IKEA Taste Affordable and Simple
ANCHOR
This bookshelf fits into a box which can be brought onto a bus and takes say, 20 minutes to put together. Its maker, IKEA, revolutionized the look of young people's interiors with inexpensive furniture like this. But success is followed by imitation and competition. This is how IKEA plans to fight back, using design as its weapon of choice. Trolleys rallying down aisles, interminable checkout queues, and flat-topped boxes crammed to the ceiling, this is IKEA. The Swedish do-it-yourself chain is basically a furniture supermarket. Instead of shopping for tuna in a tin, think bookshelf in a box. It's all part of the company's utilitarian philosophy, bring design to the masses.

LARS ENGMAN, DESIGN DIRECTOR IKEA
We are talking about democratic design, and that means form and function at an affordable price. That's the general philosophy of IKEA.

ANCHOR
Affordable and simple. IKEA hands the screwdriver over to the customer. Founded in 1943 by Ingrod Humfrod, the company rapidly became the preferred interior outfitter for students, ingles and young families. Annual sales now exceed six billion dollars. But after three years of 20% growth, these annual increases are diminishing. In 2(s) 002, the company is expected to expand by only 5%.

RITA CLIFTON
All the sort of classic department stores are desperate to break into that area, and are doing it in a much much more imaginative way.

LARS
The company started to work together with designers in the beginning of the 50s, and they had talked so much about it, like we're doing today.

ANCHOR
IKEA's new PS range, taking the furniture supermarket, up-market.

MARIA VINKA, DESIGNER, IKEA
The PS range is a range that's supposed to be a little more edgy, a little bit more designer focused. And as IKEA wants to push more on the designers, this collection is quite important for them.

ANCHOR
And IKEA hopes the PS range will distinguish it from its competitors and imitators, both aesthetically and financially.

MONIKA MULDER, DESIGNER, IKEA
Customers have to pay sometimes 30% of the price on product transport. So I said to the product developer, if you have a water can you put it in your box, it takes a lot of space. So I said why don't we have a stackable water can, and she said you make one.

RITA
Their proposition clearly is simplicity and good value and very good design. Now, in order to enhance their design credentials all the time, it's quite important to keep on bringing new evidence of that. And clearly, you know, hero-izing their designers a bit will be no bad thing.

ANCHOR
But the PS line is not expected to reassemble the company's profitability as quickly
as one of its bookshelves. Many say IKEA's long-term success still depends on following its founding principles. Design married to function and affordability.

Enrique Iglesias Dream Comes True
GAIL O'NEILL, CNN CORRESPONDENT
Songs, sex appeal and steamy music videos --just part of the equation that makes this sizzling performer an international sensation all over. He's not only the biggest selling Spanish language recording artist in the world, he's also struck a chord with his two English language albums.

JOE LEVY, MUSIC EDITOR, "ROLLING STONE" MAGAZINE
He's someone who started on a traditional Spanish label in a more traditional Spanish idiom, and who really evolved into what is a broad-based international pop style.

O'NEILL
Enrique Inglesias. He may have a famous father, but this performer earned his own place on the charts.

ANGELO FIGUEROA, EDITOR, PEOPLE IN ESPANOL MAGAZINE
Enrique has never wanted anyone to believe that anything that he's done or any accomplishments or achievements that he's made has been because of his last name.

O'NEILL
The breaking balladeer was born on May 8, 1975 in Madrid, Spain. Enrique was one of three children of Julio Inglesias, the famous Spanish crooner, and Isabelle Creisler, a socialite and actress. When Enrique was just 3 years old, his parents divorced, and at the age of 8 he and his siblings moved to Miami to live with their father. He was a shy kid, quietly trying his hand at writing songs.

IGLESIAS
I just started to write songs when I was 13, 14. It was the only way I really knew how to express myself. You know, I was kind of a shy kid in many ways, and for me, music was like therapy. It helped me through my teenage years a lot.

O'NEILL
Enrique dreamed of becoming a singer, but he kept that yearning a secret, even from his parents.

IGLESIAS
I just respected him so much, I didn't want to hear a negative answer.

O'NEILL
He continued with his fairly normal life and attended the Uniity of Miami, majoring in business administration. And as he approached 19, Enrique left college and took a bold(r) step toward attaining his life long dream.

IGLESIAS
I just left. I left Miami. I left my home. I left to Toronto, Canada, and began to work there on my first album.

O'NEILL
Enrique shopped his first demo under the pseudonym Enrique Martinez. He wanted people to pay attention to his music, not his pedigree.

LEVY
You want to know that your accomplishments belong to you and not because you have the same name as a world famous international pop superstar frequently photographed in a tuxedo.

O'NEILL
Success came quickly. In 1995, the young Iglesias earned a three-record deal, and only then did he finally reveal his dream to his parents. They just couldn't believe they didn't know about it. It took a few months, maybe a few years, but they're cool about it. They looked around and said, you know, you were right, you know, you've done a great job.

O'NEILL
By the end of 1998, Enrique had sold more than 17 million Spanish language albums. The boy with the ardently independent nature earned Billboard, ASCAP, and World Music Awards, and the 1996 Grammy for best Latin performer. In 1999, Will Smith caught one of Enrique's shows in Los Angeles, and asked him to contribute a song to the "Wild, Wild West" soundtrack.

IGLESIAS
He said, I'd like you to be in the soundtrack for the "Wild, Wild West". And I had this song, so I sent him over the song and he fell in love with it.

O'NEILL
And so did the rest of the world.

O'NEILL
That summer, "Balamos" hit number one on the charts. With the release of his English language album, "Enrique," that November, he was becoming one of pop music's biggest stars. In November 2001, his fifth album, "Escape," was released. And Enrique continues to burn up the charts musically.

O'NEILL
What cannot be disputed is Enrique's talent as a songwriter. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Iglesias writes most of his songs.

LEVY
With him you get more of a sense of someone who's got something to say, who's crafting his own material. None of us can escape from his love. And we can't escape from his songs lately either.

FUGUEROA
I really believe that we've only seen just a small portion of what he's capable of, and I think he's going to continue to evolve musically.

IGLESIAS
I have so much ambition. And I have so much will and so much love for music, that I just want to keep on going and getting better and better and better, and writing more and more songs. I too feel like I have so much inside of me that I need to express.

Norah Jones Road on Modern Jazz
Sasha Rionda
Hi, I am Sasha Rionda. This week the Music Room gives Norah Jones first major television profile. She is being hailed as the savior of modern jazz. And reached the top twenty
on the Billboard' 200 album chart. Regarded by EMI as one of the highest profile artists, we present the 22-year-old New Yorker to you and her breakthrough segments. I guess now we can truly say she has broken through.

Song lyrics
I waited till I saw the sun. I don't know why I didn't come.

Norah Jones
I don't really have a good description for my music. I just, I think, I think it's really simple, and I think the songs, whether you like the songs or not, I like them, I think they're strong songs.

Song lyrics
Nightingale, sing us a song, of a love that once belonged.

Norah Jones
It's exciting for people to like the record, and talk about it. It's just kind of…, it puts a lot of pressure on, people saying, oh, you're great, you can be the next big thing. Well, hold on, you know, just let me do what I do. Don't put that kind of pressure on me, because I don't want it.

Song lyrics
Like a flower waiting to bloom.

Norah Jones
The pop world is cool. But I never really thought of myself as being a part of it, or wanted to be a big part of it. Coz I'm on a label that's not really like that. They're not trying to dress me up, they're not trying to do things like that. So sort
of separate, I feel sort of separate from it.

Song lyrics,
Come away with me in tonight...

Norah Jones
Songs are about what I want them to be about. For me it might mean something completely different than what it means to you. Myself, and the people I play with are all influenced by jazz. And we all love jazz, country ic, blues. We love a lot of different things. I think it shows in the music. Cold Cold Heart, a Hank Williams song, a great song, I've known it for a long time, as a Hank Williams song. And then I heard Diana Washington do it a few years ago. I thought it was really cool. I was, like wow, that was such a great song. It can be done in any way. And then when it came time to record songs for the record, we thought, well, let's just try it. I guess the advice I would have for someone who wants to be a musician, someone little, someone young, is to just go for it, just play music that you love and don't really listen to anybody else. What they think, just doesn't really matter.

Song lyrics
The heart is drenched in wine. But you'll be on my mind forever...

Norah Jones
I just want to play music. I don't want to be the next big anything. Just want to play for people, that's it.

Natalie Imbruglia Comes Back
Sasha Rionda
Welcome back! Aussie singer Natalie Imbruglia is enjoying a high profile at the moment as the face of a certain cosmetics commercial. She hopes to add to that exposure with the release this week of the single "Beauty on the Fire". It's the third cut from her album "White Lilies' Island". (. ) And comes four years after her global smash, "Torn".

Natalie Imbruglia
I've been in such a dark place for a lot of the writing of the album, you know, just with the pressure and everything. There was a turning point after, I think, I wrote "That Day" with Pat Leonard, where I let go of something and that's when I started to, to get really, really excited, and really happy, and wrote some of the best songs on the record -last. I can't really write unless it's from a true place, so I had to kind of get happy, to write songs, you know, the injection of happiness of sunlight made an impression on the album.

Natalie Imbruglia
The lesson that I've learnt from many songwriters out there, is, you know, you really should keep up your songwriting, you shouldn't take a year off, even if it's just a part of, even if just ... you're telling yourself it's just for fun, because it was really hard to get back. I really had to ask myself, what do I like, in uptempo pop-songs, coz every time I go to write a song like that, I cringe, like, I have this kind of, it's going too far, it's too cheesy, or happy, or it doesn't feel right. And I kept coming, coz I love melancholy, even in happy a song, you know.

Natalie Imbruglia
The fear was probably more than pleasing other people, was can I please myself? Can I write a follow-up about them that I view as a step-on or better than the first? You know, I had my own scaring from probably having a song that was successful that I didn't write. You know, so, there was a lot of things that I needed to prove to myself. It was hard to take everything in.

Natalie Imbruglia
I was following this song around the world, collecting all these awards, and just trying to feel worthy of all this attention. So it was the best time of my life. I mean, you couldn't ask for more to make this crossover into music and then, you know, best new artist, MTV award, and all these awards, two Brit Awards, and it was just, it was so much...

Hi, everyone! Once in a while, we come on tours to catch a star. A couple of weeks ago, I knocked at her room and headed to Charlotte, North Carolina, to meet with the woman recently named "the most powerful figure in show biz". Ladies and gentlemen, and audience, with Britney Spears.

BRITNEY
Ah, this is my third tour, I'm just like, I had a lot of involvement with this tour.
I got to, you know, choose the dancers, choose like everything. So I think it's a bigger deal for me coz it was like my baby, my projects.

ANCHOR
Now that you're no longer a teenager, are you looking for more adult audience for your music?

BRITNEY
You know, it's not something that you try to do, just, you know, I'm gonna try to sing to this person and to that person. I just, you know, sing what I'm feeling at the time, and hopefully, my fans will, you know, appreciate that and like that.

BRITNEY
You know what? Lately, I've been really interested in like, a lot of hip-hop music. I've been really influenced by that, you know, I think I incorporate a lot of that into my music lately. But, you know what, it changes every day, who knows? Six weeks from now, I'll probably sing rock music. You know, it's just whatever I'm feeling at the moment.

ANCHOR
Coz actually, your song, your new song, "Boys", has a little rap in it, right?
BRITNEY
I really love the version that we did on the album, But, before I did the video, I was like, I want to, you know. The Neptunes are amazing. And I knew they could come
in and do something really different with it, put a dance break in it, here or there. They did. They took the song, and they completely redid it, and it's very cool.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS, THE NEPTUNES
Originally it was called "Girls" -and there was a solo there for Michael Jackson, right? So I'm giving you some exclusive talk right now. But the song never made it to Michael, he never heard it. And so we changed the lyrics around, and then we offered it to Britney, and she liked it.

BRITNEY
Thankfully, they liked it so much, they were able to put it into the Austin Powers movie. So, I'm really excited with that, yeah.

ANCHOR
How was that shooting for the video with Mike Meyers?

It was very cool. I loved it. He is the sweetest guy. It was really hard for me, because the whole time I was trying to get into the character, and be really cool-------no -------it didn't work, you know. I was just like, OK, you know. The set was really refreshing, coz everyone was laughing and, he was very cool to work with.

ANCHOR
Which music video did you have most fun filming?

Out of all of my... probably my first one, "Hit Me Baby One More Time", because it
was my first video and the energy was, everyone was nervous the first time, you know, probably that one, yeah.

ANCHOR
Do you have a lot of impact in the making of your videos?

Yes, that's the funniest part about it, you know, doing the videos, you know. I want to do this, for example, the "Overprotected" video. That was all of my idea, my creations. It's really cool to watch back and, you know, yeah, you have to, siit's special.

ANCHOR
What did you do?
主播

BRITNEY
