But researchers are warning that the blueish light their screens emit can stop users getting a good nights sleep. That is because this type of light mimics daylight, convincing the brain that it is still daytime. Blue light suppresses production of a brain chemical called melatonin, which helps us fall sleep. This is because our brains have evolved to be wakeful during daylight hours. By contrast, light which is more orange or red in tone does not reduce melatonin production, perhaps because our brains recognize it as a cue that the day is ending.Neurologists (神经病学家) have known for years that staring at screens late in the evening can disrupt sleep. Researchers at the Lighting Research Centre, at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, are warning that looking at tablet displays for more than two hours leads to a suppression of our natural melatonin levels as the devices emit optical radiation (光辐射) atshort wavelengths - in other words, they emit bluer light. They say: Although turning off devices at night is the ultimate solution, it is recommended that if these devices are used at night displays are dimmed as much as possible and that the time spent on them before bed should be limited. They drew their conclusions after measuring melatonin levels in 13 volunteers, after they had spent time viewing iPads at full brightness at a distance of 10 inches, for two hours. Melatonin levels were significantly lower after they had done this, than they were after the volunteers had viewed their iPads for the same time, but while wearing orange glass goggles, which cut out the blue light. They wrote in the journal Applied Ergonomics that tablet makers could tune the spectral power distribution of self-luminous devices (自发光设备的频谱功率分布) so that they disrupted the sleep patterns of users less.It is not just a good nights sleep that could be jeopardized (危害) by too much late night screen time. Researchers know that persistent disruption to sleep patterns can lead to an increased risk of obesity, and even breast cancer. However, these studies tend to be comparisons of those with chronic (慢性的) sleep disruption, such as long term shift workers, with those who have normal sleep patterns.高考英语阅读理解题目及答案12. What is it that stops users getting a good nights sleep?A. ScreensB. blueish lightC. MelatoninD. Orange or red light13. Based on their findings, researchers have made the following suggestions except that ________.A. Devices like iPads should be turned off at night.B. Tablet makers should make improvements in devices.C. Users should view iPads at full brightness instead of wearing orange glass goggles.D. The time spent on screen before bed should be controlled.14. We can infer from the passage that _________.A. Orange and red light does no good to a good nights sleep.B. Our brains recognize orange or red light in tone as a cue that the day is ending.C. The less melatonin our body produces, the easier we fall asleep.D. Too much late night screen time leads to more than sleep problem.15. The writers purpose for writing this article is to ________.A. inform readers of a recent research.B. complain about problems caused by using iPads before bed.C. offer some suggestions on late night screen viewing.D. advocate late night screen viewing.参考答案12-15 BCDA。

Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, tim e and effort be spent exploring and researching something wit h so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent o n space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? Thes e are questions that, understandably, are very often asked. Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup(基因构成) as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and en vironments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring spa ce is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible. Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its e ffects.Exploration also allows minerals and other potential(潜在的) resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate nee d of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or qu ality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spinoff s including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellite s for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Ev en nonstick pans and mirrored sunglasses are byproducts(副产品) of technological developments in the space industry! While many resources are spent on what seems a small retur n, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intellige nt members of our species to focus on what may serve to sav e us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human b eings to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other pla nets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human li fe and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in t he future.本文是一篇议论文,向我们阐述了人类进行太空探索的原因。

杭州外国语学校2013年高考英语集训阅读理解每日一练29倒数第五周星期四AAfter 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said, “I love you, but I know this other woman loves you too, and would love to spend some time with you.”The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER, who had been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.“what’s wrong, are you well?” she asked. The lsraelites, Egyptians, and other Middle Eastern cultures ate flatbreads cooked in mub ovens similar to today’s pita bread, and later the Romans and Greeks began topping this flatbread with olive oil and native spice s. Once the Italians accepted the use of cooking with tomatoes, they perfected the pizza, and it developed into what we call pizza today. It is said that the famous Margherita pizza from Nap les, considered the “true” pizza by many, came about when Queen Margherita, while traveling through Italy, fellin love with the flatbreads being sold to the poor. She ordered a baker named Raphelle to bake her a selection of pizzas to try. One type, consisting of tomatoes, mozzarella, became her favorite, and was named to honor her appreciation for pizza.Pizza Margherita is s till a favorite pizza choice in Ital today. What else is hiding in the world’s largest coral reef? Scientists recently dived into the water to find out. A team of scientists explored the reef, located along Australia’s northeastern coast. They also checked out Ningaloo Reef on the country’s western coast. The searches turned up hundreds of animal species, including some that may be new to science. Scientists spied worms shaped like trees, big – clawed shrimp and jellyfish.“It is awe – inspiring to know that so much of what we see has not yet beendescribed,” says Patricia Hendricks, who took part in the expedition. That is a trip with a specific goal. “The reef is truly a beautiful place with so many mysteries.”Scientists wanted to get a closer look at some of the underwater cities’ lesser –known residents –soft coral. Using netted bags and their hands, the scientists searched the reefs. They found about 130 types of soft coral that may be new species.A lot is known about hard coral, but soft coral is more of a mystery. The creatures are very diverse, or varied. Some are shaped like bushes or fans. Others are whips that twist with the currents. They grow in rainbow of colors. Despite the variety, some types of soft coral look very similar to one another,“This makes them a challenge to study, and so very little is known about them.” Hendricks told ER News. She a nd other researchers took samples of the soft coral. The scientists also zeroed in on what was living in and around the coral. They hope to identify the new species. The reef research isn’t done yet. The scientists plan to return to same three spots annually for the next six years. They left 36 plastic “houses” stuck to the ocean floor. The scientists hope some of the coral reefs’ residents will move into the houses over time. That will make it easier for scientists to study the creatures on future trips. The scientists’ findings could give humans a hand. Some marine life is used in medicine. Researchers can also study how the creatures deal with pollution and climate change. That might give scientists ideas on how people could better adapt or change. Knowing what creatures live in oceans is important, scientists say, because on –third of the world’s coral reefs are endangered. “If we don’t know what is present in the first place, how are we ever goin g to protect it properly?” asks Hendricks. “Learning about new species is an important step.”53.What’s the main idea of the passage?A.Scientists find surprises in the Great barrier Reef.B.Soft Coral no longer remains a mystery.C.Scientists left 36 plastic houses to the ocean floor.D.Scientists made explorations to deal with ocean pollution. 54.According to the passage, what makes the study of the soft coral a big challenge?A.The diversity of the soft coral. B.Many unknown species.C.The similar appearance. D.Various shapes and colors. 55.What does the writer mean by “That might give scient ists ideas on how people could better adapt, or change.” (Para.5)?A.Ocean species may be of great medical value in the future.B.A study of ocean creatures’ adaptation may assist scientists in their research.C.Research on ocean creatures will help solve the pollution problem.D.Studying new ocean species will help improve people’s living environment.56.It can be in ferred from the passage that .A.the scientists discovered many ocean species by accidentB.coral reefs in the world are endangered because of climate changeC.the Great Barrier Reef has been attracting more scientists’ attention D.the samples of the soft coral enables scientists to further explore the oceanEIt is, perhaps, no accident that many of the outstanding figures of the past were amazingly versatile men. Right up until very recent times, it was possible for an intelligent person to be familiar with almost every branch of knowledge. Thus, men of genius like Leonardo da Cinci or Sir Philip Sidney, engaged in many careers at once as a matter of course. Da Vinci was so busy with his numerous inventions, that he hardly found the time to complete his paintings; Sidney, who died in battle when he was only thirty –two years old, was not only a great soldier, but a brilliant scholar and poet as well. Both these men came very near to fulfilling the Renaissance (文艺复兴) ideal of the ‘universal man’, the man who was expert at everything.Today, we rarely, if ever, hear that a musician has just invented a new type of space rocket. Knowledge has become divided and subdivided into countless, narrowly –defined fields. The specialist is respected; the versatile person, far from being admired, is more often regarded with distrust. The modern world is a world of highly –skilled ‘experts’ who have had to devote the greater part of their lives to a very limited field of study in order to compete with their fellows. With this high degree of specialization, the frontiers of knowledge are steadily being pushed back more rapidly than ever before. But this has not been achieved without considerable cost. The scientist, who outside his own particular subject is little more than a fool, is a modern phenomenon; as is the man of letters who is hardly aware of the rapid progress that has been made in technology. Similarly, specialization has indirectly affected quite ordinary people in every walk of life. Many activities which were once pursued (追求) for their own sakes, are often given up in despair: they require techniques, the experts tell us, which take a lifetime to master. Why learn to play the piano, when you can listen to the world’s greatest pianists in your own drawing – room?Little by little, we are becoming more and more separate from each other. It is almost impossible to talk to your neighbor about his job, even if he is engaged in roughly the same work as you are. The Royal Society in Britain includes among its members only the most admirable scientists in the country. Yet it is highly confusing to find that even here, as one of its fellows put it, at an academic(学术的) lecture only 10% of the members can understand 50% of what is being said! 57.The underlined expression “versatile men” refers to .A.highly – skilled specialists B.brilliant scholarsC.talented peopl e D.admirable scientists 58.According to the passage, if da Vinci and Sydney lived in the modern world, .A.they would enjoy a better reputation B.people would look up to them in amazementC.they might have made greater achievements D.they might not be truly appreciated by people59.By q uoting “at lecture only 10% of the members can understand 50% of what isbeing said”, the writer wants to show that the high-degree specialization .A.has made scientists unwilling to share their achievementsB.has widened the academic gap between scientists in the same fieldC.has indirectly affected people in every walk of lifeD.has brought about a significant increase in interpersonal distance[60.The writer of the passage takes a attitude towards the high-degree specialization.A.pessimistic B.negative C.supportive D.friendly参考答案。

In the past, I struggled wit h this and I even thought it had to do with my DNA or something… But later I learned that once you know how to keep those words flowing, you can meet and talk to anyone you like, which helps create great possibilities for friendship, fun and shared activities that you would otherwise have missed out on.After studying this in depth, I had different opinions and found that one of these common behaviors is the habit of filtering (过滤)--holding back from saying something until you've "checked" to make sure that what you're about to say is cool, impressive and interesting. Another problem is not learning to get in the mood for conversation. If you don't know how to change from subjects, then it can take a lot of time to warm up.It is the reflex (习惯性思维) that allows you to say whatever goes on in your mind. It's fun to realize that you're allowed to say whatever is on your mind. As long as you don't say anything that could land you in jail (监狱).All of the "Oh! That's interesting…" "Hmm, I've never heard of that" "Hmm, cool!" expressions are reactionary (保守的) bits of conversation that prove to the other person that you're really listening. This works 99% of the time. So, if you show some interest, they'll hang around and want to talk to you even more.Everyone knows that stories juice-up conversations, but most people only talk about stories of their own lives. When someone mentions something related to any of them, just tell the story, even if it's not from your life. The more interesting, stranger or more frightening they are, the harder they are to forget.(1)If people can deal with the awkward silence, they can .A. train their working skillB. improve their life qualityC. enrich their social lifeD. establish their working relationship(2)When talking with others, we should .A. feel nervousB. think twiceC. be free to expressD. avoid breaking in (3)According to the passage, what do the speakers care much about?A. The attractive topics of conversation.B. The atmosphere of the conversation.C. The listener's experiences and tastes.D. The listener's curiosity and concern.(4)What does the underlined part "juice-up conversations" mean?A. making conversations more boringB. making conversations livelierC. making conversations smootherD. making conversations more relaxing【答案】(1)C(2)C(3)D(4)B【解析】【分析】本文本文是一篇议论文,我们谈话时最大的问题之一是尴尬的沉默。

阅读理解People who frequently eat fruit are more likely to report greater positive mental wellbeing and are less likely to report symptoms of depression than those who do not, according to new research from the College of Health and Life Sciences, Aston University. The team also found that people who eat savoury (咸味的) snacks such as crisps (薯片), which are low in nutrients, are more likely to report greater levels of anxiety.Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the study surveyed 428 adults from across the UK and looked at the relationship between their consumption of fruit, vegetables, sweet and savoury snacks, and their psychological health. The research found that both nutrient-rich fruit and nutrient-poor savoury snacks appeared to be linked to psychological health. They also found that there was no direct association between eating vegetables and psychological health. Based on the survey, the more often people ate fruit, the lower they scored for depression and the higher for mental wellbeing, independent of the overall quantity of fruit intake. By contrast, there was no link between these everyday memory lapses (差错) and fruit and vegetables intake or sweet snacks, suggesting a unique relationship between these nutrient-poor savoury snacks, everyday mental lapses, and psychological health.Lead author, PhD student Nicola-Jayne Tuck commented, “Very little is known about how diet may affect mental health and wellbeing, and while we did not directly examine causality here, our findings could suggest that frequently snacking on nutrient-poor savoury foods may increase everyday mental lapses, which in turn reduces psychological health.”“It is possible that changing what we snack on could be a really simple way to improve our mental wellbeing. Conversely, it is also possible that the forthcoming restriction of processed snacks at checkouts, due to come in this October, could not only improve the country’s physical health, but mental health too.”“Overall, it’s definitely worth trying to get into the habit of reaching for the fruit bowl.”1.Which may lead to greater level of anxiety?A.Savoury snacks.B.Fruit.C.Vegetables.D.Grain.2.What can we learn from paragraph 2?A.Rich fruit appears not to be linked to psychological health.B.The more fruit people eat, the lower they score for depression.C.There is a relation between the nutrient-poor snacks and mental health.D.There is a direct link between eating vegetables and psychological health.3.What does the underlined word “causality” in paragraph 3 refer to?A.The relation between fruit and vegetables.B.The relation between exercise and health.C.The relation between snacks and mental health.D.The relation between diet and mental health and wellbeing.4.Which is the most suitable title for the text?A.Eating habits can prevent diseaseB.Eating unhealthy snacks often is harmful to healthC.Eating vegetables often can improve mental healthD.Eating fruit often may contribute to mental healthIf you’re taking the train in Switzerland, your first stop should be the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) website. Observing a plant’s health via its glow can be a way to instantly measure its health, and the side-effect is anybody who wants a healthy glowing plant in their living room can have one.A study published on Monday in Nature Biotechnology shows that this goal is well on its way to being a reality. The study authors announce they’ve created a method that causes plants to glow much brighter, and for a longer period of time, than previous efforts. Plants adapted by this method should be available for purchase within a few years. The research was conducted through a teamwork between three scientific institutions and Planta, a biotech startup in Moscow. When this team examined a poisonous mushroom, they discovered that caffeic acid is responsible for its bioluminescence. In this new study, the team employed that information and inserted enzymes — which are specific to the mushroom — into the DNA of tobacco plants. In turn, the enzymes were able to interact with the caffeic acid in the tobacco plants, and cause them to glow both in the dark and in the daylight. This method, the scientists claimed, made the plants 10 times brighter than previous efforts and the continuous light production didn’t harm the health of the plants. Interestingly, the light decreased as the leaves aged — but it also increased when the leaves were damaged. In turn, the team suggested this method could also help other researchers monitor plant responses to various pressures and changes in the environment. If a plant is short of water or a hungry sheep is harming a plant, bioluminescence could warn of this damage before it’s too late.8.How can people quickly identify a decorative flower’s health condition?A.By making it greener.B.By monitoring its glow.C.By testing the chemicals in it.D.By putting it in the living room.9.What can we expect of the adapted glowing plants?A.They will appear on the market.B.They may take the place of lamps. C.They can light up a whole living room.D.They glow less bright than previous efforts. 10.What did the team do with the mushroom in the new study?A.They inserted caffeic acid into it.B.They made it give out brighter light.C.They grew it on the tobacco plant farm.D.They put its enzymes into the tobacco plants.11.What is the last paragraph mainly about?A.Warning of potential damage from glowing plants.B.Warning of the light production’s harm to plants.C.Effects of continuous light production on the glowing plants.D.Benefits of combining specific enzymes with caffeic acid in plants. After he received the China Youth May Fourth Medal, Yang Yongxiu felt a greater sense ofresponsibility.Born in a rural family in Shangqiu, Henan Province, the first vehicle he drove was a tractor(拖拉机).” When I was a child, my father drove me to the farm during farming season,“ he said. Yang dreamed of making cars when he grew up. “During primary school, I often went to see the buses on the road near my village,” he said.” They made a deep impression on me.”In 2007, he took gaokao, or China’s national college entrance examination, and scored more than he needed to get into an undergraduate program. To fulfill his dream, he chose to study numerical control technology at the Changchun Automobile Industry Institute, which has a long history of training workers for the automotive industry. After graduation, Yang joined the research and development department at FAW. The study shows that environment plays a key role in shaping people’s personalities. While genetics still forms the central part of the human psyche (心理), the research finds that personality traits (特征) are “contagious” (传染的) among children. “ Our finding flies in the face of common assumptions that personality can’t be changed,” said Dr. Jennifer Neal,co-author of the study. The researchers studied the personalities and social networks of two pre-school classes for a full school year. One of the classes was a set of three-year-olds, and the other a set offour-year-olds. Children whose friends were hard-working or outgoing gradually took on these personality traits over time. Psychology expert Dr. Emily Dublin said kids are having a far bigger effect on each other than people may realize. The new study is not the first to explore the contagious effects of personality traits. A 2015 psychology study found that rudeness at work can be contagious as it travels from person to person “like a disease”. The study found that seeing a boss being rude to an employee was enough to cause people to be rude to those around them. The researchers questioned 6,000 people on the social “climate” in their workplaces, which included offices, hotels and restaurants. They found 75 percent of those who took part said they had been treated rudely at least once in the past year. And the study also suggests that merely seeing other people being subjected to rudeness made it more likely that a person would treat their colleagues in the same way. Rudeness could include leaving someone off an invite to a company event, sending unkind emails, finding fault with others or failing to give praise.Dr.Torkelson believes companies need to be more aware of the harm that rudeness in the workplace can do as it can damage the working environment. She said better training could help to fight against the problem.16.According to Paragraph 2, who have the greatest impact on children’s personality?A.Their parents.B.Their friends.C.The researchers.D.The psychologists.17.Which of the following is considered rude at the workplace?A.Ignoring the faults of co-workers.B.Not sending emails to workmates.C.Seeking praise from colleagues and bosses.D.Not inviting a colleague to a company party.18.What is the passage mainly about?A.One’s personality is hard to change.B.One’s personality is shaped by genes.C.One’s personality traits can spread to others.D.One’s personality traits can change overnight.19.This passage is most probably taken from ________.A.a science report.B.a study guide.C.a school textbook.D.a technical journal.A friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: life isn’t fair. It’s a disappointment, but it’s absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t be.One of the nice things about surrendering (屈从) to the fact that life isn’t fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. We know it’s not “life’s job” to make everything perfect, it’s our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt differently; everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions, and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated. The fact that life isn’t fair doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything in our power to improveour own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we don’t recognize or admit that life isn’t fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a self-defeating emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn’t fair, however, we feel enthusiastic for others and for ourselves. And enthusiasm is a heartfelt emotion that conveys loving-kindness to everyone it touches. The next time you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can make you out of self-pity and into helpful action.20.The author thought of his friend’s question as a good one because ________.A.like his friend, he also thought life was unfair.B.he also wanted to know who held such an opinion.C.it made him recall something during his childhood.21.Surrendering to the fact that life isn’t fair will ________.A.make us feel sorry for unfair treatment.B.make us know it’s our duty to perfect things.C.keep us from making everything perfect.D.keep us from doing everything in our power.22.In the last paragraph, “this very basic fact”refers to the fact that ________.A.you should not pity for others.B.life isn’t and won’t be fair. C.compassion is heartfelt emotion.D.pity is a self-defeating emotion. 23.According to the author, when recognizing life injustice, you may ________.A.feel pity to other people.B.do nothing to improve our life. C.receive enthusiasm from others.D.take measures to solve life problem.Do you want a part-time job to earn some extra money? But each year, billions of pounds of perfectly good food go to waste. Meanwhile, 34 million face hunger in the United States. As the country’s largest food rescue organization, Feeding America partners with food manufacturers, grocery stores, restaurants, and farmers to rescue food and deliver it to food banks serving our neighbors. Each year, 108 billion pounds of food is wasted in the United States. That equates to 130 billion meals and more than $ 408 billion in food thrown away each year. Shockingly, nearly 40% of all food in America is wasted.Food goes to waste at every stage of food production and distribution from farmers to packers and shippers, from manufacturers to retailers to our homes. Food waste in our homes makes up about 39% of all food waste—about 42 billion pounds of food waste, and commercial food waste makes up about 61% of all food waste or 66 billion pounds of food waste. Feeding America focuses on reducing food waste on farms and in food service, manufacturing, and retail.Last year, the Feeding America network and our partners rescued 4.7 billion pounds of groceries. That food went directly to meals for people facing hunger. This makes Feeding America the largest food rescue organization in the country.Food rescue, or food recovery, is the practice of collecting high-quality food that would otherwise go to waste and distributing it to people facing hunger. 2020-2021高考英语 阅读理解训练经典题目(含答案)
2020-2021高考英语阅读理解训练经典题目(含答案)一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解City trees grow faster and die younger than trees in rural forestry, a new study finds. Over their lifetimes, then, urban trees will likely absorb less CO2 from the air than forest trees. As we all know, the earth would be freezing or burning hot without CO2. However, CO2is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps energy from the sun as/heat. That makes temperatures near the ground rise. Human activities, especially the widespread burning-of fossil(化石)fuels, have been sending extra greenhouse gases into the air. This has led to a rise in average temperatures across the globe.Studies had shown forests readily absorb CO2, but there hadn't been much data on whether city trees grow, die and absorb CO2at the same rate as forest trees do. So some researchers decided to find out.To figure out how quickly trees were growing, researchers tracked their diameters (the width of their trunks) between 2005 and 2014. A tree's diameter increases as it grows, just as a person's waist size increases as they gain weight. About half the weight of a tree is carbon, research has shown. Most of the rest is water. Over the nine years' tracking, the researchers found city trees absorbed four times as much carbon from the air as forest trees. However, they were twice as likely to die. So over the lifetime of each type of tree, forest trees actually absorbed more CO2.City trees grew faster because they had less competition for light from their neighbors. In a forest, trees tend to grow close together, shading their neighbors. Street trees also benefit from higher levels of nitrogen (氮)in rainwater. Nitrogen helps plants grow. Waste gases from gas-burning cars also contain nitrogen, thus enriching city air with nitrogen. Later, rainwater may wash much of it to the ground. Some street trees may also have better access to water than trees in the country because the underground water pipes can leak.(1)What can he known about CO2 from paragraph 2?A. It is one of the side effects of greenhouses.B. It greatly accelerates the process of global warming.C. It results from the widespread burning of fossil fuels.D. It prevents the earth from becoming unsuitable to live on.(2)Why did researchers track the diameters of trees?A. To know about their growth rates.B. To find out how much they weigh.C. To check whether they were healthy.D. To assess the carbon amounts in them.(3)What advantage do city trees have over forest trees?A. They are more likely to access growth promoters.B. They can enjoy more water coming from the air.C. They can enjoy more shade from neighbors.D. They are better at competing for light.(4)What will probably be talked about if the passage is continued?A. How urban trees can live longer.B. Why city living makes trees die young.C. How trees respond to dry soil conditions.D. Why faster-growing trees absorb more C02.【答案】(1)D(2)A(3)A(4)B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文。

AAny foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges. Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of NatureNeuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调).One of the study’s authors,Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system〞.This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs,Dr.Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A singlesyllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned. For this study, the researchers looked at 20 nonChinese speaki ng volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years. As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi〞 in three of its meanings:squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds. The lead author of the study,Patrick C.M.Wong,said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.1. When learning Chinese,a foreigner will find ________.A.he has a difficult time learning music at the same timeB.he has an easier time learning music at the same timeC.it is hard to master the tones required to speak and understandD.it is easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch2. Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.C.Because music training might help people with language study.D.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.3. The underlined word “intoned〞 in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by theword “____〞.A.created B.spelledC.seemed D.pronounced4. What would be the best title for this passage?A.Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English SpeakersB.Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language StudyC.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese LearningD.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs[参考答案 1—4、CBDB*********************************************************完毕4.〔2011·安徽卷〕BThink about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources〔来源〕, as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills〔风车〕began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power. For many centuries, people used windmills to grind〔磨碎〕wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s, when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.【文章大意】本文介绍了风能与风能运用的情况。

You don't even have to be the target of the had behavior," stated a researcher. The researchers worked with 81 persons, with occupations ranging from security to business to medicine, who were asked to complete online surveys over a 10-day period. Participants recorded their moods when they woke up; and in the evening, they described their experiences over the course of that day. Each morning the participants also viewed a short video, describing workplace interaction of some kind. Half of the mornings, the video included some kind of rudeness while the other half had some kind of warm interaction in the workplace. Rudeness was conveyed through various means, including a lack of eye contact or unpleasant language.Participants who watched the rudeness videos reported seeing or experiencing rudeness during the day, and they were also more likely to escape from fellow employees to avoid being the victims of rudeness themselves. They reported their overall work suffered that day as a result. Not all participants were affected by the rudeness videos, however. A few weeks before the study began, the participants completed an evaluation that measured their self-confidence and emotional stability among other things. The participants who scored higher on this evaluation were significantly less likely to be influenced by the rudeness.Consequently, one of the researchers recommended that companies hire managers who can limit exposure to rudeness, provide plenty of positive reinforcement (强化) and build a civil workplace environment. This, in turn, could help employees build their confidence levels and help them better handle workplace rudeness.(1)What is Paragraph 1 intended to show?A. The popularity of rudeness.B. A regular cause of rudeness.C. A new finding about rudeness.D. The common disadvantage of rudeness.(2)Why are the short videos played for the participants?A. To make them spread rudeness.B. To educate them on workplace interaction.C. To expose them to various aspects of rudeness.D. To teach them how to use right body languages.(3)What is the probable effect of watching the videos on some participants?A. Being unwilling to work.B. Poor ability to do their work.C. Serious emotional sufferings.D. Less interaction with others.(4)Who may not be affected by the rudeness videos?A.People positive and kind to themselves.B.People keeping calm in stressful situations.C.People owning confidence in others' ability.D.People participating in the rudeness experiment.【答案】(1)C(2)C(3)D(4)B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,研究表明,关于“无礼”行为作为一种“传染性”行为是可以避免的。

Here she picks her top reads.MatildaRoald DahlI once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl's writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda's battles with her cruel me parents and the bossy headmisres, Miss Trunchbull, are equally fumy and frightening, but they're also aspirational. After DarkHaruki MurakamiIt's about two sisters-Eri, a model who either won't or can't stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister. Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse "night people" who are hiding secrets.Gone GirlGillian FynnThere was a bit of me that didn't want to love this when everyone else on the planet did but the horror story is brilliant. There's tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It's a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what's going on is horribly enjoyableThe StandStephen KingThis is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. Roald Dahl22.Which of the following tells about Mari and Eri?A. CosmopolitanB. MatildaC. After DarkD. The Stand23.What kind of book is Gone Girl)A. A folk tale.B. A biography.C. A love story.D. A horror story.B"You can use me as a last resort(选择),and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it." This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids lacrosse(长曲木昆球)club.I guess that there's probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren't even on 1■■ At this point the unwilling parent speaks up,"Alright. Yes, I'll do it."I'm secretly relieved because I know there's real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kidswhile the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社区)as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services provides a real joy. Volunteering just feels so good.In that sense, I'm pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I'd freely like to admit. 高考英语 阅读理解试题(附答案)
高考英语阅读理解试题(附答案)一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解The new social robots, including Jibo, Cozmo, Kuri and Meccano M.A.X., bear some resemblance to assistants like Apple's Siri, but these robots come with something more. They are designed to win us over not with their smarts but with their personality. They are sold as companions that do more than talk to us. Time magazine hailed (称赞) the robots that "could fundamentally reshape how we interact with machines." But is reshaping how we interact with machines a good thing, especially for children? Some researchers in favor of the robots don't see a problem with this. People have relationships with many kinds of things. Some say robots are just another thing with which we can have relationships. To support their argument, roboticists sometimes point to how children deal with toy dolls. Children animate (赋予…生命) dolls and turn them into imaginary friends. Jibo, in a sense, will be one more imaginary friend, and arguably a more intelligent and fun one.Getting attached to dolls and sociable machines is different, though. Today's robots tell children that they have emotions, friendships, even dreams to share. In reality, the whole goal of the robots is emotional trickery. For instance, Cozmo the robot needs to be fed, repaired and played with. Boris Sofman, the chief executive of Anki, the company behind Cozmo, says that the idea is to create "a deeper and deeper emotional connection ... And if you neglect him, you feel the pain of that." What is the point of this, exactly? What does it mean to feel the pain of neglecting something that feels no pain at being neglected, or to feel anger at being neglected by something that doesn't even know it is neglecting you? This should not be our only concern. It is troubling that these robots try to empathize with children. Empathy allows us to put ourselves in the place of others, to know what they are feeling. Robots, however, have no emotions to share, and they cannot put themselves in our place. No matter what robotic creatures "say" or squeak, they don't understand our emotional lives. They present themselves as empathy machines, but they are missing the essential equipment. They have not been born, they don't know pain, or death, or fear. Robot thinking may be thinking, but robot feeling is never feeling, and robot love is never love. What is also troubling is that children take robots' behavior to indicate feelings. When the robots interact with them, children take this as evidence that the robots like them, and when robots don't work when needed, children also take it personally. Their relationships with the robots affect their self-esteem (自尊). In one study, an 8-year-old boy concluded that the robot stopped talking to him because the robot liked his brothers better. For so long, we dreamed of artificial intelligence offering us not only simple help but conversation and care. Now that our dream is becoming real, it is time to deal with the emotional downside of living with robots that "feel."(1)How are the new social robots different from Siri?A. They are intended to teach children how to talk.B. They are designed to attract people with their smarts.C. Their main function is to evaluate children's personality.D. They have a new way to communicate with human beings.(2)In Paragraph 3 Cozmo is used as an example to show that the social robots ______.A. are deeply connected with human beingsB. are unable to build a real relationship with childrenC. are so advanced that they can feel the pain of human beingsD. are not good enough to carry out the instructions of children(3)The underlined phrase "essential equipment" in Paragraph 4 refers to ______.A. emotionB. painC. fearD. thinking(4)Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?I: Introduction P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: ConclusionA. AZoos divide opinion : there are those who think it is cruel to keep animals locked up while others believe zoos are essential for the survival of endangered species. To argue that zoos imprison animals is to misunderstand what zoos are about. Without zoos many of the creatures we love and admire would no longer exist. Every single day, over one hundred animal species vanish. Scientists predict that as early as 2050 one quarter of the Earth’s species will become extinct. Some animals are in danger because they are hunted. Alarmingly, the population of tigers has already fallen by ninety-five percent. Other species are in danger because of a lack of food. For example, there are fewer than 1300 giant pandas leftin the wild.Zoos have special breeding programmes to help those animals at risk. These breeding programmes are proving extremely successful. As Irene Shapiro from Zoo and Wildlife Support says, “the Puerto Rican Parrot has grown in numbers from just thirteen to about eighty-five and the Golden Lion Tamarin Monkey, which has almost ceased to exist twenty years ago, has been reintroduced back into the wild. ”Unfortunately, not everyone understands this important role zoos play. For example, Brian Featherstone from the Anti-Zoo Forum says, “I can’t believe we take animals from the wild and put them in cages for the entertainment of the public! We should view them on film or TV in their natural environment.,’However, this misses the point. A zoo does more than display animals to the public. It ensures their survival. Without zoos you would not be able to see many of these animals on TV or anywhere else!26. What’s the writer’s attitude towards zoos?A. He shows no opinion either for or against them.B. He thinks that they are unnecessary and cruel.C. He believes they play an important environmental role.D. He expresses a desire that more of them be built.【答案】C【解析】推理判断题。
