INVESTIGATION STATUS : At ambient temperature the valve P/N 1158000-21 functioned normally. Refuel valve failure has been confirmed during cold testing. At -6 Deg Celsius, the valve open but fuel flow reduced and at -12 Deg Celsius, only a couple of liters a minute has been observed.

CONSEQUENCE : Several operators experienced low refuelling rate in cold condition which lead to flight delays.

MITIGATION / INTERIM PLAN : Investigation with Eaton are still runing and currently some areas of improvement have already been identified. As a first corrective action, the surface finish and machining concentricity of the control housing spindle housing bore have been introduced at supplier facilities and tested. This eases movement of the piston assembly. This results in valves with tightened tolerances. These valves are currently under evaluation in order to confirm improvement in operations. However in parralel acomplete design review of the refuel valve has been launched by Airbus and Eaton. MAINTENANCE ADVICE : When a slow refuel occurs, Airbus recommend to perform the following T/S procedure: 1) If in AUTO mode then perform manual overriding of the refuel valve in accordance with AMM task 12-11-28-650-005 2) Check subject refuel valve supply: confirm power supply at connector is 28VDC and advise any findings to Airbus. 3) Confirm fault is with refuel valve. If 28VDC present & problem remain then exchange failed valve with wing refuel valve or center tank refuel valve. - If fault remains on initial position: it is indicative of an aircraft failure (wiring ...) - If fault follows valve: subject refuel/defuel valve is failed. REFUEL VALVE OPERATION FAILURE
DESCRIPTION : Refuel valves P/N 1158000-21 (7QU, 8QU and 10QU) failures have been reported. This failure lead to a low refuelling rate and transfer issues This refuel valve failure could occur either in MANUAL or in AUTO refuel mode. Most of the reported cases have been encountered in cold weather conditions.
