in the wheelchair waved and held the lilacs tightly.
The mother told her kids that she didn’t know the old woman but she needed those flowers more than she did.

After years of trying, our neighbor, convinced my parents that ice fishing would be a fun winter break from our Minnesota dairy farm. Before that, their idea of entertainment involved driving to the countryside to see how the neighbors’crops were growing.
My parents eventually built a fish house and set it up on Wood Lake, 30 minutes away in Wisconsin. Our favorite fishing spot was across the lake. Every time we arrived, somebody had usually made a clear path across the ice. The fish houses were together at the best fishing spots, forming a neighborhood of sorts.
Our house was large enough, so all four of us could fish at the same time.
You’d think ice fishing would be cold, but we had a small stove inside, and we put snow around the bottom of the house to keep the wind from blowing underneath.
Besides the thrill of watching your bobber (浮标(fúbiāo)) dip below the water, lunch was always the highlight of the day. Mom would fry pork or hamburgers on a grill. The smell of cooking meat was the envy of every other fish house in the neighborhood. Our days passed with a mix of quiet time and family chatter. We talked about the farm or school. And of course, we shared fishing advice. My brother and I also took breaks and explored the snow and ice. We were careful not to make much noise on the ice close to the houses, as we all were sure that it would scare the fish away.
Part of the fun of ice fishing was learning to understand and trust the sounds of the frozen lake. People who have never tried ice fishing may not think it sounds very exciting, but it was for us. Fishing trips were an adventure. We didn’t always catch fish, but we always brought h ome great memories of a day with family and friends

31. What did the author think could be the best part of ice fishing?

Next time you raise an eyebrow at the views of your partners, friends, siblings (兄弟姐妹) or colleagues, remember they could be helping to make you smarter.
New research shows that intelligence is not fixed but can be improved throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually challenging (考验(kǎoyàn)智慧(zhìhuì)的) careers. The study challenges the commonly held belief that intelligence is fixed by the age of about 18.
Current scientific consensus (一共识(ɡònɡ shí)) suggests that intelligence is controlled by genes, with environmental factors such as schooling and
nutrition playing a part up to this age. After this point, IQ scores become steady.
But James Flynn, professor of political studies and psychology at the University of Otago in New Zealand, argues that people can upgrade their own intelligence throughout their lives. He believes intellectual stimulation (刺激(cìjī)) from others is imp ortant as “the brain seems to be rather like a muscle — the more you use it, the stronger it gets〞. However, the opposite is also true - so people sharing a home or workplace with those who are intellectually disabled risk seeing their IQ levels fall as a result.
Professor Flynn analyzed US intelligence tests from the last 65 years and created new IQ “age tables〞. He found a bright 10-year-old with brothers and sisters of average intelligence will suffer a 5-10-point IQ disadvantage compared to a similar child with equally bright brothers and sisters. However, children with a low IQ could gain 6-8 points by having brighter brothers and sisters and special education treatment to help pull them up.
Professor Flynn concluded that although genetics and early life experiences determine about 80% of intelligence, the remaining 20% is linked to lifestyle. This means people can raise their IQ, or allow it to fall, by 10 points or more. He suggests the best way to improve IQ levels is to socialize with brighter friends, and find an intellectually challenging job.
32. What did people use to believe according to the passage?
A. People’s IQ levels fall as they age.
B. It is wise to share family members’ views.
C. People cannot improve their intelligence during adulthood.
D. Doing something challenging is good for one’s intelligence.
33. The underlined word “upgrade〞in Paragraph 4 probably means “〞.
A. control
B. train
C. keep
D. improve
34. Which can help improve one’s intelligence according to Professor Flynn?
A. Making many friends.
B. Staying with smarter people.
C. Doing exercise every day.
D. Learning from brothers or sisters.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To inform.
B. To advertise.
C. To entertain.
D. To persuade.

A hobby is an investment of time. It also can be an investment of money and commitment. Many people choose to develop more than one type of hobby.
1. When it comes to choosing the hobby, consider the following factors.
Hobbies are usually an activity of some sort that brings out a certain skill that you have. When you have a talent like painting or woodworking, it can be easy to determine which hobby suits your skill. 2. Skill can be developed and challenged as you go along. It is not a necessary requirement. A hobby is fitting because you love it, not because you’re a professional at it. Some people particularly enjoy taking part in hobbies that they can do in a group with others. It can be a lot more fun to become a member of a hobby group than to sit alone in your basement. 3. It’s important to share interests and network with other hobby enthusiasts that do what you do.
Hobbies are generally an activity that you undertake because of the joy it brings you. Of course many people have discovered the joy that also comes with a hobby that earns you a living. 4. Just make sure you make the choice that fits your lifestyle and personal preference.
5. But most of the skilled hobbies like art, building or writing have a series of lessons or tutorials that you can take to further your skills. In some cases it’s a really good idea to take lessons, especially if you are clueless as to where or how to begin. Step by step books for most hobbies can often be found in bookstores as well.
A. However, hobbies don’t have to be skill related.
B. Most hobbies can easily be done within your own home, at your leisure.
C. Look one up or start your own.
D. Read hobby books to learn more about your chosen hobby!
E. Make a list of things that you enjoy or don’t know about.
F. It can be a necessary part of selecting the hobby that is right for you.
G. Whether it’s full time, part time or not at all, you must decide whether your hobby applies to you.
