The 70-year-old currently has 15 bachelors or masters degrees from various universities across Italy, and is getting ready to get his 16th.Getting more than one college degree is not exactly unheard of, but 15 is apparently quite impressive, since it’s only b een done by one man. Although he spends his days working around his house and garden, like most people of his age; at night, Baretti turns into a student again. Every morning, at 3 a. m., when most of the world is sleeping, he wakes up and studies by the light of his desk lamp. He claims studying helps keep his mind active and that every degree he has obtained has helped broaden his knowledge of the world around him.“Thanks to books, I feel free. After all, the words share the same root,” he says, referrin g to the Italian words libro (book) and libero (free). He claims to have been inspired by the 19th century French essayist Louis-Francois Berlin, whose portrait(肖像) is also on display in his study, alongside his many framed university degrees, and whom he describes as “a man of culture and knowledge”.Baietti first made it into the Guinness Book of Records in 2002, after his eighth degree. Then he spent the next 15 years adding seven more bachelors and masters degrees to his collection. “Each time I set myself a new challenge to see how far my body and my brain can go.” At 70-years-old, Baietti thinks he has enough energy for at least one more degree, this time in food science.Probably the most important thing about Baietti’s achievement is that he managed to get most of his university degrees while working as headmaster of a secondary school, and volunteering with Italy’s Red Cross. The secret was always getting up at 3 in the morning to make sure that his thirst (渴求) for knowledge didn’t affect his profess ional activity and his family life. He spent 3 hours studying every day, and that was apparently all he needed to pass his exams and write his thesis.4. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Louis - Francois Berlin is on good terms with Baietti.B. Baietti is the first Italian to break a Guinness record twice.C. Nobody but Baietti has ever got more than one college degree.D. Challenging himself opens up a broader world to Baietti.5. The key to Baietti’s success is .A. the support from his familyB. his eagerness for fameC. his nonstop daily learningD. his unusual brain and energy7. What lesson can we learn from the story of Baietti?A. Well begun is half done.B. Never too late to learn.C. Take things as they come.D. Strike the iron while it is hot.CWe are lucky to live in a world that is full of incredible technology. Our living rooms are packed with computers, LCD TVs, video game systems, and Blue-ray players that help us enjoy the latest entertainment. Although these items bring us joy and convenience, they also create a lot of junk. Each device needs its own plug and adaptor to keep its batteries recharged, and over time these wires get tangled (缠绕在一起的). Thankfully, something has come along to help rid our homes of this mess while still supplying these devices with the power they need. It’s called wireless charging and this trend is just starting.Wireless charging has a lot of potential for smartphones and other electronic devices. Electronic devices can absorb the electricity once they’re placed on a special charging mat. There are several advantages that wireless charging offers over traditional methods. For starters, cords (电线) have a tendency to wear out with use. Wireless charging users never have to worry about buying replacement cords. Wireless charging is also far more convenient for medical implants, as patients won’t need to recharge their devices through the skin using cords. I n turn, this cuts down on the risks of infection. Wireless charging can also bring safety benefits, as wired charging devices that come in contact with water can increase the chances of getting an electric shock. Wireless charging gets rid of that danger completely.Still, there are a few drawbacks to wireless charging. The first is speed. It takes a bit longer to charge devices wirelessly than it does if the device is plugged in. The process also requires more heat, so devices tend to get a bit hotter, which could create other safety issues. Also, since devices must be left on a special pad while charging, it is harder to operate them while they are powering up. This limitation may be gotten rid of in the future, as researchers are developing transmitters (发射器) that can charge several different devices in a room without the need to connect to a charging pad. Although wireless-charging technology may be far from perfect, it seems like a step in the right direction as we move towards a less-tangled future.8. What is a problem with many modern appliances?A. Most people can’t afford to pay for them.B. They can cause a lot of junk around the house.C. They go out of style too quickly.D. They are not very entertaining.9. Why is wireless charging beneficial for medical patients?A. It often brings down the cost for their medical bills.B. Wireless charging has shown to cure people of serious diseases.C. It makes maintenance of their devices much easier.D. It’s being used as a replacement for many pills.10. Which of the following is a disadvantage of wireless charging?A. Wireless charging means devices take up more space.B. People can now buy fewer devices for their homes.C. It takes longer to charge your battery wirelessly.D. People can’t plug in their devices conveniently.11. What seem to be the author’s attitude towards wireless charging?A. Cautious.B. Uncaring.C. Disapproving.D. Favorable.DIn our life, there are two different types of dreamers,一low-recall dreamers and high-recall dreamers. According to researchers at the Lyon Nero-science Research Center in France, high-recall dreamers reported they remembered their dreams almost every day while low-recall dreamers said they only remembered their dreams once or twice a month, reported Live Science. Perrine Ruby,a lead scientist at the research center in Lyon, studied 41 people (21 high-recall dreamers and 20 low-recall dreamers) and recorded their brain activity. She found that a part of the brain called the temporo-parietal junction ( 颞顶叶交界处)was more active in high-recall dreamers. This was true both when they were sleeping and awake. This area of the brain is responsible for collecting and processing information from the outside world. This means that high-recall dreamers are more sensitive to what is happening around them. For example, when they are awake, they respond more strongly to hearing their own names. When they are sleeping, they tend to be woken up more easily by sounds and movements.By closely studying people’s brain activity, Ruby found that high-recall dreamers have twice as much “wakefulness time” during sleep as low-recall dreamers do. And it is during these short periods of wakefulness that the brain memorizes dreams. This is not hard to understand. Just try to think of your own sleeping experience. If you are restless during the night, you are more likely to remember your dreams, but if you sleep well and soundly, you tend to remember very little in the morning. This is because “you never get a chance to remember”, Robert Stickgold, a Harvard Medical School researcher, told The Washington Post. As another research project at the University of Turku in Finland showed, dream content canalso affect our memory. Negative dreams are easier to recall than ordinary dreams. Nightmares are often recalled because they are emotionally negative, and such dreams cause fear.12. What can we know about high-recall dreamers according to the article?A. They have very little brain activity when they sleep.B. They can remember their dreams clearly.C. They don’t know how to describe their dreams.D. They can’t remember their dreams.13. Which is true about low-recall dreamers compared to high-recall dreamers?A. They have higher quality sleep.B. They have more sleepless nightsC. They are more easily woken at night.D. They respond faster when hearing their names.14. What is the main purpose of the second to last paragraph?A. To explain Ruby’s findings.B. To attract readers, interest in future studies.C. To show the advantages of being a low-recall dreamer.D. To suggest what to do to become a low-recall dreamer.15. What did the research project in Finland find?A. Ordinary dreams can help our brain rest.B. Dreams are often affected by our emotions.C. Nightmares often happen when we don't sleep well.D. Negative dreams are more likely to be recalled.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

2019 学年高二英语上学期第一次阶段测试(10月)试题 新人教版
2020高二上学期第一次阶段测试英语试题一、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)ATraveling without a map in different countries, I find out about different “styles” of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because mo st streets there don’t have name signs; in Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”People in Los Angeles, the US, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure distance by time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You don’t understand completely, “Yes, but how many miles away is it, please?” To this question you won’t get an answer, because most probably they don’t know it themselves.People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language. Instead, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happens in the situation? A New Yorker m ight say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People there believe that “I don’t” is impolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan! However, one th ing will help you everywhere in the world. It’s body language.1. Which one of the followings is probably an example of Japanese directions?A. “Go south two miles. Turn west and then go another mile.”B. “Turn right at the hospital and go past a school. The library is right in front of you.”C. “The post office is about five minutes from here”D. “The post office is at Street Kamira.”2. People in Los Angeles don’t give directions in miles because _________.A. they use landmarks in their directions instead of distanceB. they prefer to lead you the wayC. they often have no idea of distance measured by milesD. they prefer to use body language3. Greeks give directions by __________.A. using street namesB. using landmarksC. leading people the wayD. giving people a wrong direction4. Where is Yucatan?A. In the USA.B. In Japan.C. In Greece.D. In Mexico.BHow much rain has fallen on the earth in the past? Man has not always kept weather records. Because scientists need a way to le arn about past rainfall, they study tree rings. A tree’s trunk grows bigger each year. Beneath its bark (树皮), a tree adds a layer of new wood each year it lives. If you look at a tree stump, you can see the layers. They are called annual rings (年轮) On some trees, all of the rings are he same width. But the ponderosa pines (松) that grow in the American southwest have rings of different width. The soil in the southwest is dry. The pines depended on rainfall for water. In a year of good rainfall, they form wide rings. In a dry year, they form narrow ones.Scientists do not have to cut down a pine to study its rings. With a special tool, they can remove a narrow piece of wood from the trunk without harming the tree. Then they look at the width of each ring to see how much rain fell in the year it formed. Some pines are hundreds of years old and have hundreds of rings. These rings form an annual record of past rainfall in the Southwest.5. The story does not say so, but it makes you think that_________.A. a tree grows faster when it has a lot of water.B. scientists cut down trees to study tree rings.C. pine trees form wide rings every year.D. the ponderosa pine grows in the Southwest6. A tree rows a new layer of wood__________.A. each weekB. whenever it rainsC. every yearD. every season7. On the whole, this story is about_________.A. why tree trunks grow bigger.B. why scientists study tree rings.C. trees that lived hundreds of years ago.D. the ponderosa pines in the American Southwest.8. Why did the scientists study the width of the tree rings?A. They want to know how big the tree will grow.B. Scientists want to move the pine trees.C. The trees depend on rainfall for water.D. The rings tell them how much rain has fallen.CTwo traveling angels (天使) stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied: “Things aren’t always what they seem.”The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable(好客的)farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had,the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their only income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was very angry and asked the older angel, “How could this happen?”“Why did you not watch out for the cow? The first man had everything, yet you watched over his house,” she accused(谴责). “The second family had little but was willing to sh are everything, and you did not help.”“Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the basement,I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so greedy and unwilling to share his good fortune,I asked God if I could seal(封口) the wall so he wouldn’t find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed,the angel of death came for his wife. I asked God if the angel could take the cow instead. Things aren’t always what they seem.”9.The underlined part “the pair” in the second paragraph two refers to__. .A. the poor coupleB. the rich coupleC. the guestsD. the angels10.The younger angel was very angry because___. .A. the older angel killed the farmer’s cowB. the older angel treated the poor family unfairlyC. the wealthy man gave them a bad place to liveD. the angel of death took the cow away11. Because she wanted to save the farmer’s wife.D. Because she was sympathetic to the rich.12. The story tries to tell the reader that___ .A. angels are always ready to help the poorB. sometimes things are not what they seemC. angels are always ready to help the richD. the young should always learn from the oldDLong March exhibitThe Shanghai History Museum is putting on an exhibition to mark the 60th anniversary of the Long March. AI miss you, Dad. I almost laugh out when I see you in myself, from the thinning hair on my head to the ways I respond to everyday things. It makes me realize that you are a part of me and will always be in my heart. It brings me a warm smile as I remember how you taught me about character, honesty, integrity(正直) ,and self-respect. You taught me to enjoy my work. You taught me to share, for only by giving something do I truly receive something. You taught me about love, as you loved all seven of us children so much. You set a good example to us by being at church each time the door was open. I was watching you as you led our family in prayer(祈祷)each night before going to bed. Through you Dad, I learned what is truly important in life. I now know that you continue to live with me and I hope I have passed the valuable traits down to my kids. You lost your father when you were only two years old. Your mother fell ill when you were 13 years old. You knew that dropping out of middle school and helping provide for your mother were necessary. So you did three jobs a day to support your mother and after you got married you worked even harder to support your family. So, parents ,especially fathers, remember that you do make a difference by what you teach your children. You can make a difference to the world.Children, now is the right time to express your love and thanks to your dads for what they do for you. A big hug, a warm thank-you, and living a life of purpose will give them more joy than you can imagine.1.What makes the author laugh out loud is that ______.A. his dad stays with him most of the time.B. he is like his dad in appearance and behavior.C. The other test is called the ACT. More than 2 million students take the SAT yearly, including about 100,000 foreign students. The organization of the SAT will change the entrance test in 2016. The College Board announced that the new SAT will no longer test students on rarely used words. But it will include passages from American historical documents or from writings on freedom and human rights. The College Board says words on the new test will be related to usage. Students will be asked to tell the meaning of words according to the context of the reading passages. Nigerian student Peace Umoru is in her first year at Howard University. She says the rarely used words are the hardest part for international students. The new test will be easier because of the reform(改革).Eddie West is with the College Board. He says the new test will better predict a student’s performance in college. The changes are moving the test in a positive direction. The new SAT pays more attention to skills and abilities that students need to succeed.
AIt seems that the Englishmen just cannot live without sports of some kind. A famous French humourist once said that this is because the English insist on behaving like children all their lives. Wherever you go in this country, you will see both children and grown-ups knocking a ball about with a stick or something, as if in Britain men shall always remain boys and women girls! Still, it can never be bad to get exercise, can it?Taking all amateur (业余) and professional sports in Britain into consideration, there can be no doubt that football is at the top of the list. It is called soccer in the United States. The game originated (起源) in Britain and was played in the Middle Ages or even ear lier, though as an organized game, or "association football", it dates only from the beginning of the 19th century. The nex t is rugby, which is called "football" in the United States. It is a kind of football played by two teams of fifteen players than eleven. In rugby, an oval-shaped ball is used which can be handled as well as kicked. It is a pretty rough game.In summer, cricket is the most popular sport. In fact, it has sometimes been called the English national game. Most foreigners find the game rather slow or even boring, but it enjoys great popularity among the British.Tennis rates high on the list, too. It was introduced into England from France in the 15th century, but it was from England that it spread to practically every country in the world.Table tennis, or "ping-pong", surely is not played on a great scale as it is in China or Japan. Basketball and volleyball were introduced into Britain during the late 19th century from America and are gaining popularity. Horse-back riding, swimming, rowing and golf all attract a lot of people.1.The main purpose of Paragraph 1 is to tell us that the English _______.A.are all sports lovers B.behave like childrenC.like to kick a ball around D.can remain young all their lives2. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true about football and rugby?A.They differ in the shape of the ball.B.They are played by different numbers of players.C.They both can be handled.D.They both can be kicked.3. The game that was never played in Britain until the late 19th century is _________. A.basketball B.tennis C.rugby D.FootballBWell, it’s time for Words and Their Stories. We present more expressions about food from Elenir Scardueli, a listener in Brazil. My mother believes you are what you eat. Then she’d always give us nutritious fo od. She likes serving us meat and potatoes, which can also mean the most important part of something. Here’s another expression about meat: one man’s meat is another man’s poison—one might like something very much while another person might hate it.My father’s a good and honest person. People say he’s the salt of the earth. He’d never pour salt on a wound,or make someone feel worse about something. However, sometimes he tells us a story that seems bigger than life. So we have to take it with a grain of salt.My husband makes enough money to support our family. So we say he brings home the bacon. He can cut the mustard(芥末), or do what is expected of him at work. Besides, he stands almost two meters tall, so it’s easy to find my husband in a crowd. He is a tall drink of water.I take the train to work. It is not a pleasant ride because the train is so crowded that we are packed like sardines(沙丁鱼).When we fail to see problems at work, my boss tells us to wake up and smell the coffee. We need to pay more attention and fix the problem.I once made a big mistake at the office and felt foolish. I had egg on my face.Over the weekend, my friend invited me to watch a football game on television. But I do not like football. It is not my cup of tea.We hope this has given you food for thought and stay with us next time. Thank you.4. The passage is mainly about _______.A. some idioms about foodB. words created by mumC. words and their storiesD. phrases in the kitchen5. The underlined phrase “you are what you eat”suggests that ______.A. eating plays an important partB. meat and potatoes are basicsC. rich nutrition holds the key of a mealD. a good diet is important for good health6. When you doubt something, you might ______.A. wake up and smell the coffeeB. take it with a grain of saltC. bring home the baconD. have egg on your face7. The passage is probably taken from a(n) ______.A. public lectureB. TV showC. radio programmeD. personal statementCThe wallet is heading for extinction. As a day-to-day essential, it will die off with the generation who read print newspapers. The kind of shopping, where you hand over notes and count out change in return, now happens only in the most minor of our retailers (零售商), like buying a bar of chocolate or a pint of milk from a corner shop. At the shops where you spend any real money, that money is increasinglyabstracted. And this is more and more true, the higher up the scale you go. At the most cutting edge(前沿的) retail stores--Victoria Beckham on Dover S treet, for instance, you don’t go and stand at any kind of cash register when you decide to pay. The staff are equipped with iPads to take your payment while you relax on a sofa.Across society, the abstraction of the idea of cash makes me uneasy. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned. But earning money isn’t quick or easy for most of us. Isn’t it a bit weird(奇怪的) that spending it should happen in half a blink(眨眼睛) of an eye? Doesn’t a wallet, that time-honored Friday-night feeling of pleasing, promising fatness, represent something that matters? But I’ll leave the economics to the experts. What bothers me about the death of the wallet is the change it represents in our physical environment. Everything about the look and feel of a wallet, the way the materi als wear and tear and loosen with age, the plastic and paper and gold and silver, and handwritten phone numbers and printed cinema tickets, is the very opposite of what our world is becoming. The opposite of a wallet is a smartphone or an iPad. The rounded edges, cool glass, smooth and unknowable as a pebble(卵石). Instead of digging through pieces of paper and peering into corners, we move our fingers left and right. No more counting out coins. Show your wallet, if you still have one. It may not be here much longer.8.What is happening to the wallet?A.It is disappearing.B.It is becoming costly.C.It is being fattened.D.It is changing in style.9. How are businesses done in big modern stores?A.Individually.B.In the abstract.C.Electronically.D.Via a cash register.10. What makes the author feel uncomfortable nowadays?A.Saving money is becoming a thing of the past.B.The pleasing Friday-night feeling is fading.C.Earning money is getting more difficult.D.Spending money is so fast and easy.11. What can we infer from the passage about the author?A.He is resistant to social changes.B.He is against technological progress.C.He feels reluctant to part with the traditional wallet.D.He feels insecure in the ever-changing modern world.DZero gravity looks cool. But what about the thing no one likes to talk about? Yes, that is right: going to the bathroom. Zero gravity makes this everyday task quite a challenge. Astronauts have to be toilet-trained all over again. The Apollo astronauts raised themselves off the seat of their chairs and stuck a clear plastic bag to their back sides with sticky strips. A second astronaut watched closely to be sure no waste matter escaped the seal. (You would not want that stuff floating around the cabin!) When the deed was done, the astronaut cleaned up with a piece of plastic attached to the inside of the bag, removed the bag, dropped adisinfectant(消毒剂) pill in with the waste matter, and put the whole thing, sealed, into a special container.Donald W. Rethke, an engineer for Hamilton Standard Space Systems, developed a more private way to answer nature’s call: the space toilet. It is somewhat like the kind of toilet one would find on commercial airplanes--with unique adaptations for zero gravity, of course. For instance, it has thigh bars that keep the astronaut from floating off the seat. The astronaut (male or female) defecates (排便) in a bag and urinates (排尿) in a hose. Solid and liquid wastes are kept separated because at least 85% of the urine is recycled and, yes, after careful filtration(过滤), used for drinking and other purposes. (Water is always in demand in space.) A vacuum sucks the waste materials into the toilet, where the waste is compacted into hamburger-like patties for easy storage. Although not exactly like an earthbound visit to the toilet, it is at the very least much more private than in the early days of space travel.12. According to the first paragraph, the lack of the gravity can turn something as simple as _______ into a major challenge.A. eatingB. answering nature’s callC. sleepingD.going to the restroom13. How did astronauts use toilet systems in the Apollo days?A. None of the waste was separated as it is now.B. Solid waste was compressed and stored on board.C. The toilet units used water to remove the waste through the system.D. The astronauts each used their own private restroom.14. To ensure the user remains seated, the toilet comes equipped with _______A. a plastic bagB. a sticky stripC. a wide hoseD. a thigh bar15. What can be inferred from the fact that most of the astronauts’urine is recycled?A. The recycled water tastes better.B. Water is limited on the space shuttle.C. It is very convenient to get their urine recycled.D. Space science includes recycling urine.第二节(共5小题每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

This continued until one morning, after a week of sleeping in his car, he walked nervously into a restaurant and ordered a big breakfast. After eating his first good meal in weeks, he found himself lying to the waiter, telling him he had lost his wallet. The waiter, who was also the owner, walked behind the chair where the young man had been sitting. He bent down, and came up with a $20 bill that looked as if it had fallen on the floor and said, “Son, you must have dropped this,” the owner said. The young man couldn’t believe his luck! I’ve just had a baby and I can’t keep my mini pig.”Being fond of animals, I knew I wanted the pig. I just had to figure out how to make it happen. I lived in a two-bedroom single-level house in Georgetow n, Ontario. It’s tough to brin g a pig back to the house I share with two dogs, two cats, and my lifelong partner. But I was not letting that pig go. So I told Laura I’d take the animal. When I got home with the pig, I hid her in the bedroom, and began to prepare a dinner for Alisha —her favourite bacon cheeseburgers. It’s better to make her happy before introducing the new member to her. When I led her to the bedroom and showed her the surprise, Alisha stood in the doorway like a statue. It took her a few seconds to know what I had done. She complained about my unreasonable action. She insistedthere was no more room in the house.I knew I was wrong, but I hoped I could smooth things over. Soon enough, the lovely pig did the smoothing for me. Never had we felt such joy as she brought to us. We got her a name “Esther”.Esther’s arrival changed our lives. A few weeks later, we decided to stop eating bacon. An Abandoned Pig Finding a Warm HomeC. A Little Pig Bringing Happiness to a FamilyD. A Lovely Pig Removing a Couple’s DisagreementDAccording to a recent study, a new genetically modified (转基因)rice can prevent infections of HIV, the virus responsible for the disease AIDS.The study reports the newly-developed rice produces proteins that attach directly to the HIV virus. This process prevents the virus from mixing with human cells. The scientists say it can remove the effect of the virus and block its spreading. The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS reports that worldwide, nearly 37 million people wereliving with HIV in 2017. The organization says the largest numbers of those are in developing countries. Nearly two-thirds of HIV cases are in Africa. Now there is no cure for HIV/AIDS though there have been developments in oral drug treatments to slow the progression of the disease. The new study predicts the rice-based method will lead to long-term use of the anti-HIV treatment across the developing world. Researchers said the “groundbreaking” discovery is “r ealistically the only way” that anti-HIV combination treatments can be produced at a cost low enough for the developing world. They say the easiest and most cost-effective way to use the rice will be to make it into a cream to be put on the skin. The HIV-fighting proteins can then enter the body through the skin. People all over the world could grow the rice and make the cream themselves. This would prevent the cost and travel required for many patients to receive treatments and medicine. The process of changing the genetic structure of food crops has been debated for some time. Critics (批评家) of genetically engineered crops believe they can harm people. The scientific team says further testing is needed to ensure that the genetic engineering process does not produce any additional chemicals that could be dangerous to people.12. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?A. Introduce HIV to the public.B. Provide some data about HIV.C. Remind readers of HIV prevention.D. Stress the urgency of HIV treatments.13. I want to tell my parents where I’m going, but what if I ask and they say“no”? I’ll end up wishing I never mentioned it and just went ahead and did it anyway. If you want permission, it’s best to build a track record of honesty and trust. L etting a parent know where you’re going is always a good idea. You may worry that telling your parents puts you at risk of getting “no” for an answer. But there’s a good chance your parents might be OK with you going. If you go but don’t tell them, you risk losing something more important —your parents’ trust.Parents who find out their kids did something behind their backs may be less likely to give permission to do things in the future. When trust is broken like this, parents wonder if teens are trying to hide something — and what they imagine can be far worse than the reality. Before you talk to your parents about the game, think about which approach will help them feel most comfortable with giving you more freedom. Maybe they’d like to meet the person driving or talk to friends who have driven with her in the past. If your parents have questions or hesitate about letting you go, find out what their worries are and then do your best to answer them.4. From Paragraph 1 we know that the writer _________.A. appears nervousB. looks worriedC. feels confusedD. seems discouraged5. What is the best way to get parents’ permission according to the passage?A. To get more attention from them.B. To risk gaining their permission.C. To keep off the track of reality.D. How to get freedom from parents.7. Who do you think the passage is intended for?A. Parents.B. Friends.C. Drivers.D. Teenagers.CCareer success could be predicted as early as kindergarten, according to a 20-year study recently published in the American Journal of Public Health.Researchers from Pennsylvania State University and Duke University tracked more than 700 children from across the US between kindergarten and age 25 and found a significant correlation(相关性)between their social skills as kindergartners and their success as adults two decades later. In 1991, teachers assessed how the kindergartners interacted with each other socially using a range of criteria like whether they cooperate with their peers without prompting(激励), if they're helpful to others, whether they're good at understanding feelings, and if they can solve problemson their own.Researchers then kept track of whether the students went on to graduate high school on time, get a college degree, and find and keep a full-time job by 25. They also monitored the participants' involvement with crime, drug abuse, public assistance, and mental health issues. The results showed that socially competent children were far more likely to earn a college degree and have a full-time job by 25 than those with limited social skills. Those with limited social skills also had a higher chance of getting arrested, binge(放纵) drinking, and applying for public housing.“This study shows that helping children develop social and emotional skills is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for a healthy future," said Kristin Schubert, program director at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which funded the research, in a release.“From an early age, these skills can determine whether a child goes to college or prison, and whether they end up employed or addicted." The good news, according to Damon Jones, lead author of the study, is that intervention(干预)at a young age can help improve social and emotional skills. “This research by itself doesn't prove that higher social competence can lead to better outcomes later on," he said. “But when combined with other research, it is clear that helping children develop these skills increases their chances of success in school, work, and life."8. What has the 20-year study found?A. Most kindergartners can solve problems alone.B. Helpful children understand others feeling better.C. Outgoing children cooperate with their peers easily.D. Social skills play a key role in children's development.9. Paragraph 3 and 4 are mainly about?A. when the researchers began their studyB. how long it took to complete the studyC. how the researchers conducted the studyD. what factors were studied by the experts10.What should parents do to help their children to succeed according to Kristin Schubert?A. Teach them how to cooperate with others.B. Teach them some basic living skills.C. Tell them to keep off alcohol.D. Coach them in their lessons.11. The text makes very good sense to ____________.A. teenagersB. educatorsC. doctorsD. general readersDWhat about your performance at today’s class? Are you active enough to focus on the lessons? Nowadays it is common to see students’ laziness and poor efficiency at class. And that is why schools across the world are trying to come up with solutions to keep students active. Some are replacing traditional classroom chairs with exercise balls or standing desks. At Ward Elementary School in Winston, North Carolina students have adopted a new program that requires riding fixed bikes while reading.‘Read and Ride’ is the creation of school counselor Scott Ertl, who came up with the idea while he was exercising and reading at the gym. Believing it would be a fun way to convince students to become more active, he placed one in the corner of his classroom and encouraged them to use it during independent reading classes. It was so popular that Ertl decided to add more bikes and offer the Read and Ride program to the entire school. Today Ward Elementary has a dedicated exercise room filled with bikes that can be used by students while completing their daily reading assignments.Besides making reading more fun, the program also helps students exercise at a comfortable pace without the pressure that comes with regular sports-related activities. It is also a perfect way to release energy during days when the weather is not helpful to outdoor activities. What is more important, however, are the program’s academic benefits. A year after Read and Ride was introduced at Ward Elementary School, students actively involved in the program demonstrated anastonishing83% reading proficiency. Those who had not taken advantage of the exercise bikes tested at a much lower, 41%.Of course there are many other programs which have got good results as ‘Read and Ride’. Though the substantial improvement in academic achievement cannot all be attributed to programs like ‘Read and Ride,’experts believe they are a significant contributor. That’s because studies have shown that physical activity stimulates(刺激)brain cells and helps prepare it for learning. So don’t be surprised to find more schools across the country will adopt “Read and Ride” for their students.12. What is the new program at Ward Elementary School?A. Kids excise balls in the classroom.B. Kids ride bikes when they are reading.C. Kids attend reading classes at the gym.D. Kids stand on the desks while reading.13. How do the students at Ward Elementary School benefit from the program?A. They exercise with high pressure.B. They become more active in sports.C. They feel reading fun and learn better.D. They become more independent in reading.14. Which of the following is the closest in the meaning to the underlined phrase in the last paragraph?A. be due toB. be occupied withC. be devoted toD. be addicted to15. What is the author's attitude towards this program?A. Neutral.B. Negative.C. Doubtful.D. Positive.II 阅读填空(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

ARecently Lonely Planet makes up the ten Asian tourist attractions, Shanghai also in the list of magic area.1. Hokkaido, JapanThough known primarily to the outside world for its ski resorts and powdery snow, Hokkaido's year-round beauty might soon b ecome a more familiar sight to foreign visitors. The new bullet-train service from Tokyo should help.2. Shanghai, ChinaThe enormous metropolis of Shanghai -- China's most populous city -- has an historic urban core which sits alongside its status as a contemporary, global financial hub.3. Jeonju, South KoreaHundreds of traditional Korean houses remain in central Jeonju's Hanok village.4. Con Dao Islands, VietnamOnce the site of the infamous Con Dao prison, Vietnam's isolated archipelago of 16 islands known as the Con Dao Islands is starting to become known for its scenery and fresh seafood.5. Hong Kong, ChinaA junk boat set against the famous skyline might be the iconic shot of Hong Kong, but Lonely Planet picked the territory for its natural heritage miles away from Victoria Harbor.6.Ipoh, MalaysiaAround 200 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur, the former British colonial city is now a foodie destination, where local street food and boutique cafes abound. What’s more, Taiwan is also included in this book. The footbridge which connects small, uninhabited Sanxiantai Island to Taitung is celebrated for its eight looping arches. This coastal county is in Lonely Planet's list of top destinations in Asia to visit in 2016.1. If you want to see beautiful sightseeing by train, you’d better go to______.A. Shanghai, ChinaB. Hokkaido, JapanC. Jeonju, South KoreaD. Ipoh, Malaysia2. We can infer that Lonely Planet is the largest_______ book publisher in the world.A. scienceB. expedition and adventureC. travel guideD.nature3. There are _____ places in China in Lonely Planet's list of top destinations in Asia to v isit in 2016.A. 2B. 3C. 4D. 5BI have been watching my daughters play sports since they were four, and have been shocked at howsome parents in the crowd behave. At soccer games, when my girls were very young, parents would be screaming at their children to get their heads into the game, to charge, to “get” an opposing player, or to “kill it.” I understand parents want to encourage their children and their team—but at some point it becomes too much.My daughter Grace is a high school and AAU (Association of American Universities) basketball player and a very good one at that. During a recent game, a parent sitting near me was shouting loudly to her daughter, standing up, expressing displeasure about the way her team was playing and, during halftime, speaking loudly about her personal life. After having her in my ear for more than half of the game, I was so put off that I had to move.Admittedly, I am the quiet parent at games. I clap for the schoolgirls when they make wonderful plays. For the most part, however, I remain silent. Shouting out makes them nervous.I asked Grace to weigh in on this, and she tells me: “Some parents become extremely emotionally invested in sports games, which can become a problem for the players. The worst thing is when people point out that ‘crazy parent,’ and they don’t know that’s your parent.”I am all for parent spectators (观众)cheering on their children and the rest of the team. But I hope you can cheer your children on in a positive way. Shouting things like, “Where’s your head?” “Go after her!” is not, in my view, the w ay to cheer on high school students or younger children. If you have nothing positive to say, hold your tongue. If you find yourself struggling to keep it together, get some fresh air during halftime.4. Unable to stand the mother nearby, the author .A. told her to shut upB. found another seatC. asked Grace for helpD. refused to talk to her5. In Grace’s opinion, crazy parents in the audience will make players feel.A. helplessB. impatientC. frightenedD. ashamed6. The author is against parent spectators .A. keeping silent all the timeB. saying unpleasant wordsC. cheering on the playersD. leaving during halftimeCA lot of us enjoy doing it: you turn on the camera on your mobile phone and hold it at a high position, making your eyes look bigger and your cheekbones more marked out. You turn to your best side and click. There it is --- your selfie.Over the past year, “selfie” has become a well-known term across the globe. This August the Oxford dictionary added the word to their online dictionary and defined it as: “A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smart phone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.”Today it’s not difficult to find social networking pages full of photos people have taken of themselves and their friends. And selfie culture has become especially related to young people. As many as 91 percent of teenagers have posted photos of themselves online, according to a recent survey by the US Pew Research Center. So what are the reasons for the rise of selfie culture?“The craze of the selfie celebrates regular people,” Pamela Rutledge, a professor at theMassachusetts School of Professional Psychology, told Vogue magazine ,“There ar e many more photographs available now of real people than models.”Posting selfi es also allows you to control your image online. “I like having the power to choose how I look, even if I’m making a funny face,” Samanth a Barks, 19, a high school student in the US, told Vogue. In addition, selfies “allow for a close friendship for long-distance friends, because you can see each other’s faces every day”, wrote Casey Miller at The Huffington Post. But US psychologist Jill Weber is concerned that selfies might lead to social problems. “There’s a danger that your self-esteem (自尊心)may start to be tied to the comments and ‘likes’ you get when you post a selfie, and they aren’t based on who you are ---they’re based on w hat you look like,” Weber told Vogue. “When you get nothing or a negative response, your confidence can plummet.”7. The first paragraph is intended to _________.A. introduce the topic of selfieB. describe how to enjoy selfieC. show the importance of selfieD. explain why selfie is popular8. How many reasons for the rise of selfie culture are mentioned in the passage?A. OneB. TwoC. ThreeD. Four9. What is Jill Weber’s opinion about selfies?A. Comments on selfie are based on who you are.B. Others’ response to selfies might affect one’s self-esteem.C. Selfies have more disadvantages than advantages.D. Selfies shouldn’t be encouraged for they lead to social problems.10. The underlined word “plummet” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to __________.A. put upB. calm downC. pick upD. go downDIt is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people g et jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people. Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and maths need not be taught in detail(详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and take an interest in the world.I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.11. People with little education usually .A. spend a long time in schoolB. have a good chance to get a jobC. spend the best years to choose jobsD. have fewer chances to get a good job12. The earliest education was p robably to .A. make a man lead a better lifeB. teach a man to write and readC. make people get a way of livingD. teach people to read good books13.The underlined word “well-rounded” in the passage means ““in Chinese.A. 圆满的B. 崭新的 C.公平的 D. 全面的14. It is expected that educated people will be able to .A. accept education as a way of livingB. take an interest in the whole worldC. develop their abilities to make playsD. learn subjects like language and math15. APeople around the world have their own ways of celebrating weddings. Now let’s compare Eastern and Western weddings.Chinese and Indian brides normally wear red dresses and most of the wedding decorations are of the same color. This is because the color red is said to bring good fortune. In many Eastern weddings, especially Chinese weddings, the bride will change into a different dress after the ceremony. White dresses only arrived in modern times because of the influence of Western wedding dress designs.Western wedding dresses are different. brides usually wear a wedding dress that is white in color and wear it throughout the whole wedding. Wearing white wedding dresses is said to have started in the 1840s, beginning with Queen Victoria, Queen of Great Britain. There are occasions when brides dress into more comfortable clothing so that they will be able to move more freely during the wedding reception. Traditional practices are strictly followed for most Western weddings. The couple follow up with any plans they have agreed and decided on to make their special wedding day unique and memorable. Wedding receptions and other celebrations differ among the East and West, but the concept is still the same. They are held to show gratitude towards family members, friends and guests for being a part of the wedding ceremony.Another mutual (共同的) custom that weddings of the East and the West have is the wearing of the wedding veil(面纱). According to superstitious(迷信的) beliefs, the bride wears a veil to protect her from being seen by evil spirits(邪灵) and the bridesmaids are decoys(诱饵).This is still followed even today.21. But how do you decide what is newsworthy?ConflictIf you look closely at the stories that make news in any given day, chances are that most of them will have some element of conflict. Conflict is newsworthy because as human beings we’re naturally interested in conflict. Think of any book you’ve ever read or movie you’ve ever watched—they all had some type of conflict. Without conflict, there would be no literature or drama.Loss of LifeThere’s an old saying in the news business: If it bleeds, it leads. It means any story involving loss of human life will be newsworthy. Many stories have both losses of life and property destruction, say, a house fire. Obviously loss of human life is more important than property destruction, so write the story that way.Proximity (亲近)Proximity has to do with how close an event is geographically to your readers or viewers. A house fire with several people injured might be big news in your hometown newspaper, but maybe no one will care in the next town.TimelinessWe tend to focus on what’s happening this day, this hour and this minute. So events that are happening now are often more newsworthy than those that happened, say, a week ago. Another factor that relates to timeliness is currency. This involves stories that may not have just happened but instead have an ongoing interest to your audience.NoveltyHappenings different from the normal, expected course of events is something novel, and thus newsworthy. Not only is it necessary to know how to choose what to write, but it is also important to have a good knowledge of skills of writing a good news article.25. The Luxor Resort’s Tender Steak Restaurant will satisfy even the pickiest guest.Today the public has become more health-conscious, seeking organic meat and food. It is good to know that Tender’s head chef Christopher Mahoney is leading the way in the “small farm”concept. Christopher Mahoney proudly said, “Tender has been competing with top chefs around Las Vegas for five and a half years and was named one of the top 10 steakhouses more than once. Our credibility(信誉) depends on using fine ingredients from the best farms in the United States and around the world in order to make a big difference.”A perfect steak depends on many factors. When I looked at Tender’s menu, I was amazed to see the wide variety of their selections. Tender not only offers rib-eye-steaks(里脊牛排), but also four different cuts of rib-eye-steaks from farms in other countries.Christopher continued, “These farms are raising the cattle in a healthy manner on a proper diet. That is the best way to go for me personally and that is the reason why I like our farms. The chef has to know exactly what he is getting in order to be a better judge of the food.“If you see a dish you want, but only want to try a little bit, just say, ‘Can I have this?’ No problem. We make sure the person who comes to Tender has the best time they could possibly have.”Dining at Tender is an experience to remember. I especially love the natural shrimps and prawns(对虾) served in an individual pan accompanied by three dipping sauces--mango salsa, pesto, and cocktail sauce. This is a great sharing plate because the prawns are rather large.29.
