Miss Martha, aged 40, kept a little bakery on the corner.
Two or three times a week a customer came in in whom she began to take an interest. He spoke English with a strong German accent. His clothes were worn and darned in places, and wrinkled and baggy in others. But he looked neat, and had very good manners.
① He always bought two loaves of stale bread. Fresh bread was five cents
a loaf. Stale ones were two for five.
Once Miss Martha saw a red and brown stain on his fingers. She was sure then that he was an artist and very poor. No doubt he lived in an attic painting pictures and ate stale bread.
Often when Miss Martha sat down to her chops and light rolls and jam she would sigh, and wish that the gentle-mannered artist might share her tasty meal instead of eating his dry bread.
In order to test her theory as to his occupation, she brought a painting that she had bought in a sale, and set it behind the bread counter.
Two days afterward the customer came in.
"Two loaves of stale bread, please."
"A fine picture, madam," he said while she was wrapping up the bread.
"Yes?" says Miss Martha, "I do admire art. You think it is a good picture?
"Der balance," said the customer, "is not in good drawing." Then he took his bread, and hurried out.
How kindly his eyes shone behind his spectacles! To be able to judge perspective at a glance-and to live on stale bread! But genius often has to struggle before it is recognized. She thought he began to look thinner.
②Her heart ached to add something good to eat to his meagre purchase, but her courage failed in the act. She did not dare affront him. She knew the pride of artists.
Miss Martha took to wearing her blue-dotted silk waist behind the counter. In the back room she cooked a mysterious compound of quince seeds and borax.
One day the customer came in as usual, and called for his stale loaves.
③While Miss Martha was reaching for them, a fire-engine came lumbering past. He hurried to the door to look, as anyone will. Suddenly inspired, Miss Martha seized the opportunity. With a bread knife Miss Martha made a deep slash in each of the stale loaves, inserted a generous quantity of butter, and pressed the loaves tight again.
When the customer turned once more she was tying the paper around them.
When he had gone, after an unusually pleasant little chat, Miss Martha smiled to herself. For a long time that day her mind dwelt on the subject. She imagined the scene when he should discover her little deception.
He would prepare for his luncheon of dry bread and water. He would slice into a loaf—ah! Miss Martha blushed. Would he think of the hand that placed
it there as he ate? Would he...The front doorbell jangled viciously. Somebody was coming in, making a great deal of noise.
Martha hurried to the front. Two men were there. One was a young man smoking a pipe—a man she had never seen before. ④The other was her artist.
His face was very red; his hat was on the back of his head; his hair was wildly rumpled. He clenched his two fists and shook them ferociously at Miss Martha.
"Dummkopf!" he shouted with extreme loudness; and then "Tausendonfer!" or something like it in German.
Miss Martha leaned weakly against the shelves and laid one hand on her blue-dotted silk waist. The young man took the other by the collar.
"Come on," he said, "you've said enough." He dragged the angry one out at the door to the sidewalk, and then came back.
"Guess you ought to be told, ma'am," he said. "That's Blumberger. He's an architectural draftsman. I work in the same office with him."
"He's been working hard for three months drawing a plan for a new city hall. It was a prize competition. He finished inking the lines yesterday. You know, a draftsman always makes his drawing in pencil first. When it's done he rubs out the pencil lines with handfuls of stale bread crumbs. That's better than India rubber."
"Blumberger's been buying the bread here. Well, today, well, you know, ma'am,that butter isn't, well, Blumberger's plan isn't good for anything now except to cut up into railroad sandwiches."
Miss Martha went into the back room. She took off the blue-dotted silk waist and put on the old brown serge she used to wear. Then she poured the quince seed and borax mixture out of the window into the ash can.

When it's done he rubs out the pencil lines with handfuls of stale bread crumbs. That's better than India rubber.
While Miss Martha was reaching for them, a fire-engine came lumbering past. He hurried to the door to look, as anyone will. Suddenly inspired, Miss Martha seized the opportunity.
Don't measure other people's corn by your own bushel.
Astronauts traveling in space meet forms of radiation
(射线)that are uncommon on Earth. Some of this radiation has been shown
to be harmful to human health. Yet a new American study suggests the radiation does not shorten astronauts' lives.
Researchers studied nearly 60 years of health records of male astronauts from the United States. Astronauts are usually well-educated, make more money and are in better physical condition than other Americans. Researchers then compared these records to information about a group of men who are in good health, richer than most Americans and receive good healthcare: professional athletes. Both the players and astronauts had a lower risk of dying young than the general population, the study found.
In the study, the researchers compared the death rate for male U. S. astronauts to active or former players from Major League Baseball
(MLB)and the National Basketball Association
(NBA). Both groups generally live longer than other Americans. And there was no difference between the death rates of NBA and MLB players. Astronauts had a lower rate of death from heart disease than the NBA and MLB players, and had cancer death rates similar to those of the athletes. Astronauts were more likely to die of accidents, and less likely to die from heart disease, the study also found.
Astronauts usually never smoked, leading to a lower risk of heart disease than the general population, researcher Francis Cucinotta said. "Radiation exposure
(暴露)might not lead to an early death for astronauts because of heart problems or cancers," he added. Diet and physical exercise also tell astronauts and professional athletes from the rest of the population, said Michael Delp, a researcher with Florida State University in Tallahassee. Even for other people, Delp said, "remaining or becoming physically active and keeping a well-balanced diet greatly improves overall health and happiness, and can improve successful aging."
However, much of the former research on death rates in astronauts has not yet studied the mental and physical demands
(要求)of this job. And the new study was not designed to prove whether or
how space travel may directly affect human health. It did not examine death rates among female astronauts or athletes, either.
(1)What do astronauts and professional athletes have in common?
A: They are usually well-educated.
B: They both like performing physical exercises.
C: They are in poor health because of long-term training.
D: Neither of them has higher risks of dying at a young age.
(2)According to Francis Cucinotta, compared with common people, ________. A: exposure to radiation protects astronauts from usual disease
B: astronauts usually keep a healthy diet and physically active
C: astronauts improve their overall health by doing regular exercises
D: astronauts have a lower risk of heart problems because they are non-smokers
(3)What can we lean from the last paragraph?
A: The new research still needs further studies.
B: The new study is against the former research.
C: The new findings are suitable for female astronauts.
D: Space travel may affect astronauts' health more or less.
(4)What can be a suitable title for the text?
A: Why do astronauts usually die at a younger age?
B: Radiation helps protect astronauts from heart disease
C: Work in space does not seem to shorten astronaut lives
D: Whether astronauts and athletes are in high-risk jobs or not?
Both the players and astronauts had a lower risk of dying young than the general population, the study found.
Astronauts usually never smoked, leading to a lower risk of heart disease than the general population, researcher Francis Cucinotta said.
Yet a new American study suggests the radiation does not shorten astronauts' lives.
