I live in a big Scandinavian city that unluckily has a lot of homeless people. But there are many ways of helping them even though you may not have a lot of money. One way is to buy their monthly magazines. By doing this one day, I got to know a young homeless man who was often standing at the train station, selling the magazine.
He was from another country and I can only imagine what kind of psychological scars (心灵创伤) he must have had from living in a war-torn (饱受战争摧残的) country. After a while, I found that his birthday was close to mine which meant that we were born under the same sign of the Zodiac (星座). I met him last year shortly after his birthday, and without thinking, after congratulating him, I asked if he had had a good day. He said he hadn't really celebrated. I just couldn't bear the thought of this nice, young man being alone on his 25th birthday with no presents, no cakes and no songs!
So I went home and looked in my yarn(毛线) basket and as luck would have it, I had two yarn cores of pure wool left. I set to work and knitted a scarf for the young man.
I ran into him on my own birthday the next year as I was going shopping. I had hoped to meet him so I had carried the scarf around with me and a piece of my own birthday cake. He was very happy with these gifts and so was I. The light in his eyes and the heartfelt hug (拥抱) he gave me was the best present he could have given me!

Quick and Quack were two brave little ducks who lived with their mother. Both were really fast and were always competing against each other.
One day, after visiting their uncle Ducklass, Quack shouted, "Last one home is a goose!" and both ducks swam quickly down the river. They both knew the way well, but Quack had been preparing a trick for some time. He had realized that the current (水流) in the middle of the river was stronger, and would help him. So, even though Mother Duck had told them never to swim in the middle of the river, Quack paddled (涉水) over to it. "I'm old enough now to swim here," he thought to himself.
It wasn't long before he realized his mother had been right. He was going much faster than Quick, and was developing a big lead. Quick was not amused. He never disobeyed his mother, and now he was going to lose the race! As they went on, the current got stronger.
Quack proudly crossed the finishing line, without realizing he headed straight for a big whirlpool (漩涡) in the middle of the river. Before he could react, he was turning around in it, unable to escape.
No duck was strong enough to swim in those waters, and poor Quack kept swallowing water. The fact that he was struggling hard didn't help matters much either.
Fortunately, a cow from a nearby farm came by, and seeing Quack, he jumped in and rescued him. When he was on dry ground, he remained uncomfortable for quite some time. That provided quite a laugh for different animals that had been watching.

Humor is very important in any relationship. It is truly a unique gift when someone has the ability to make another laugh. Humor allows a person to forget his troubles and focus on positive aspects of his life. Personally speaking, making another laugh, whether it is a family member, a close friend, or even a stranger, has always given me a good feeling!
Humor plays an important role in our family lives. The interaction (相互影响), between husband and wife and between a parent and a child, is very important, just thinking how much better our relationships would be if we would take the time to laugh.
Humor and laughter are especially important during difficult times. No matter how bad a person may feel, a family member or a friend can make him feel good by laughing with him. I once had a co-worker, for whom there was no humor in her daily life. She seldom smiled and seemed to focus on only the negative or the dark side. One day I was told she was very unhappy, had few friends, and had poor relations with family members. Later, I learnt that she couldn't remember laughing or enjoying life. In order to enjoy her life, she was advised to have humor and laughter each day of her life. In the end, it seemed to make a huge difference.
We do live in a difficult world. "Stress" seems to be a major factor contributing to health problems of our society. So, in order to live easily, we should put humor into our daily lives. I have a plaque (匾) hanging on the wall, which reads "Live, Love and Laugh"!

A. the personality development

A. She lived in a happy family though she seldom smiled.

C. There was something wrong with the woman's mind.
D. She performed very poorly in her work1 for lack of humor.
66. The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 probably refers to "______".
A. a face-to-face talk with the author
B. learning to enjoy anything in life
C. filling life with humor and laughter
D. focusing on the dark side of her life
67. The passage mainly talks about______.
A. some problems in society
B. humor and relationships

Each year, bad food sickens about one in six Americans. Proposed new rules aim to improve food safety. Officials say the changes could prevent more than one million cases of food-related illnesses each year.
The new rules were proposed this month, exactly two years after President Obama signed the Food Safety Modernization Act. The rules are the first step in putting the law into effect, making the biggest changes in food safety since the 1930s.
The law makes the Food and Drug Administration responsible for preventing food-related illnesses. Experts say this is a change from the role that the FDA has played in the past in reacting to disease outbreaks (突然发生).
Congress passed the law after a series of outbreaks linked to bagged spinach, peanut butter and other foods. Margaret Hamburg is commissioner of the FDA.
"They occurred because of problems that would have been solved by these kinds of approaches. So I think, you know»we're very optimistic that we will begin to see the real change. "
The agency is proposing to require food manufacturers to show that they have identified (鉴定) where contamination (污染) is most likely to happen. Manufacturers would also have to show that they have taken steps to prevent it. The proposed rules also deal with safety in growing and harvesting fruits and vegetables.
Caroline Smith DeWaal is director for food safety at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. She says the rules should have been released a year ago. And she notes, "The bigger question is, where are the rules on imports (进口商品) that haven't been released yet?"
The FDA says about 15 percent of food eaten by Americans is imported, and that share is growing. Rules have not been released yet to require imported foods to meet the same standards as food produced in the United States.
68. The new rules require the Food and Drug Administration to______.
A. be responsible for Americans' safety
B. take stricter measures
C. improve its work efficiency
D. change its role
69. Caroline thinks the new rules are ______.
A. far from satisfaction
B. coming soon
C. made perfect
D. a little late
70. What more measures will probably be taken about food' safety?
A. To stop importing food from abroad.
B. To increase the share of the imported food.
C. To make rules to ensure the safety of imported food.
D. To make a close inspection of imported food.
71. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The Food Safety Modernization Act has made a great difference.
B. Food manufacturers will have to assume more responsibilities.
C. No change has been made to improve, food safety since the 1930s.
D. More than one million people die of food-related illnesses each year.

Crane was traveling from the United States to Cuba as a newspaper reporter. One night, his ship hit a rock. It sank m the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Florida. Most of the people on board got into lifeboats. Crane was among the last to leave. There were three others with him: the ship's captain, the cook, and a sailor.
These four men climbed into the only remaining lifeboat. The boat was so small that no one believed it could stay afloat for very long. None of the four men thought he would ever reach the shore. But the men fought the seas bravely, with all their strength. For two days, the four men had been struggling to reach land, but there was no land to be seen. All the men saw were violent waves which rose and came fiercely down on them. Hours passed. Then, as the boat was carried to the top of a great wave, the captain looked across the water. He said that he saw the lighthouse at Mosquito Inlet. The cook also said he saw it.
The lighthouse had been slowly growing larger. At last, from the top of each wave the men in the boat could see the land. Slowly, the land seemed to rise from the sea. Soon, the men could see two lines, one black and one white. They knew that the black line was formed by trees, and the white line was the sand. At last, the captain saw a house on the shore. And the lighthouse became even larger. Slowly and beautifully, the land rose from the sea. The wind came again. Finally, the men heard a new sound — the sound of waves breaking and crashing on the shore. The men watched the shore grow larger. They became hopeful. In an hour, perhaps, they would be on land. The men struggled to keep the boat from turning over. They were used to balancing in the boat.
The reporter thought he was now wet to the skin. But he felt in the top pocket of his coat and found eight cigars. Four were wet, but four were still dry. One of the men found some dry matches. Each man lit a cigar. The four men sailed in their boat with the belief of a rescue shining in their eyes.
72. What did the men think of their fate after climbing into the lifeboat"?
