Everyone needs friends. As the old saying goes, “Friendship is one mind in two bodies.” But how can you find a real friendship and keep it? The Care and Keeping of Friends written by American author Nadine Bernard Westcott tells young students some smart ways to find friends.
First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not money or good looks.
A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should do his or her best to help you. To make friends, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.
But things cannot always be happy. Even best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, you can have an honest talk. If he or she doesn’t want to talk with you, you may write a letter. Nadine says there are three steps about being friends again: tell him or her how you are feeling, say what yo have done wrong, and explain why you did this or that.
The book also gives advice on some small but important things like celebrating your friend’s success. Even if you haven’t had a real friend before, you will start to think about having one if you read this book, because the book tells that friendship is the most important thing in your life.

You should go to the Regular Line because you have over ten items.”
Knowing he was right, I agreed and then pushed the basket to the next line. So I was waiting for my turn there and I was just taking my items out of the basket to pay for them when a young man came up behind me in the line with two items.
I just left the Express Line because I had too many and now I really wanted to get finished. Again, my son came up. “Mom, he has only two items and the Express Line is very long now. Won’t you just let him go first?” I agreed, and the young man smiled widely and thanked me several times.

Friendships light up our lives. Everyone needs friends. 61 I have them because I am funny, honest and kind to everyone.
At school, my classmates and I often chat with each other after class. I like telling jokes to my friends. They always laugh and feel very happy with me. I feel happy too. 62
A true friend should be honest with his or her friends. If you lie to your friends, they won’t trust you any more. 63 Sometimes I have to tell white lies (善意的谎言) because I don’t want to hurt my friends’ feelings.
64 For example, I might lend a pen to my desk mate, but he breaks it accidentally (意外地). I won’t regret (后悔) lending the pen to him, because our class is like a big family. We should help each other. I won’t get angry either. 65 A smile costs nothing but is worth a lot. Maybe that is why my friends often say that I have a “heart of gold”.
Being a good friend to others is just as important as having good friends yourself. I am not perfect, but I am funny, honest and kind. That is why I have so many friends.
A.Kindness is important too.
B.I have many friends myself.
C.I find it hard to make friends.

What do you do when you are under stress (压力)? Schools in Georgia, US have a new way to help kids manage stress.
Last month, many Georgia schools started teaching students breathing (呼吸) exercises. Students do four-minute breathing exercises four times each day. They will do this for the next 40 school days. The exercises use deep breathing to help students become quiet.
In the exercise “Breath of joy”, for example, students stand up with their arms up at shoulder height and take a deep breath. In the exercise “Washing machine”, they twist (扭动) from side to side. “Wake up mountain” gets students up on their feet and reaching high. In the “Lotus breath”, they place their hands in front of their heart. Their hands should look like a lotus flower.
Fifth-grader Nahile Guzman said she enjoyed the exercises. She has even taught her family how to do them. “They help people feel more peaceful (平静的),”she said.
