目前，我国的产品说明书的翻译有许多不尽如人意的地方，概括起来，是由于不懂英语说明书的句型和选词不当所致。
以下，我们就来讨论一下说明书的句型和选词问题。
一、产品说明书的若干句型句型是语言结构的要素。
无论英译汉还是汉译英都离不开句型。
学习、掌握和使用句型是翻译工作者的必由之路。
现将英文产品说明书的若干常见句型说明如下：1．（情态动词）be＋形容词（或过去分词）＋目的状语这种句型用语文章开头，说明该产品是做什么用的，例如：1）本冲床主要用于冲孔、落料、弯曲、浅拉伸、剪切等冷冲工艺。
This press is mainly suitable for cold working operations, such as punching, blanking, bending, shallow drawing, cutting and so on.2）该产品用于温度225℃以下的热水管或蒸汽管道上。

如果一味的按照中文字面翻译，肯定会闹出笑话，且读者也难以接受。
有些技术人员在准备技术文件时，随意将车间中使用的“俚语”写入文中，叫人百思不得其解。
如“盘根”这个名词，它会使人想起“盘根错节”这个成语，按字面意思该名词可译6成twisted roots 然而该译名如果出现在机械产品英文使用说明书上，则会令人瞋目结舌。
又如常出现的“反白”，这个名词在人们思维中的形象是眼睛翻白死亡来临的意思。
面对这些名词，如果脱离中文的上下文，译者要选准对应的英译名词，首先必须了解该词的基本内涵，最好的办法是看实物。
如盘根实际上是密封件，由此可悟出该词是英文名词packing的音译名，但走样太大，使人无法想象出该词的英文原名。
“反白”这个名词，当你在车间里看到柔性很好，可作密封用的纤维纸板时，就会茅塞顿开，原来它是fibre的音译名。
为了避免这种没有必要的难处，技术人员写说明书时不应使用这些不规范的名词，而译者在碰上这些“不速之客”时要仔细考虑到底是什么，并设法用英文还其庐山真面目。
还有一种情况，一些技术人员用只有自己明白的名词来表达某种概念，结果是瞎子吃云吞－自己有数，而译者则花费了很多时间搜索难以找出一个对应的译名来。
如“张口”，按字面可译成opened mouth，但该译名与原意大相径庭。
看了图示后才明白原来作者笔下的“张口”是指轴与轴相连的两个端面的间隙。
这个名词可试译成gap between two end faces。
看来对这样的名词，只有采用解释性词组才能表达清楚。
因此，从某种意义上讲，中文名词规范化是产生优良译文的保证。
特别是一些产品说明书中名词不规范的现象屡见不鲜，值得引起大家的注意。
7汉语名词的翻译一定要有个度，超过这个度，意思就会发生畸变。
在阅读中文产品说明书时，译者会发现中文一个名词在不用的情境中，其概念是迥然不同的。
如“总图”，就要根据不同的要求译出，对于总体布置来说可译成general plan，general layout，但对于机械设备来说，宜译成assembly drawing，这样才能为外国人所接受。
再如“扳手”这个名词，可译成wrench，也可译成spanner。
前者是美国用语，后者是英国用语，然而一般说来，spanner的头部是固定的，而wrench的头部是可调节的。
故宜将头部调节的扳手译成wrench，如adjustable wrench（活动扳手）；头部不可调节的扳手译成spanner，如double spanner双头扳手。
在汉译英中，一个中文名词如有几个英文名词在字面上与它相对应，该如何处理呢？如：垫片，常用的译名有washer，gasket，shim。
因材料不同，作用不同，要选择较合适的词，利用英英词典分辨差异是个好办法。
朗文词典对washer是这样定义的：a ring of metal, leather, rubber, etc...to give a softer or larger pressing surface。
由此可见，washer应是环状的，制作的材料比较广泛，金属、皮革等都可以，形成一个较软或较大的受压面。
而gasket是a flat piece of soft material which is placed between two surfaces so that stream, oil, gas, etc., cannot escape。
很清楚，这类垫片选用软质材料制作，主要用来8防止流体、油、水的泄漏。
至于shim，韦博大词典中是这样定义的：a thing often tapered piece of material (as wood, metal or stone) used to fill in space between things (as for support, leveling or adjustment of fit)。
从以上三个词的定义看，washer通用性大，但用于密封宜用gasket，而shim则适用于调节，如bearing shim（轴承垫片）。
另外又如管子，该名词可选用的译名有pipe，tube，hose，在一定的情境中选用什么词要具体分析后才能确定。
一般pipe较通用，而往往是连接起来使用；tube是用金属、玻璃、橡胶制成的圆管，一般不连接使用，相对较短，如test tube；hose通常指绕性易弯的管子。
在机械产品说明书有关寻找故障的说明书中，常常会发现车间工人的用语，如“拉毛”如何译呢？最有效的办法是深入到装配试车现场，搞清楚拉毛的真实含义，这样译出来的名词就不会出纰漏。
根据拉毛发生的原因，使用scratch这个译名比较妥贴。
三、药品说明书的翻译9中外药品说明书格式大致相同，虽然其内容千差万别，但其项目及说明方式仍大同小异。
我国有些药厂翻译说明书时不参阅英美国家说明书，却想当然地用中文去套，就不可避免地要出现错误。
