For many workers trying to lose weight, the weekend is a chance to do some exercise and eat something healthier than a supermarket sandwich at their desk. But some slimmers take a slightly different approach — consuming more than half their weekly calorie intake from Friday night to Sunday.
Away from the daily routine at work that helps them keep control of what they eat, they are snacking and drinking their way to a shocking 10,000 calories, a survey has found. Almost three-quarters of people trying to lose weight admit to over-eating at the weekend. A meal with friends or family, complete with alcohol, as well as a late-night snack before bed, can lead to adults consuming up to 3,500 calories in one day, a survey found. Men typically need 2,500 calories a day and women 2,000 calories. Consuming this amount would see men and women get through half their weekly calorie intake over the course of a ‘bad’ weekend.
Women were found to eat less on a Sunday because of guilt over their consumption over the previous two days. Men had fewer doubts about a third day of excess.
The biggest weekend diet danger comes from snacking between meals, the survey found. Some say they will often spend Saturday night in front of the TV with their families — combining watching their favorite shows with crisps and biscuits. And seven in ten people admitted to having fattening takeaways at weekends, with pizza the most popular. Alcohol is another big factor in weekend bingeing.Around 70 percent still like to have a roast on a Sunday or a big meal with family or friends and a third of those will have second helpings.
A spokesman from Forza Supplements, the diet company that conducted the survey, said, “We all have bad weekends where we have a lot of fun, but dieting goes out of the window.”
The 5:2 diet is becoming increasingly popular — where we limit our calories for five days and allow ourselves a few treats on the other two days.
“For many people, the two days off are Saturday and Sunday but they go way too far”
21. Which kind of weekend diet does the greatest harm?
A. Having a big meal with family and friends.
B. Drinking a lot.
C. Having fattening takeaways.
D.
Snacking between the meals.
22. According to the passage, those who try to lose weight _______.
A. intake more calories on weekdays than on weekends
B. get their efforts to lose weight ruined by over-eating on weekends
C. always have bad weekends due to their intention to lose weight
D. keep wide aware of their desire to lose weight by keeping a strict diet
23. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Weekends are vital for diets.
B. What the 5:2 diet is.
C. The proper way to lose weight.
D. People’s weekly calorie intake is changing.

I do not know Sybrina Fulton. Nor can I claim to understand the depth of her pain. Yet, we share a deep connection. A common feature experienced by those women who face
the challenge of raising a Bla ck male child in a nation that far too often views Black male bodies through fear. You see, Ms. Fulton is living my nightmare (恶梦). A constant worry that has stayed in the back of my mind since the birth of my eldest son, some sixteen years ago.
Through the years, I have witnessed the world’s reaction to my son evolve as he has grown from a small boy to a young man. In his early years, his easy smile and lovable character were nothing less than magnetic (有磁性的). Complete strangers would approach him in the street, draw him into conversation, and find themselves easily struck by his lively spirit. Even at that time I worried, how would my son react when in the years to come some of those who found themselves so impressed by this cute, intelligent boy, might grasp their purse tighter as he walked by.
Over the years I have sought to protect his spirit from the hurt that comes from undeserved hatred. I have also sought to arm him with the knowledge that could one day save his life. He knows, for example, that if he is ever pulled over by the police, that he is to keep both hands on the wheel at all times and only reach for his license when the officer is specifically observing his actions. He knows, even in less threatening situations, that rough play and loud interactions with his buddies of any color will be viewed very differently when he does it, than when his white friends display the very same behavior. Still, the truth of the matter is, no amount of advice or voiceless behavior overcomes the physical, immovable fact of the color of his skin. His intelligence, easy smile, and lovable character won’t protect him from unfounded assumptions of criminality.
What makes the Trayvon Martin travesty (歪曲) of justice so painful to me, personally, is the knowledge that Trayvon’s mother loved her baby no less than I love mine. The various pictures of moments throughout a happy childhood that have now found a home on nationwide newscasts provides clear evidence of that. Yet no amount of love and care, and no words of advice could have saved her son from the cruel killing he faced at the hands of a self-appointed neighborhood watch-dog. And perhaps even worse, nothing could have prepared her for the inhuman way her son has been treated by officials even in death. To think for three long days, his parents searched for
him while officials failed to inform them of his fate and instead, performed drug and alcohol tests on his lifeless body, while failing to do the same for his attacker —the only one of the two who indeed had a criminal past is frankly, unforgivable. To know that the words of her son’s killer were given more weight
than eye-witnesses and taped evidence of her child’s screams and eventual death must be heartbreaking. But to also have to live with the fact that his attacker still breathes free while her son lays buried underground is certainly more than any sorrowful parent should have to endure (忍受).
It is this type of pain that is not unfamiliar to the Black experience in America, for this is the Black mothers’ burden. A burden we have endured for centuries. We know the pain of having our newborn babies grabbed from our loving arms to be sold into lifelong servitude (奴役) and to never again experience the warmth of a mother’s loving hug. Yet, there is still the rightful expectation, that in
modern-day America, the wheels of justice would not be stopped.
So today, it is my hope that Trayvon’s mother, father, family and friends can take some comfort in the fact that millions of Americans of every color stand with them in their fight for justice. This is a burden no family should have to endure alone.
We will not give up.
We will not forget.
We will continue the fight until justice is done.
28. What do you know about Sybrina Fulton?
A. She was anxious about her son.
B. She was painful to lose her son.
C. She had trouble in raising her son.
D. She had the same dream as the writer.
29. By “keep both hands on the wheel at all times”, the writer means her son should ______.
A. get ready to
resist B. remain where he is
C. show his
innocence D. pretend to be scared
30. From the story of Trayvon Martin, we can infer that ______.
A. he was killed simply because of his color of skin
B. he was accused of taking drug even after his death
C. he kept silent even when he was being attacked
D. the police failed to find strong evidence against the attacker
31. The article is mainly intended to ______.
A. draw attention to the facts about killings
B. give comfort to the victims’ families
C. appeal for the end to the terrible situation
D. display hatred for terrible phenomena
D
While most of us are happy to take the credit when things go well, few of us are willing to take the blame when things go wrong. Rather than trying to hide our shame or embarrassment, experts found that we are simply less aware when our actions result in a negative outcome.
The research may explain why we often feel it hard to take the blame for our actions. “Our result suggests that people may really experience less responsibility for negative than for positive outcomes,” said Patrick Haggard, leading researcher and professor of the institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London.
In a series of tests, participants were asked to press a key. A sound then followed, either disapproving, neutral or approving, and they were then asked to estimate the time between the action and when they had heard the sound.
Researchers found that individuals experienced different levels of responsibility depending on the outcomes. They also discovered they were significantly slower to recognize if their actions had resulted in a bad consequence, compared to when they had done well.
“Effectively, we have found that we experience a negative outcome differently, not just retell it diffe rently. We make a weaker connection when there is a bad result. And respond much more strongly when something good happens,” said Professor Haggard. When something goes right, everyone wants to take the credit, and when things go wrong, nobody is interested in putting their hands up.
The researchers said our brain is “very much concerned” with reward, as good results are key to survival. Although our own perception (认知) of whether we are guilty of something or not is changed by the outcomes, this does not provide a defense if we have done something wrong. “Our experience of our own responsibilities can be misleading and can be strongly colored by the outcomes of our actions,” said Professor Haggard. “We have to take responsibility for what we actually do, not just for how we experience things.”
32. People who don’t take the blame for their actions _______.
A. always try to hide their shame or embarrassment.
B. are only willing to take the credit when things go well
C. feel less responsible for negative than for positive outcomes
D. are less aware of what to do when a negative outcome happens
33. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Our level of responsibility can be strongly affected by the outcomes of our actions.
B. When something bad happens, nobody is interested in dealing with the problem.
C. People were quicker to recognize if their actions had resulted in a bad consequence.
D. Participants were asked to count the time between pressing a key and hearing the sound.
34. How is the passage developed?
A. By giving
examples. B. By quoting research findings.
C. By making comparison.
D. By providing data.
35. According to the passage, a person who is concerned with reward is _______.
A. awkward
B.
natural C. absurd D. stubborn

Gratitude keeps us centered and wards off jealousy(妒忌) and negativity. Here are four little things we can do each day to nourish our sense of gratitude.
1. Choose your friends wisely.
36 Help your friends develop more positive characteristics by living with those positive characteristics yourself. Know what kind of friends will help you nurture(培育) your soul and set out to find some.
2. Help your friends cultivate gratitude.
Before you say something about a friend’s situation, remember that everyone’s situation is unique. I’ve seen it happen to myself and to my friends. They’ll be perfectly happy until someone tells them they’re being mistreated. Suddenly, they’re upset. 37 Make an agreement with your friends to cut the complaints from your conversations.
3. Say “thank you”.
Who in your life do you appreciate? Let them know, whether it’s your mom, your kids, your friends, your husband, your child’s daycare provider or the helpful woman in the restaurant. 38 Make it a habit and your attention will suddenly turn to all the things people do for you. Also, write thank-you n otes regularly, and be mindful of all the ways you show your appreciation by the things you do in return.
4. 39
Today, try to be aware of all the aspects of your personal, professional and family life for which you are thankful. Take a few minutes today to appreciate
nature. 40 Whether you focus on the stars above, a distant mountain range or the cottonwood tree in your backyard, try to notice the details. Give thanks for the beauty that surrounds you.
Regardless of whether you write down these items, spend some time each day focusing on the little things in your life that make each day special.
A. Be mindful of the little things.
B. Let’s work on focusing on what we have.
C. A heartfelt thank-you often does the trick.
D. Day by day, make a goal to stop complaining about your life.
E. Go for a walk and only notice those things that are beautiful.
F. At the end of each day, you record at least five things you’re
grateful for.
G. If you try to be spiritually strong, supportive, intelligent,
energetic and positive, seek those characteristics in others.

范文
Dear teachers, my fellow friends,
It is a great honor for me to recommend Li Hua, monitor of our class, as the Touching Figure on Campus of 2014. With a loving character, Li Hua is such a kind and helpful person as we cannot praise too much. Whenever there is a trouble, his timely help always pushes us forward.
Yet what has impressed us most is his unconditional love for those unprivileged children. Knowing that some children had little access to reading materials, he started to donate books to them. Tow years ago, he volunteered to teach English in a small village during the summer vacation, which has inspired some other students to join in.
Proud enough, we strongly support Li Hua as the Touching Figure on Campus of 2014, for his selfless love and his action that suggest even the smallest efforts can make a big difference to those in need.
Thank you for listening.
