Cultural diversity—exchange and progress
My dear friends, do you look forward to holidays and festivals? When you think about festivals, which one would you remember first? In the past, we have Western obsession with romantic and illusory festivals, such as Valentine's Day and Thanksgiving Day. But now, just like the Mid-Autumn day in September. I can clearly remember the scene that people queued out of store and bought meat-stuffed moon cake. The team was hundreds meters long, but the citizens were quite determined to eat the moon cake. Taro, duck turned out to be popular dishes in that days. It shows that the new National Holiday and Festivals Schedule announced by the state council is warmly welcomed and people return to become more passionate and expectant to Chinese traditional festivals.
Since the reform and opening policy, foreign culture has poured into China,so that people, especially the young seem to forget our own culture. Students talk about US TV series,white-collar love western brand, teenagers grow up with fast food and so on. Many people call on cultural integration and sure, it is inevitable around us. But judge from the history, there were big divergence between cultural integration. Especially when a country or a nation became powerful, they used the culture approved by them to uniform other nation through war or other coercion. And the weak were unwilling to accept and fight back desperately. The power nation tried to integrate for many times, but the consequence was always turned to diversity. For instance, Hitler tried to get Europe unified, but failed. Japan wanted to get Asian conquered, but failed. America wants to be the world’s overload, but 9.11 happened. The long history told us, the origin of human culture is multi-source. Never does the world have a simple culture and it will never be the same.
In fact, I don’t deny culture integration, but I consider it should be under cultural diversity. As long as people are different, there will be culture with diversity.
For thousands of years, Chinese culture, Egypt culture, Greek culture, India culture, Africa culture, Islamic culture are all the combination of our brilliant human history. It has shown far-reaching impact on the development of human beings. Cultural diversity is the source of nations’ vitality. Without it, we will lose the roots of our generation.
On the other hand, cultural diversity can avoid conflicts and make the world in harmony. China is a multi-ethnic country, every nation has made its unique culture. If you want to get all integrated, it is impossible and will have many wars. It is because Chinese’inclusiveness and cultural diversity which do not make the thing come true. The Chinese nation and the minority absorb cultural nutrition from each other and make 5000-year culture abundant and diverse. That’s why the Chinese civilization is the world’s only ancient civilization that has been developing for 5000 years without interruption.
Third, cultural diversity can make progress in human’s productivity and society. In the 15th century, China brought its silk cloth and goods, gunpowder, paper making and printing techniques to the west via Silk Road. This road, in return, introduced Buddhism and Islam as well as grapes, walnuts, cucumbers, glass, perfume and other products from the outside world. Nowadays, economic globalization is not only promoting country’s economy, but also creating a new chance of culture exchange. Through the process, human’s civilization will be elevated and accelerated.
These are the benefits of diversity. Of course,at the same time we should inherit our excellent Chinese culture as well as absorb the outstanding achievements of others. Then the culture worldwide will be promoted and will make human’s civilization a common progress.
Finally, my dear friends, if next time, someone ask you about festival, what will you remember first? I believe the answer will sure be a Chinese festival.
Thank you!。
