It’s totally natural to feel nervous. Also, it’s normal to make some mistakes. The examiners will not expect you to do the exam perfectly and they will get a good idea about your level of English even if you make some mistakes. If you make a mistake and you realize right away, then go back and say it again. We all d o this sometimes even when we are speaking our native(本土的)language. Also it’s normal to pause and think when you’re speaking in your own language and in a foreign language, so try not to worry about that. So, take a d eep breath before you start the exam and remember that these feelings are natural. B.A storybook.C.A language learning website. D.The CD player instructions.Language students often think they have memory probl ems. They worry because they can't remember words. In fact, the probl em usually isn't with their memory. The probl em is with how they study. To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and l ong-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into l ong-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it's organized. When you put away a book or memory you can't just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again. How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can d o this by writing new sentences that includ e it. Even better, you can invent a littl e story about the word, with peopl e or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is height, you can think of the tall est person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your l ong-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it. 33.In the writer's opinion, students can't remember words because ________.A.they have memory problems B.they are too worriedC.they don't use a proper way D.they d on't like to study34.Which is TRUE about memory according to the passage?A.Short-term memory is seld om used.B.What we see goes into l ong-term memory first.C.We will forget a word soon if it goes into short-term memory.D.We will never forget a word if it goes into l ong-term memory.35.The underlined(划线的)part in Paragraph 2 means l ong-tern memory ________. A.works like a well-organized libraryB.provides any book you wantC.leaves memory anywhereD.keeps many books like a large library36.This passage mainly tells us about ________.A.students' language probl ems in studyB.how to make the meaning of words strongerC.short-term and l ong-term memoryD.how to improve ways to remember wordsHomework is a probl em for students all over the world. As a student, you have a l ot of homework to do every day. It's a major part of a student's schooldays. It's the best way to review what you have l earned in class. And it helps you und erstand important concepts(概念).Luckily, there are several things you can do to make homework less diffiicult.Be sure you understand the homeworkWrite your homework d own in your notebook if you need to. Don't be afraid to ask questions about it. It's much easier to ask the teacher during or after class than to try to remember later that night!Use your time at schoolMany schools have study halls. It is d esigned to all ow stud ents to study on their own. It's more interesting to play with your friends. But the more homework you finish at school, the less you’ll have to d o that night.Take a breakIt's difficult to hold your attention for too l ong. So take some breaks while doing your homework. Siting for too long without relaxing will make you feel very tired. Half a minute? A few seconds? Googl e engineers have discovered that even 400 milliseconds―as short as the blink of an eye―is too l ong for most Internet users.A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. People hardly notice such a small time difference, but it does cause them to stop searching, reported The New York Times. “Without question, n obody likes to wait,” said Arvind Jain, a Google engineer. “Every millisecond matters.”Nowadays, millions of smart-phones and computers are continually gathering and sending out information. With so many peopl e d ownloading maps, sports vid eos, news andre staurant recommendations, you can get digital “traffic jams”. Meanwhile, users are expecting faster and faster service.Google found that if one website is 250 milliseconds sl ower than another website, then people will visit it l ess often. This is why technol ogy companies are now competing to be the fastest. Googl e said people d o expect different things from different websites because they realize not all l oading times are the same. For exampl e, a person will be more patient waiting for a video to load than for a search result.Even so, four out of five online users will click away if a video takes too l ong to l oad. This makes it difficult for vid eo websites to choose between the quality of pictures and fast l oadingtimes.Trying to get a higher speed has always been part of the history of the Internet. In the 1990s, when the Worl d Wid e Web first started to become popular, it was very crowded andsl ow; people call ed it the “Worl d Wide Wait”. But engineers managed to fight the problem with new inventions. They laid a lot of fiber optic cables (光缆)for sending in high speed; they improved software so it woul d work more smoothly; they placed computer servers all around the world to be nearer to users; all this increased speed.Nowadays we can enjoy much faster Internet. Famous search engines such as Google and Microsoft’s Bing usually find search results in less than asecond.____________________________________________________42.The report from The New York Times suggests thatA.A millisecond is one thousandth of a second.B.400 milliseconds is not so l ong for most Internet users.C.A millisecond has nothing to do with the Internet speed.D.A millisecond really makes a difference to the Internet users.43.The engineers did something to improve the speed, including _____.a. making software work more smoothlyb. laying a number of fiber optic cabl es insidec. placing computer servers throughout the worl dd. developing the quality of pictures on the InternetA.a b c B.b c d C.a c d D.a b d44.Which of the foll owing is true according to the passage?A.The quality of pictures comes first for video websites.B.Google is 250 milliseconds sl ower than other websitesC.Microsoft’s Bing is the fastest engine the world nowD.Peopl e are more likely to wait for l oading films than maps45.What d oes the underlined sentence mean?A.Internet users are willing to see more search engines set upB.Google and Microsoft’s Bing should help find the searching resultsC.These companies shoul d mind their steps, or they will break d own soon.D.These companies need to catch up with the devel oping needs of Internet users 46.What can be the best title of this passage?A.Don’t make me “www.wait”.B.Search engines work faster.C.Traffic jams keep us waiting.D.The WWW becomes popular.Green is an important col or in nature. Those figures are shockingly larger than previous assessments, which have shown 7 percent of mammals and 4 percent of birds were affected. Of the 873 mammal species looked at, 414 are hurt by climate change. For threatened birds, 298 of 1, 272 species are experiencing negative effects, according to the findings. However, a new study follows the analysis of threatened wildlife shows that the biggest threat to wildlife is not climate change, which gets a lot of attention, but human activities, including logging(伐木), hunting and farming. Today, three -quarters of Earth's land surface faces “human pressure”, according to a global analysis professor Watson carried out in August.“When it comes to the effects of human activities on wildlife,” Watson said, “most studies look at what might happen to a population in the future, perhaps 50 or 100 years down the line. The problem with such forecasts is that they are absolutely unhelpful for the here and now.”“Nature is extremely resilient(能复原的)if you give it a chance,” Watson said. “But the big thing is acting now, not in 20 to 50 years' time. Not make climate change and ‘human pressure’ a future threat, but take action now. Because everyday, every minute, which you delay, you lose those opportunities.”4.What has been found about the effects of climate change according to the passage?A.Human activities are suffering severe disaster due to the climate change.B.The species affected by climate change are more than people thought.C.More than half of the mammal species were affected by climate change.D.Three-quarters of Earth's land surface has been damaged by climate change.5.What does the underlined word “they” refer to?A.Human activities. Task I.
Yuan Longping is a famous scientist who considers himself a farmer. Born into a poor farmer’s family in 1930, he graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953. When he was young he saw hunger in the countryside and dreamed of huge rice plants that could feed more people. In 1974 he grew a super hybrid type of rice that could produce a third more rice than other types, which meant harvests could increase without making fields larger. In 1950 farmers in China could produce 50 million tons of rice now with his rice they can produce 200 million tons. He is not interested in money though and gives money to other researchers as he believes people with less money have fewer problems and dreams cost nothing. One of his dreams is to export his rice and feed people all over the world. (By Ray Cama)
