Credit Cardrs
Persona] credit cards are becoming much in evidence in China. Known as "plastic money", credit cards have transformed the way people buy things. Consumers will be able to "buy now, pay later", and many regard this as an advantage.
But people need to be careful. There are dangers associated with credit cards. Some people find it very, easy to exceed their budget. They are tempted to purchase goods that they do not really need, and can run up a huge debt quickly. The credit cards often charge a high rate of interest, which aggravates the problems for these people.
However, credit cards, if used wisely, can improve the quality of people's lives. They can give people access to money to meet sudden unplanned expenses. Properly handled, they can let people control their expenditure and the monthly statements provide a record of where their money has gone.)

二、Part Ⅱ Reading Compr ehension (Skimming and Scanning)(总题数:1,分数:70.00)
Spiders
Spiders can be distinguished from other Arachnids because the prosoma (combined head and thorax)is only separated from the opisthosoma (abdomen)by a narrow waist; in other Arachnids the whole body appears to be much more of a single unit. All spiders produce silk, but only some construct webs to catch their food and to protect their eggs.
All spiders possess poison glands but very few of them are dangerous to humans. Of the 600 + species in Britain only 12 are strong enough to pierce the human skin, and apart from allergies, none are more dangerous than a common wasp. Most spiders have 8 eyes as well as 8 legs. There are 32000 known species of spiders in the world. No human being has ever been officially recorded as having died as the result of a "tarantula" bite.
All spiders are carnivores and feed only on liquids, i.e. their preys' natural juices and the break- down products of external digestion.
What's in a Name
The word "Arachnid" comes from the Greek word "Arachne" who was the daughter of Idmon of Colophon in Lydia, a dyer by trade. Arachne herself was a weaver, the best in the known world. However in a foolish moment she challenged Athene, the daughter of Zeus, to a weaving competition. Arachne wove so perfect a cloth that she tore it to shreds. Arachne became depressed alter this and in the end she hung herself. Athene was stirred to remorse at the knowledge that her anger turned the rope Arachne had used to hang herself into a web and Arachne herself into a spider so that the beauty of her spinning should not he lost to the world ever again.
The Great Household Spider Safari
There are just over" six hundred different sorts of spiders in the British Isles. But of these only a handful are commonly found in houses. At the front of the head are a pair of what appear to be small legs. These are called palps and are used to guide food to the spider's mouth. The front of the head also has a group of six or eight eyes. On the underside of the body at the rear, are four or six small conical bumps or cylinders. There are the spinnerets from which the spider produces the silk to make its webs.
Telling male and female spiders apart is easily done by looking at their palps. Males have swollen ends to their palps which make them look as if they are wearing boxing gloves. Females have normal-looking palps that are not swollen at the ends.
The largest spider is the Goliath spider, the female of which grows to reach a leg span of ten inches. The largest spider in Britain is the Cardinal spider which is a close cousin of Tim Tcgenaria. Females can achieve a leg span of four and a half inches. It is known as the Cardinal spider as it was common in Hampton Court when Cardinal Wolsey lived there. The sight of these long-legged spiders wandering around the palace at night used to frighten him. So far 32000 different kinds of spiders have been discovered from all over the world. Britain has 630 different kinds of spiders, and 250 kinds are tiny Money spiders, the smallest of which has a body less than one millimeter long.
(1).All spiders construct webs to catch their food.(分数:7.00)
填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:N)
All, construct webs
All spiders Produce silk, but only some constr uct webs to
catch their food and to protect their eggs.”
(2).Not all the poison glands possessed by spiders are dangerous to human beings.(分数:7.00)填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:Y)
Not all the poison glands, dangerous
All spiders possess poison glands but very few of them are dangerous to humans.”
(3).Spiders often kill humans in Britain when they pierce human skin.(分数:7.00)
填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:N)
解析:[关键信息] often kill humans, in Britain, pierce human skin
[相关信息] 文中第一部分第二段“Of the 600+species in Britain only 12 are strong enough to pierce the human skin, and apart from allergies, none are more dangerous than a common wasp.”和末句“No human being has ever been officially recorded as having died as the result of a ‘tarantula’ bite.”
(4).After seeing her enemy commits suicide, Arachne turned Athena into a spider.(分数:7.00)填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:N)
Arachne turned Athena into a spider
[相关信息] 文中第二部分“…turned…and Arachne herself into a spider.”

填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:NG)
Tim Tegenaria, found in Britain
[相关信息] 文中第三部分最后一段“...the Cardinal spider which is a close cousin of Tim Tegenaria.”
[信息分析与对比] 题目中的“are closely related to”与原文中的“is a close cousin of”意思相同。
(6).So far 32000 different kinds of spiders have been discovered from all over the world.(分数:7.00)
填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:Y)

填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:N)
Money spiders, smallest
250 kinds are tiny Money spiders, the smallest of which has a body less than one millimeter long.”
(8).The Cardinal spider is named after ______.(分数:7.00)
填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:Cardinal Wolsey)
Cardinal spider, named
It is known as the Cardinal spider as it was common in Hampton Court when Cardinal Wolsey lived there.”

Passage One
Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.(分数:21.00)
A.There were no planets without moons.
B.There was no air or water on Jupiter.
C.Life was possible in outer space. √
D.The mystery of life could not be resolved.
(26) Since early times, scientists have been fascinated with the idea of life existing somewhere else besides earth. Until recently, they believed that life on other planets was just a hopeful dream. But now they are beginning to locate places where life could form. In 1997, they saw evidence of planets near other stars like the sun. But scientists now think that life could be even nearer in our own solar system. One place scientists are studying very closely is Europa, a moon of Jupiter.
(27) Space probes have provided evidence that Europa has a large ocean under its surface. The probes have also made scientists think that under its surface Europa has a rocky core giving off volcanic heat. Water and heat from volcanic activity are two basic conditions needed for life to form. A third is certain basic chemicals such as carbon, oxygen and nitrogen. Scientists believe there might be such chemicals lying at the bottom of Europa's ocean. They may have already created life or may be about to. You may wonder if light is also needed for life to form. Until recently, scientists thought that light was essential. But now, places have been found on earth that are in total blackness such as caves several miles beneath the surface. And bacteria, primitive forms of life, have been seen there. (28)So the lack of light in Europa's sub-surface ocean doesn't automatically rule out life forming.
26. What did scientists once believe according to the passage?

B.She became a famous educator.
C.She became a public figure. √
D.She quit driving altogether.
(29) P. P never wanted to be a national public figure. All she wanted to be was a mother and
a homemaker. But her life was turned upside down when a motorist distracted by his cell phone, ran a stop sign and crashed into the side of her car. The impact killed her two-year-old daughter. Four months later, P. reluctantly but courageously decided to try to educate the public and to fight for laws to ban drivers from using cell phones while a ear is moving. She wanted to save other children from what happened to her daughter. (30) In her first speech, P. got off to a shaky start. She was visibly trembling and her voice was soft and uncertain. But as she got into her speech, a dramatic transformation took place. She stopped shaking and spoke with a strong voice. For the rest of her talk, she was a forceful and compelling speaker. She wanted everyone in the audience to know what she knew without having to learn it from a personal tragedy. Many in the audience were moved to tears, and to action. In subsequent presentations, P. gained reputation as a highly effective speaker. Her appearance on a talk show was broadcast three times transmitting her message to over 14,000,000 people. (31)Her campaign increased public awareness of the problem and prompted over 300 cities and several states to consider restrictions on cell phone use.

Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.(分数:28.00)
A.Job security.
B.Good labour relations.
C.Challenging work. √
D.Attractive wages and benefits.
It is logical to suppose that things like good labor relations, good working conditions, good wages and benefits, and job security motivate workers. But one expert, Frederick Herzberg argued that such conditions do not motivate workers, they are merely satisfiers. (32) Motivators, in contrast, include things such as having a challenging and interesting job, recognition and responsibility. (33) However, even with the development of computers and robotics, there are always plenty of boring, repetitive and mechanical jobs, and lots of unskilled people who have to do them. So how do managers motivate people in such jobs? (34) One solution is to give them some responsibilities, not as individuals, but as part of a team. For example, some supermarkets combine office staff, the people who fill the shelves, and the people who work at the checkout into a team. And let them decide what product lines to stock, how to display them, and so on. Many people now talk about the importance of a company shared values or culture, with which all the staff can identify. For example, being the best hotel chain, or making the best, the most user friendly, or the most reliable products in a particular field. (35)Such values are more likely to motivate workers than financial targets, which ultimately only concern a few people. Unfortunately, there is only a limited number of such goals to go around. And by definition, not all the competing companies in an industry can seriously play in to be the best.
32. What can actually motivate workers according to Frederick Herzberg?
