第一部分阅读(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项
A
Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the U. S. Department of Homeland Security recommends having at least a two - week supply of water and food.
Potatoes
Shelf life:2 to 5 weeks if stored in a cool, dry, dark place
Yukon Gold, red, and fingerling potatoeswill last from two to three weeks. Larger white potatoes can last for three to five weeks. Sweet potatoes have about the same shelf life. Don't store them next to onions, however. The two might go together well in cooking, but raw, each gives off gases and moisture that might cause the other to spoil faster.
Tea
※Shelf life:6 to 12 months past "sell - by" date
Dried tea leaves, whether loose (in a sealed container) or in teabags (in an unopened box) can easily last a year or more if they' re not subjected to damp or humidity. However, the tea does tend to lose flavor over time.
Peanuts
● Shelf life:1 to 2 months
Peanuts in their shell, especially when kept cool and dry, are perfectly happy in the cupboard for as long as two months.
Canned fruits and vegetables
● Shelf life:1 to 2 years past "sell - by” date
Canning is an extremely efficient means of preserving food. Generally speaking, if canned foods aren't subjected to extreme heat, their contents should stay good for two years or more. Be aware, however, of dented cans or those with swollen tops, which may indicate the presence of bacteria inside.
1. Which can go bad faster if stored with onions?
A. Potatoes.
B. Tea.
C. Peanuts.
D. Canned fruits and vegetables.

A. The flavor of tea can always remain the same.

Mark Bertram lost the tips of two fingers at work in 2018 when his hand became trapped in a fan belt. “It’s life-changing but it’s not life-ending,”he says.
After two surgeries and occupational therapy, Bertram decided to ask Eric Catalano, a tattoo artist, to create fingernail tattoos. The idea made everyone in the studio laugh—until they saw the final result. “The mood changed,” Catalano recalls from his Eternal Ink Tattoo Studio in Hecker, Illinois. “Everything turned from funny to wow.”
Catalano posted a photo of the tattoos, and it eventually was viewed by millions of people around the world. The viral photo pushed Catalano, 40, further into the world of paramedical tattooing. Now people who want to cover their life-altering scars come from as far away as Ireland to visit his shop.
Leslie Pollan, a dog breeder, was bitten on the face by a puppy. She underwent countless surgeries but those gave her no hope. She ultimately traveled six hours for a session with Catalano. HecamouflagedPollan’s lip scar, giving her back confidence.
Though he is now known for his talent with intricate fingernail, Catalano uses the techniques he picked up years ago while helping breast cancer survivors. Those tattoos are among the most common paramedical requests. His grandmother had breast cancer, and her battle with the disease is one reason Catalano is so dedicated to helping those with the diagnosis.
Catalano performs up to eight reconstructive tattoos each “Wellness Wednesday”. While he charges $100 per regular tattoo, he doesn’t charge for paramedical tattoos: A GoFundMe page established last year brought in more than $16,000, allowing Catalano to donate his work.
“Financially, it doesn’t make sense,” Catalano says. “But every time I see emotions from my customers, I am 100 percent sure this is something that I can’t stop doing.”
4. How did people in the studio react to Bertram’s idea at first?
A. They took it lightly.
B. They found it creative.
C. They were confused.
D. They were impressed.
5. What does the underlined word “camouflaged” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Exposed.
B. Hid.
C. Ignored.
D. Removed.
6. What does Catalano say about his work with paramedical tattoos?
A. It is flexible.
B. It is demanding.
C. It is profitable.
D. It is rewarding.
7. Which of the following can best describe Catalano?
A. Humorous and experienced.
B. Devoted and generous.
C. Cooperative and grateful.
D. Professional and tolerant.

Contrary to the long-held belief that plants in the natural world are always in competition, new research has found that in severe environments adult plants help smaller ones and grow well as a result.
The research, led by Dr Rocio, studied adult and seedling (幼苗)plants in the ecological desert in the south-east of Spain. Dr Rocio said, “If you're a seedling in a poor land — the top of a mountain or a sand hill, for example-and you’re lucky enough to end up underneath a big plant, your chances of survival are certainly better than if you landed somewhere on your own. What we have found, which was surprising, is an established large plant, called a ‘nurse’, protects a seedling; it also produces more flowers than the same plants of similar large size growing on their own.”
Other benefits of nurse-seedling partnerships include that more variety of plants growing together can have a positive effect on the environment. For example, vegetation areas with nurse plants with more flowers might be able to attract higher numbers of pollinators(传粉者)in an area, in turn supporting insect and soil life and even provide a greater range of different fruit types for birds and other animals.
“The biggest winner for this system of nursing a plant is biodiversity(生物多样性),” Dr Rocio said. “The more biodiversean area, the greater number of species of plants, insect life, mammals and birds, and the better the chances of long-term healthy functioning of the environment and ecosystems. ” This system is win-win for adult and seedling plants in unfavorable environments.
The research is of value to those who manage and protect plants in tough environments. Most home gardeners and farmers plan to ensure their soil and conditions are the best they can be for plant growth, but the findings might be of value to those who garden in bare places.
8. What is a common understanding of plants?
A. They can help each other.
B. They can survive ill conditions.
C. They compete with each other.
D. They grow well on their own.
9. What will happen to seedling plants if they grow under adult plants?
A. They will produce more flowers.
B. They will die owing to competition.
C. They will make adult plants larger.
D. They will get support from adult plants.
10. What is the effect of the nurse-seedling partnership?
A. It leads to unfavorable environments.
B. It produces long-term healthy chances.
C. It attracts higher and larger pollinators.
D It provides a more variety of plant types.
11. Who will benefit from the new research?
A. People studying organic farming.
B. People protecting plants on sand hills.
C. People wanting to change biodiversity.
D. People keeping more animals on the farm.
D
If there is no difference in general intelligence between boys and girls, what can explain girls’ poor performance in science and math?
It hasbeen suggested that girls do not take math courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons. Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine (女性的) and attractive (有魅力的).
However, there are still more high-achieving boys than girls when taking math exams. This difference appears to be worldwide. Biological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations too.
Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergarten, boys are encouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks. Facts show that outstanding mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who gave answers.
Besides, there can be little doubt that teachers of math and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. They spend more time with the boy students, giving them more time to answer questions and working harder to
get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call on boys for answers and to allow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. All of this seems to encourage boys to work harder in science and math and to give them confidence that they are able to succeed.
Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many math and science courses, nor is it likely to support girls who do. When it comes to these subjects it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls.
12. Why does the author raise a question in paragraph 1?
A. To find differences between boys and girls.
B. To explain the poor performance of girls.
C. To ask readers a question.
D. To introduce the topic.
13. The text mainly discusses ________ reasons for the difference between boys and girls in scientific achievements.
A. biological
B. personal
C. social
D. historical
14. What does the text say about great mathematicians?
A. Their teachers did not offer answers to them.
B. They started learning math at an earlier age.
C. They showed mathematical abilities in their teenage years.
D. Their success resulted from their strong interest in math.
15. The author would probably agree that ________.
A. boys and girls learn in the same way
B. boys and girls are equal in general intelligence
C. girls are more confident in themselves than before
D. girls should take fewer science courses than boys

Dear Peter,
How is it going? Learning from your last E-mail what you are doing research into Chinese students doing housework, so I’m writing to tell you something about myself.
Busy as I am with my schoolwork as a senior three student, I still try to do as many housework as I can. During workday, I keep my room tidy and clean, make it comfortable to live in. I also take out the rubbish every morning when I leave school. On weekends, I wash my clothes and cook food.
In my opinion, it is high necessary for senior three students to do housework. After all, it was our responsibility to share housework as a family member. Besides, doing housework provide a chance to relieve us from the pressure of study.
I hope it can be helpful to my research.
Sincerely,
Lihua.第二节书面表达(满分25分)
