A
Dr. Hausman is a hair detective. Once a mountain lion killed a thirteen - year- old boy. The town offered a reward of thousand dollars for anyone who would kill the lion.
One day an excited hunter came to the town to say that he had killed the mountain lion. As proof that he had killed the right animal, he showed a ball of human hair. He said he had taken the hair from the stomach of the mountain lion.
However, another hunter soon showed up to claim (索要) the reward. He too had a ball of human hair that he said he had taken from the dead lion' s stomach. The town did not know which man to pay. Maybe neither one had killed the right mountain lion. To settle the argument, they decided to turn the whole thing over to Dr. Hausman.
Dr. Hausman studied the hair and reported that the second hunter should be paid. The hair in the stomach of the mountain lion he had killed matched the hair of the boy. The whole town was relieved to know for sure
that the killer had been found.
There are other kinds of detectives who do not wear a uniform, like Hausman, solve endless mysteries every year. There is, for example, the dust detective. The dust detective often helps catch a criminal by proving that he has been on the scene of the crime (罪案) .
Then there is the wood detective. By studying a piece of wood he can tell what kind of tree the piece of wood came from. He can tell where it was grown, and how old it is. Business activities are becoming increasingly worldwide as many firms spread their operations into markets abroad. Many U.S. firms, for example,
are trying to enlarge markets by doing business in China, India, Latin America, and Russia and other Eastern European countries. Multinational Corporations (MNCs), which operate in more than one country, at once, especially move operations to wherever they can find the least expensive employees who are able to do the work well. Production jobs requiring only basic or repetitive skills ——such as sewing computer pieces ——are usually the first to be moved abroad. MNCs can pay these workers a small part of what they would have to pay in their own countries, and often work them longer and harder. Most U.S. multinational businesses keep the majority of their upper–level management, marketing and finance within the United States. They employ some lower–level managers and a large number of their production workers in offices, factories, and buildings in developing countries. MNCs based in the United States have moved many of their production operations to Central and Latin America, China, India, and Southeast Asia.
Merger is also becoming more common than in the past. In the United States, for example, tobacco product and food producer R.J. Reynolds Industries bought food giant Nabisco Brands to form RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp. in 1985, and in 1995 the industrial power generator, electronics, and machine producer Westinghouse Electric Corporation bought media production company CBS Inc.
63.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.Business Abroad B.Modern Business Development C.Spread of MNCs D.Business in the Developing Countries 64.Why do many U.S. firms move their factories to Central and Latin America, China, India, and Southeast Asia?
A.To help those countries to develop industries.
B.To get rid of the gap between the poor and the rich.
C.To produce more production.
D.To gain more value from the cheap employees.
65.The word “merger” in the first sentence of the last paragraph refers to .
A.joining B.bargaining C.separating D.competing
66.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Worldwide business will be popular.
B.Employees will be inexpensive.
C.People should not work for foreign firms.
D.Small companies should keep on preventing being bought.

One would have to be a fool to overlook the importance of using positive thinking for you rather than allowing negative thinking to work against you. In recent years, research in psychopharmacology(精神药理学)has proven what many people have known over the centuries: a positive attitude is good for you, good for your health, good for your wealth, good for everything. Researchers found that a positive attitude produces a specific chemical reaction which makes people feel better, while negative thinking results in a decline of hormone(荷尔蒙)and shuts down the immune(免疫的)system. This leads to illness and depression. Positive thoughts will make you feel better. Even if you must begin by literally forcing yourself to be positive (faking it, so to speak ), it will become contagious (会传播的)and the positive thoughts will generate nice little chemicals and good feelings which will reinforce the positive thoughts.
For example, if you force yourself to smile or laugh, even when you don’t feel like smiling or laughing, if you keep at it for a few minutes, you will soon feel like it. Feelings can generate thoughts, but thoughts can also generate feelings. Control your thoughts and you can control your feelings. Positive thinking is important in all aspects of our lives. There is probably no single factor more important in determining your success in achieving your career objectives than your own attitude.
I t’s often been said that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And in the office of militant(好战)negativism , the positive workers shine like gold . You cannot control external events, but you can learn to control your reaction to those events and thereby have a positive attitude and be happy. This vital key to success is totally within your control. Use it.
67.If you are not a fool, you should .
A.overlook the importance of using the positive thinking.
B.attach()importance to positive thinking
C.allow the use of negative thinking
D.have positive thinking as well as negative thinking
68.We can infer from the passage that .
A.positive thinking can cure you of your diseases
B.positive thinking can easily be generated by anyone
C.a decline of hormone may cause you to be depressed
D.a specific chemical reaction is the cause of negative thinking 69.According to the passage, which of the following is true? A.Feelings and thoughts can generate each other.
B.It’s easier to control thoughts than to control feelings. C.Your success depends wholly on your attitude.
D.Keeping smiling will surely make you successful.
70.Just like a one-eyed man in the land of the blind, you should .
A.take positive attitude in the office of militant negativism B.be king in your office
C.pay no attention to what is going on around you
D.control your feeling to what is happening to you
71.The best title to the passage is .
A.Thinking Benefits People B.Why Should People Think
C.Positive Thinking and Negative Thinking D.Thinking: The Vital Way

In the 18th century New York was smaller than Philadelphia and Boston. Today it is the largest city in America. How can the change in its size and importance be explained?
To answer this question we must consider certain facts about geography, history and economies. Together these three will explain the huge growth of America’s most famous city.
The map of the Northeast shows that four of the most heavily populated areas in this region are around seaports. At these points materials from across the sea enter the United States, and the products of the land are sent there for export across the sea.
Economists know that places where transportation lines meet are good places for making raw material into finished goods. That is why seaports often have cities nearby. But cities like New York needed more than their geographical location in order to become great industrial centers. Their development did not happen simply by chance.
About 1815, when many Americans from the east coast had already moved toward the west, trade routes from the ports to the central regions of the country began to be a serious problem. The slow wagon of that time , drawn by horses or oxen, were too expensive for moving heavy freight(货运) very far. Americans had admitted Europe’s canals. In New York State a canal seemed the best solution to the transportation problem. From the
eastern end of Lake Erie all the way across the state to the Hudson River there is a long trip of low land. Here the Erie Canal was constructed. After several years of work it was completed in 1825.
The canal produced an immediate effect. Freight costs were cut to about one –tenth of what they had been .New York City, which had been smaller than Philadelphia and Boston, quickly became the leading city of the coast .In the years that followed, transportation routes on the Great Lakes were joined to routes on the Mississippi River. Then New York City became the end point of a great inland shipping system that extended from the Atlantic Ocean far up the western branches of the Mississippi.
72. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A . The Development of Transportation in New York.
B . Export and Imports of New York .
C . How New York became America’s Largest City .
D . How New York Exchanged with Europe.
73. All of the following respects except ______ help New York became the most famous city.
A . culture
B . history
C . economies D. geographical location
74. According to the passage , which of the following statements is true?
A. The Erie Canal connected Lake Erie with the Hudson River .
B. Economists are of the opinion that place where farming is done are
good for making raw materials into finished goods.
C. Wagons drawn by horses and oxen soon proved to be better and cheaper
than canal transportation.
D. The seaports usually have less population but more business.
75. Freight costs were reduced to 10% of what they have been because of______.
A. cheap and fast wagons.
B. the new sea routes.
C. the construction of the Erie Canal.

书面表达范文
The way you make friends
Everyone needs friends, so how to make true friends is very important to anybody.
To make friends, you must be friendly to others. A smile is like a magnet that draws people. Smile at others and you are always sure to get a smile in return. You should do your best to make a stranger feel happy at home, no matter where he happens to be. Think as you are in his position and make him feel welcome. And don’t judge a stranger only by his appearance. Besides, try to remember others’ names, which will make them feel that they have made an impression on you. And if you don’t agree with others on a certain matter, don’t argue but discuss with them. You should think more of others than of yourself. But most of all, don’t believe those who leave their friends when they are in trouble because "A friend in need is a friend indeed."。
