A
Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.
My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up,we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom
gave me a lot of love. Each night, she seated me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life," You are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it."
At fourteen,I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day,my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said,I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. A year later,I returned to school-walking on my own!
When the Great Depression hit,my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment,I was determined never to be poor again.
Over the years,I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business,we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother's words deeply rooted in my soul,I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later,we had the largest hotel system in the world-Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situations. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

Many parents would like to teach their children English at home, but don’t know how to start. It doesn’t matter if your own English is not perfect. The most important thing is that you are
enthusiastic and that you give your children lots of encouragement and set them an example. Your child will pick up on your enthusiasm for the language. Don’t worry if your child doesn’t start speaking English immediately. They will need a certain amount of time to absorb the language. Be patient, and they will begin to speak English in their own time.
Establish a routine for your English time at home. It is better to have short, frequent sessions than long, infrequent ones. Fifteen minutes is enough for very young children. You can gradually make sessions longer as your child gets older. Keep the activities short and various in order to hold your child’s attention.
Try to do certain activities at the same time every day. Children feel more comfortable and confident when they know what to expect. For example, you could play an English game every day after school, or read an English story with your children before bedtime. If you have space at home, you can create an English corner where you keep anything connected to English, for example books, games, DVDs or things that your children have made. Repetition is the most important – Children often need to hear words and phrases many times before they feel ready to produce them themselves.
Children learn naturally when they are having fun. Flashcards(抽认卡) are a great way to teach and revise vocabulary and there are many different games which you can play with flashcards. Whatever your way, the most important thing is to relax, have fun and make learning English an enjoyable experience for both you and your child.
28. What should parents keep in mind?
A. Learning a second language actively.
B. Assessing children’s language level.
C. Setting a good example for children.
D. Spending more time learning a language.
29. Why does the author suggest short frequent sessions?
A. Because parents will lose patience easily.
B. Because children can concentrate on the activities.
C. Because children have other things to finish.
D. Because children take little interest in English.
30. Which is the most important way for parents to help children learn English?
A. Repeating the words children have learned.
B. Reading an interesting story after work.
C. Taking children frequently to an English corner.
D. Teaching children to learn English as early as possible.
31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Flashcards are the most popular with children.
B. Parents shouldn’t expect too much from their children.
C. Choosing a single way is the most important thing.
D. Parents should create a relaxing learning environment.
D
Nowadays top performing sportsmen earn huge amounts of money compared to people in other professions. Some people consider it a reasonable approach. However, there are a few who think it is unreasonable. This essay will discuss both the views in detail.
Sports professionals with outstanding performance should be overpaid mainly because it is a short-lived career which requires hard work compared to other professions. This field demands a strict, trained life with extensive physical efforts, consistent practice, a fixed diet schedule to bring pride and glory to the country. Due to such tough requirements, people in this field have an average career span of 10-15 years. As sports professionals have limited tenure(任期), they should be rewarded with high monetary gains to acknowledge their excellent performance.
However, there are a few who think that top performing sportsmen and women should not have high salaries as it is a biased(片面的) approach. They feel that there are other key professions which are more valuable to the country compared to the sports field. For example, the professions, like doctors, social workers, work for the betterment of the society. Their efforts not only help to reduce the social problems existing in the community, but they also contribute to providing a healthy environment. As a result, they significantly contribute to the growth of the country. Thus, their efforts should be equally recognized along with the sports professionals.
In my opinion, although there are some logical reasons for huge earnings of the top performing players, people from other professions should also be equally appreciated in terms of abundant monetary benefits for their outstanding contribution, as all the professions are critical in their own field and contributes to the overall development of the country.
To conclude, sports people delivering excellent performance should not be overpaid in comparison to other professionals who make a significant contribution to the society.
32. What is a key reason to overpaying sports professionals with outstanding performance?
A. Their honor to the country is great.
B. Their career is comparatively short.
C. They get trained longer than others.
D. They are of the first class worldwide.
33. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Some people look down on women.
B. V aluing sports can lead to prejudice.
C. Doctors have lower status in society.
D. Not all professions can get considerable incomes.
34. What does “critical” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Skilled.
B. Important.
C. Learned.
D. Famous.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Should Top Sportsmen Be Paid Huge Amounts?
B. People’s Var ious Attitudes to Top Sportsmen
C. Top Sportsmen Bring Honor to Their Homeland
D. Overpaying Top Sportsmen Harms Other Professions

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中,选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. 36 For example, we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice-cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. 37
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every
time. 38
There is a third reason for this situation. 39 They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this a pastime(消遣), it also give them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.
The above are the main reasons for this problem. 40 And prevent them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
A. The more you eat, the shorter life you will live.
B. And this will carry on throughout their lives.
C. Then how to solve the problems?
D. I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
E. Children these days take very little exercise.
F. So we have to encourage young people to be more active.
G. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children will buy less takeaway food. 第三部分英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)
