For Augie, holding a smartphone almost means knowing everything.During my childhood I was crazy about books. Over time, reading hijacked my brain, as large areas once processing the real world adapted to processing the printed word. As far as I can tell, this early immersion (沉浸) didn’t prevent my development. Many parents worry that “screen time” will damage children’s development, but recent research suggests that most of the common fears about children and screens are unfounded. There is one exception: looking at screens before bed really disturbs sleep, in people of all ages. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) used to recommend strict restrictions on screen exposure. Last year, the organization examined the relevant science more thoroughly and changed its recommendations. The new guidelines stress that what matters is what children watch and with whom.New tools have always led to panic guesses. The novel, the telephone, and the television were all declared to be the End of Civilization, particularly in the hands of the young. Part of the reason may be that adult brains require a lot of focus and effort to learn something new, while children’s brains are designed to master new environments naturally. New technologies always seem disturbing to the adults attempting to master them, while attractive to those children likeAugie. When Augie’s father got home, Augie rushed to meet him and said in excitement. “Daddy, Daddy, look,” he said, reaching for my phone. “Do you know how bees make honey? I’ll show you…”21. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “hijacked” in Paragraph 2?A. occupied.B. damaged.C. improved.D. relaxed.22. What do the new guidelines of AAP focus on about “screen time”?A. The harm to children.B. The content and context.C. Children’s sleep.D. People’s fears.23. What might be the author’s attitude towards “screen time”?A. Opposed.B. Doubtful.C. Disappointed.D. Favorable.BToday companies have branches around the world. More than 11% of the US employers and employees work online either full-time or part-time, and that number is continuing growing. It is believed that it is a waste of time and money to fly around the world for face-to-face meetings. An effective solution to this problem is to use Web meetings.A large group of presentations, training classes and meetings are done online without losing the face-to-face experience. Web meetings are online meetings where an organizer invites attendees to listen to or watch an online presentation by presenters. Besides, Web meetings can be recorded for later use in presentations or training projects or downloaded for on-demand playback.Presenters can take real-time surveys to study how to hold a successful meeting. Some Web meeting software programs can monitor the users’ desktop behavior to see if they become distracted from the presentation and begin working on other documents. If so, the program can tell presenters when the listeners lose their attention, and how long the distraction lasts. In this way, the presenters will know which parts of their meetings need improving.Web meetings can work well because they’re hosted on a server (服务器). Images from the presenter’s desktop are taken, uploaded to a server and then downloaded by people who have accessto the server. Web meetings require a powerful server to deal with several images a second and “serve” them back to thousands of users at the same time.Companies have two choices when it comes to these servers. They can either buy a special Web meeting server to host their meetings on-site, or they can pay for a Web meeting service every time and let the off-site provider worry about hosting the meetings. The choice depends on how frequently the company holds Web meetings, the average number of people attending the meetings, and the quality of engineering and information technology.Web meetings are an excellent example of how technology is changing the way we do business. With all the technologies today, the traditional office might soon be a thing of the past.24.What is the disadvantage of the traditional meeting?A.It needs more people to organize it.B.It is expensive and time-consuming.C.It results in traffic accidents frequently.D.It fails to meet the demands of big companies.25.How do some Web meeting software programs help improve the meetings?A.By presenting successful documents.B.By recording the frequency of distraction.C.By tracking the listeners’ state of attention.D.By taking surveys about a successful meeting.26.What do you know about Web meetings according to the text?A.Web meetings are likely to be widely used.B.Web meetings help presenters stay focused.C.Web meetings determine the quality of engineering.D.Web meetings work well without the help of a server.CEvery year, thousands of teenagers participate in programs at their local art museums. But do any of them remember their time at museum events later in life? A new report suggests that the answer is yes – and finds that alumni (毕业生) of arts-based museum programs credit them with changing the course of their lives, even years after the fact. The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles recently asked researchers to conduct a study to find out how effective their long-standing teen art programs really are. They involved over 300 former participants of four programs for teens that have been in existence since the 1990s. Alumni, whose current ages range from 18 to 36, were invited to find out how they viewed their participation years after the fact.Among the alumni surveyed, 75 percent of alumni rated the teen program experience as the most favorable impact on their own lives, beating family, school and their neighborhoods. Nearly 55 percent thought t hat it was one of the most important experiences they’d ever had, regardless of age. And two-thirds said that they were often in situations where their experience in museums affected their actions or thoughts. It turns out that participating in art programs also helps keep teens enthusiastic about arts even after they reach adulthood: 96 percent of participants had visited an art museum within the last two years, and 68 percent had visited an art museum five or more times within the last two years. Thirty-two percent of program alumni work in the arts as adults.Though the study is the first of its kind to explore the impact of teen-specific art programs in museums, it reflects other research on the important benefits of engaging with the arts. A decade of surveys by the National Endowment for the Arts found that childhood experience with the arts is significantly associated with their income and educational attainment as adults. Other studies have linked arts education to everything from lower drop-out rates to improvement in critical thinking skills.27. What does the underlined phrase “the fact” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. Changing the course of children’s life.B. Participating in childhood art programs.C. Organizing arts-based museum programs.D. Remembering the time at museum events.28. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell?A. The result of the study.B. The process of the study.C. The approach to the study.D. The object and content of the study.29. What can be inferred of the study mentioned in the text?A. Passion for arts may remain long in kids’ whole life.B. No other studies exist concerning the benefits of arts.C. Age matters in how people view their art experiences.D. Most children taking part in art programs will work in arts.30. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. How is Art Connected to Our Life?B. Can Art Education Affect Our Income?C. What Should Art Museums do for Kids?D. Should Children Walk into Art Museums?七选五(山东师范大学附属中学2020届高三第三次月考)Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from ourselves or someone else. The positive and negative effects are just as lasting.31 We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. 32Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. 33Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we oncesaid. We remember unkind words said to us as well. Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: 34 If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem and motivate others to do their best. 35 Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.A.Is it loving?B.How should I say it?C.We all talk to ourselves sometimes.D.Negative words destroy all those things.E.Generally people like positive and pleasant words.F.However, critical language may cause anger and defense.G.So we should only speak encouraging words to ourselves.

Many people like sunshine (阳光) a lot. 1 . They think rain makes them feel sad. For a long vacation, they like going to the beach to enjoy sunshine. 2 . I like sunshine very much, but I also enjoy rain.3 . It can make me feel quiet. On rainy days, I like listening to music and doing some reading, or just looking at the rain and daydreaming I think it’s a good way to relax when it rains.5 . I hope you can feel happy no matter (无论) it rains or it’s sunny.B1 . Being angry doesn’t really solve much, but what people do when they feel angry is important. The goal is to calm down and try to solve what is bothering you. This is hard for some kids and adults, too. Instead of calming down, some kids might keep getting more and more upset until they explode like a volcano!2 Their anger might be so strong that they lose control of their temper. They may act in ways unacceptable and hurtful. People may say that someone has trouble controlling their temper.3 Some kids might get so angry that they scream at their parents, break something, or even worse, hit their brothers and sisters.4 However, it’s not OK for a kid to do any of those things. Kidsdon’t want to act in this way, but sometimes angry feelings can be hard to manage. So what to do? Well, the good news is that kids don’t just have to keep making the same mistakes over and over again. 5 .Imagine your temper as a puppy inside you that needs some training. The puppy is not bad-it will probably turn out a great dog. It just needs to learn some rules because, right now, that puppy is causing some problems to you.CAmericans’ WeekendsWhat do American families usually do on weekends? 1 .

B(2023·河南·校联考一模)As I stood in line waiting to cash out at my favorite retail store, I studied the customer in front of me. She was young, maybe early twenties. But she already had a tired look to her. Her face looked drawn from exhaustion. Her thin, unbuttoned winter coat had seen those bad days. The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat. Powdered milk, day-old bread, bargain soap, and inexpensive shampoo completed her purchases — well, almost.“Next!” When the cashier finally told her the cost, the woman’s face paled. She opened a purse and began counting small bills and change. It was obvious she didn’t have enough, and she scanned her groceries to see what she could do without. One by one, she removed things, but she still came up short. She continued to discard much-needed goods while the cashier set them aside patiently. The child’s items remained in the cart, however. The woman finally paid, and moved down to bag them. When my turn came, I moved forward and placed several items the woman had taken out, whispering “Separate bags, please” to the cashier. I wondered how I could sneak the extra things into the old cart she’d brought without being caught. My clerk solved the problem by “accidentally” rolling several oranges hard enough on the conveyer belt so that they flew past the lady and onto the floor.“I’ll get those,” the woman offered kindly and ran to pick up the runaway fruit. I quickly put the two extra bags into her cart. Just as I put the second one in, I noticed a twenty-dollar bill peeking out that I had not placed in there.“You put that money in there, didn’t you?” I accused the clerk with a laugh when I went to pay my bill. I was surprised when she shook her head. “No, it was her,” she replied, pointing to another woman. My small, insignificant gesture had rippled to become a larger kindness than I ever could have imagined. 1.What can we infer about the customer in front of “me” in Paragraph 1?A.She is a woman to think of others before herself.B.She pretended to be poor to gain other’s sympathy.C.Everything about her screamed hardship and need.D.Everything she chose wasn’t what she truly needed.2.What does the underlined word “discard” probably mean in Paragraph 2?A.Handle. B.Separate. C.Test out. D.Take out.3.Why did the clerk roll oranges hard enough on the conveyer belt?A.To do “me” a favor.B.To train her skill.C.To show her acting experience. D.To help increase grocery sales.4.What can be the best title for the text?A.Kindness in Giving Creates Love B.What Goes around Comes aroundC.Being Happy Is Enough D.More than a Coincidence【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.A【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。

If gardeners can keep off the birds and other wildlife trying to eat the seeds, they can have a large harvest. The bright yellow blooms will make a rainbow garden, brightening up any space. However, planting the sunflower seeds is a skilled job. Plant seeds no deeper than the full length of itself. Smaller sized sunflowers can be spaced a foot apart. Larger varieties will need to be spaced as far apart as three feet. This allows ripe plants enough space for the seed heads toripen without knocking the ripe seeds off before gardeners have a chance to harvest them. Most sunflower seeds, especially those with eatable seeds, are large enough to handle without the need for seed sorters. This is why sunflowers make an excellent choice for a children's garden as well. Gardeners will want to mix plenty of soil fertilizers (肥料)into the ground as sunflowers tend to be heavy feeders.Sunflowers can be slow starters and the tiny new plants don't seem to grow very rapidly. Gardeners should protect the new plants as they begin to grow. Once they get going, sunflowers are able to outgrow many weeds, making them easier to grow in the home vegetable garden than many other plants. Most pests and diseases are not a bother to the sunflower, however, more than one gardener has said that their lovely looking plants were ravaged overnight by hungry squirrels, mice or birds. To preserve their harvest, gardeners can cover the ripening seed head with stockings or net cloth to help keep the destroyers off the seeds.Planting sunflower seeds is easy and can help even the smallest gardener feel successful in their gardening attempts.8.Why should sunflowers be planted with enough space in between?A.To prevent birds from eating sunflower seeds.B.To protect the ripe seed heads before harvest.C.To offer the sunflowers enough sunlight.D.To help the sunflowers grow stronger.9.Why do people tend to choose sunflowers for children's gardens?A.They want to decorate their garden with sunflowers.B.The seeds are easy to plant and unnecessary to sort.C.Sunflowers don't need too much soil fertilizer.D.Tiny new sunflowers can grow very fast.10.Which can replace the underlined word “ravaged” in Paragraph 5?A. When the hero of the Revolutionary War stopped in Bath, Rumsey showed Washington his invention. It was a model of a boat using the power of rivers current to travel against the current. The boat had a set of wheels with two longpoles fastened under the boat. Rumsey placed the boat in the Potomac River and the current turned the wheels round and round quickly, which in turn, forced the poles to push against the riverbed moving the boat against the current.Washington wrote of the invention in his diary on September 6, 1784, “The model, and its operation upon the water, which had been made to run fast, not only made me believe what I before thought, but that it might be turned to the greatest possible means of transportation.n Washington even gave Rumsey a letter stating that he had seen the boat in operation. The following year, Washington became president of the Potomac Company. One of Washington's first problems was he couldn't find anyone with experience of building canal. In July 1785, Washington remembered Rumsey's walking boat and decided that Rumsey was the man to build the canal.Rumsey had continued his work on the mechanical boat, but a full-scale model had not worked as well as the smaller version. The larger boats poles would stick or slip on the bottom of the river and when the boat moved, it lurched (突然前倾)and leaned dangerously. As making this idea a success seemed to be slipping away, Rumsey turned his sights to a new way to allow a boat to move against the current-steam power. However, Washington employed Rumsey just as he was considering the solution. Washington hired him at an annual salary of200 pounds.12.What can we learn about Rumsey's invention?A.It turned out to be practical.B.It was driven by water power.C.It was a great means of transportation.D.It had wheels to push against the riverbed.13.Seeing the model boat, Washington.A.drew a picture of it in his diaryB.employed Rumsey at onceC.wrote Rumsey a letterD.took an interest in it14.What can we learn about Rumsey from the text?A.He managed to build the mechanical boat.B.He became rich owing to his invention.C.He got great trust from Washington.D.He gave up his first idea.15.What can be the best title for the text?A.Rumsey's Walking BoatB.Rumsey and WashingtonC.A Successful Business ManD.The History of the Mechanical Boat二、阅读七选五Choosing to Study OverseasEvery year, thousands of students choose to study in another country for a semester, a summer, or a year. After that,Smith went on to create the Raising Men Lawn Care Service (RMLCS)to mow lawns for the elderly, disabled, single moms and former soldiers free of charge. As part of providing free yard work, the organization teaches children about serving their communities and lawnmower safety.A key component of RMLCS is its 50-yard challenge, which sets a goal for children nationwide to mow 50 lawns for free in their community. When a kid signs up for the challenge, the group sends him/her a white shirt with the Raising Men logo (标识),shades and ear protection. But if you were a fruit fly, asking another fruit fly, that question might have a different answer. To a fruit fly, water has a taste. Scientists want to know how the fruit fly knows water because this information may help in learning how other animals—or even individual cells—manage to use water in the right way. Water is vital to life, but too much or too little can be deadly to a living creature. So by understanding how the fruit fly tastes water, researchers may learn more about other living things.According to the new study,a protein (蛋白质)called PPK28 makes it possible for a fruit fly to taste water. Proteins build cells and tissues, fight disease and carry messages between cells. It’s not surprising that a protein is responsible for the fruit flies ability to taste water. The PPK28 protein is part of a larger family of similar proteins. One of these related proteins is used by mammals (including humans)to taste salt. Scientists have not found a protein that enables humans to “taste” water. In the experiment,Cameron and his team compared normal fruit flies with fruit flies whose taste cells had been disabled. The fruit flies were given aspecial chemical that would glow when the fly used the PPK28 protein. Then the scientists led the flies to water. When the normal flies tasted the water, the PPK28 protein lit up—showing that it was in use.The fruit fly in particular is so interesting that some scientists are hard at work creating a complete map of the fruit fly brain. This map will show all of a flies neurons (神经元)and help scientists understand how the neurons work together.8. How do most people feel when asked about the taste of water?A. Amused.B. Frightened.C. Disappointed.D. Confused.9. Why do scientists want to know how the fruit fly knows water?A. To decrease the number of the fruit fly.B. To know something about other creatures.C. To learn to use water correctly.D. To describe the taste of water.10. What do we know about the PPK28 protein?A. It enables humans to taste salt.B. The fruit fly can’t live without it.C. It enables the fruit fly to taste water.D. The fruit fly uses it to avoid illnesses.11. What will the scientists continue to work at?A. Studying the fruit flies neuron systems.B. Finding more information about cells.C. Creating maps of human brains.D. Making the PPK28 protein. If you buy a washing machine,a fridge or a television in Europe,it comes with a sticker. Thanks to a 1992 EU rule, all appliances (电器)must be labeled (贴标签)with their energy efficiency. So why has our food system—which threatens 10,000 species with extinction, produces about 30% of greenhouse gases, and drives 800% of our air pollution—only ever had voluntary eco-labels?The appliances ruling had a huge impact (冲击力); initially,75% of fridges and freezers were rated G to D (low efficiency),but today 98% are classed A++ or A+++. Worldwide, the energy efficiency of labeled applianceshas increased three times faster than appliances without labels. Introducing an equal system for food could have an even bigger impact.Mandatory environmental labels would change how we produce and consume in far-reaching ways. First, producers would have to measure their impacts in a uniform way and be accountable for the results. This would not be expensive:it is free to monitor environmental impacts using digital tools such as Field print and the Cool Farm Tool. Second, they support sustainable consumption. Our research found that products that look, taste and cost the same can have dramatically different environmental impacts. High-impact beef producers use 5,7000% more land and create l,000% more greenhouse gases than low-impact producers. Labels would allow consumers to tell these products apart. They would highlight both high-and low-impact producers,in the same way, across multiple products. This would encourage more people to think about their choices by exposing them to the facts every time they are in the shops. We can also use labels to turn smaller consumer changes into large environmental benefits:because a small number of producers create a large share of the impact, simply avoiding high-impact producers can make a huge contribution to pollution reductions.12. Why does the author mention the appliances in Paragraph 1?A. To applaud the 1992 EU rule.B. To bring up the topic of labeling food.C. To point out the pollution they caused.D. To compare their energy consumption rates.13. What do the figures in Paragraph 2 show?A. The importance of saving energy.B. The debate about eco-labeled appliances.C. The effectiveness of the appliances ruling.D. The problem caused by appliances of low efficiency.14. What does the underlined word “Mandatory” in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Compulsory.B. Effective.C. Different.D. Independent.15. Why are eco-labels used for products?A. To increase the profits of low-impact producers.B. To show producers environmental impacts.C. To guide consumers to buy healthier food.D. To expose consumers to more products.
