• Aunt Dee’s first husband whittled the dash, said Maggie so low that you almost couldn’t hear you.
• From that, we can know that Maggie feels herself inferior than others, and she is very shy. She has no hope, and she just adores her sister.

Dee
.
• Dee is not appreciated by the author. At first, Dee wanted to get rid of her own culture. She hated her humble house and never wanted to take her friends to her family. She pursed the white culture and received good education of the white community. When the black movement began, she simply took her tradition that she once hated as a thing to show off. She carefully took pictures of her humble house, took the churn and dasher as something artistic, wore strange clothes and changed her name, which totally is a superficial imitation of the black tradition.

Paragraph 1
2. The “I” here is the narrator, not the author, and the author is using the firstperson narration in telling the story. As we read on, we will find this narrator is also the main character, the protagonist, of the story.
Paragraph 1
• 3. Words like “I was looking for myself” and “I am nobody but myself” point out the central theme of the novel— searching for self-identity. The narrator was probably asking himself questions like “Who am I?” “What do I want?” “Where did I come from and where am I going?” in order to find his own identity as an individual. • The theme of a story is the central and dominating idea, the general meaning of a story, or the insight the entire story reveals.

About her works
Her works include THE Third Life of Grange Copeland(1970), Meridian(1976), a biography of Langston Hughers(1973), a volume of Revolutionary Petunias and Other Poems(1973),a collection of short stories in Love and Trouble: Storiescent novel The Temple of My Familiar(1989). Her most significant novel is the Color of Purple, published in 1982, which won all the three major book awards in America---the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award and the national Book Critics Circle Award. This novel was an instant bestseller and made into an equally successful movie in 1985, directed by Steven Spielberg and staring Whoopi Goldberg. Alice Walker is at her best when portraying people living in the rural areas where the writer was born and grew up. As a black writer, Walker is particularly interested in examining the relationships among the blacks themselves.

What is African-American Civil Rights Movement?
• The African-American Civil Rights Movement encompasses social movements in the United States whose goals were to end racial segregation and discrimination against black Americans and to secure legal recognition and federal protection of the citizenship rights enumerated in the constitutional amendments adopted after the Civil War. • This article covers the phase of the movement between 1954 and 1968, particularly in the South. • The movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. Between 1955 and 1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced crisis situations between activists and government authorities. Federal, state, and local governments, businesses, and communities often had to respond immediately to these situations that highlighted the inequities faced by African Americans.

Background
The Main Idea The story begins with the narrator, a black woman, awaiting the homecoming of her daughter Dee, an educated woman who now lives in the city. Accompanying her is her younger daughter Maggie. As they wait, the narrator reveals details of the family history, specifically the relationship between her two daughters. To the mother‟s surprise, Dee, who has been scornful of the black, is now delighted by the old way of life, and she is even more interested in the old handmade quilts pieced by Grandma. However, these quilts have already been promised to Maggie. Although Maggie is intimidated enough to surrender the beloved quilts to Dee, the mother snatches the quilts form Dee and offers her instead some of the machine-stitched ones, which Dee does not want.
