took place towards the end of the Han dynasty and the ensuing Three Kingdoms period. With acast of hundreds of characters, the novel is a rich tapestry that brings ancient China vividly to life. While there are many inspiring and memorable figures, my personal favorite is the warrior-general Guan Yu.
Guan Yu cuts an impressive figure both physically and in terms of his moral character. Described as having a fierce visage with a crimson face and eyes like a phoenix, he is an imposing presence on the battlefield. More importantly, Guan Yu personifies the ideals of righteousness, loyalty and honor that were so highly prized in ancient Chinese culture.
From humble beginnings as a merchant's son, Guan Yu's path first crossed with the novel's lead figure, the legendary Liu Bei, when he came to Liu's aid and fought off a gang of pugilists harassing him. Despite their differing social statuses, the two men became sworn brothers and their friendship was cemented through an iconic oath-taking ceremony in a peach garden. Their fraternal bond was one of utmost loyalty that transcended family ties.
