描绘陆续抵达的客人在享用圣诞节大餐的人，故事很细腻的描写这些美味的料理火腿和卤牛肉、牛排、烤鹅、波特酒、雪莉酒与整个活动的细节，他们讨论皇家歌剧院表演的歌剧团，又唱诗歌。

主角贾柏瑞透过这场「爱尔兰盛宴」感伤著，人虽然还活著，其实精神上已经瘫痪了，不过是些活死人罢了。

他“听见雪花落在大地的微弱声响；悄然落下，彷佛进入最後的旅程，落在所有的生人与死者身上。

”一些批评家认为这篇故事，是要写犯下基督教七罪之一。

剧情故事分作两段情节发展，前半段故事开始于摩肯家三位小姐（Misses Morkan）所筹办年度圣诞节家庭聚会上，乔伊斯细腻地描写整个活动的细节，生动如女主人们张罗宴会的热忱、陆续抵达的客人们的彼此寒暄、以及言谈中的幽默与无伤大雅的相互调侃，仔细如席间餐点的摆设以及火腿、卤牛肉、牛排、烤鹅、波特酒、雪莉酒、葡萄干、杏仁果、蛋塔、布丁等等美味料理。

一如往昔，这场“爱尔兰盛宴”宾主尽欢，晚餐后，贾伯瑞（Gabriel Conroy）的演说内容，再三肯定爱尔兰人殷勤真切、热情多礼的好客传统。

后半段故事由众人一一告别摩肯家，一路演变成为贾伯瑞的内心独白，乔伊斯在此展演精采的意识流表现手法，描写贾伯瑞思绪的一连串变化。

道别之际，贾伯瑞仰望妻子葛瑞塔（Gretta Conroy）倚在楼梯的扶手上，凝神谛听客厅传来的歌声曲调，他想像妻子如同一幅美丽优雅的画作，发现她的脸颊泛红、眼眶里闪著亮光，贾伯瑞心中涌起一阵喜悦，感觉幸福与骄傲，返回旅店途上，他对妻子的身体欲求，在血管中热情洋溢地奔腾著。

The Northern United Statesindustrialized rather early and had little need for slave labor in theirsociety. The southern states, on the other hand, had an economybased on agriculture, particularly cotton. This caused a much higherdemand for slaves to supply manual labor in the fields. Eventuallythis fundamental difference economic structures led to a differencein ideology. And, as ideological differences often do, this led to aconflict which eventually resulted in war.
