I had an unusual dream where,as an adult woman, I was trying to ride a child-sized tricycle (三轮车). I was in a race of some kind, and was trying to balance the awkward little tricycle down a narrow street.
People were hanging out of their apartment windows screaming down at me,“Just give up,you fool! You’ll never make it with that little bike.” I k ept telling them repeatedly,“All I have is this three-wheeled tricycle.” I kept tipping (倾斜) to the side, but I kept my balance and ignored the people who were making fun of me.
Then at one point a man left his home and ran out into the middle of the str eet. “This bike will take forever at the speed you’re going!” He continued screaming words of discouragement right in my face. I replied,“I must push forward;I must get to the finish line! ”
I held on as tightly as possible and rode straight ahead with great determination. I had unshakable faith that I would make it! I also knew it did not matter how long it would take, because I knew it was worth it. At that point, the dream came to an abrupt end.
I got up and remembered the dream very clearly. I also remembered that the night before I was feeling discouraged — but now I felt happy and peaceful, and my spirit felt alive with hope.
I think we’ve all been given small tricycles as adults, and we struggle to balance our lives down the dark, narrow streets of mortality (有限的生命). By conviction(信念)she was a sensualist, but by nature she was a moralist, and in the works she published in the 1970s and 1980s , it was the latter side of her that came forward. In Illness as Metaphor—published in 1978, after she suffered cancer—she argued against the idea that cancer was somehow a special problem of repressed personalities, a concept that effectively blamed the victim for the disease. In fact, re-examining old positions was her lifelong habit.
In America, her story of a 19th century Polish actress who set up a perfect society in California, won the National Book Award in 2000. But it was as a all-purpose cultural view that she made her lasting fame. “Sometimes,” she once said, “I feel that, in the end, all I am really defending …is the idea of seriousness, of true seriousness.” And in the end, she made us take it seriously too.

We all know what it is like to be unable to turn your head because of a cold in the muscles of your neck, or because an unexpected twist has made your neck ache. The slightest move makes you jump with pain. Nothing could be worse than a pain in the neck.
That is why we use the phrase to describe some people who give you the same feeling. We have all met such people.
One is the man who always seems to be clapping his hands—often at the wrong time—during a performance in the theater. He keeps you from hearing the actors.
Even worse are those who can never arrive before the curtain goes up and the play begins. They come hurrying down to your row of seats. You are comfortably settled down, with your hat and heavy coat in your lap. You must stand up to let them pass. You are proud of yourself-control after they have settled into their seats…Well, what now…God, one of them is up again. He forgot to go to the men’s room, and once more you have to stand up, hanging on to your hat and coat to let him pass. Now, that is “a pain in the neck”.
Another, well—known to us all, is the person sitting behind you in the movies. His mouth is full of popcorn ; he is chewing loudly, or talking between bites to friends next to him. None of them remain still. Up and down, back and forth, they go—for another bag of popcorn, or something to drink.
Then, there is the man sitting next to you at lunch, smoking. He wants you to enjoy it too, and blows smoke across your food into your mouth.
We must not forget the man who comes into a bus or subway and sits down next to you, just as close as you will let him. You are reading the newspaper and he gets closer so that he can read the paper with you. He may even turn the paper to the next page before you are ready for it.
We also call such a person a “rubber neck”, always getting close to where it does not belong, like neighbors who watch all your visitors. They enjoy learning about your personal business. People have a strong dislike for “rubber necks”. They hate b eing watched secretly.
66.Where can you find this passage?
A. In a medicine dictionary.
B. in a kids’ story book.
C. In a social science book.
D. In a science textbook.
67.According to the passage, how do you feel when late comers walk back and forth in front of you in a cinema?
A. disturbed.
B. bored.
C. ignored.
D. relaxed.
68.A “rubber neck” often __________________ .
A. says bad words behind people.
B. quarrels face to face with neighbors.
C. bargains with salespeople over the price
D. asks about other people’s business
69.Which of the following persons CANNOT be described as a “pain in the neck”?
A. Someone who often claps at the wrong time during a performance.
B. Someone who feels ache in his neck due to a cold in the muscles.
C. Someone who sits next to you smoking, which you never enjoy.
D. Someone who keeps eating or talking all through the movies.
70.What is the main purpose of the author?

Nowadays more and more people are trapped in too busy work to relax themselves. We have no time to tell a bed-time story to our children, or enjoy a nice dinner with our family, or take a break to
think about how we live the precious life, or even meet friends. All we notice is that the distinctions that used to guide and steady us ------ between Sunday and Monday, public and private, here and there ------ are gone. We have more ways to communicate, but less and less to say. Partly because we’re so busy communicating.
Maybe that’s why more and more people I know, even if they have no religious commitment, seem to be turning to yoga, or meditation, or tai chi. Some friends of mine try to go on long walks every Sunday, or to “forget” their cellphones at home. A series of tests in recent years has shown that after spending ti me in quiet rural settings, subjects “exhibit greater attentiveness, stronger memory and generally improved cognition. Their brains become both calmer and sharper.” More than that, empathy, as well as deep thought, depends on neural processes that are “inh erently slow. ” The very ones our high-speed lives have little time for.
In my own case, I turn to eccentric and often extreme measures to try to keep my sanity and ensure that I have time to do nothing at all. I’ve not yet used a cellphone and I’ve neve r Tweeted or entered Facebook. I try not to go online till my day’s writing is finished, and I moved from Manhattan to rural Japan.
None of this is a matter of principle or asceticism (苦行主义): it’s just pure selfishness. Nothing makes me feel better-----calmer, clearer and happier----than being in one place, absorbed in a book, a conversation, a piece of music. It’s actually something deeper than mere happiness: it’s joy, which the monk David Steindl-Rast describes as “that kind of happiness that doesn’t depend on what happens.” That is the highest of the highest we have been longing for----The Joy of Quiet.
71. The writer sometimes doesn’t do anything because ________.
A.he is out of work .

A. Somebody really forgets his cellphone at home.
B.Somebody thinks cellphone is not a suitable means of communication.
C.Somebody hates modern techniques such as the cellphone.
D.Somebody leaves his cellphone at home on purpose.
73.Which of the following is right?
A.It is better to go back to the ancient times since we are so busy now.
B. The writer is unwilling to help others since he is selfish.
C. Slowing down to find time and space to think and enjoy oneself is urgent.
D. We have more to say because we have more ways to communicate.
74. What does the underlined word mean?
A. difference
B. sameness
C. simplicity
D. complication
75. What is the main idea of the article?
A. The importance of spending time in quiet.
B. We can do some sports such as yoga to relax.
C. Principle or asceticism is important in one’s life.
D. The more we communicate, the more we will be closer.

第四部份:写作(共两节,总分值35分)
第一节阅读表达(共5个小题;每题2分,共10分)
阅读所给短文,并依照文章后的题目要求进行简答。

The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place
[1] Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet… We are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and lis ten. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential
of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically(躯体上).
[2] Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale(秤)instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels.
[3] On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that_____________. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.
[4] The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成份). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.
[5] Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.

Look John, I know you love the city but, well, we don’t often go ou t and use it, do we? So I
was thinking perhaps if we moved to the country, I mean we’d get more for our money out there. Think of the children. They could actually walk to school, hmm? Not take that horrible underground. I do hate them using the undergrou nd. It’d be cheaper, wouldn’t it? And well, the air is much cleaner and therefore much more relaxing. They could play. We wouldn’t have to drive to work. You could get the train and do some work on the train so therefore you can play with the children in the evening. Oh, think about it, please?。
