Reading ComprehensionThere are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by 5 questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should read them carefully and decide on the best answer, then mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Passage 1If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington, concluded from other men's work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mentalabilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in summer.Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.to the passage, man's intelligence __c. changes with the seasons_______.the same through the year from day to daywith the seasons from year to yearHuntington decided that climate and temperature have ___ B. some effect on most people's intelligence ______.A. a great effect on everyone's intelligenceB. some effect on most people's intelligenceC. some effect on a few people's intelligenceD. no effect on most people's intelligenceHuntington's conclusion was based on __results of research done by himself and other scientists among peoples in different .A.variations of his own mental abilities fromseason to seasonB.the results of research done by himself andother scientists among peoples in differentclimates.C.detailed records of temperature changes indifferent placesD.detailed records of different ways of thinkingamong peoples in different climatesdoes the author say summer is a good time to take a long vocation from thinking?B.Because people tend to be less creative during summerA.Because a long vocation in summer helps toimprove people's mental power.B.Because people tend to be less creative duringsummer.C.Because summer is a good time for outdooractivities.D.Because mental exertion in the summer heattaxes too much of people's energy.central idea of this passage is __ A. man's mental abilities change from season to season_____.A.man's mental abilities change from season toseasonB.man's intelligence varies from place to placeC.man should take a long vacation in summerD.if you want to do creative thinking, go to acool placePassage 2When I was about six years old, my mother came home one day and found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighborhood ---- all of them too young to walk ---- and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano, she began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighborhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a verylucrative occupation. My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lesson did not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes, I asked him why, and when he replied "Because it is beautiful," I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not stifled. I believed that whatever the child is going to do in life should be begun when it is very young. I wonder how many parents realize that by the so-called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and depriving them of any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.her mother came home one day, the narrator of the story __A. was teaching half a dozen babies to dance __.A.was teaching half a dozen babies to danceB.was teaching half a dozen babies to walkC.was collecting babies of the neighborhoodD.was making babies of the neighborhood sitbefore her on the floorattitude of the narrator's mother toward her school of dance was one of _ C. support .A. despiseB. contemptC.support D. indifferencenarrator thought that ballet was ____B. stiff, ugly and unnatural ______.A. the most graceful danceB. stiff, ugly and unnaturalC. a dance that she had dreamed ofD. an invisible world into which she guessed shemight enterto the narrator, she owed her success in art to __ support of her understanding and adventurous mother .A.the good education her parents gave herB.the support of her understanding andadventurous motherC.her inborn talentD.her ballet teachercentral idea of the passage is that ___A. parents should try to discover the natural gift in their children and help to develop it while they are young ____.A.parents should try to discover the natural gift intheir children and help to develop it while theyare youngB.the so-called good education parents give theirchildren only drives them into thecommonplace and deprives them of any chanceof doing anything originalC.mothers should be heroic and adventurousD.ballet is no good as a form of dancePassage 3Is vitamin E a cure for baldnessWill it cure acne(痤疮)Can it relieve the pain of arthritis or prevent ulcers These are only a few of the uses some people claim for vitamin E,but for many years no scientific proof has been possible for any of these claims.Vitamin E is not a rare substance by any means; it is present in vegetable oils and in grains, but in most diets the main source of vitamin E is leafy vegetables. Some vitamin E is lost in the cooking process, but not a really significant amount; a good balanced diet will, according to critics of “vitamin medicine”, supply all the vitamin E anyone needs. In animals, shortage of vitamin E causes sudden and obvious changes. Chickens deprived of vitamin E develop muscular weakness. Calves whose diets contain inadequate amounts of vitamin E develop heart disease. Rats who are deprived of vitamin E develop liver degeneration. Nor do they grow as quickly as healthy rats. But in humans, with one exception, there are no symptoms of any kind associated with a vitamin E deficiency. Premature infants who lack proper amounts of vitamin E sometimes develop anemia(贫血)or skin rashes, but any symptoms caused by this deficiency in adult humans are either too insignificant to appear in normal tests or are simply nonexistent. A study in Elgin, Illinois, followed subjects maintained on low vitamin E diets for six years and could discover no effects of the diet on the subjects at all. Some studies, such as a study performed by three Canadian doctors in the late 1940s, have found vitamin E helpful in treating specific diseases, such as angina pectoris, a type of heart disease. But other studies have tried to duplicate these findings and failed. So there is no absolutely undeniable evidence that vitamin E will prevent or cure disease.Claims for the cosmetic use of vitamin E continue to multiply, however. Creams and ointments containing vitamin E appear on the market almost daily, to help remove skin blemishes(瑕疵), to soften dry skin, to control skin wrinkles. Vitamin E is even used in deodorants(除臭剂). Vitamin E itself is a preservative, an antioxidant, so the producers’ thinking is that vitamin E will prevent odor by preventing bacteria from oxidizing perspiration. But no study or medical proof ever appeared to prove any of these cosmetic claims completely. You can add vitamin E pills to your morning routine if you like, but unfortunately no one has ever been able to demonstrate conclusively any reason why you should.1. The main idea of this passage is that _ C. most of the medical and cosmetic claims about vitamin E are not supported by research ____.A.taken as a preventive measure againstdisease, vitamin E can be harmfulB.although vitamin E has not been provedeffective in fighting disease, it does havesome cosmetic valueC.most of the medical and cosmetic claimsabout vitamin E are not supported byresearchD.advertisements are attempting to misleadthe public with their claims about vitamin 2. In animals, vitamin E deficiency is associatedwith all of the following disorders except _ B.diabetes___.A. heart diseaseB. diabetesC. liverdegeneration D. muscular weakness3. Which of the following conclusions is NOT supported by the passage? C. Vitamin E is more useful cosmetically than medicallyA.Vitamin E deficiency is less harmful tohumans than to other animal.B.Vitamin E may be helpful in treatingangina pectoris.C.Vitamin E is more useful cosmetically thanmedically.D.Vitamin E is fairly abundant in a balanceddiet.4. The passage suggests that _ B. the public regards vitamin E as a wonder drug____.A.little research has been done to protectconsumersB.the public regards vitamin E as a wonderdrugC.advertising is basically a business ofdeceptionD.some research that has been reported hasbeen proved false5. As used in this passage, the word “degeneration” means __ B. deterioration ____.A. ailmentB. deteriorationC. devianceD. maturationPassage 4A summary of the physical and chemical nature of life must begin, not on the Earth, but in the Sun; in fact, at the Sun’s very center. It is here that is to be found the source of the energy that the Sun constantly pours out into space as light and heat. This energy is liberated at the center of the Sun as billions upon billions of nuclei of hydrogen atoms collide with each other and fuse together to form nuclei of helium, and, in doing so, release some of the energy that is stored in the nuclei of atoms. The output of light and heat of the Sun requires that some 600 million tons of hydrogen be converted into helium in the Sun every second. This the Sun has been doing for several thousands of millions of years. The nuclear energy is released at the Sun’s center as high-energy gamma radiation, a form of electromagnetic radiation like light and radio waves, only very much shorter wavelength. This gamma radiation is absorbed by atoms inside the Sun, to be remitted at slightly longer wavelengths. This radiation, in its turn, is absorbed and remitted. As the energy filters through the layers of the solar interior, it passes through the X-ray part of the spectrum, eventually becoming light. At this stage, it has reached what we can do to the solar surface, and can escape into space, without being absorbed further by solar atoms. A very small fraction of the Sun’s light and heat is emitted in such directions that, after passing unhindered through interplanetary space, it hits the Earth. (268 words) does the passage mainly discuss?production of solar light and heat. physical and chemical nature of life.conversion of hydrogen to helium. in the X-ray part of the spectrum.to the passage, energy is released in the Sun when_____.atoms bind with each other. radiation escapes from the spectrum.is absorbed by helium. of hydrogen atoms collide.passage indicates that, in comparison to radio waves, gamma wave_____.A. are not as long.B. producelouder sound.C. are less magnetic.D. do notform in the Sun’s centre.to the passage, through which of the following is the energy released in the Sun pass before it becomes light?A. Electromagnetic space.B. Thesolar surface.C. The X-ray part of the spectrum.D.Interplanetary space.can be inferred from the passage that the Sun’s light travels _____.solid objects in space. many different directions.。

S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush --- often under pressure. City people appear always to hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands (任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country.Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If you don’t, waiters will hurry you.You also find drivers will be abrupt and that people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don’t take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else “wasting”it beyond a certain courtesy point. The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us have what might be called “a short fuse.” We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some return be this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked up[on differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life. Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, they will miss the ritual socializing that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee they may be traditional in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a cafe or coffeehouse. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courteous. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly.51. Which of the following statements is wrong? __________A. Americans seem to be always under pressure.B. Americans attach less importance to patience.C. Americans don’t care much about ritual socializing.D. Americans are impolite to their business colleagues.52. In the fourth paragraph, “a high priority” means __________.A. a less important thingB. a first concernC. a good businessD. an attractive gift53. Americans evaluate a business colleague __________.A. through social courtesyB. through prolonged business talksC. by establishing business relationsD. by learning about their past performance54. This passage mainly talks about __________.A. how Americans treasure their timeB. how busy Americans are every dayC. how Americans do business with foreignersD. what American way of life is like55. We can infer from the passage that the author’s tone in writing is __________.A. criticalB. ironicalC. appreciativeD. objectivePassage 2Britain and France are separated by the English Channel, a body of water that can be crossed in as few as 20 minutes. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart.Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war --- which British prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac’s body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug, Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn’t stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France’s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain’s close links with the US.Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of “doubtful friendship”, they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here’s one: What’s the best thing about Britain’s relationship with France? The English Channel.56. For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is __________.A. friendlyB. impoliteC. brotherlyD. a mixture of love and hate57. The war in Iraq does __________ to the relationship between France and Britain.A. goodB. harmC. neither good nor harmD. both good and harm58. The British are not so friendly to __________ and the French are not so friendly to __________.A. Germany; AmericaB. America; GermanyC. Germany; GermanyD. America; America59. __________ are more interested in having holidays in __________.A. American people; BritainB. British people; GermanyC. French people; BritainD. British people; France60. What does the last sentence mean? __________A. As long as the English Channel exists, no further disagreement will form between France and Britain.B. The English Channel can prevent anything unfriendly happening in both France and Britain.C. France and Britain are near neighbors, and this will help balance the relationship between them.D. The English Channel is the largest enemy between France and Britain5. TranslationEnglish to Chinese:61. You should spend a reasonable time for better relaxing and exercising.62. I can't wait for us to smile at each other and say good morning. When you arrive only seconds before the lecture commences, I'm indifferent to anything but your arrival. Instead of reviewing my lesson, I anticipate your footsteps and listen for your voice. Today is one of your late days, but I don't mind because after a month of denying the impulse to ask you out, today I'm feeling bold. Today I'm inclined to act.2 I know dating has changed dramatically in recent years, and for many women, asking men out isn't daring. But because of my traditional upbringing, the simple notion of asking you out seems abnormal. Growing up, I heard the clear message: Men must take the initiative and make contact. They should call, ask and pay for the date. However, during my years at the university, I've learned otherwise. Many of my women friends have put a spark in their social lives by taking the initiative with men. My girlfriends reckon that it's essential for women to participate more actively in the dating process. "I can't be idle and wait," my former roommate once said. "Hard as it is, if I want to date, I have to ask guys out!"”3 More women are taking the initiative and invite men out, and many men say they view this new phenomenon with approval. They are relieved that dating no longer solely depends on their willingness and courage to take the first step. Then why am I so nervous?4 I tell myself to relax since dating is more casual today. A college date means anything from studying together to simply having leisure time together like watching a film. Most of my peers prefer casual dating because it's cheaper and comfortable. Students have fewer anxiety attacks when they ask somebody to play tennis than when they plan a formal occasion.5 As an added bonus, casual dating also encourages people to forge healthy friendships prior to starting romantic relationships. Young people can relax and get to know each other more easily this way. For example, my roommate and her boyfriend were friends for four months before their chemistry clicked. They went out often with a bunch of mutual friends. They alternated paying the dinner check. "He was like any other friend," my roommate said laughing. Another friend of mine believes casual dating improves people's social lives, allowing them to circulate in wider social circles. When she wants to let a guy know she is interested, she'll say, "Hey, let's go get a yogurt." or "How about a cup of tea?"6 Who pays for it? It's not as easy as it used to be because the traditional rules of courtship are undergoing major changes. Preliminary statistics also affirm this. A plurality of young men say women should chip in and help pay after a few dates. An almost equal percentage of women offer to pay for themselves, even on a first date. But widespread confusion still exists. The new rules have yet to be clarified.7 My own past dates have taught me some things. Either "going Dutch" or allowing my date to pay can be a definite challenge. One date whipped out his wallet on our first date before I could suggest otherwise. During an after-dinner walk, he proceeded to tell me he was romantically interested in me. After I explained I was more interested in friendship, he seemed unhappy. He explained that since I'd accepted his paying for my dinner, he'd assumed I was interested in romance. He seemed angry with himself for treating me. I regretted allowing him to.8 Another date frowned when I hastily opened my purse, pulled out my wallet, and offered to go Dutch. I asked politely, "How much do I owe you?" He said, "Uh, uh, you really don't owe me anything, but if you insist …" He looked exceedingly embarrassed. To him, my gestur e of offering to pay had conveyed a message of rejection.9 Everyone seems confused as they try to clarify the new rules of dating. Who should ask whom out? Who should pay and when? So, while I do think dressing up and going out on traditional, formal dates is a blast, I thrive on casual dating because it has brought a valuable dimension to my social life. With casual dating, there's less pressure and more equality. I can give roses as well as receive them! Casual dating is worthwhile because it works.10 So here I am, waiting. No magic formula guarantees he will say "yes". I just have to relax, be myself and ask him out in a no-nonsense manner.11 He finally arrives. Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are many passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1The fridge is considered a necessity. It has been so since the 1960s when packaged food first appeared with the label: “store in the refrigerator”.In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily. The milkman came daily, the grocer, the butcher, the baker, and the ice-cream man delivered two or three times a week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus (剩余的) bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten food. Thirty years on, food deliveries have ceased; fresh vegetables are almost unobtainable in the country. The invention of the fridge contributed comparatively little to the art of food preservation. A vast way of well-tried techniques already existed--- natural cooling, drying, smoking, salting, sugaring, bottling……What refrigeration did promote was marketing --- marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the globe in search of a good price.Consequently, most of the world’s fridges are to be found, not in the tropics where they might prove useful, but in the wealthy countries with mild temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary. Every winter, millions of fridges hum away (不断地嗡嗡作响) continuously, and at vast expense, busily maintain an artificially-cooled space inside and artificially-heated house---while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge. The fridge’s effect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cabinet (橱柜) and turn off your fridge next winter. You may miss the hamburgers, but at least you’ll get rid of that terrible hum.1.The statement “In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily.”(Para. 2)suggest that __________.A.the author was well-fed and healthy even without a fridge in his fifties.B.the author was not accustomed to using fridges even in his fifties.C.there was no fridge in the author’s home in the 1950s.D.the fridge was in its early stage of development in the 1950s.2.Why does the author say that nothing was wasted before the invention of fridges?A.People would not buy more food than was necessary.B.Food was delivered to people two or three times a week.C.Food was sold fresh and did not get rotten easily.D.People had effective ways to preserve their food.3.Who benefited the least from fridges according to the author?A.InventorsB.ConsumersC.ManufacturersD.Traveling salesmen (巡回推销员)4.Which of the following phrases in Para 5 indicates the fridge’s negative effect on theenvironment?A.“Hum away continuously”.B.“Climatically almost unnecessary”.C.“Artificially-cooled space”.D.“With mild temperatures”.5.What is the author’s overall attitude toward fridges?A. NeutralB. CriticalC. Objective D compromisingPassage 2Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes(施加)a constant pressure and strain (负担)of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The student organizations are effective in ensuring that the students observe university regulations. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system doesinvolve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.1. Normally an American university student would attend ________ courses for a degree.A. 36B. 20C. 12D. 152. According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed _________.A. to live in a different universityB. to take a particular course in a different universityC. to live at home and drive to classesD. to get two degrees from two different universities3. American university students are usually under pressure of work because _________.A. they want to run for positions of authorityB. they are heavily involved in student affairsC. they have to observe university disciplineD. their academic performance will affect their future careers4. Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizations probably because______.A. they hate the constant pressure and strain of their studyB. they will then be able to stay longer in the universityC. such positions may help them get better jobsD. such positions are usually well paid5. The student organizations seem to be effective in ________.A. dealing with the academic affairs of the universityB. ensuring that the students observe university regulationsC. evaluating students’ performance by bringing them before a courtD. keeping up the students’ enthusiasm for social activitiesPassage 3The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon(结肠). In some cultures people are prone to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives(添加剂), caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and poultry and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.1. How has science done harm to mankind?A. Because of science, disease caused by polluted food has been virtually done away with.B. It has caused a lack of information, concerning the value of food.C. As a result of scientific development, some potentially harmful substances have been addedto our food.D. The scientists have preserved the color of meats, but not of vegetables.2. What are nitrates used for?A. They preserve flavor in packaged foods.B. They preserve the color of meats.C. They are the objects of research.D. They cause the animals to become fatter.3. The word carcinogenic means most nearly the same as __________.A. trouble-makingB. color-retainingC. money-makingD. cancer-causing4. What does FDA mean as an organization?A. Food Direct AdditivesB. Final Difficult AnalysisC. Food and Drug AdministrationD. Federal Dairy Additives5. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Drugs are always given to animals for medical reasons.B. Some additives in our food are added to the food itself and some are given to the livinganimals.C. Researchers have known about the potential dangers of food additives for a long time.D. Food may cause forty percent of cancer in the world.Passage 4Books which give instructions on how to do things are very popular in the United States today. Thousands of books like this begin with titles that start with the words “how to”. Many of “how to” books give advice on careers. They tell you how to choose a career and how to succeed in it. If you fail, however, you can buy a book called How to Turn Failure into Success. If you would like to become very rich, you can buy the book How to Make a Million. If you never make any money at all, you need a book called How to Live on Nothing. One of the most popular types of books is one that helps you with personal problems. If you are unhappy with your life, you can read How to Love Every Minute of Your Life. If you are tired of books on happiness, you may prefer a book called How to Make Yourself Sad. Many of these books help people use their free time better. Some people want books which will give them useful information about sports, hobbies, and travel. Other people use their free time to make repairs and improvements on their homes. They like books which give step-by-step instructions on how to repair things like electrical wiring, or how to redecorate or enlarge a house. Why have “how to”books become so popular? Probably because life has become so complex. Today people have far more free time to use, more choices to make, and more problems to solve. “How to” books help people deal with modern life.1. When one wants to change his job from one type to another, he probably needs to read___________.A. How to Succeed at a JobB. How to Turn Failure into SuccessC. How to Choose a CareerD. How to Be a Successful Worker2. If you never make enough to feed yourself at all, you can buy a book with the title___________.A. How to Make Yourself HappyB. How to Live on NothingC. How to make your house larger.D. How to make your room look more beautiful.4. Why have “how to” books become so popular? Probably because ___________.A. life has become so difficultB. people haven’t much free time to useC. people have more money on booksD. people want to deal with all sorts of problems well5. This passage makes you think that ___________.A. many “how to” books are of value and helpB. it’s a waste of time to read “how to” booksC. there’s no need to publish so many “how to” booksD. people seem to be tired of reading “how to” booksPassage 5Experts have long thought that depression could be bad for your heart. A new study demonstrates just how dangerous it can be. Brenda Penninx, a gerontologist(老年病学家)at Wake Forest University, North Caroline, and her colleagues followed 2847 people over the age of 55 —both with and without heart disease —for four years in order to trace the effects of depression. In the end, they found that people with major depression were at least three times as likely to die of heart disease as were patients who weren’t depressed. Even subjects with mild depression experienced a fatality rate that was 50 percent higher than normal.Brenda Penninx isn’t sure exactly what the connection between heart disease and depression is, but since depression can raise stress, and stress triggers an outpouring of the hormone cortisol (荷尔蒙肾上腺皮质素), and this could cause heart rate and blood pressure to rise.Other factors could also play a part: Depressed people are less likely to do physical exercise or eat right than those who do not suffer from the malady. “Depression deserves a lot more attention than it usually gets,” Penninx warns. “It’s a huge risk factor, so it’s really crucial to take care of your emotions.”1. Why did Brenda Penninx and her colleagues follow 2847 over 55 years old?A. Because they wanted to know their physical conditions.B. Because the people all had heart disease.C. Because they wanted to know how depression affect people hearts.D. Because 50% of the people died of heart disease.2. Which of the following statements is true?A. Depression would cause pressure.B. Depression would cause blood pressure to go down.C. Depression had definite connection with heart disease.D. Mild depression is not at all harmful.3. What does “malady” mean in the passage?A. Heart disease.B. Depression.C. Blood pressure.D. Stress.4. What did we usually do concerning depression?A. We didn’t pay much attention to it.B. We paid too much attention to it.C. We tried to avoid it.D. We never ignored it.5. What is the proper title of the passage?A. Heart Disease.B. A Study on One’s Heart.C. Depression and Fatality Rate.D. Depression Hurts the Heart.Passage 6The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences(后果)may be. In the highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured good. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.1. A small population may mean ___________ .A. higher productivity, but a lower average incomeB. lower productivity, but a higher average incomeC. lower productivity, and a lower average incomeD. higher productivity, and a higher average income2. According the passage, a large population will provide a chance for developing ___________ .A. agricultureB. transport systemC. industryD. national economy3. In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if the birth rate ___________ .A. goes upB. is decreasingC. remains stableD. is out of control4. According to the passage slowly rising birthrate perhaps is good for ___________ .A. a developed nationB. a developing nationC. every nation with a big populationD. every nation with a small population5. It is no easy job to carry out a general plan for birth control throughout the world because___________ .A. there are too many underdeveloped countries in the worldB. underdeveloped countries have low level of industrial developmentC. different governments have different views of the questionD. even developed countries may have complex problemsPassage 7In 99 cases out of 100, insomnia(失眠)is caused by a disturbance of the natural sleep rhythm. The reasons why the rhythm has been disturbed are many and they range from drugs that are being taken to treat a separate medical condition to anxiety. A sudden change in lifestyle or climate could do it, or just that you’ve fallen into the habit of dozing off(打瞌睡)in front of the television.Certainly the body must have enough sleep. Tests that deprived people of sleep have proved lack of it can cause fairly rapid physical and mental deterioration(恶化). But on the other hand, it doesn’t need too much. So if you’re sleeping in front of the TV, you won’t sleep soundly at night. Similarly, if you’re holidaying in Spain, and spending your days sleeping on the beach, chances are that you’ll be wide awake at bedtime.Of course, the problem for my summer insomniacs is that, despite a strong urge to put their heads down on their desks in the afternoons, they aren’t getting any extra sleep to compensate for their wakeful nights. For the worst sufferers I sometimes prescribe(开药方)a mild sleeping pill which, after a few nights, reestablishes the body’s natural sleep rhythm, conditioning it to accept the heat.1. From the passage, insomnia results from __________.A. the interrupting of the ordinary sleep patternB. being unable to sleepC. keeping awake at nightD. drugs to treat a special disease2. Lack of sleep will lead to __________.A. a sudden change in lifestyleB. a good condition in bodyC. the habit of being sleep in front of the televisionD. a quick drop in both body and mind condition3. A mild sleeping pill can help a person well __________.A. spend time sleepingB. recover their normal sleepC. keep awake at nightD. compensate for their missing sleep4. The problem for the author’s summer insomniacs is that they __________.A. can’t make up for the sleepless nightsB. sleep in the afternoonsC. can have extra sleep at nightD. can never sleep well5. It can be inferred that the writer is a __________.A. singerB. suffererC. doctorD. touristPassage 8Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completes a university degree or diploma course could find a good career quite easily. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs.Job seekers first have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relativ e importance to themselves of such matters as money, security, leadership and caring for others. The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. After studying all the various options, they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various careers.Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling errors. When graduates are asked to attend for interview, they should prepare properly be finding out all they can about the prospective employer. Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also obviously important. Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer. There will always be good career opportunities for people with ability, skills and determination; the secret to securing a good job to be one of them.1. In Para. 1, the sentence “… those days are gone, even in Hong Kong…” suggest that ______.A. in the past, finding a good career was easier in Hong Kong than elsewhereB. nowadays, everyone in Hong Kong has an equal chance of finding a good careerC. it used to be harder to find a good job in Hong Kong than in other countries.。

大学英语(三)综合复习资料I. Reading ComprehensionPassage 1I arrived in the United States on February 6,1966, but I remember my first day here very clearly. My friend was waiting for me when my plane landed at Kennedy Airport at three o’clock in the afternoon. The weather was very cold and it was snowing, but I was too excited to mind. From the airport, my friend and I took a taxi to my hotel. On the way, I saw the skyline of Manhattan for the first time and I stared in astonishment at the famous skyscrapers and their man-made beauty. My friend helped me unpack at the hotel and then left me because he had to go back to work. He promised to return the next day.Shortly after my friend had left, I went to a restaurant near the hotel to get something to eat. Because I c ouldn’t speak a word of English, I couldn’t tell the waiter what I wanted. I was very upset and started to make some gestures, but the waiter didn’t understand me. Finally, I ordered the same thing the man at the next table was eating. After dinner, I started to walk along Broadway until I came to Times Square with its movie theatres, neon lights, and huge crowds of people. I did not feel tired, so I continued to walk around the city. I wanted to see everything on my first day. I knew it was impossible, but I wanted to try. When I returned to the hotel, I was exhausted, but I couldn’t sleep because I kept hearing the fire and police sirens during the night. I lay awake and thought about New York. It was a very big and interesting city with many tall buildings and big cars, and full of noise and busy people. I also decided right then that I had to learn to speak English.1.February 6,1966 a day unforgettable to the writer because _______.A. it was his first day in New YorkB. it was very clear that dayC. that day he took a plane and landed at Kennedy AirportD. it was snowing and cold that day2.On the way to his hotel, the writer ______.A. was silent all the timeB. kept talking to his friendC. looked out of the window with great interestD. showed his friend something he brought with him3. And one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today as it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of misfortune or suffering. It always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting us in age.A good book is often the best container of a life, containing the best that life could think out, for the world of a man’s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words and golden thoughts, which, remembered and cared about, become our lasting companions and comforters.Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The great and good do not die even in this world. Well preserved in the books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which one still listens. Hence we ever remain under the influence of the great men of the past. The imperial intellects of the worlds are as much alive now as they were ages ago.6. The relationship between a man’s friends and his books is that _______.A. his books are as good as his friendsB. his books are better than his friendsC. his books are not as good as his friendsD. his books are worse than his friends7. The mystery of the homing pigeon is on how it navigates and how it finds home. We now know that there are two ways that pigeons tell directions. First, they use the sun. Just getting rough directions from the sun is easy. However, getting accurate directions from the sun takes more care. To tell direction accurately from the sun, one needs to know the exact time. All plants and animals seem to have built-in clocks. Usually these biological clocks are not quite exact in measuring time. However, they work pretty well, because they are “reset” every day, maybe when the sun gets up.Do pigeons use their biological clocks to help them find direction from the sun? We can experiment to find out. We can keep pigeons in a room lighted only by lamps. And we can time the lighting to make their artificial “days” start at some different time from the real outside day. After a while we have shifted their clocks. Now we take them far away from home and let them go on a sunny day. Most of them start out as if they know just which way to go, but choose a wrong direction. They have picked a direction that would be correct for the position of the sun and the time of day according to their shifted clocks. The above experiment shows that homing pigeons can tell directions by the sun. What happens when the sky is darkly overcast by clouds and no one can see where the sun is? The pigeons still find their way home. So it seems that pigeons also have some extra sense of direction from the earth’s magnetic field when they cannot see the sun.11.Pigeons have been used as messengers, for they have special ability ______.A. to send lettersB. to find homeC. to carry food for menD. to lead the way for people12.The secret of the homing pigeons is ______.A. how they find foodB. how they find homeC. how they take a letterD. how they take care of children13.All plants and animals reset their biological clocks when ______.A. the sun risesB. the sun setsC. the moon risesD. the moon sets14.The experiment tells us that the pigeons fly ______ because of the shifted biological clocks.A. in a wrong directionB. in a correct directionC. in all directionsD. in a circle15. Pigeons have ______ to tell the direction when it is cloudy by using the earth’s magnetic field.A. sharp eyesB. sensitive hearingC. sense of directionD. brain wavesPassage 4My surname is “Sun”, which happens to be spelt exactly like the English word “Sun”. It interested quite a few people on my way to London. At London Airport a tall policeman took my passport to check the visa.“Your name is S, U, N—Sun,” he pronounced it just as any other Englishman would. “You are wanted, young man!”Suddenly he took hold of my arm, and looked at me seriously. It was a great shock to me, for I knew if a person is wanted by the police, he must have broken the law in some way. I protested: “What are you doing? Why should I be wanted? I’ve never done any harm to anybody.”“Yes, you are wanted—there’s no doubt about it.” He tightened his grip.“Is there anything wrong wi th my passport or the entry visa? Do I have to go back to China?”“Go back? Now that you are here, we’ll never let you run away.”“But what’s happened? What have I done?”“Don’t you know yourself?” he looked as if he was really surprised.“Of course no t. Before you arrest me, you must let me know exactly how I happened to have broken the law!”It was not until then that a smile appeared on his face. He let go my arm and said: “It’s very simple, Mr. Sun. England is a country with little sunshine. Since your name is Sun,you are wanted here. Now that you’ve come, of course we don’t want you to go away. But I have to give back your passport all the same. Here you are.”So this was English humor, I thought, as I wiped the sweat on my forehead.16. The auth or’s surname is the same as the English word “Sun” in ______.A. pronunciationB. spellingC. meaningD. both B and C17. In London it is usually ______.A. windyB. snowyC. cloudyD. sunny18. For the English humor the author felt ______.A. happyB. surprisedC. angryD. annoyedPassage 5Jobs and work do much more than most of us realize to provide happiness. We are all used to thinking that work provides the material things of life — the goods and services that make possible our modern civilization. But we are much less conscious of the extent to which work provides the more important psychological well-being that can make the difference between a full and an empty life.Historically, work has been associated with slavery and sin and punishment. And in our own day we are used to hearing the traditio nal complaints: “I can’t wait for my vacation,” or “I wish I could stay at home today.” Against this background, it may come as a surprise to learn that not only psychologists but also other behavioral scientists have come to accept the positive contributi on of work to the individual’s happiness and sense of personal achievement. Work is more than a necessity for most human beings; it is the focus of their lives, the source of their identity and creativity.Rather than a punishment or a burden, work is the opportunity to realize one’s potential. For large numbers of people, the absence of their work is harmful to their health. Large numbers of people regularly get headaches and other illnesses on weekends when they don’t have their jobs to go to. It has bee n observed that unemployment brings enormous psychological troubles besides the financial pressure.21. According to the author, ______ is the most important thing that work can bring to us.A. goodsB. servicesC. mental healthD. physical health22. In the past, work was NOT looked on as ______.A. slaveryB. punishmentC. sinD. happiness23. According to the passage, work provides us with all the following EXCEPT ______.A. illnessB. happinessC. personal achievementD. financial benefits24. Many people regularly have headaches when they have ______.A. too much work to doB. too many guests to attend toC. no work to doD. no money to earn from work25. Everyone needs ______.A. a sense of pride as a top employeeB. a sense of accomplishmentC. a punishment in the form of workD. a hard discipline in workPassage 6My grandparents believed you were either honest or you weren’t. There was no in-between. They had a simple motto hanging on their living-room wall: “Life is like afield of newly fallen snow; where I choose to walk every step will show.”Honesty is something we must demand of ourselves. A good test for this value is to look at whether you always give others credit that is rightfully theirs, whether you are not afraid of those who might have a better idea or who might even be smarter than you are.David Ogilvy, founder of the advertising firm Ogilvy & Mather, made this point clear to his newly appointed office heads by sending each a set of dolls with five progressively smaller figures inside. His message was contained in the smallest doll: “If each of us hires people who are smaller than we are, we shall become a company of dwarfs. But if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are, Ogilvy & Mather will become a company of giants.” And that is precisely what the company became— one of the largest and most respected advertising organizations in the world. The other test for the value is: be honest and open about who you really are. People who lack real core values rely on external factors — their looks or social positions — in order to feel good about themselves. Inevitably they will do everything they can to preserve this mask, but they will do very little to develop their inner value and personal growth.Integrity means having a personal standard of morality and that is not relative to situation at hand. Integrity is an inner standard for judging your behavior. Integrity means you do what you do because it’s right and not just fashionable. It will t ake you forward into the 21st century without having to check your tracks in a rear view mirror. My grandparents taught me that.26. The author’s grandparents believed one was ______.A. honest as well as dishonestB. neither honest nor dishonestC. either honest or dishonestD. both honest and dishonest27.I n the set of dolls, the smallest one stands for ______.A. a giantB. a dwarfC. a tall manD. a baby28.M r. David Ogilvy was eager to hire the people who are ______.A. better and smarter than himselfB. worse and less smart than himselfC. as good and smart as himselfD. not so good and smart as himself29.P eople with real core values rely on ______.A. their looksB. their social positionsC. their familyD. their inner value30.T o seek integrity, you must do what is ______.A. rightB. fashionableC. beneficialD. profitablePassage 7Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the friendship for granted, we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends. Wh ile we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few — for example, the average among students is about 6 per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy between them and the reasons for their shared interest vary enormously. As we get to know people we take into account things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of prime importance, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a marked difference in age and background. Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, to have attitudes and interests in common — they often talk about“being on the same wavelength”. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to do friends favors and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and to tolerate differences of opinion. In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.31. According to the author,______.A.all those who get on well with each other are friendsB.friends are closer than people who just get on well with each otherC.everyone understands clearly how to make friendsD.every student has 6 friends32. When we make friends, we consider such things as age, race, and background, because______.A.it is not easy to have a friendly relationship with people when there is a markeddifference in age and backgroundB.the degree of friendship between two people and the reason for their shared interestcan vary greatlyC.friends need to know all these thingsD.these are the most important factors to make friends33. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends. The way people cling to the belief that fun-filled, painfree life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equated with happiness, then pain must be equated with unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: things that lead to happiness often involve some pain.Couples who choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they want, travel wherever they want and sleep as late as they want. Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or three-day vacation. But couples who decide not to have children never experience the pleasure of hugging them or tucking them into bed at night. They never know the joy of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations we can ever come to. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can really increase our happiness. It creates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those rich people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.The moment we understand that fun does not bring happiness, we begin to lead our lives differently. The effect can be, quite literally, life-transforming.36.F un activities can help us ______.A. to workB. to relaxC. to thinkD. to study37.T he positive effects of fun can last ______.A. for the last timeB. for a long timeC. for the time beingD. for the time to come38.T he idea that ______ prevents people from gaining real happiness.A. fun is happinessB. fun is not easy to getC. happiness is hard to getD. happiness and fun are different39.I t is very happy for parents to ______.A. stay up late with their childrenB. help their children do assignmentsC. watch their children grow upD. earn money for their children’s marriage40.Knowing the difference between happiness and fun can give us ______.A. more courage to face difficultiesB. more chances to reach our goalC. more money to buy what we wantD. more time to do what we should doPassage 9In the house where I grew up, we had a room we called the library. It wasn’t a real library, of course; it was just a small room with a television set. But there were bookshelves built into all four walls and hundreds of books surrounded us in that room. The books, collected by my parents and grandparents throughout their lifetime, were a part of my childhood. The stories of problems young people have with reading are not new, but the tendency seems to be worsening. Recently the Chancellor of the University of Illinois’s branch campus in Chicago said that 10 percent of the freshmen at his university could read no better than the average eighth grader and many had ranked in the top half of their high-school classes.Much of the problem is that we live in a passive age. To listen to a record album, to sit through a movie, to watch a television show —all requires nothing of the cultural consumer, except for his mere presence. To read a book, though, takes an act of will on the part of the consumer. He must really want to find out what is inside. He cannot just sit there; he must do something, even though the something is as simple an action as opening the book, closing the door and beginning to read.41. In the house where the author grew up, most of the space was taken up by ______.A. a television setB. booksC. furnitureD. toys42. ______ collected the books and passed on to me.A. my parents and grandparentsB. my parents and teachersC. my uncles and parentsD. my mother and grandparents43. Teachers and textbooks are not infallible. In fact, no one is. He told us not to let our minds go to sleep, and to speak up if we ever thought he or the textbook was wrong.Every class was an adventure with Mr. Whitson. I can still remember some science periods almost from beginning to end. One day he told us that his V olkswagen was a living organism. It took us two full days to put together a refutation he would accept. He didn’t let us off the hook until we had proved not only that we knew what an organism was, but also that we had the courage to stand up for the truth. We carried our brand-new skepticism into all our classes. This caused problems for the other teachers, who weren’t used to being challenged. Our history teacher would be lecturing about something, and then there would be clearing of the throat and someone would say “cattywampus”.If I am ever asked to propose a solution to the crisis in our schools, it will be Mr. Whitson. I haven’t made any great scientific discoveries, but Mr. Whitson’s class gave me and my classmates something just as important: the courage to look people in the eye and tell them they are wrong. He also showed us that you could have fun doing it.Not everyone sees the value in this.46.One day the students were required to prove that V olkswagen was not ______.A. a brand of carsB. a plantC. an organismD. an animal47.What lesson did the students learn from the two-day discussion in Mr. Whitson’s class?A.
