Meet Incredible Conservation Heroes
Saving Wildlife from Extinction
Anne Savage
Dr. Savage founded a conservation program to protect cottontop tamarins (棉顶狨猴) . She pioneered in the development of new technologies to study the animal in the Colombian forest. She also helped conduct a study that found only 7,500 individuals remained. As a result, the International Union for Conservation of Nature changed the classification of cottontop tamarins from Endangered to Critically Endangered, which brought the species to more people's notice.
Elena Bykova
Having majored in biology, Bykova has a good knowledge of the saiga antelope (赛加羚羊). As Executive Secretary of the Saiga Conservation Alliance, an international organization, Bykova works to save the antelope. Illegal shooting is the single biggest threat, and Bykova concentrates on raising public awareness of the danger, finding alternative livelihood opportunities for local communities, and protecting saiga habitats.
Jeanne Tarrant
Frogs are astonishingly diverse and beautiful for Dr. Tarrant. Over the years, she has helped put the spotlight on many highly threatened species of frogs that face extinction due to habitat loss, climate change, and hunts by their animal enemies. No wonder she is called the “Frog Lady” of South Africa!
Marilyn Connell
Living only in the Mary River of Queensland, the Mary River turtle (龟) takes

[2023·唐山市模拟]Every Saturday morning, Jenna Fournel pulls a table into her yard and piles it with produce free for anyone to grab. There might be greens, miniwatermelons, beans... Oftentimes, there're also homemade bread and flowers.
Fournel started the farm stand in 2020. The produce comes from a garden she tends with her 14yearold son, Leal, and h er husband. Her youngest son, Oli, used to help out too. It was 2018 when the boys could do their own things in the garden and they planted a lot of flowers. That summer, Oli had the idea of using their flowers to raise money for animals in a shelter. The boys cut flowers and put them on the sidewalk, starting their business. It made a healthy profit, which was beyond their dreams, and they took the surprising gain to the shelter.
Yet, in the fall of 2019, 9yearold Oli died of cancer. While grieving (悲痛), the family realized they needed something to keep their hands and minds busy. It was around this time that Fournel remembered Oli's school assignment that was returned after he died, which asked Oli to write about what he would do if he got $100. “He ta lked about how he'd use that to buy food for those in need,” Fournel says. “And we thought, ‘how could we continue this love and kindheartedness?’” The question led to their expanding the garden and sharing its produce.
“It's also a way to show our indebtedness. What enabled, I think, us to survive those hard days was our community,” she says. “People checked in all the time. I was so struck by what the community had done to cheer us up. We want to repay that.”
The stand was slow at first. But gradually, people made it a habit to visit. “They come by, getting something they enjoy.” Some neighbors met for the first time there. “This space offers us the opportunity to know each other and begin our own new stories, which we really need. In fact, I think everybody does,” Fournel says.

[2023·烟台市诊断性测试]I love learning foreign languages so much that I learn a new language every two years. When people find I'm a polyglot (通晓多种语言的人), they always ask me, “How do you do that?” Honestly, my answer will be, “I don't know. I simply love learning languages.” __1__ They want to know why they spend years learning even one language, never achieving fluency, and what's the secret of being polyglots.
__2__ And what do we have in common? I decided to find that out. I went to several events where language lovers gather to practice their languages, asked dozens of polyglots about methods they use, and heard dozens of approaches. __3__ One time as I was listening to an Irish polyglot, it suddenly dawned on me: the thing they have in common is that they found ways to turn language learning from a boring subject into a pleasant daily activity. All these polyglots talked about language learning as if it was great fun. You should have seen their faces when they were showing me their colorful grammar charts and handmade flash cards. __4__ The methods are various, but they make sure it's something enjoyable.
I realized it's actually how I learn. __5__ Then interesting programs became my choice. So all is clear. If you don't like writing words down on paper, type them in an app. If you're a shy person, apply selftalk at home. This is how polyglots learn languages, and the best news is that it's available to anyone willing to take the learning into their own hands.
A.But people are never happy with the reply.
B.There's no shortcut to learning languages for anyone.
C.One of them even made recipes in a foreign language.
D.That made me wonder, too, how polyglots actually do it.
E.When learning Spanish last year, I was bored with textbooks.
F.What is it that enables polyglots to learn languages faster than others?
G.Everybody seems to have a unique way to speak several languages fluently.
