A recent study of urban neighbourhoods in Shanghai and Hangzhou found that middle-income residents living in walkable neighbourhoods enjoy better health than residents who lived in less walkable neighbourhoods in urban China. Finally, healthier lifestyles begin in grocery store aisles. Governments should encourage tighter connections between agricultural production systems, urban grocers and food vendors. Such initiatives can also help urban residents better understand the mechanics of food sourcing. This raises awareness about the relationship between natural foods and healthy lifestyles. If this history only later became clear, what was immediately obvious was that finding the pipe would be a much bigger project than Mr. Faggiano had anticipated. He did not initially tell his wife about the extent of the work. He tied a rope around the chest of his youngest son, Davide, then 12, and lowered him to dig in small, darkened openings. “I made sure to tell him not to tell his mama,” he said. His wife, , soon became suspicious. “We had all these dirty clothes, every day,” she said. “I didn’t understand what was going on.

All Luciano Faggiano wanted when he purchased the seemingly unremarkable building at 56 Via Ascanio Grandi, was to open a restaurant. The only problem was the toilet. Sewage kept backing up. So Mr. Faggiano enlisted his two older sons to help him dig a trench and investigate. He predicted the job would take about a week. “We found underground corridors and other rooms, so we kept digging,” said Mr. Faggiano, 60. His search for a sewage pipe, which began in 2000, became one family’s tale of discovery.

CATTI英语三级《笔译实务》真题及答案Section 1: English-Chinese Translation (50 points)Translate the following passage into Chinese. For generations, coal has been the lifeblood of this mineral-rich stretch of eastern Utah. Mining families proudly recall all the years they toiled underground. Supply companies line the town streets. Above the road that winds toward the mines, a soot-smudged miner peers out from a billboard with the slogan “Coal = Jobs.”But recently, fear has settled in. The state’s oldest coal-fired power plant, tucked among the canyons near town, is set to close,a result of new, stricter federal pollution regulations. As energy companies tack away from coal, toward cleaner, cheaper natural gas, people here have grown increasingly afraid that their community may soon slip away. Dozens of workers at the facility here, the Carbon Power Plant, have learned that they must retire early or seek other jobs. Local trucking and equipment outfits are preparing to take business elsewhere.“There are a lot of people worried,” said Kyle Davis, who has been employed at the plant since he was 18.But Rocky Mountain Power, the utility that operates the plant, has determined that it would be too expensive to retrofit the agingplant to meet new federal standards on mercury emissions. The plant is scheduled to be shut by April 2015.For the last several years, coal plants have been shutting down across the country, driven by tougher environmental regulations, flattening electricity demand and a move by utilities toward natural gas.The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the stricter emissions regulations for the plants will result in billions of dollarsin related health savings, and will have a sweeping impact on air quality.“Coal plants are t he single largest source of dangerous carbon pollution in the United States, and we have ready alternatives like wind and solar to replace them,” said Bruce Nilles, director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign, which wants to shut all of the nation’s coal plants. For many here, coal jobs are all they know. The industry united the area during hard times, too, especially during the dark days after nine men died in a 2007 mining accident some 35 miles down the highway. Virtually everyone around Price knew the men, six of whom remain entombed in the mountainside. But there is quiet acknowledgment that Carbon County will have to change — if not now, soon.Pete Palacios, who worked in the mines for 43 years, has seen coal roar and fade here. Now 86, his eyes grew cloudy as he recalled his first mining job. He was 12, and earned $1 a day. “I’m retired, soI’ll be fine. But these young guys?” Pete Palacios said, his voice trailing off.Section 2: Chinese-English Translation (50 points)Translate the following passage into English.天柱县位于贵州省东部,是川渝黔通往两广、江浙的'重要门户。

As a Dutch citizen, I have lived in Europe for 46 years and studied European consumer behavior for decades.I believe that Sand River offers something unique to the European market. It has established long-term supply relations with herdsman (牧民) families and owns advanced German machinery. Thus it combines natural resources with modern manufacturing techniques. Since then, we have met several timesand talked about Sand River "s philosophy, strategy, and appeal to both Chinese and international consumers. While you likely will find some valuable advice, you may come across a few tips that could mislead you."You need a lengthy cover letter." This probably is one of the "bad cover letter tips." Think about it: hiring managers have piles of resumes and cover l etters to review. If yours is longer than the rest, it might not get read at all. Aim to get all of your points across in three brief paragraphs: a clear introduction that lets employers know which job you are applying for and why you are interested in the position; a paragraph that includes a few specific examples of how you have excelled (擅长) in past roles that are relevant to the open position; and a concluding paragraph that tells employers how you will benefit their company and requests a future meeting."Your cover letter is less important than your resume." Some hiring managers shove (随手扔) cover letters to the side, but most do not. Because you never know what type of hiring manager you are dealing with, it is best to submit a nice cover letter. While some employers place less emphasis on cover letters, others decide who to interview based on them. CATTI 2018年 11月份 笔译三级真题

CATTI 2018年11月份笔译三级真题:英译汉Passage 1Plastic and traces of hazardous chemicals have been found in Antarctica, one of the world’s last great wildernesses, according to a new study.Researchers spent three months taking water and snow samples from remote areas of the continent earlier this year. These have now been analysed and researchers have confirmed the majority contained “persistent hazardous chemicals” or microplastics. The findings come amid growing concern about the extent of the plastic pollution crisis which scientists have warned risks “permanent contamination” of the planet.Earlier this week, the UN warned it is one of the world’s biggest environmental threats and said although 60 countries were taking urgent action more needed to be done. The new report by researchers at Greenpeace is part of global campaign to create the world’s biggest ocean sanctuary in the seas around Antarctica to protect the fragile ecosystem from industrial fishing and climate change.Frida Bengtsson, of Greenpeace’s Protect the Antarctic campaign, said the findings proved that even the most remote areas of the planet were not immune from the impact of manmade pollution.“We need action at source, to stop these pollutants ending up in the Antarctic in the first place, and we need an Antarctic ocean sanctuary to give space for penguins, whales and the entire ecosystem to recover from the pressures they’re facing,” she said.Seven of the eight sea-surface water samples tested contained microplastics such as microfibres. Seven of the nine snow samples tested contained detectable concentrations of the persistent hazardous chemicals – polyfluorinated alkylated substances, or PFAS.Researchers said the chemicals are widely used in many industrial processes and consumer products and have been linked to reproductive and developmental issues in wildlife. They said the snow samples gathered included freshly fallen snow, suggesting the hazardous chemicals had come from contaminated rain or snowfall.Prof Alex Rogers, a specialist in sustainable oceans at the Oxford Martin school, Oxford University, said the discovery of plastics and chemicals in Antarctica confirmed that manmade pollutants were now affecting ecosystems in every corner of the world. And he warned the consequences of this pervasive contamination remained largely unknown.“The big question now is what are the actual consequences of finding this stuff here? Many of these chemicals are pretty nasty and as they move up the food chain they may be having serious consequences for the health of wildlife, and ultimately humans. The effects of microplastics on marine life, likewise, are largely not understood,” he said. There is relatively little data on the extent of microplastics in Antarctic waters, and researchers said they hoped this new study would lead to a greater understanding of the global extent of plastic and chemical pollutants.Bengtsson said: “Plastic has now been found in all corners of our oceans, from the Antarctic to the Arctic and at the deepest point of the ocean, the Mariana trench. We need urgent action to reduce the flow of plastic into our seas and we need large-scale marine reserves – like a huge Antarctic ocean sanctuary which over 1.6m people are calling for – to protect marine life and our oceans for future generations.”The samples were gathered during a three-month Greenpeace expedition to the Antarctic from January to March 2018. The Guardian joined the trip for two weeks in February.A decision on the sanctuary proposal, which is being put forward by the EU and supported by environmental campaign groups around the world, will be taken at the forthcoming meeting of the Antarctic Ocean Commission in Tasmania in October.参考译文在今年早些时候采集的大部分冰雪样本中发现了微量塑料和有害化学物质。

This crisis will test the political resolve of governments that have historically focused on ending hunger. These governments must understand that the factors making cities convenient and productive also make their residents prone to obesity. Urbanites enjoy a variety of food. Additionally, international fast food chains are flourishing in developing countries. The health risks of such diets are compounded by the sedentary lifestyles of urban dwellers. People’s leisure time is also being occupied by television, movies, and video games in the growing number of households. The alarming implication of these trends is that developing countries may become sick before they get rich. That sickness may, in turn, cripple health systems. The yearly health care costs in Southeast Asia of obesity-related complications like diabetes and cardiovascular disease are already as high as US $10 billion. Such diseases are an added burden on countries already struggling to manage primary health care needs. Policies related to taxation, urban design, education and awareness and the promotion of localised food systems may help control obesity at a lower cost than eventual medical treatment for an ageing and increasingly overweight population. Some governments have already experimented with direct interventions to control obesity, such as taxation on unhealthy foods and drinks. The US pioneered the soda tax movement. Thailand, Brunei, and Singapore have adopted similar measures. South Africa is likely to introduce a sugar tax beginning in April 2018.The city of Berkeley in California recognizes that taxes alone are not enough to address obesity. Proceeds from the city’s sugar tax are used to support child nutrition and community health programmes. This underscores the importance of education and awareness.。

Many of these chemicals are pretty nasty and as they move up the food chain they may be having serious consequences for the health of wildlife, and ultimately humans. The effects of microplastics on marine life, likewise, are largely not understood,” he said.

At British hardware chain B&Q,its"elder worker"stores in Manchester and Exmouth were18percent more profitable than its regular outlets—due in part, the company says,to six times less employee turnover and60percent less shoplifting and breakage.1.Jeeba's difference from a conventional company mainly lies in______.A the age of its employeesB the number of its ownersC the quality of its productsD the scope of its operations2.In the developed world, compared with young people, the elderly______.A are better at businessB are greater in numberC have healthier lifestylesD have more job opportunities3.According to the writer,m the current situation companies are faced with the tough task of______.A creating good positionsB employing retired workersC filling vacant positionsD replacing unskilled workers4.For future prosperity, many European countries will have to______.A increase the number of young workersB offer many senior-friendly jobsC improve services for seniorsD raise their retirement ages5.B&Q's"elder worker"stores are mentioned to show that the employment of older workers______.A does not reduce a company's competitivenessB does not affect older workers"lifestyle choicesC is not a usual practice among competitive firmsD is not good news to those who are eager to retireText2Here's how I want to watch the2014Winter Olympics.I want to go to a Web site to see any event I want, whenever I want to watch it,on whatever screen I choose. I"ll gladly pay.The technology exists to make this happen today.Yet nearly two decades after the introduction of the World Wide Web,this remains a fantasy.NBC,which broadcasted the Vancouver Olympics in the United States, wouldn"t put videos on its Web site until they had been shown on prime-time TV.So Americans had the weird experience of learning from a news report during the day that something fantastic hadjust happened, and then having to wait until that night's broadcast to see it.Bloggers complained, but NBC wouldn"t give way.Its research shows that people like me,who want to watch the Olympics online, represent only7percent of the total audience. The other, bigger concern is:the Internet doesn"t deliver any money.Advertisers remain willing to pay big money to show their commercials on prime-time TV.But on the Internet? Not so much.So NBC clings to the old way of doing things. As it sees it,the prime-time show is the most important. To make matters worse,NBC was already expecting to lose $250million on the2010Vancouver Games.Good luck persuading it to invest in a risky Web project. It's easy to blame the network executives. But the NBC guys and their like are only doing what makes sense. They"re going where the money is.That needs to change.Yes,selling reporting of Olympic events over the Internet would drain away some of the prime-time audience, but my sense is many of the online subscribers would still watch the prime-time show. And over time, the subscription dollars could become a substantial revenue stream.Instead of viewing the Internet as a threat to prime time, the TV networks should see the Web as a way to sell even more of their product to a small but passionate subset of their audience.I"m hoping that by2014,that will have changed.1.According to the writer, watching the Olympics online as one likes______.A is technologically impossibleB is still denied to the audienceC has been a dream for20yearsD will no longer be free in20142.We learn that what Americans saw about the Vancouver Olympics______.A was unavailable onlineB differed from the newsC seemed weird to themD was first shown on TV3.Bloggers complained about NBC's______.A neglect of those in the minorityB excessive online advertisementsC delay in providing videos onlineD limited reporting on sports news4.After the2010Vancouver Games,NBC is likely to______.A improve its prime-time showB continue its current practiceC raise its price for advertisingD try its luck in a web program5.The writer thinks the TV networks should view the Web as a potential to help them to______.A make dramatic profitsB develop new productsC satisfy their subscribersD divide prime-time revenuesText3One important thing during the pre-Christmas rush at our house was the arrival of my daughter's kindergarten report card. She got high praise for her reading, vocabulary and overall enthusiasm. On the other hand,we learnt that she has work to do on her numbers and facility with the computer, though the detailed handwritten report her teachers prepared is absent of any words that might be interpreted as negative in describing her efforts.A number system indicates how she's measuring up in each area without any mention of passing or failing. All of which seems to make my daughter's school neither fish nor fowl when it comes to the debate over the merits of giving formal grades to kids.At one level, the advantages and disadvantages are obvious.A grade system provides a straightforward standard by which to measure how your child is progressing at school—and how he or she is getting on compared to other children. But as writer Sue Ferguson notes, "Grades can deceive."The aim should be"to measure learning, not simply what a student can recall on a test."The two aren"t the same—and if you doubt that as an adult, ask yourself whether you could sit down without any preparation and still pass those high-school-level examinations. If you"re old enough, you've lived through this debate before. At one time,it was considered unfair to put children in direct competition with one another if it could be avoided. The intention behind that may have been good, but it ignored the fact that competition, and the will to come out on top,are essential components of the human condition. This time around, educators working with a no-grades approach are emphasizing different reasons. The thing is,that approach is much more commonplace in the adultworkplace than is the traditional pass-fail system we place on our children. Many workplaces conduct regular employee evaluations. There are usually fairly strict limits to what an employer can tell an employee in those evaluations—and even then, negative evaluations can be challenged by the employee. No matter where you sit in the debate over the grade system, then, the real question is this:if it's so good for kids, why isn"t that also true for adults?1.The school report indicates that the writer's daughter______.A lacks interest in her school workB ranks among the best at languageC has some trouble with her handwritingD needs to improve in math and computer skills2.We can learn that the girl's school tries to deliver the report______.A in a positive wayB in a scientific wayC in an attractive wayD in an enthusiastic way3.Sue Ferguson seems dissatisfied with the grade system for its focus on ______.A the process of getting the knowledgeB the capability of memorizing for the testC the procedure of measuring learningD the standard of comparing schools4.The writer would agree that cutting children off from competition is______.A fit for human developmentB fit for their age and experienceC against a key part of human natureD out of consideration for children5.It can be learned that today's educators supporting the no-grades approach insist that______.A kids be allowed to challenge the negative evaluationsB the traditional teacher-student relationship be changedC the evaluation system for kids be similar to that for adultsD strict rules be set up in evaluating school childrenPart BDirections:Read the texts from a magazine in which five people voice their different opinions in response to an article on the issue of praising. For questions61-65,match the name of each person(61-65)to one of the statements(A-G)given below.Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET1.Mike:Praise often and sincerely—it's as simple as that.Employees want to feel needed and appreciated.By offering sincere praise with examples about what they did right, you"ll go far in creating an energetic team.Meanwhile,I don"t agree with the assertion that"to focus on what needs improving isn"t good management."In fact,it's the balance of praise along with constructive criticism that drives employees to work smarter and reach higher.Frank:This article makes a valid point that needs to be understood, especially for thenew generation of workers,my generation. We don"t see ourselves as parts in the machine to be put in the dark to work.My generation needs respect in return from our employer,we need to feel appreciated beyond just a pay check,it's the difference between being fulfilled at our career and being sad at our job.Joyce:One skill missing in today's workplace is the ability to build effective business relationships. At the core of that relationship is the need for consistent feedback. "How am I doing?"is a question that should be answered consistently. When you tell an employee once a year what is needed to improve, you have not done your job as a leader—build skills, provide feedback and help the employee grow and develop.Ellen:I don"t see a problem with praising employees when it's truly deserved (insincere praise is an entirely different story). It's a cost-free"benefit",if you will,in that it allows employees to see that their efforts are both noticed and valued. In the work world there are always people available to tell that you are doing something wrong and far too few occasions when employees are told that they"ve done something right!Diana:Praise what the employee did.Be specific about why it was helpful. An employee who continually earns your praise also deserves your attention as to how else to reward their behavior.Meaningful praise encourages people beyond anything else.Written comments are available for later review. They give them confidence that they can"do it again."I never regretted praising an employee who deserved it butoften kicked myself for missing an opportunity. Now match the name of each person(61to65)to the appropriate statement.Note:there are two extra statements.StatementsA.Praise combined with criticism is helpful.B.Praise can bring about many kinds of desired behavior.C.Employees may feel it hard to accept insincere praise.D.Let employees know exactly for what they are praised.E.In my opinion,we are not generous enough to give praise.F.Employees need helpful advice on a regular basis.G.Money alone cannot guarantee a sense of career fulfillment for me.SectionⅣWriting Directions:You should write your responses to both Part A and Part B of this Section on ANSWER SHEET2.Part A1.You will be transferred to the city where your friend James lives.Write an email to him, telling him about:1)the reason(s)for your job transfer;2)the help you will need from him.You should write approximately100words.Do not use your own name at the end of your e"Wang Lin"instead.Part B1.Below is a picture showing a young man who chooses to stay at home, depending on his parents for a living.Write an essay of about120words making reference to the following points:1)the possible causes of the young man's problem;2)your suggested solutions to the problem.2018年公共英语三级真题答案(精品)(总分110,做题时间90分钟)SectionⅠListening Comprehension Directions:This Section is designed to test your ability to understand spoken English. You will hear a selection of recorded materials and you must answer the questions that accompany them. CATTI三级笔译实务(附答案)

CATTI三级笔译实务Section1: English-Chinese translationThe importance of agriculture cannot be overstated. More than 50 percent of the world’s labor force is employed in agriculture. The distribution in the early 1980s ranged from 67 percent of those employed in Africa to less than 5 percent in North America. In Western Europe, the figure was about 16 percent; in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, about 32 percent; and in Asia, about 68 percent.Farm size varies widely from region to region. Recently the average for Canadian farms was about 186 ha (about 460 acres) per farm, and for U.S. farms, about 175 ha (about 432 acres). The average size of a single landholding in the Philippines, however, may be somewhat less than 3.6 ha (less than 9 acres), and in Indonesia, a little less than 1.2 ha (less than 3 acres).Size also depends on the purpose of the farm. Commercial farming, or production for cash, is usually done on large holding. The plantations of Latin America are large, privately owned estates worked by tenant labor. Single-crop plantations produce tea, rubber, cocoa. Wheat farms are most efficient when they comprise some thousands of hectares and can be worked by teams of people and machines. Australian sheep stations and other livestock farms must be large to provide grazing for thousands of animals.Individual subsistence farms or small-family mixed-farm operations are decreasing in number in developed countries but are still numerous in the developing countries of Africa and Asia. A “back-to-the-land” movement in the U.S. reversed the decline of small farms in New England and Alaska in the decade from 1970 to 1980.The conditions that determine what will be raised in an area include climate, water supply, and terrain.Over the 10,000 years since agriculture began to be developed, peoples everywhere have discovered the food value of wild plants and animals and domesticated and bred them. The most important are cereals such as wheat, rice, barley, corn and rye.Agricultural income is also derived from non-food crops such as rubber, fiber plants, tobacco, and oilseeds used in synthetic chemical compounds. Money is also derived from raising animals for pelt.Much of the foreign exchange earned by a country may be derived from a single commodity; for example, Sri Lanka depends on tea, Denmark specializes in dairy products, Australia in wool, and New England in meat products. In the U.S., wheat has become a major foreign exchange commodity in recent years. The importance of an individual country as an exporter of agricultural products depends on many variables. Among them is the possibility that the county is too little developed industrially to produce manufactured goods in sufficient quantity or technical sophistication. Such agricultural exporters include Ghana with cocoa, and Myanmar with rice. On the other hand, an exceptionally well-developed country may produce surpluses not needed by its own population; this as been true of the U.S., Canada, and some of the West European countries.

I. Reading comprehensionPassage 1Since its founding in 1948, McDonald's has grown from a family burger (汉堡包) stand to a global fast-food chain, with more than 30,000 locations in 118 countries. With 58 million daily customers worldwide, McDonald’s is now so ubiquitous around the globe that The Economist publishes a global ranking of currencies' purchasing power based on the prices charged at the local McDonald’s, called the Big Mac Index (巨无霸指数).That’s not to say that every nation carries the same menu items: choices vary widely depending on location. Some Asian locations serve fried shrimp in a Big Mac roll, while McDonald’s in India doesn’t serve beef at all, relying instead on burgers made from vegetables, rice and beans. Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he moves to town. Many see McDonald's as a symbol of American economic and cultural chauvinism (沙文主义), and European nations in particular have viewed American-style fast food as an insult to their national food. A French farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a group of people destroyed a McDonald's under construction to protest globalization and "bad food." The next year, a bomb exploded in a French McDonald’s, killing a 27-year-old employee. He was born in 1888 in an Indian Territory(印第安人保护区)that is now Oklahoma. Like most Native American children then, he liked to fish, hunt, swim, and play games outdoors. (76)He was healthy and strong, but he had very little formal education. In 1950, Jim Thorpe was named the greatest American football player. He was also an Olympic gold medal winner. But Thorpe had many tragedies in his life.Jim had a twin brother who died when he was nine years old. By the time he was 16, his mother and father were also dead. Jim then went to a special school in Pennsylvania for Native American children. There, he learned to read and write and also began to play sports. Jim was poor, so he left school for two years to earn some money. During this time, he played on a baseball team. (77) The team paid him only $15 a week. Soon he returned to school to complete his education. Jim was a star athlete(运动员) in several sports, including baseball, running and football. He won many awards for his athletic ability, mainly for football. In many games, he scored all or most of the points for his team.In 1912, when Jim Thorpe was 24 years old, he became part of the U. S Olympic team. He competed in two very difficult events: the pentathlon and the decathlon. Both require great ability and strength. The pentathlon has five track and field events, including the long jump and the 1,500-meter race. The decathlon hasten track and field and filed events, with running, jumping, and throwing contests.People thought it was impossible for an athlete to competein both the pentathlon and the decathlon. All one has to do is walk by almost any nice gym and notice all the healthy, sweating, “skinny”members. Sometimes they stare at those of us who are , well, zaftig. It is easy to see the judgment behind their eyes. Who wants to put up with that? Many people are self-conscious of their bodies and feel isolated when joining workout classes or while exercising, especially if they are larger than most of the others in the group. Now the fitness industry is finally paying attention. Popular gyms are catering(迎合) to overweight and weight conscious customers by dedicating areas where the “skinny”people are not allowed. There are even gyms or programs that require members to be at least 50 pounds overweight to participate.Trainers recommended functional fitness as a practical goal, rather than six-pack abs(六块腹肌). (79)They often use text messages to stay in touch with customers.Often at these specialized gyms, the trainers are overweight themselves, or working on their own weight goals, and this can help those people with anxiety caused by poor body image. The equipment has been designed for use by larger people. Wider seats, more cushioning, no mirrors, and tinted(有色的) windows for privacy, are all important changes.(80) Hopefully these types of gyms will successfully grow innumbers in the future. The idea is a very simple and potentially popular one. If it helps those of us who are bigger exercise more and improve our fitness level, it’s a step in the right direction.11. The word zaftig in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.A. fatB. healthyC. friendlyD. polite12. The time for this part is 120 minutes.1.Improved human well-being is one of the greatest triumphs of the modern era. The age of plenty has also led to an unexpected global health crisis: 2 billion people are either overweight or obese. Developed countries have been especially susceptible to unhealthy weight gain. However, developing countries are now facing a similar crisis. Obesity rates have peaked in high income countries but are accelerating elsewhere. The combined findings of the World Health Organization and the World Bank showed that in 2016 Asia was home to half the world’s overweight children. One quarter were in Africa. This crisis will test the political resolve of governments that have focused on ending hunger. These governments must understand that the factors making cities convenient and productive also make their residents prone to obesity. Urbanites enjoy a variety of foods. International fast food chains are flourishing in developing countries. The health risks of such diets are compounded by the sedentary lifestyles of urban dwellers. People’s leisure time is also being occupied by television, movies, and video games in a growing number of households. The alarming implication of these trends is that developing countries may become sick before they get rich. That sickness may, in turn, cripple health systems. The yearly healthcare costs in Southeast Asia from obesity-related complications like diabetes and cardiovascular disease are already as high as $10 billion. Such diseases are an added burden on countries already struggling to manage primary health care needs. Policies related to taxation, urban design, and education may help control obesity at a lower cost than eventual medical treatment for an increasingly overweight population. Some governments have already intervened to control obesity by implementing taxation on unhealthy foods and drinks. Thailand, Brunei, and Singapore have adopted the soda tax. South Africa is likely to introduce a sugar tax beginning in April 2018. The city of Berkeley in California recognizes that taxes alone are not enough to address obesity. The city’s sugar tax revenues are used to support child nutrition and community health programs. This underscores the importance of education. There is also promise in many initiatives. Urban design holds significant power to reshape lifestyles and public health. Improving the attractiveness of public space can draw residents out of their cars and living rooms. A recent study of urban neighborhoods in Shanghai and Hangzhou found that residents living in more walkable neighborhoods enjoy better health than residents who lived in less walkable neighborhoods in urban China. Finally, healthier lifestyles begin in grocery store aisles. Governments should encourage tighter connections between agricultural production systems, urban grocers and food vendors. Such initiatives can also help urban residents better understand how food is sourced. This raises awareness about the relationship between natural foodsand healthy lifestyles. Combining controls on unhealthy foods with policies that encourage healthy eating and active lifestyles can reduce obesity rates. Improving public health is an important policy developing countries should take from both an economic and social point of view. To quote the recent Global Nutrition Report, reducing obesity will boost global development.正确答案:人类健康的改善是当今时代最伟大的成就之一。
