Now some women are spending a weekend at Mother's Camp(营地). There, husbands and children are not allowed. Why would a woman want to take a vacation without her family? Some women say they need time to be alone.
At Mother's Camp a woman has room for herself. She can sleep, read or watch TV, and no one will bother her. No children will ask, “Mom, what's for dinner?” No husband will say, “Oh, dear, I can't find any clean socks.” In fact al most 50% of women in the United States work outside the home. Many of them work full-time and then come home for a second job—taking care of their homes and families. These working women say one of their biggest problems is housework.
In the United States, working wives do about 75% of the housework. Many of their husbands say they want to help. But then they burn the rice or they can't find the pans. They ask so many questions that their wives decide it is easier to do the job themselves.
Some women go to Mother's Camp just to get a break from housework. For two days they don't cook, they don't clean and they don't look after their children and husbands. What do they do?They enjoy warm, sunny weather, walking, swimming or boating in a clear blue lake and sing songs around the campfire. They relax away from home. You excitedly write down all the changes you are going to make, but by the end of January those ideas get lost in your busy life.
Here's a suggestion: Forget the too big, hard to achieve goals and just think about the small ones. “We often think that we have to do everything in big steps, even though it's so hard for us to reach it, said Robert Maurer, who recently wrote the book One Small Step Can Change Your Life. “Wh at we try to do is to begin with such a small step that we can't find any excuse not to do it.”
“Kaizen”, a Japanese word, is used to mean to change behavior and attitudes. During World WarⅡ, American factory managers were able to increase productivity by trying small, continuous improvements instead of sudden changes. After the war, the idea was brought to a rebuilding Japan. It made Japan develop fast. The Japanese called it “Kaizen”, which means “improvement”. “Dad, stop it. Why do you always…?” He cut me off, “I'd not get stuck at the light without this
fellow!” The old man got to the light just as it was changing. “You're free! Drive away quickly,” I thought. I looked over my dad. “Can you believe that, Steph? I get stuck at every light. There are so many stupid drivers out there, he said angrily.
Who gives him the right to shout at someone? Anger built inside me. “What if I shouted at my frie nds when they asked me for help?” I said. I looked out of the window, trying to catch my breath.

Mark, a young person, tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter(打字机)."You've got to want to write,"I say to them," not want to be a writer."
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded(报答). When I left a 20-year job in the US Coast Guard to become a writer, I had no hopes at all.
What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn't got a break and began to doubt (MWE ) myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn't going to be one of those people who die wonder in " what if".
I would keep putting my dream to the test-even though it meant living with uncertainty(不确定) and fear of failure. This is the shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.
(1)According to the author's idea, writing is .
A. enjoyable
B. interesting
C. lonely
D. boring
(2)When the author left his 20-year job, he .
A. felt sad
B. lost his heart
C. felt unforgettable
D. found himself
(3)When the author went to the New York apartment building, .
A. there was almost nothing there
B. there was everything there
C. the author was pleased with it
D. the author was so happy
(4)What does the underlined word " shadowland " probably mean in Chinese?
A. 点点希望
B. 夺目强光
C. 人生低谷
D. 虚幻境界(5)What's the main idea of the passage?
A. Tell us to study hard.
B. Let us dream of succeeding.
C. Let us do something that we can't accept.
D. Hold on to your dream even if you meet difficulties.
【答案】(1)C
(2)B

句意:我会把梦想投入到这个检验上——即使意味着带着不确定和失败的恐惧生活。
这是希望的……,任何有梦想的人必须要学会在那儿生活。

My teacher said to a student: "Give me your phone."
We all looked in surprise. Kyle, a student who I never saw text in class, gave the teacher his
phone.
When the teacher left, two students who I often saw text in class started boasting about how they sent text messages and never got caught.
"Kyle, you stupid! I put my phone under my desk so it looks like I'm looking at my textbooks," one of them said.
"Isn't it funny that we always text and never get caught?" the other one laughed.
They must have thought they were smart, because they never got caught and Kyle did. But which situation is worse: getting caught, or getting away with it? Rules are there for a reason.
These two students might not get caught, but neither of them had good grades. They didn't pay any attention to the class, and I think they will keep doing this.
People don't just break big rules and get thrown into jail(监狱) overnight. They take it one step at a time. Kyle might have gotten caught, but at least he learned a good lesson. He will not break the rules in the future, so he will learn more in class and stay out of trouble. It's smarter not to break small rules.
(1)Why did the teacher ask Kyle to give up his phone?
A. Because she wanted to find out what Kyle just texted.
B. Because Kyle was playing with his phone in class.

根据 Kyle might have gotten caught, but at least he learned a good lesson. He will not break the rules in the future 凯尔可能被抓了,但至少他有了教训。
他将来不会违反规则,可知那两个没被抓到的学生以后会继续在课上玩手机,故选B。
(5)推理题。
根据 so he will learn more in class and stay out of trouble. It's smarter not to break small rules 所以他会在课堂上学到更多,远离麻烦。

Not long ago, my daughter's shoes were scratched(划损)by someone's knife. I took the shoes to the shoemaker to get them repaired. He looked at them and said to me, "If you trust me, I will add more scratches on both of the shoes."
I was surprised and asked why. He explained," As if the openings were made on purpose for a special style". I didn't fully understand him, but I decided to leave the shoes there.
Two days later I dropped by from work to fetch the shoes. At the first sight I found there were indeed five or six more scratches on each shoe, but all the openings were patched(打补丁)by red soft leather(皮革). They looked special. I couldn't help making compliments(赞扬) on the shoemaker's skills.
Another time, there was a large opening on the back of my wife's sister's white coat. My wife took it over, checked carefully, and then said," Let me take it home and mend it."
Three days later, seeing the coat again, I was shocked: the big opening was taken place by a beautiful flower and it took on a wonderful look. I gave my praise," It's just as beautiful as a piece of art!"
Perfection is impossible to achieve in everything, and so is human's life, which will appear in the form of injury, disability or disease. Since you can't change a wound(伤口), you should not expect people's pity by exposingthe wound, which shows nothing meaningful. All you can do and have to do is to make up the wound by patches and try your best to grow the most beautiful flower on the wound, and that is the meaning of life.

10.阅读理解
There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved(感动的).
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not enjoy the long train journey and had brought along many magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sat down and started to read magazines. It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just a city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond(超过) the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive, I decided to wave back. From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. When my uncle arrived, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug. I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.
