It is winter in many parts of the world. For some areas, that means snow. Maybe even lots of snow. If you don’t have to drive in it or remove it, snow can be very beautiful. When snow covers everything around you, the world looks like a “winter wonderland”. That is the name of a very popular song about winter. Richard Smith and Felix Bernard wrote the song back in 1934. There are hundreds of recordings of this happy song.
But winter is not always such a beautiful and happy time. It’s cold outside. You try hard
to keep warm. The days are darker and shorter. The sun rarely shines. The leaves on the trees are brown. It isn’t surprising that some people are sad in winter. And some people dream about being somewhere else where it’s warm and pretty—like the State of California. The Mamas and the Papas recorded this famous song California Dreaming.
During the 1960s, many other famous rock groups released songs about winter. Here is a poetic song by Simon and Garfunkel called A Hazy Shade of Winter. They sing about life and hope and possibilities.
In 1968, the group Blood, Sweat and Tears recorded this gentle, sad song about winter. They sing about a lost love and forgotten memories in Sometimes in Winter.
In the early 1990s, Tori Amos wrote and recorded the beautiful song called Winter. She enjoyed singing about winter when she was a child.
Finally, on a happier note comes this song written and recorded by Fountains of Wayne in 2003. They sing about a snowstorm in a New England town. Nothing unusual there. But instead of being sad or tense about the snow, they write a song about it.
21. When is snow beautiful?
A. When people drive in it.
B. When people don’t have to take it away.
C. When it has snowed heavily.
D. When people sing in the snow.

To tell you the truth, I am not interested in owning a mobile phone except for use in an emergency, for ordinary mobile phone service is very expensive. How would I get help if I were in trouble or in danger? A good friend told me about a product she thought would settle my problem. It’s SOS phone—a mobile phone service designed for emergency use.
With the touch of a button, the SOS phone will connect me to a roadside emergency service, a 911 service or a trained SOS operator, 24 hours a day. If I even need help, I know it’s just a phone call away.
By pressing the 4 “Tow” button, I’ll be connected with my emergency roadside service provider. Or, if I don’t have one, the SOS operator can suggest one to me and get in touch with them immediately.
The “911” button will connect me to 911 emergency service in my area, and best of all, the call is completely free!
If I just want to call home to tell my husband and children something necessary, I can. By pressing the “Call” button. I’ll reach an operator. When I ask the operator to call home, I will be connected automatically. And because the Call Center has my most 10 used numbers, I don’t even have to recite the number.
Unlike ordinary mobile phone plans, the SOS phone doesn’t have any minimum usage requirements or other promises that could change the price I expect to pay each month.
25. The writer enjoys using the SOS phone because .

Is there anything we can do about protecting the environment? Let’s discuss how to protect it.
Many organizations, at a local, national and international level, devote to protecting the environment. Together they form the “green movement”. These groups already enjoy a lot of public support, but their most important work is education. Unless people understand how threats to the environment affect them, they won’t know the importance of protecting our environment.
Many farmers support the “green movement”. Some make an effort to protect small areas of woodlands and are careful not to spray these areas with pesticide(杀虫剂). A few have turned their backs on modern methods and use no chemicals at all.
Farming without chemicals is known as organic(有机的)farming. I several countries, organic products have become very popular. Because no chemicals are used to grow the food, there are none to enter the human food chain. By choosing organic produce, people think they are also choosing to save the countryside.
In developing countries, action is finally being taken to save the rainforests by the governments. In Africa, the Ivory Coast recently banned all timber(木材)exports. In central America, the government of Panama made it illegal to cut down trees which are more than five years old. Such actions show great determination because timber exports have been a major source of income.
It is difficult to persuade poor people in developing counties to learn the importance of saving forests. They need more food and want to use fields to grow it on. What we risk losing is not only the enjoyment of nature, but also the contribution of life on this planet.
28. What is this passage mainly about?
A. It is important to build organic farming.
B. We should take some measures to protect our environment.
C. Some ways to protect the environment.
D. Developing countries should make more efforts to protect our planet.
29. According to the passage, what is the most important work to protect the environment?

D. Helping people understand the importance of protecting our environment.
30. Which of the following statements is true?
A. It is easy to persuade poor people in developing countries to protect the environment.
B. People choose organic farming because they think it is friendly to the environment.
C. Organic produce is already popular all over the world.
D. We should ban timber exports all over the world.
31. We would most probably read this passage on a newspaper related to .
A. environment protection
B. traveling news
C. farming industry
D. agriculture practice

Traditional festivals have made a comeback. The Spring Festival celebrations have just ended, Qingming (Tomb Sweeping) Festival is on the way, followed by Duanwu (Dragon Boat) Festival. Later, there will be the Mid-Autumn(Moon) Festival and Chongyand Festival (Senior’s Festival). Chin a currently has about 10,000 traditional festivals among its 56 ethnic groups.
Nobody really questioned whether we needed more holidays until 2004 when a public debate
(讨论)took place about the popularity of some Western festivals and the waning (逐渐减弱的)influ ence of traditional festivals. The key message was: Traditional festivals are “important and therefore they need protection”.
But many people, especially the young, say they are not interested in these festivals. Instead, they are embracing Western festiva ls and holidays such as Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving Day, and even April Fool’s Day.
A commonly heard reason for this thinking is:”Traditional festivals are boring, old stuff” while Western festivals are “much more interesting and exciting”. Meanwhile, concerned scholars want to preserve traditional festivals that “are vital elements of our unique historical legacy(历史遗产), and cultural identity”.
If we really want to save our traditions, we should worry about the lack of content. Take Spring Festival for example. In the past, people did a lot of interesting activities, as shown in popular costume dramas such as Dream of the Red Mansion. But today, most people just eat, drink, let off fireworks, play mahjong or watch gala shows.
To revitalize traditional festivals, we should not blame young people for blindly following Western festivals and Western culture but should change the way we celebrate traditional festivals. For instance, for Qingming Festival, young netizens(网民)are establishing online cemeteries to mourn their deceased family members or deceased pets.
With new forms and novel(新奇的)ideas, I believe traditional festivals can stay forever young and always be appealing(吸引人的), here and abroad.
32. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. We should think of new ways to keep our traditional festivals alive.
B. People are not interested in our traditional festivals.
C. Western festivals and holidays are becoming more and more popular in China.
D. Traditional festivals have been boring for us.
33. The underlined word “revitalize” in Paragraph 6 means .
A. celebrate
B. know more about
C. give new life to
D. be familiar with
34. We can infer from the passage that .
A. China used to have about 10,000 traditional festivals among its 56 ethnic groups
B. Both Chongyang Festival and Valentine’s Day are Chinese traditional festivals
C. Chinese traditional festivals are less attractive to the young
D. People celebrate traditional festivals in the same way as people did in the past
35. According to the passage, which of the following may the author agree to?
A. Western festivals are as important as traditional festivals.
B. We should change the way we celebrate traditional festivals.
C. It’s not neces sary to protect traditional festivals.
D. People had better establish online cemeteries to mourn their deceased family members or pets. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

书面表达
Dear Peter,
I’m sorry to know that you are having a hard time learning Chinese. I’m writing to ofter some suggestions.
To begin with, don’t worry too much about it and trust yourself. As we know, Chinese is one of the most complex languages in the world, so it’s normal for learners to find it difficult in the beginning. Second, take very opportunity to practise speaking Chinese. A proverb goes that practice makes perfect. Besides, read books and watch TV programs in Chinese and make friends with Chinese native speakers, which provide you more chances to use Chinese.
If you follow my advice, I am sure you will find pleasure in learning Chinese.
Yours truly,
Li Hua。
