My ConclusionThe Analysis of Symbolism in The Old Man and the SeaAbstract:The Old Man and the Sea is a song of praise about human spirit. Hemingway intends to tell us his philosophy of life: although life is a lonely battle, it is a struggle that man should fight on with courage and endurance; and the “meaning” of life is not to be found in “success” or “failure”, but rather in the struggle itself. The Old Man and the Sea, praised by a famous writer as “the most excellent simple article in this generation”, is a masterpiece of the unyielding man—Hemingway. But with regard to the symbolism, the sea, the Shark and the Marlin have special symbolical meanings. Here the article will analyze its symbolism thoroughly through some aspects such as the leading character, the living environment and Hemingway’s philosophy of life reflected by the symbols, to get a better understanding of its value.Key Words:The symbolic factors; iceberg theory; the living environment; Ernest Hemingway1. Introduction:Ernest Hemingway was born on July21, in 1898, at Oak Park, Illinois. He is famous both in American literature and the world literature, In his childhood, influenced by his father, Hemingway was interested in music, pictures, hunting, fishing and especially the love of fishing extremely affected all his life and he drew much writing inspiration from his fishing experiences.Taking adventures also plays a vital role in his life and for that he experienced the two world wars. As a r epresentative of the “Lost Generation”, Hemingway p ublished the books such as The Sun Also Rises, the book deals with the living attitude of the post-war generation, at the time it is believed that “God is dead”, they thought life was nothing and meaningle ss. In this case, Hemingway became the spokesperson of the Lost Generation. The Old Man and The Sea was published in 1952. The novel was regarded as Hemingway’s best novel. The praises are not only from the reviewers but also from a board spectrum of the mass, from ordinary readers to fellow men of letters. The publishing of this work showed that Hemingway could still achieve his peak, whether or not the reviewers and critics or the public could appreciate the true value of his works.2. The BackgroundThe Old Man and the Sea is about an o ld man’s life. Hemingway’s life was active and adventurous, but it was full of pains, though. The First and the Second World Wars had affected Hemingway a lot, he had once joined the army and had been injured in Italy, and he suffered a lot. He was disappointed with the world and pessimistic about the fate of the man. In his early days’ novel, The Sun also rises depicts the war, describing the bewilderment of the European and American young people, then he was looked down upon by someone around him and some writers[1]. “You are all the generation that has been at a loss.” So, seeking way out and the understanding of life is the theme that Hemingway wanted to explore. He was unyielding, so he created the “the character of unyielding man”. From all Hemingway’s works, we can find that when Hemingway chose personage, he especially liked to choose beggar, hunter, solider and so on, they could protect their dignity by resisting with the world which is full of hostility, they maintain a graceful demeanour under great force, but on target. The characters of the protagonist are different from that of the early days’ novel. For example, the leading character Jordan in For whom the Bell Tolls is a hero who devotes himself to the career he incites the evil force, which reflects the cherished desire for opposing the fascism war of the people, which is full of wide social meaning and the time’s breathe. All leading characters in his novels show: he was an unyielding man, and has the desire to be the best, all these can be improved by a strong mind. The distinctive writing style of Hemingway is his iceberg theory and symbolism. The novel is like an iceberg, the one-eighth reveals above the water, the other seven-eighths hide deeply in the water, which needs the reader himself to understand. In other words, one has tokeep a close eye on Hemingway’s words and reading between the lines because of his highly symbolic language.3. The Symbolism in the book3.1 The Old Man— the unyielding characterThe Old Man and the Sea is about an old fisherman Santiago who fights with nature. Not catching a fish for eighty-four days, he still keeps on trying without being despaired. He goes far out into the sea and catches a huge marlin after three days’ patient sailing. On his way home sharks come and attack, Santiago tries his best to fight but fails to prevent the marlin from being eaten. In the end he returns with nothing but the skeleton of the fish. Many people hold the view that the novel is about the life of Hemingway himself. Poor and unlucky, but he is not easily defeated, though. The old man goes fishing lonely, his eyes are blue like the sea, never depressed. At the beginning of the novel, the old man just catches up “misfortune”. In eighty- four days, he has not caught a single fish. As a fishing man, that is unlucky. The boy who spends a long time with him also has to leave. Hemingway had once joined in the Second World War and the Spanish War. The society after war is out of order. The fantastic phenomenon of the war and the society brought deep spiritual injury to Hemingway, which can be said that he survived the war after many perils [2]. We find that, after For whom the Bell Tolls, Hemingway did not publish any important article, Across the River and Into the Trees suffered criticism again. Numerous critics even affirmed Hemingway’s intelligence had already exhausted, he had nothing fresh to say, and such situation is so alike the circumstance of the old man at the beginning. In order to prove he is a “geezer”, the old man must catch a big fish, concerning dignity and honor. To Hemingway, he must write works that is the best in all his life. The old man thinks that “eighty-fifth” is a lucky day, “I can seize a big fish of one thousand pounds”. After the old man catches the biggest fish that he has never seen, he has already exhausted, his hands are not only deserted, but also full of scars. In my opinion, the words “a loser who can not be defeated” can’t be departed from enquiring into the dual personality of Hemingway. At the beginning, the old man sail to sea every day, but he has not caught a fish in eighty-four days, this kind of failure is out of luck enough, and the little boy’s departure makes the old man’s circumstances more miserable, but in such situation, the old man reveals the unyielding character perfectly: When his big fish has been eaten by the shark with skeleton surplus rested, he asks himself: “ What defeated you?” “Nothing…it is me who goes too far.” The old man admits his failur e bravely, but he believes his own ability absolutely [3]. He believes even though he fails, he is still brave incomparably, and has not been defeated by the shark in spirit, he does not lose heart, because he believes that “Once he has been defeated, the thing is easy.” Hemingway does not tell the story simply, but reveal his living experience, emotion and thought symbolically.3.2 The Boy— the Supplement for the Old ManThe little boy plays a very important part in The Old Man and the Sea. The boy learns fishing from the old man from five years old, the features of the boy shows the old man’s character from another side, though he was little, he is not childish. He not only learns the capability of fishing, but also the spirit. The boy is leaving, the old man is unwilling to let the boy feel embarrassed, so he does not let the boy follow him, he does not let the boy affected by his bad luck, the boy insists coming back for several times, though the reality confirmed the failure of the old man,the old man declined for many times, but which can not hold back the child. He is not afraid of failure and faces the failure bravely, because in the boy’s heart, the old man is a “wonderful fisher” and different from others. He is the power source of the unyielding man who never bows to difficulties. The old man is under the boy’s encouragement, he realizes that: “If the boy is not here, I have been died out already.” The child brings happiness and hope. Hemingway reveals sympathy to the weak man and scorn the rich, so the child makes decision to return to the side of the old man when the old man feels lonely and sad. The return of the boy reveals that he turns a blind eye to the authority of his father and the superstition to the fate. The image of the boy is the elaboration of the writer in making out the line of the story, and the information that the boy reflects is beyond the information thatthe writer hopes on the fish, the old man and sea. The boy helps him when the others deserts. “If the boy were here”. The s tory mentions it for nine times, which symbolizes that the child is the strength for the weak man when he fails and is disappointed [4].To Hemingway, man has the power to struggle for life, no matter what result may be. According to him, human beings are not totally hopeless in the world. Even though he knows that the human struggle is useless in face of the natural forces, he encourages people to strive. In this sense, Hemingway’s philosophy of life is the further and heroic development of the naturalists. In addition, Hemingway’s philosophy of life is also helpful to the people today. When faced with the difficulties and setbacks in life, many people complain about the fate and chance; they feel depressed, losing hope towards life. This is not the right attitude towards life. Hemingway tells us that a man should face and overcome the difficulties in life with decency, dignity, and heroism. This is Hemingway’s ideal of manhood, and Santiago is the perfect representative of Hemingway Code Hero. So we should learn from Santiago. When we suffer from the setbacks in life, we should fight against them to the end despite the pain, and display great grace and courage during the battle. This is just the right attitude we should have towards life.3.3 The Sea —Heming way’s Survival Environment. The sea is the symbol that stands for the world and society where man lives. The sea is boundless, full of various marlins and sharks. And the sea is cruel, just like the real world where Hemingway lives. It is the substance world that the old man depends on, it is all content of his living, the sea prepares the mystical big fish, it supplies a place to reveal the old man’s courage, the sea means a lot. The old man always takes the sea as a woman, but it often swallows some stron g birds. So in the old man’s opinion, the sea is cruel, and he reveals resentful manner to the cruel sea and sympathy with the weak birds. Connecting the reality of American at that time, we can see the democratic power was suffered oppression cruelly, all the Americans were covered by the atmosphere of worrying and being nervous, but as sharp eyes, the writer wants to expose the recreancy of the people at that time. When living alone at the sea, the old man saw the sun arising and setting, being a couple with the fish and bird, talking with the wind and the sea, he becomes one part of the sea. “The sea is kind and very beautiful.” At last, it gives a big fish to the old man. But th e sea is also cruel. The old man’s loneness and happiness, fight and failur e are connected with the sea[5]. The relationship between the old man and the sea is not only relying on the sea, but also fighting with the sea. He not only gains living conditions, living technique, but also gains friends and opponent. The sea is his living and battle field, it also will be his last destination, and it has a very important relation with Hemingway. Hemingway is a writer who only describes the man, and he has no works known as taking the woman as a leading role, as one comment has said: The woman he wrote was not real, because his mother’s chaste, arrogant and willful character affected Hemingway. This reality made Hemingway restless and suffered, and then the concentration of spirit became a good medicine that cures his inner heart. So the “kind and beautiful sea” became ideal portrait of his inner heart. In the novel, Santiago battles nobly to earn the treasure, and then fights against sharks to save the treasure. The struggle defines him as a real hero. Though he loses the marlin in the end, he has won the sea battle and honored himself. The sea is just like the society. Like the sea too, the society contains many hidden treasures. A true man must have sufficient will and courage to find the treasures and fight the predators. The heroic man will regard the struggle not as a burden, but as a challenge that prove his courage, and he should fight it on to the end even in the price of his life. I think the fight with the marlin is in fact the fight between the writer and the troubles in the society at that time.4. Hemingway’s Philosophy of Life4.1 Hemingway’s Attitude towards the Society Reflected through the Symbol of the SeaSea stands for the world all men live. Men should fight for the treasures and against dangers Hemingway think Santiago gets nothing within 84 days, is laughed by all the people, considered as a loser, but he still insists on going fishing without complaining to the sea andreminds the old time when he attained a lot from the sea. The author explains to us that we should not hate the world we are in although it is cruel sometime. What is more, he does not agree with those people who give up or just wait for the miracles happen to improve their lives. Man must know what they want and try his best to fight and protect it as what the author did in his life. Hemingway is thought by society that he has run out of his intelligence in literary, but he did not lose his hope and continue with his career[6]. Finally The Old Man and the Sea comes up. Hemingway never gives up searching for his treasures in the world and finding it in the end because he knows the world, it is just like the sea with full of dream and nightmare, he knows the world is fair just like the sea. Both Santiago and Hemingway show to us that world is cruel but worth fighting for. The world is beautiful whenever it offers you treasures or dangers. Do not lose hope and complain to the world but win your honor with your fight.4.2Hemingway’s Attitude towards the Enemy Reflected through the Symbol of SharkShark is the dark force in the novel, the shark that comes first and alone is different from the other sharks which eat up the old man’s marlin together. I think this shark stands for the first reporter who announces Hemingway fail to succeed any more. In the novel, the old man fights with this shark fairly. This shark is described as a warrior by Hemingway, he is huge, powerful and beautiful. It is he who drives the old man’s emotion to protect his marlin. And the first shark even dies as a warrior. Hemingway put a lot of focus to describe his death to show he is special. The first shark wins the old man’s respect even they are enemies a nd one of them must fail in the price of his life. We can see that Hemingway respect the first one who dare to hold a battle with him because he know it need a lot of courage. Shark is the dark force in the novel, but Hemingway put Some study shows the shark stand for the literary reporters in Hemingway’s time, I do agree. To the opposite, the other sharks are the true evil force and ignored by the old man. They are thieves with no courage to fight along. Comparing with the first shark, they are small, ugly and cold-blood. The old man looks down upon these sharks. As for Hemingway himself, the shark symbolizes the reporters who come up to talk about his failure. Hemingway hates these who have no thought but just follow other’s opinion to show theirintelligence. They want nothing but money just like the shark want meat to survive. They are not worth fighting and only can be ignored.5. My ConclusionThe Old Man and the Sea is given high comment by both readers and critics just because of the artful and successful use of symbolism. The title is a symbol that the old man stands for the human beings and the sea symbolizes nature. Symbolism is a noted writing characteristic in The Old Man and the Sea. The old man, the sea, the marlin, the lions and so on and so forth, to a large degree has deep symbolic meanings respectively. I want to say that the book is like a complex building built with unaccountable symbols. One can get different kinds of understanding in accordance with a variety of points of views. And one also attains different kinds of symbols from several respects. In addition, by using symbolism Hemingway succeeded in reaching his goal of conveying the main theme of the story-courage is a way leading to success. In short, a man can be destroyed but not be defeated. Just as Hemingway once spoke highly of his artistic achievement in the great work that The Old Man and the Sea is the only best work during his lifelong literary creation.Bibliography[1] Baker, Carlos. Pride and PrejudiceI. IntroductionPart One: About the Book.Name: Pride and PrejudiceAuthor: Jane AustenMain characters: Mr. and Mrs. BennetElizabeth BennetMr. DarcyMr. BingleyJane BennetMary BennetCatherine BennetLydia BennetMr. WickhamMr. CollinsNarrations: First and third person narrationTime: Pride and Prejudice was first written in 1796 as First Impressions. It was rewritten (and retitled) in 1812 and published in 1813.Part Two: About the Author.Jane Austen (1775-1817) was born at Steventon rectory in Hampshire, England. Austen was the youngest daughter of the large family, with six brothers and one sister. Her father is a clergyman. When Austen was eight years old, she was sent to Oxford to be educated. Because of some accident, she returned home to continue her education. From 1785 to 1786, Austen and her sister attended the Reading Ladies Boarding School, where they studied French, spelling, needlework, music, and dancing. Forced to return home for economic reasons, Austen continued to develop her literary mind under the guidance of her father.Beginning in her teen years, Austen wrote poems, stories, and comic pieces for the amusement of her family. She compiled several of the pieces written between 1787 and 1793 into three bound n otebooks, which are now referred as Austen’s Juvenilia. Austen was also exposed to drama and comedy. Austen also became to sketch out ideas for the novel that would later become Sense and Sensibility. In 1795, Austen met Tom Lefroy, the nephew of their neighbors at Steventon. Austen spent a great deal of time with Tom Lefroy and had romantic feelings with him. Unfortunately, a marriage between the two was impractical, and Lefroy’s family soon sent him away. After her brief romance with Lefroy, Austen began work on a second novel called First Impressions, which would later become Pride and Prejudice. While living at Chawton, Austen saw the anonymous publication of four of her novels: Sense and Sensibility in 1811, Pride and Prejudice in 1813, Mansfield Park in 1814, and Emma in 1815. In July 1816, Austen completed the first draft of her next novel, titled The Elliots, which would later be published as Persuasion. In early 1816, Austen suffered an illness (Most biographers believe that she suffered from Addis on’s disease) that led her to death the following year. Despite her illness, Austen continued to work on her writing. She revised the ending to The Elliots and started work on Sandition. She died on July 8, 1817, leaving Sandition unfinished, and was burie d at the city’s famous cathedral. The two novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published posthumously as a set in 1817.Jane Austen never married in her whole life. She lived most of her life in a community much like the one we find in Pride and Prejudice. Austen’s novel, focusing on courtship and marriage, remain well-known for their satiric depictions of English society and the manners of the time. Her insights of the lives of women during the late eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century –in addition to her ability to handle form, satire, and irony – have made her one of the most studied and influential novelists of her time.II. Summary of the BookThe narrative opens with Mr. Bingley, a wealthy, charming and social young bachelor, moving into Netherfield house in the neighborhood of the Bennet family. Mr. Bingley is soonwell received, while his friend Mr. Darcy makes a less favorable first impression by appearing proud at a ball that they attend. Mr. Bingley singles out Elizabeth’s elder sister, Jane, for particular attention. And it soon becomes apparent that they have formed an attachment to each other. By contrast, Darcy and Elizabeth do not develop a good relationship with each other. On paying a visit to Mr. Bingley’s sister, Jane catches a cold and is forced to stay at Netherfield for several days. Elizabeth arrives to take care of her sister. Mr. Darcy begins to perceive his attachment to Elizabeth.Mr. Collins pays a visit to the Bennets. It soon becomes apparent that Mr. Collins has to choose a wife from the Bennet sisters and Elizabeth has been singled out. At the same time, Elizabeth forms an acquaintance with Mr. Wickham, a military officer. From Mr. Wickham, Elizabeth knows something bad about Mr. Darcy, which makes Elizabeth have more prejudice against Mr. Darcy. At a ball given by Mr. Bingley at Netherfield, Mr. Darcy becomes aware of a general expectation that Mr. Bingley and Jane will marry. But the Bennet family, with the exception of Jane and Elizabeth, behave in poor manners at the ball. The following morning, Mr. Collins asks Elizabeth to marry him, but is refused. Mr. Collins recovers and becomes engaged to Elizabeth’s close friend Charlotte. Mr. Bingley returns to London suddenly, and Elizabeth is convinced that Mr. Darcy separates him from her sister Jane.In the spring, Elizabeth visits Charlotte and Mr. Collins. They visit Rosings Park, home of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy’s aunt. Coincidentally, Darcy also arrives to visit. Darcy again finds himself attracted to Elizabeth and proposes to her. Elizabeth, however, has just learned of Darcy’s role in separating Mr. Bingley from Jane. So she gets angry with him and quarrels with him. Mr. Darcy responds with a letter, explaining his actions. Elizabeth later came to acknowledge the truth of Darcy’s words. Some months later, Elizabeth and her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner visit Pemberley, Darcy’s estate, believing that he will be absent for the day. But Mr. Darcy returns unexpectedly. Though surprised, Mr. Darcy shows welcome to their visitation. He treats the Gardiners friendly and introduces Elizabeth to his sister. And Elizabeth begins to pay attention to Mr. Darcy. At this time, Elizabeth knows that her sister Lydia has run away with Mr. Wickham.Lydia and Wickham are soon found, and then married. They visit home, and Lydia speaks carelessly that it is Mr. Darcy who finds the couple and negotiates their marriage at great expense. Elizabeth is shocked at it. Mr. Bingley returns suddenly and asks Jane to marry him and she immediately accepts.Lady Catherine de Bourgh later shows up in Longbourn. She warns Elizabeth not to marry Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth refuses her demands. Angrily, Lady Catherine leaves and tells her nephew on Elizabeth’s bad behavior, hoping that Mr. Darcy will not marry her. However, this brings hope to Darcy that Elizabeth’s opinion of him may have changed. He visits Longbourn and proposes again and now Elizabeth accepts.III. My Comments on the BookPride and Prejudice was the representative work of Jane Austen. It gives a vivid expression of the reactionary and traditional country life and people’s minds during the 18th centuries and the 19th centuries in Britain to us. This great novel not only attracted thousands of readers i n Austen’s time, but also gave a special feeling to today’s people. I like this book very much.I always think why the title is Pride and Prejudice. I have been confused for a long time, but now I understand. Pride and Prejudice are the things that help determine the actions of the two main characters and the development of the plot. In this sense, the story is about pride and prejudice, about the effects of these vices on people and events. Pride refers to Darcy’s behavior, and prejudice links with Elizab eth’s view on Darcy. Pride produces prejudice.“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Everybody knows the first sentence of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The famous opening sentence, which is humorous and famous, represents the perfect marriage between the content and style. I can find the same echo from this opening sentence in many parts of the novel. In the whole book, various combinations, comparison and contrasts of different characters and situations are presented by the author. Some people hold the view that the author failed to narrate several of the characters, such as Lydia and Mr. Wickham. It is no doubt true that the novel would be richer if we know Lydia’s and Mr. Wickham’s experience. And so on. As to my own conclusion, I do not agree with this point of view. I think there should be main characters and other characters in a novel. If the author writes too much about other characters, then main characters will fade. At the same time, leaving some room for readers to imagine is also of great importance. In this novel, Mrs. Bennet is a representative of the generality of people who consider the gaining of a son-in-low in terms of the acquisition of property. It is this attitude that makes her not only comic but also shocking and at times disgusting. As to my opinion, marriage should mainly base on sentiment rather than economic conditions. True love is much important than money.Elizabeth Bennet is the protagonist of the novel and Mr. Darcy is the male protagonist of the novel. The course of Elizabeth and Darcy’s relationship is decided when Darcy overcomes his pride, and Elizabeth overcomes her prejudice, leading to their coming together at last.Love is really a wonderful thing. If one pursues a true love he should never give up or submit to anything. Stick to the principle and do not be afraid of misunderstanding. I believe one day happiness will come true.。

英语读书报告(优秀7篇)英语读书报告篇一Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice is a lighthearted tale of love and marriage in eighteenth-century England. It centers on the elder sisters of the Bennet family, Jane and Elizabeth. Their personalities, misunderstandings and the roles of pride and prejudice play a lavishing story. This story is told from third point of view. From my perspective Jane Austen wanted to convey love wins over prejudice and to not just take in the saying of first impression but to look in the person's character deeper. Jane Austin was born in 1775 in Stevenson, Hampshire. Her family wasn't rich but managed to give her a decent education. She was the seventh of eight children of her father, a clergyman. Like other young women of her social class, Jane and her sister Cassandra were educated mostly at home in subjects of music, drawing, painting, needlework, and social behavior. Her father's encouragement and her own enjoyment in reading led Jane to became very well read. At fourteen she began to write little plays for home theatricals. She also wrote nonsense story's to entertain her family. Jane would spend the majority of the evening in the corner of the room with her manuscript and blotter observing the world surrounding her. She would write when the room was quiet and if she were interrupted, she would cover her manuscript with a blotter and continued when the room was silent again. Before Jane Austen died of cancer in 1817 at Winchester, she had already published six successful novels: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion, respectively. Jane Austen is now buried in the ancient cathedral in Winchester of her native Hampshire. Pride and Prejudice lets you travel through lives back then but also she portrays the lives of modern days. You can read it and you might be able to recall some parts of the book as your life, but in a different time period如何写英语读书报告篇二技术部新员工工作总结来到公司已经有一个多月了,在公司的点点滴滴都让我受益匪浅!不管是在原画、动画还是软件的运用上都让我学到了很多的知识!这些知识可能是我在人生中重要的一笔!作为公司新人,在工作实践中我学到了很多知识。

Pursuit of Freedom in Uncle Tom’s CabinIntroductionUncle Tom’s cabin is a novel by the American female novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe published in 1852. In this novel, Mrs. Stowe criticized the slavery and expressed the compassion for the black slaves. Therefore, the novel had a great effect on Africa Americans and slavery in the US, and it also influenced the Civil War’s breaking out to some degree so that the President Lincoln called the author “the little lady who started the big war”. Mrs. Stowe, born in the State of Connecticut, was a teacher at Hartford Female Academy and she was also a pious Christian. As a Christian, she regarded slavery inhumane.A summary of the bookThe story took place in the 1850s. Uncle Tom, an honest slave on the Shelby plantation, is respected by his owners and all the slaves on this plantation. However, Tom has to be sold because Mr. Shelby, the owner of the plantation, is deeply in debt to a slaver called Haley. Along with Tom, a boy called Harry, the child of his wife's servant Eliza, is to be sold as well. Though Tom is sorrowful, he still vows that he won’t run away. Because he knows if he did so, his master would be caught in debt so deeply that he would have to sell all the slaves.Just before Tom is taken away, Mrs. Shelby promises him that she will buy him back as soon as she can gather the funds. Eventually Tom was sold to a kindly master named Mr. St. Clare.Eliza, however, cannot bear to part with her son and escapes the night before he is to be taken from her. She escapes successfully and reaches a Quaker village where she is reunited with her husband George, who has also escaped from his master’s plantation. They spend a night in the family and set off to Canada. Though there are slave hunters hunting them and George also has a firefight with these hunters, they arrived in Canada successfully at last.Tom befriends his new master and especially his young daughter Eva, who shares Tom’s deep religious faith and devotion. Unfortunately, Eva becomes ill and is going to die. She accepts the news peacefully and tells her family and their servants that she is happy knowing that she is going to heaven, where such cruelty does not exist. St. Clare begins to confront therealization that he believes slavery is evil, and he promises Tom that he will give him freedom in the event of St. Clare’s death.Shortly after Eva dies, her father dies tragically in an accident, and Tom's fate is left entirely in the hands of Mrs. St. Clare. She decides to move back to her parents' estate and to sell all the slaves. Though she is asked to fulfill St. Clare's promise to give Tom his freedom, she refuses and Tom ends up in the hands of Simon Legree, an evil plantation owner. He forces his slaves to work hard and replaces them when they inevitably die just a few years later. On Legree's plantation, Tom meets two slaves: Emmeline and Cassy. Emmeline is a young mulatto woman sold to Legree at the same time as Tom, and she attempts to befriend the Cassy, who has suffered at the hands of Legree for several years. Legree soon comes to hate Tom after Tom refuses to beat and discipline the other slaves. Legree planned to turn Tom into an overseer, and when he realizes that Tom will not take it, he becomes angry and takes out his wrath on Tom. Tom becomes discouraged until he dreams of the heaven one night. So he decides it is his mission to suffer for the other slaves and he tries his best to help other slaves, which annoys Legree. And when Emmeline and Cassy escape, he demands that Tom tell him everything he knows. Tom admits that he knew their plans to escape and their whereabouts, but he refuses to disclose where they are. Legree beats Tom so severely that after a few days, he dies.Cassy and Emmeline eventually escape, and they happen to meet George Shelby, who is rooming next to a woman named Madame de Thoux. Through conversation, it is discovered that Eliza Harris is Cassy's daughter, and George Harris is Madame de Thoux's brother. Cassy and Madame de Thoux journey together to Canada, where they are reunited with their family. Madame de Thoux reveals that her husband has left her a large inheritance, and they all move to France together. The family then moves to Africa, and Cassy's long-lost son, who has been found, joins them finally and George Shelby gives all the servants on the Shelby farm their freedom, and tells them to be Christians and to think of Tom.Comments on the BookFrom this novel, I learned more about the American social situation before the Civil war, different opinions about the slavery, and people with different kinds of qualities.About the American social situation, I learned the plantation economy in southern part of the US in the 1950s, the slave’s living condition. About the different opinions about the slavery, I learned that some plantation owners who are pious Christian think trading slaves is wicked and doesn’t accord to the dogma, but they don’t oppose owning slaves and that others like slavers, conservative plantation owners regard slave as a kind of property or a tool to make money. About the people with different kinds of qualities, I learned the honesty of Uncle Tom, the braveness and brightness of George, the kindness of Eva, the cruelty of Legree. However, though the novel makes me learn a lot, what impress me most are different people’s pursuits of freedom and among these people pursuing freedom, the most typical people are Uncle Tom and George. The two persons and their completely different fates can reflect two opposite choices when people pursue freedom. In the novel Uncle Tom’s cabin, both Uncle Tom and George are keen on freedom. But when the two men faces the fact that they will be sold, Tom chooses to accept it and George chooses to escape. The two different ways imply two different choices to pursue freedom in essence and it’s the different choices that lead to the different results: Tom dies and George survives. From the results, we can learn clearly which choice is better and now I just want to analyze why they make different choices. The first reason, I think, is the different characters. Uncle Tom, as we know, is honest, kind, hard-working, tolerant and pious. He is loyal to his master and he believes if only he is honest and loyal to his master, he can get freedom from his master someday. But at last he fails and dies. George, a smart, ambitious and young man, doesn’t believe that plantation owners can give him freedom. He knows he must acquire freedom by himself. George is brave, confident and he has a spirit of adventure and revolution. Therefore, he gets freedom finally. The second reason, in my opinion, is the different experiences. Uncle Tom has a kind master: Mr. Shelby. On the Shelby plantation, he is well treated. He is loyal to his master and his master believes in him and promises that he will give Tom freedom. As a result, Tom believes it’s his honesty that helps him get freedom and he never intends to escape. However, George, the young man, has a bad master. He works hard but his master treats him badly and he is often abused by his master. As a result, he doesn’t believe his master can give himfreedom. So when he gets a chance to escape, he takes it without any hesitation. The third reason, as far as I am concerned, is the reorganization towards slave owner. Uncle Tom is a pious Christian and believes if only he does well, he will get a reward: freedom and he just needs to be patient because he has sin. So he pins his hope on slave owner who treat slaves as property, not human. George has suffered a lot from what the slave owner does. He doe sn’t count on his master to give him freedom. He thinks however slave owners treat slaves, slaves are just a kind of property and slaves can’t get true freedom. So he decides to pursue freedom by himself. The three reasons above, I think, can explain why Uncle Tom and George can make different choices and have different results. And after analyzing the reasons of the two men’s different choices, my opinion about pursuit of freedom is to fight for, not to wait for and that we should pin our hope to ourselves, not others.“Life is dear, love is dearer. Both can be given up for freedom.”On the way of pursuing freedom, waiting just means perdition. Fighting can bring a new lease of life. Both Chinese Revolution and American Revolution can prove that it’s right to fight for freedom. On the way of pursuing freedom, I prefer to be George rather than Uncle Tom.。

A Book Report On The Kite RunnerBy Wang Xiaorui,Class 26,No.2017210329 Do you want me to run that kite for you?-For you, a thousand times over. One week ago, I finished the book The Kite Runner. On seeing the sentence on the first page of the book, I dropped in deep thought wondering how great the emotion was in the story. During two months, every night before I went to bed, I was absorbed in the moving and sincere piece of the art. And I’d like to analyze The Kite Runner deeply from the theme of salvation. The meaning of the title is, on the surface, referring to Hassan, who chased the kite for the Amir’s youngest son. However, from my point of view, I think it probably refers to Amir. The kites that we are chasing all the time may symbolize integrity, courage, and loyalty. I believe the kite is the soul of the book. Although it only appears in two places of the novel, it contains a lot of images. The kite can be love, affection, and friendship. It can also be the symbol of the author's hope for the future. The attraction of the novel lies in that it jumps out of the relationship between people and society. The emotion between sons and fathers, people and the motherland deeply moved me.I was puzzled when I heard the strange title The kite runner for the first time. Did the kite need to be caught up? Why do you want to catch kites? After I read the book, I learn that this is a custom in Afghanistan. In the early spring, The Kite Festival will be held every year. Many children will spend all of their own savings for one year making their outstanding kites. There are colorful kites flying in the blue sky, and there will be a brave fighter at the end of time. You have to wipe out all the enemies around you, and you will become the victory. If you want to become the focus of attention and praise, you have to beat the kites everywhere you go. In my opinion, I think it's a communication or a game between children. But As for Amir, it was of great importance to him. Because this is the only way that he could get his father's praise and smile and not be disdained by others, he needed it urgently! It's also very important to catch up with other kites. When you snatched the last kite that has been shot down, it indicated great honor and the complete victory. Nevertheless , the source of all the sadness is here.To the world you are one person, but to the person who loves you, you are the world. Amir was Hassan’s world. Amir’s name had been the first word Hassan spoke. Hassan threatened brutal Assef for the sake of Amir. Hassan never failed to run the kite to please Amir. Hassan sacrificed himself for Amir’s house. These are more than a friend would do. Only those who loves you so much could challenge himself to do what Hassan did to Amir. To Hassan, Amir was not only a mere friend but a brother. He loved Amir more than anything else. Even after Amir betrayed him, he still told his son proudly “Agan Amir is my best friend”. Maybe for Hassan “for you, a thousand times over” has another meaning, which is not just kite runnin g for Amir but he will do anything for Amir."The Kite Runner" is the first novel of the American-Afghan writer Khaled Husse and the first English novel written by the writer. It was published in 2003 and was listed in the New York Times for two consecutive years. The best-selling book, with over 7 million copies sold in the United States and over 20 million copies sold in the worldwide, has been translated into 42 languages. The novel tells the story of two Afghan teenagers about friendship, affection, betrayal and redemption. The novel not only expresses the complaints about the war, but also has a profound reflection on the ethnic and religious issues in Afghanistan. This novel received wide acclaim in critic circles, but also caused great controversy in Afghanistan. From this book, I read about loyalty, dignity, love, strength, friendship, freedom, the meaning of happiness and responsibility. In this book, the protagonist Amir watched his servant Hassan bullied but did nothing in his childhood. In order to escape this sense of guilt, he chose to escape from Hassan and leave him alone. Why do we always think of the nearest person as an enemy and turn a blind eye to what really hurt us? It was obviously wrong. When you escape the sense of guilt, it also means losing the original purity and innocence. That's why we need to be redemptive, and even if the person can't hear your confess, we still need to face the things that hurt us. The story continued, and a few years later, Amir's father took Amir from the head of the city to the United States. They started their new life. Ali and his son Hassan remained to stay in Afghanistan. Later, Amir's father and Ali came to another place, the kingdom of heaven. Amir also has his family and his career, and Hassan has a life of ease. Many years later, a phone call recalled Amir to Afghanistan again. Perhaps it was due to his conscience, then Amir began to look for Hassan again. When looking for Hassan, Hassan unexpectedlydied, leaving only one year old child. When he came back, he took Hassan's child. The child was similar to Hassan but only a little. He did not smile, and the eyes had been so empty. It seemed that the child had been sad. I could not help sighing. Fortunately, Amir had a good wife and supported his decision. I thought, perhaps, Amir's sense of self-reproach would not be less. The story is not over yet. Later, he discovered a startling secret which makes Amir's guilt heart unable to forgive himself. Perhaps it is the secret that Hassan's only child has been taken good care of. But one thing is for sure. Neither Amir nor Hassan is wrong. They were all innocent and virtuous children. Because of race, they were pushed to the poles of the world. The world is always unfair. However, I never believe in the fate. I believe that I can change my destiny in the complicated world. I just want to say that in a betrayal world, friendship and family are extremely precious. We must lay down our burden and face all gains and losses calmly. Even if we will meet all kinds of challenges, we must face life strongly. This is what we should pursue, isn't it? Flowers may bloom or fade at all times, and too many beautiful moments are only in one or two seconds. We must treasure them. Just like Hassan, he didn't choose to complain about his life but to wait for his friend Amir. Even if he died, he didn't know the secret that he saved his child. But I think he would not regret doing everything for Amir. As the result, I think kindness and friendship are in the world forever. In addition, we should know that our fate is much better than that of Hassan. We live in a peace country. And we should think about others more. We can't reach the realm of Hassan. But Hassan's realm is what we pursue. In this book, every piece has reminded that life is not easy whoever you were. For me, after reading "The Kite Runner," I realized something that courage may not be invincible, and timidity will not help. A man should take his responsibility and go forward with courage and never give up. Do not believe in your fate, and pursue what you want. Do not be despairing, and do not give up easily. Everything is up to you.Actually, compared to Amir, Hassan was simple. He was loyal and kind. Whatever Amir did to him, he would forgive him. He finally died in order to protect the Amir’s house. He kept his promise with his life. “For you, times over!”After reading this book, I have a deeper understanding of responsibility. This book contains a lot——responsibility, honesty, friendship, forgiveness and so on. Everyone may make mistakes, but the most important thing is to have the courage totake responsibility for it. There were many times that we hurt others because of impulsive thoughts. And this book tells us the authoratoned for his crime after innumerable trials and hardships. We can feel his personality charm.Another shocking truth was that in fact, Hassan was the son of Baba - he stole Ali’s beautiful wife, committing the most unforgiving sin, theft - so Hassan was Amir’s brother! And Ali knew that. But he still kept silent, doing all the things for Amir and Baba. So did Hassan.Reading this, tears ran down my face. The strong power of love and faith expressed me and I felt I got refreshed. Maybe I can call it friendship - Hassan always regarded Amir as his friend so he could give up anything to help him.Another thing making this book a special one is the description of Afghanistan. From this book, I knew many things that I could not even imagine before. The chaos there in war time and the astonishing truth of the power controlled by evil people shocked me deeply. At the end, I believe that Amir had made the right choice. He faced the pain bravely and took his responsibility. In his world, he never chose to escape.Maybe everyone has a kite in mind, whatever it means, let us chase it bravely.。

Reading Report Sample: 800 Words inEnglishReading is an essential part of learning and personal growth. It is through reading that we gain knowledge, expand our vocabulary, and develop critical thinking skills. In this reading report, I will share my thoughts on the book “The Alchemist” by Paulo C oelho.“The Alchemist” is a novel that tells the story of Santiago, a shepherd boy who dreams of finding a treasure hidden in the Egyptian pyramids. Along the way, he meets a series of characters who teach him important life lessons and help him discover the true meaning of his journey. One of the themes that stood out to me in this book is the idea of following one’s dreams. Santiago’s journey is a metaphor for the journey of life, and his pursuit of the treasure represents our own pursuit of happiness and fulfillment. The book encourages readers to pursue their dreams, even if they seem impossible or impractical.Another theme that resonated with me is the importance of listening to one’s heart. Throughout the book, Santiago is guided by his intuition and his connection to the universe. He learns to trust his instincts and follow his heart, even when it leads him in unexpected directions. This message is a powerful reminder to stay true to ourselves and to trust our inner voice. The book also explores the concept of personal transformation. Santiago undergoes a profound transformation throughout his journey, both internally and externally. He learns to let go of his fears and doubts, and to embrace the unknown with courage and curiosity. This message is a reminder that change is possible, and that we have the power to transform ourselves and our lives. Overall, I found “The Alchemist” to be a thought-provoking and inspiring read. The book is beautifully written, with vivid descriptions and powerful imagery. It is a timeless story that speaks to the human experience and the universal quest for meaning and purpose. In conclusion, reading is a valuable tool for personal growth and development. It allows us to explore new ideas, expand our perspectives, and connec t with the world around us. “The Alchemist” is a book that embodies the power of reading, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for inspiration and guidance on their own journey of self-discovery.。

读书报告英语范文English: After reading the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, I was deeply moved by the powerful messages it conveyed. The story, set in the southern United States during the 1930s, tackles issues of racism, injustice, and moral growth. The character development of Scout Finch, the young protagonist, and her father, Atticus, is masterfully written and their unwavering moral compasses serve as a guiding light throughout the narrative. The novel effectively highlights the destructive nature of prejudice and the importance of empathy and understanding. Furthermore, the courtroom drama and the shocking verdict shed light on the flawed nature of the justice system, sparking crucial conversations about social inequality and the pervasive influence of societal norms. Overall, "To Kill a Mockingbird" has left a lasting impact on me, prompting me to reflect on the complexities of human nature and the importance of standing up for what is right.中文翻译:读完哈珀·李的《杀死一只知更鸟》,我对它传达的强大信息深感动容。

This novel was written by the distinguished French writer Alexandre Dumas Pere, the pioneer of the Romanticism Literature Movement in France. He was so popular that his works had been translated into several languages and welcomed by readers all over the world. This novel took 17th century Dutch bourgeois revolutionary period of intense political struggle and the turbulent life as its background. This gist of the story is as follows. The leading role Cornelius is a young doctor who completely doesn’t inquire about politics. He loves growing tulips and is trying to cultivate a black tulip without any other color on it at all. In order to obtain the considerable bonus offered by the government to the first man who cultivates the very kind of black tulip, Boxtel, Cornelius’neighbor, tries to destroy and steal the bulbs of Cornelius, even kill him. Fortunately, Cornelius in the prison gets acquainted with the prison-keeper’s daughter Rosa and they fall in love. Under Rosa’s help, Cornelius realized his dream and achieves happiness at last. It’s firmly believed by some people that when you become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow. After reading this novel, I believe that nothing is further from the truth. To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in yoursuccessful work, in your contribution towards others’happiness and in your wealth you have earned through your own honest efforts.Firstly, in order to obtain happiness, you should achieve your successful work, in order to achieve your successful work, you should go through thick and thin. As the writer said, “those who have suffered much, have a right to be happy.” Take the two leading characters for example. They eventually reach happiness after suffering a lot both psychologically and physiologically. Secondly, your happiness should live in your contribution towards others’happiness, but not on the contrary, in destroying others’ happiness. If you get your happiness by taking advantage of others or by hurting others, you won’t be happy with it for long, at least, you won’t enjoy the real happiness. People will think you’re a mean person. Boxtel was a typical case. He would never gain happiness.Thirdly, wealth obtained through dishonest means doesn’t bring happiness. Happiness is not an end, it is a process. It’s a continuous process of honest and productive work which makes a real contribution to others and makes you feel you are a useful and worthy person.英语读书报告篇二Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century. The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature ofgoodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.英语读书报告篇三The lousy driftage of strand of record 》I like to read the adventure novel specially, among them leaving for me impressive would be 《 the lousy driftage of strand of record 》。

H. Lawrence was born at Eastwood, Notts, on September 11, 1885, the fourth child of a miner who had been employed at Brinsley Colliery since he was 7 years old. In 1911, his first novel The White Peacock was published.Sons and Lovers is divided into two parts and is composed of 15 chapters altogether. The story, set in England, can be interpreted as an autobiographical novel of Lawrence. The hero of the book, Paul Morel, is the second son of a miner's family. His mother, Mrs. Morel, is a daughter of a mid-class family. Because of the differences in family background and education, a shadow is soon cast upon the married life of Mrs. Morel. And this shadow is darkened by Mr. Morel's laziness and alcoholism. By misfortune or bad luck, Mr. Morel has an accident and becomes a cripple, which changes him into a man of bad temper. As a result, the coupleshares less and less the things in common and is driven farther and farther apart from each other. Little by little, Mrs. Morel transports her attention and love to her children, especially her two sons, William and Paul. She encourages them to leave the small mining region for a big city to find opportunities for a better life. After the death of her first son, William, because of hard work and pneumonia, Mrs. Morel's divided attention and love is poured completely upon Paul. The mother's abnormal love robs Paul of his normal love for his girl friend.Sons and Lovers has always been claimed since its publication to be another version of Oedipus complex. But D. H. Lawrence is in no sense an imitator. Sons and Lovers is truly an autobiographical novel. It describes an ordinary life of a coal miner's family. The abnormal love from the mother deprives Paul of his independentpersonality and mental health. It is perhaps because of this true picture of life that the novel has won Lawrence everlasting reputation.11。

翻译读书报告姓名:孙微学号:2013812044On the Book “The Theory and Practice of Translation”1.Brief introduction of Eugene A. NidaEugene A. Nida was born on November 11, 1914 in Oklahoma and dead on August 25, 2011 in Madrid. He was a linguist who developed the dynamic-equivalence Bible-translation theory. Nida graduated from the University of California in 1936, Master’s degree from the University of Southern California in 1939. Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Michigan in 1943. And also in the same year, Nida began his career as a linguist with the American Bible Society (ABS). He was quickly promoted to Associate Secretary for Versions, then worked as Executive Secretary for Translations until his retirement. Nida was instrumental in engineering the joint effort between the Vatican and the United Bible Societies (UBS) to produce cross-denominational Bibles in translations across the globe. This work began in 1968 and was carried on in accordance with Nida's translation principle of Functional Equivalence.Eugene A.Nida is one of the most distinguished translation theorists in the west. He has achieved great success in this field. His translation theories has a huge influence on the translation studies not only in western countries, but also in eastern countries, especially in China. Nida has been to China for many times. His theories influenced many scholars in China. For instance FuLei. Nida is generally recognized as the most influential one among all the translation theorists.2.Introduction of Eugene A.Nida’s Translation Theories(1). The Nature of Translating And Some Basic Theories.Translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style. To understand the nature of translation we should know the basic theories of translation. The old focus and new focus. The older focus in translating was the form of the message, and translators took particular delight in being able to reproduce stylistic specialties. The new focus, however, has shifted from the form of the message to the response of the receptor. Therefore, what one must determine is the response of the receptor to the translated message. This response must be compared with the way in which the original receptors presumably reacted to the message when it was given in its original setting. Correctness must be determined by the extent to which the average reader for which a translation is intended will be likely to understand it correctly. The test of comprehensibility is concerned primarily with discovering and eliminating two different types of expressions:(1) those which are likely to be misunderstood(2) thoseso different and “heavy”as to discourage the reader from attempting to comprehend the content of the message. This means that we must get familiar with both the target language and the source language. And for a translator, he must pay more attention to the receptor’s language. The message is more important than the form for the reader to understand the translation. And the receptor’ response became a criterion to judge the quality of the translation. If we want to produce the closest natural equivalent of the source language message, we are required to understand the information above. Then we should change the attitudes to the receptor languages. And here Nida also explain the attitudes with respect to receptor languages and new attitudes concerning the source language.First to the receptor language, In order to produce texts which will approximate the goal of equivalent response, translators often need to change their view of the source languages, but it often requires quite a radical rethinking of one’s attitudes toward the receptor language. We must admit that each language has its own genius. This is to say, each language have certain distinctive characteristics which makes it special. For instance, our Chinese, have developed for five thousands years. Its beauty and glamour has made it be popular all over the world. In order to communicate effectively one must respect the genius of each language. If a person want to understand the beauty of our four Chinese classic works, he must respect and admit our language. Each language has its genius. Anything that can be said in one language can be said in another, unless the form is one essential element of the message. e.g. “white as snow”for some people do not know the snow ,they may change the form. Such as white as fungus. In fact, we certainly can not expect a perfect match between languages. If the form in which a message is expressed is an essential element of its significance, there is a very distinct limitation in communicating this signification from one language to another. It is hard to reproduce this type of meaning. In Chinese there is a saying goes that "You can't have your cake and eat it too" .(鱼和熊掌不可兼得) To preserve the content of the message the form must be changed. If all languages differ in form, then quite naturally the forms must be altered if one is to preserve the content. The extent to which the forms must be changed in order to preserve the meaning will depend on the linguistic and cultural distance between languages.Secondly, the new attitudes to the concerning the source language. Greek and Hebrew are just "languages” with all the excellences and liabilities that every language tends to have. To recognize their true worth and significance it is important to understand three essential theological implications about their use as vehicles of Biblical communication: The languages of the Bible are subject to the same limitations as any other natural language. The writers of the Biblical books expected to be understood. The translator must attempt to reproduce the meaning of a passage as understood by the writer. For Nida concentrated on the translation of the Bible, so he explain many theories by the examples of the Bible translations. And for the third point if this attitudes, not only must we avoid going behind the writer; we must also avoid going ahead of the writer in understanding his language. To understand the nature of language we should also be aware of the essentialelement. Such as .reproducing the message, equivalence rather than identity, natural equivalent, closest equivalent, the priority of meaning, the significance of style. Though style is secondary to content, it is nevertheless important. It is usually quite impossible to represent some of the stylistic subtleties of the original. In trying to reproduce the style of the original one must beware of producing something which is not functionally equivalent, and it is functional equivalent which is required, whether on the level of content or on the level of style. The style of the translation can give reader an unique impression and deep reflection. And we all know that the same words in different form may have different influence. There are a system of priorities. As a basis for judging what should be done in specific instances of translating, it is essential to establish certain fundamental sets of priorities: (1) contextual consistency has priority over verbal consistency. The choice of the right word in the receptor language to translate a word in the source-language text depends more on the context than upon a fixed system of verbal consistency (2) dynamic equivalence has priority over formal correspondence. We will introduce the dynamic equivalence in the following part.(3) the aural form of language has priority over the written form. As far as I am concern, language is used to communication, and the verbal form is pre-exist than the written form. So the aural form is more important than the written form.(4) forms that are used by and acceptable to the audience for which a translation is intended has priority over forms that may be traditionally more prestigious.(2). Dynamic equivalenceDynamic equivalence is to be defined in terms of the degree to which the receptors of the message in the receptor language respond to it in substantially the same manner as the receptors in the source language. In the past critical examination of a translation was usually carried out by examining the two messages and compared their formal and meaningful structures. Nida prefer dynamic equivalence to formal correspondence. The dynamic equivalence also known as functional equivalence. It attempts to convey the thought expressed in a source text. It includes four levels, lexical equivalence, sentence equivalence, passage equivalence, and style equivalence. The meaning of a word lies in its usage in language. Dynamic equivalence is reader-oriented. The relationship between receptor and message should be substantially the same as the original one. Considering the culture of the receptor language and focusing on the reader’s response. Adaptions of lexicon and grammar and cultural references are essential. In the dynamic equivalence, there are maximal equivalence and minimal equivalence. Maximal equivalence refers to that the reader of the translated text should understand appreciate the work as the original readers. The minimal equivalence means the receptor reader should comprehend the text to the degree of the original readers.Nida’s translation theory has been popular in the world. It also become an indispensable part of translation studies. From the introduction of the theories of Nidawe can conclude that he insist that translation should pay prior attention to the meaning of source language. And the translation should not just pay attention to the form of the text. Moreover Nida’ translation theory made a great breakthrough in the history. It has a great influence to the world.。
