The Rise of Voice Technology
Voice technology has come a long way. Just a few years ago, it would have been unusable. But now, those who follow the technology know that it has got considerably better.
Writing with your voice raises several interesting questions. How difficult is it actually? Human speech involves a lot more starting and stopping with errors and the need for repairing broken sentences than you may think. Even gifted speakers make mistakes. To turn the spoken word into reasonable writing requires lots of planning. You’ll need some kinds of notes or other organisers to make it work.
Another question turning speech into writing raises is the style. How would writing make the change that people speak their writing rather than type? Chances are that it would come up with many more short sentences and more concrete language, which is good. It would probably also rely on prepared phrases a lot more often, which is not available when you are speaking quickly.
To confirm this, a column was not written, but dictated (听写). It was composed from brief notes written down for structure only, and it was edited for length, with all of the original errors kept in. Here were the results. The first was that the literal accuracy was extremely high. There weren’t many cases wherethe software had heard
one word incorrectly and written down another. But the other result was that the readability of this column was rather bad. Obviously, the blame is not with the technology at all, which turns out to be rather good. Speaking into writing relies on a better human brain than the one we currently possess. Writing is hard. There’s a reason it can’t be done at the speed of speech, in real time.
To clarify the matter, this time paragraph breaks were added after the whole writing. Punctuations (标点) had to be spoken aloud, and after a full stop, the first word in the new sentence was capitalized automatically. Some minor punctuation marks were added to make it clearer. To improve accuracy, people “trained” the software beforehand, reading a prewritten passage aloud. Actually it turns out to be more effective. All of these ensure the satisfactory completion of turning speech into writing.
Language is the most important tool for human interaction, and voice is one beautiful part of language. With the maturity of modern technology, it has given birth to a great change in the human-computer voice interaction.
4. According to the passage, which helps to turn speech into writing in terms of style?

A. human brains are responsible for poor dictated writing.
B. writing with voice promises to improve the quality of writing.
C. writing is an unnatural act that can hardly be learned and improved.

C. Where the human-computer voice interaction is at an advantage.
D. How voice technology enables the change from speech into writing.

Older adults with a better sense of smell may live longer than thosewho have a poor sense of smell, a new study suggests. The study was a project of researchers in theUnited Statesthat was ongoing for over 13 years. They asked nearly 2,300 men and women to identify 12 common smells. All the subjects were from 71 to 82 years of age. The researchers gave the adults scores, from 0 to as high as 12, based on how many smells they identified correctly.
During the years of follow-up investigation, over 1,200 of the subjects died. When the study was launched, none of the adults were weak. They could walk a little under half a kilometer, climb 10 steps and independently complete daily activities. In the latest findings, the researchers noted that those with a weak nose were 30 percent more likely to die than people with a good sense of smell. The findings were reported last month in the scientific publication Annals of Internal Medicine.
Honglei Chen, a doctor withMichiganStateUniversityinEast Lansing,Michigan, was the lead writer of a report on the study. He said the connection between a poor sense of smell and an increased risk of dying was limited to adults who first reported good-to-excellent health. This suggests that a poor sense of smell is an early and sensitive sign for worsening health before it is recognizable in medical tests. With a poor sense of smell, people are more likely to die of brain and heart diseases, but not of cancer or breathing disorders.
The results also suggest that a poor sense of smell may be an early warning for poor health in older age that goesbeyond dementia or other neurodegenerative(神经变性的) diseases. These often signal the beginning of a weakening of the mind or body.
8. What do you know about the study mentioned?
A. The study involved researchers from the world.
B. All the participants were of different ages.
C. The study began to be performed about 13 years ago.
D. 2 ,300 men and women were young and healthy.
9. What was the situation like at the beginning of the study?
A. More than 1,200 of the participants passed away.
B. Many of the subjects were found with health problems.
C. All the subjects were independent of others when walking.
D. One third of the participants had a poor smell sense.
10. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. People with a poor sense of smell have heart disease.
B. You should be careful with your health if you smell poorly.
C. People with a poor sense of smell won't suffer from cancer.
D. Most of the elder people may have the dementia disease.
11. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Strong Sense of Smell May Be Linked to Longer Life
B. Old People Tend to Have a Poor Sense of Smell
C. A Number of Factors Result in Longer Life
D. Being Ill Means Losing the Sense of Smell
D
Even plant can run a fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or disease. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away straight up.A decade ago, adopting the infrared (红外线)scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick wayto take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely(精确的)target pesticide(杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which always includes plants that don't have pest problems.
Evenbetter,Paley's Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye.Fixed on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night,an infrared scanner measured the heat sent out by crops. The data were transformed into a color﹣coded map showing where plants were running "fevers".Farmers could then spot﹣spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide that they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984,after only three years.Farmers resisted thenew technology and long﹣term supporters were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce and refinements(改进)in infrared scanning,Paley hopes to get back into operation.Agriculture experts have no doubt that the technology works."This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States," says George Oerther of Texas A& M,who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial support which he failed to obtain 10years ago.
12. Plants will give out an increased amount of heat when they are .
A. facing an infrared scanner
B. sprayed with pesticides
C. exposed to extreme sun rays
D. inpoor physical condition
13. In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely,we can use infrared scanning to .
A draw a color1﹣coded map
B evaluate the damage to the crops
C. locate the problem area
D. measure the size of the affected area
14. The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties of .
A. the lack of official support
B. its high cost
C. the lack of financial support
D. its failure to help increase production
15. Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of .
A. full support from agricultural experts
B. the forceful promotion by the Department of Agriculture
C. the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produce
D. growing concern about the over use of pesticides on crops

Old Jimwas without doubt the besthairstylist I’d ever known. He designed every haircut so artistically that it would be an understatement to say the magics created by him were “beautiful”. But there was one strange thing about his shop: there was nomirrorin it, so customers were kept in suspense until they reached home.
I entered Old Jim’s hairdresser’s, sad and disappointed, having just been rejected a role in the school play. I was ordinary-looking and boring, and that’s why they didn’t want me — I was convinced. “I want to bebeautiful,” I said to Old Jim, tears almost dropping. After having a haircut, I thanked him again andwalkedout through the door, his words remaining in my head: “There’smagicin your new hair. Now start your journey to beauty.”
Sunlight dropped down through the overlapping leaves above my head as I walked on the street. I shook my head but didn’t feel a difference. I could only slightly feel that something was different, like a little voice that had long been suppressed that desired to beheard.
Suddenly, I heard someone calling out to me. “Susan! Susan” I turned around. It was Jennifer, the most popular girl in the whole school. “It really is you, Susan. You look great today!” ‘Thanks.” Jennifer was everything I wanted to be. What a sweet victory to get such admiration from a girl like her! We had aconversationon school and parted at a crossing, where she turned left and I right.
As I walked, I could see aboywalking toward me. We went to the same school but hadn't talked to each other much. If it weren't for the new hair, I would have looked down and pretended not to see him. I had always beenshy.
Paragraph 1:
But at that point, I intended to test out Old Jim’s magic.
