what引导宾语从句时在从句中作主语、宾语或表语，表示“所……的……”

1.表示“……的东西或事情”，相当于“the thing that...; all that...;

everything that....”They’ve done what they can to help her.

他们已经做了他们能做到一切去帮助了。

2.表示“……的时间”,相当于the time that：

After what seemed like hours he came out with a bitter smile.

似乎过了几个小时他才苦笑着出来。

The young girl was too frightened to speak, standing there for what seemed like hours.

3.表示“……的人”，相当于the person that…。如：

He is not what he was a few years ago.

表建议、命令、要求等动词后的宾语从句

1.表示“命令”order, command, direct

He commanded that it be sent back. 他命令把它送回去。

The King ordered that the man (should) be released. 国王命令释放那人。

The general directed that the prisoners should be set free at once. 将军指示立即释放那些俘虏。

2.表示“建议”advise, suggest, propose, recommend

He suggested that we should leave early. 他建议我们早点动身。

The doctor advised that he change his job. 医生劝他换工作。

They recommend that this tax be abolished. 他们建议取消这种税。

The committee proposed (that) Mr. Day be elected. 委员会建议推选戴先生。

注意：suggest表“表明、暗示”则要用陈述语气，比较：

He suggested that we (should) stay for dinner. 他建议我们留下吃饭。

What he said suggested that he was lying. 他说的话表明他在说谎。

3.表示“要求”demand, require, request, urge, desire, insist

He requires that I (should) appear. 他要求我出场。

I requested that he should return my book. 我请求他把书还给我。

They demanded that the right to vote be given to every adult man. 他们要求给予每个成年男子以选举权。

He urges that the restrictions be lifted. 他敦促取消这些限制。

They urged that relief work should be given priority. 他们敦促将救济工作放在优先位置。

I desire the patient should have a bath every day. 我希望病人每天洗澡。

He insisted that I (should) go with them. 他坚持要我同他们一起去。

注意：insist表示“坚持要求”用should +动词原形，表示“坚持认为”用陈述语气，比较：

He insisted that I had read his letter. 他坚持说我看过他的信。
