Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (15 minutes) Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1.For questions 1-7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).For questions 8-10, complete the sen tences with the information given in the passage.Minority ReportAmerican universities are accepting more minorities than ever.Graduating them is another matter.Barry Mills, the president of Bowdoin College, was justifiably proud of Bowdoin's efforts torecruit minority students.Since 2023 the small, elite liberal arts school in Brunswick, Maine, has boosted the proportion of so-called under-represented minority students in entering freshman classes from 8% to 13%."It is our responsibility to reach out and attract students to come to our kinds of places," he told a NEWSWEEK reporter. But Bowdoin has not done quite as well when it comes to actually graduating minorities. While 9 out of 10 white students routinely get their diplomas within six years, only 7 out of 10 black students made it to graduation day in several recent classes."If you look at who enters college, it now looks like America," says Hilary Pennington, director of postsecondary programs for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has closely studied enrollment patterns in higher education."But if you look at who walks across the stage for a diploma, it's still largely the white, upper-income population."The United States once had the highest graduation rate of any nation. Now it stands 10th.For the first time in American history, there is the risk that the rising generation will be less well educated than the previous one.The graduation rate among 25- to 34-year-olds is no better than the rate for the 55- to 64-year-olds who were going to college more than 30 years ago.Studies show that more and more poor and non-white students want to graduate from college –but their graduation rates fall far short of their dreams. The graduation rates for blacks, Latinos, and Native Americans lag far behind the graduation rates for whites and Asians. As the minority population grows in the United States, low college graduation rates become a threat to national prosperity. The problem is pronounced at public universities. In 2023 the University of Wisconsin-Madison –one of the top five or so prestigious public universities –graduated 81% of its white students within six years, but only 56% of its blacks. At less-selective state schools, the numbers get worse.During the same time frame, the University of Northern Iowa graduated 67% of its white students, but only 39% of its munity colleges have low graduation rates generally –but rock-bottom rates for minorities.A recent review of California community colleges found that while a third of the Asian students picked up their degrees, only 15% of African-Americans did so as well.Private colleges and universities generally do better, partly because they offer smaller classes and more personal attention. But when it comes to a significant graduation gap, Bowdoin has company.Nearby Colby College logged an 18-point difference between white and black graduates in 2023 and 25 points in 2023.Middlebury College in Vermont, another top school, had a 19-point gap in 2023 and a 22-point gap in 2023.The most selective private schools –Harvard, Yale, and Princeton –show almost no gap between black and white graduation rates. But that may have more to do with their ability to select the best students.According to data gathered by Harvard Law School professor Lani Guinier, the most selective schools are more likely to choose blacks who have at least one immigrant parent from Africa or the Caribbean than black students who are descendants of American slaves."Higher education has been able to duck this issue for years, particularly the more selective schools, by saying the responsibility is on the individual student," says Pennington of the GatesFoundation."If they fail, it's their fault." Some critics blame affirmative action –students admitted with lower test scores and grades from shaky high schools often struggle at elite schools. But a bigger problem may be that poor high schools often send their students to colleges for which they are "undermatched": they could get into more elite, richer schools, but instead go to community colleges and low-rated state schools that lack the resources to help them. Some schools out for profit cynically increase tuitions and count on student loans and federal aid to foot the bill –knowing full well that the students won't make it."The school keeps the money, but the kid leaves with loads of debt and no degree and no ability to get a better job.Colleges are not holding up their end," says Amy Wilkins of the Education Trust.A college education is getting ever more expensive.Since 1982 tuitions have been rising at roughly twice the rate of inflation. In 2023 the net cost of attending a four-year public university –after financial aid –equaled 28% of median (中间旳)family income, while a four-year private university cost 76% of median family income.More and more scholarships are based on merit, not need.Poorer students are not always the best-informed consumers.Often they wind up deeply in debt or simply unable to pay after a year or two and must drop out. There once was a time when universities took pride in their dropout rates.Professors would begin the year by saying, "Look to the right and look to the left. One of you is not going to be here by the end of the year." But such a Darwinian spirit is beginning to give way as at least a few colleges face up to the graduation gap.At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the gap has been roughly halved over the last three years. The university has poured resources into peercounseling to help students from inner-city schools adjust to the rigor (严格规定)and faster pace of a university classroom –and also to help minority students overcome the stereotype that they are less qualified.Wisconsin has a "laserlike focus" on building up student skills in the first three months, according to vice provost (教务长)Damon Williams.State and federal governments could sharpen that focus everywhere by broadly publishing minority graduation rates. For years private colleges such as Princeton and MIT have had success bringing minorities onto campus in the summer before freshman year to give them some prepara tory courses. The newer trend is to start recruiting poor and non-white students as early as the seventh grade, using innovative tools to identify kids with sophisticated verbal skills.Such pro grams can be expensive, of course, but cheap compared with the millions already invested in scholarships and grants for kids who have little chance to graduate without special support. With effort and money, the graduation gap can be closed.Washington and Lee is a small, selective school in Lexington, Va.Its student body is less than 5% black and less than 2% Latino. While the school usually graduated about 90% of its whites, the graduation rate of its blacks and Latinos had dipped to 63% by 2023."We went through a dramatic shift," says Dawn Watkins, the vice president for student affairs. The school aggressively pushed mentoring (辅导) of minorities by other students and "partnering" with parents at a special pre-enrollment session. The school had its first-ever black st spring the school graduated the same proportion of minorities as it did whites. If the United States wants to keep up in the globaleconomic race, it will have to pay systematic attention to graduating minorities, not just enrolling them.注意: 此部分试题请在答题卡1上作答。

The locally grown vegetables on the farm aren’t just pretty. “We play an important role in public health nutritionprograms,” says Cordero’s dad, Mark Guttridge, who started this farm with his wife, Kena, 17 years ago.At a meeting with about a dozen local farmers, two state representatives, and the Colorado officials of agriculture, Guttridge explains how Boulder county has made creative investments in his farm that could be spread to the state or even national level. Before the meeting, Guttridge shows them one of those investments.A dozen sheep, which Guttridge raises for wool, feed on root vegetables like radishes that have been leftover fo r them. “So these guys are out fertilizing the vegetable field,” Guttridge laughs. “They’ll be out here a couple more weeks, and then we’ll get our next summer vegetables planted right there.” Around the field is a special moveable type of fencing that Oll in Farms bought using financial aid from the Boulder County Sustainability Office. It allows them to move the sheep from one field to another, fertilizing as they go. The goal of these investments is “really building up our soil health,” he explains. “That relates directly to the nutrient quality of the food-healthy soil grows healthy food.”The county also makes an effort to get that healthy food out to different communities to boost public health. That’s where the Boulder County Public Health department c omes in. It created a coupon program to give discounts to people buying fruits and vegetables from Ollin Farms. Nutrition incentive programs, like those public health fruit and vegetable coupons, are spreading all over the country, and most are funded through the federal farm bill. Amy Yaroch, executive director at the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition, says “It’s a trip le win. It’s basically good for the consumers who live in that particular community because they’re getting the healthy food, it’s goo d for the farmer, and then it’s good for the economy.”4. What does Ollin Farms do?A.It makes public nutrition health plans.B.It offers financial aid to other farms.C.It provides cheap food to the local community.D.It grows fruits and vegetables rich in nutrition.5. How does Boulder county support sustainable farming practices at Ollin Farms?A.By raising sheep on radishes. B.By buying fences for farmhouses.C.By funding the farm’s soil health.D.By giving advice about fertilizing fields.6. W hat is Amy’s attitude towards “nutrition incentive programs”?A.Cautious. B.Dismissive. C.Unclear. D.Approving.7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?A.Couponing for Health: Stimulating Nutrition ChoicesB.Growing Health: Innovations in Farm and Public Health InitiativesC.Fertile Fields and Furry Friends: A Farming Fairy TaleD.Local Produce, Global Impact: The Nutrition Choices of Ollin FarmsWith the ocean covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said scientists and researchers had depended on sonar (声呐) technologies to understand and map the sea floor which had charted only about 10% of the world’s ocean. For the ocean and coastal waters in the US, the number is just around 35%.We know less about our planet’s ocean than what we know about the far side of the moon or the surface of Mars. Part of the reason for the lack of observation is the challenge of powering an underwater camera. Researchers have used ships to recharge cameras or observed with a camera tied to a ship to solve the issue, which is expensive and unsuitable for long-term observations. Recently, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have taken a major step to iron out this problem by developing a battery-free, wireless underwater camera that could harvest energy underwater on its own for long periods. To keep power consumption as low as possible, the researchers used off-the-shelf, ultra-low-power imaging sensors. The device takes color photos, even in dark underwater environments, and sends image data wirelessly through the water. The camera is powered by sound. It changes mechanical energy from sound waves traveling through water into electrical energy that powers its imaging and communications equipment. After getting and encoding image data, the camera also uses sound waves to send the data to a receiver that reconstructs the image. Those sound waves could come from any source, like a passing ship or marine life. As it doesn’t need a power source, the camera could run for weeks on end before getting it back, enabling scientists to search remote parts of the ocean for new species. Now that researchers have demonstrated a working prototype (原型), they plan to enhance the device so it is practical in real-world settings. For future application, these cameras may be used to take images of ocean pollution and create more accurate models to monitor climate change to better understand how climate change impacts the underwater world, and advance various undersea scientific fields.8. What do the data in paragraph 1 mainly show?A.Undersea exploration is poor in the US.B.Much of the planet’s ocean remains unexplored.C.The mapping of the sea floor is time-consuming.D.Technology development matters a lot to sea observation.9. What limits the researchers’ undersea exploration according to the text?A.The complexity of the sea environment.B.The concern about potential sea pollution.C.The shortage of investment in ocean exploration.D.The inability to effectively power underwater cameras.10. What does the underlined phrase “iron out” in paragraph 3 probably mean?A.Overcome. B.Face.C.Analyze. D.Illustrate.11. Which of the following can best describe the MIT underwater camera?A.Secure and stable. B.Expensive but effective.C.Impractical but advanced. D.Self-sufficient and energy-saving.It was February 24, 2017, and my husband, David, and I were both at work. It was a day like any other. Our 15-year-old son, Justin, his sister and his friend Mike were playing with a ball in our backyard. Completely a common day! What happened next was exactly a storm. Justin suddenly suffered cardiac arrest (心脏停搏) caused by a hit to the chest, and his heart just stopped. No pulse, no heartbeat. There are only about 10 to 20 cases a year. And it was almost always deadly until recently, when CPR (心肺复苏) has worked in up to one-third of cases.Thankfully, the other children acted immediately instead of freezing in fear. Mike called 911 while my daughter called my husband. That second call proved vitally important, as my husband was able to get in touch with a neighbor who ran over and started CPR. And later, the doctors arrived and quickly shocked Justin’s heartbeat rhythm (节奏) back to normal.Sinc e then, I’ve found myself changed as a parent. There is more worry now. This unexpected incident has made me realize that anything can happen to my children. So, we’re doing what we can to be prepared. Earlier this year, Justin took part in a community education event with our fire department teaching Hands-Only CPR to the public. At least 100 participants showed up, and Justin shared his story to show why CPR is so important. At a local university where I work as a nurse lecturer, I’ve volunteered to join the CPR and AED first aid training for incoming freshmen.David and I feel very fortunate to still have our son with us. If the kids hadn’t known to call 911, he wouldn’t be here. If our neighbor hadn’t known CPR, Justin wouldn’t be here. I think everyone should take the time to learn CPR. You could save a life — maybe the life of someone you love. Cardiac arrest often comes without warning. Everything will be normal right up until the point it isn’t. You have to know what to do.12. Why does the author say the incident was a storm?A.Her son played dangerous sports. B.Her son had a close encounter with death.C.Her children made a real mess when playing. D.Her neighbor complained of the children's noise.13. How did the author feel about the other childre n’s responses?A.Curious. B.Grateful. C.Surprised. D.Puzzled.14. What did the author and Justin do after the incident?A.They worked as medical workers. B.They shared their stories on speakingtours.C.They trained others in first aid skills. D.They introduced first aid courses toschools.15. What does the last paragraph mainly highlight?A.The theory behind CPR. B.The ways of ensuring child safety.C.The causes of cardiac arrest. D.The importance of learning first aid. Health, as the old saying goes, is over wealth, so it’s of great significance to keep fit. You can take away our money, our house, or our clothes and we can survive. 16 That is why I eat healthfully, exercise regularly, and keep up my social life.Eating healthfully is important to maintain one’s health. I try to avoid foods high in fat like French fries or cookies. I also try to limit the amount of animal protein I consume. 17 So, it is important to know how to cook these foods so that the nutrients are not lost in the cooking process. Our muscles must continue to be strong to support our body as we age. Exercise helps the bones build density and helps us maintain our posture. 18 A regular exercise program of cardiovascular training and weight training is an important part of keeping us healthy.19 Studies have shown that people with a wide range of social contacts get fewer colds and recover faster from diseases than those who aren’t socially active. For the sake of health, I like to play and interact with my friends and I always feel better when I am with them than when I am alone.By eating properly and exercising regularly, I can keep my body at an appropriate weight and can maintain my health. By spending time with my friends, I can keep my mind as well as my body happy. 20I had never picked up a camera before my freshman year in 2012, when my journey to an artist began.
