话题语篇专攻练26健康饮食(二)(建议用时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AHere’s an experiment: take a bite of whatever food you have nearby and listen to some music, something with high notes. Now, take another bite, but listen to something with low notes. Notice anything?Researchers at the University of Oxford have been looking for a link between sound and taste. They’ve found that higher-pitched music—think flutes—enhances the flavor of sweet or sour foods. Lower-pitched sounds, like tubas, increase the bitter flavors.Charles Spence is leading that study into what he and his team call“multi-sensory food perception”. Spence tells how taste is the sense that unifies all of the others.“Flavor is probably one of the most multi-sensory of our experiences. . . because it does involve ta ste and more smell than we realize, ”Spence says. “But all of the senses come together to give us that one unified experience of flavor. ”“Texture is one of the more clear ways sound plays into taste, ”Spence says. “Think of the crackling of chips or the fizzy sounds of a carbonated drink—sound plays a major role in our experience of those textures. ”“But the other place where sound affects taste, ”Spence says, “is in the environment; imagine listening to the sounds of the sea while you’re eating fish at a seaside restaurant. ”Spence’s team is currently working on what he calls“synesthetic sounds”. By asking tasters to match flavors with sounds, they discovered the connection between high-pitched sounds and sweets and low-pitched sounds and bitter tastes.“You can then start creating experiences where you play particular kinds of music or sounds cape to diners or to drinkers while they’re tasting, ”he says.“We’re able to show that we can change the experience in the mouth by about 5 or 10 percent. ”Anot her one of the projects Spence’s team has worked on was something called“sonic seasoning”. They’d take the results of taste tests involving a myriad of flavors to composers and sound designers, who’d then craft sound experiences to match those taste experiences.【文章大意】想提高你对食物的感觉吗? 那么去听听音乐吧。

话题语篇专攻练25健康饮食( 一)( 建议用时40 分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AIt has always been thought that alcohol causes people to put on weight because it contains a lot of sugar, but new research suggests a glass a day could form part of a diet. Looking at past studies they found that, while heavy drinkers do put onweight; those who drink in moderation can actually lose weight.A spokesman for the research team at Navarro University in Spain says, “Light to moderate alcohol intake, especially of wine, may b e more likely to protect against, rather than promote, weight gain. ”The International Scientific Forum on Alcoholresearch reviewed the findings and agreed with most of the conclusions, particularlythat data do not clearly indicate if moderate drinking increases weight.Boston Unive rsity ’s Dr. Harvey Finkel found that the biologic mechanisms( 生物学机制)relating alcohol to changes in body weight are not properly understood. His team pointed out the strong protective effects of moderate drinking on the risk of getting conditions like diabetes( 糖尿病), which relate to increasing obesity. Some studies suggest that even very obese people may be at lower risk of diabetesif they are moderate drinkers. The group says alcohol provides calories that are quickly absorbed into the body and are not stored in fat, and that this process could explain the differences inits effects from those of other foods. They agree that future research should bedirected towards assessing the roles of different types of alcoholic drinks, taking into consideration drinking patterns and including the past tendency of participantsto gain weight. For now there is little evidence that consuming small to moderate amounts ofalcohol on a regular basis increases one ’s risk of becoming obese. What ’s more,a study three years ago suggested that resveratrol, a compound present in grapesand red wine destroys fat cells.【文章大意】人们普遍认为经常饮酒会导致肥胖, 但是最近研究人员发现适量饮酒可以起到减肥的效果, 而且还可以防止糖尿病。

话题语篇专攻练 2人际关系(二)(建议用时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解ATo be successful in any aspect of life, you need to know when to use the carrot or the stick. Here are a few tips to help you decide whether it’s be tter to use the carrot or the stick. With the kidsThe carrot When it comes to raising a kid, the carrot or the stick dilemma is quickly disappearing as too many parents take the carrot approach to the extreme. In child raising, the carrot should never be materialistic(物质的)things. If you want to ask for good behavior with a reward, it should be with something that can’t be bought, say, trust. The stick Nowadays, no one likes to use the stick any more, or in my father’s case, the belt. I’m not overlooking child abuse, if you ever want to call it that, but I am encouraging parents to toughen up a bit. You don’t want your kid to test your limits only to find out he can getaway with it. If you want to raise a kid, raise the hand and let him know it comes down on the second offense. At the officeThe carrot People need encouragement and motivation to perform well. However, the carrot only really works well with employees who have already proved themselves. If you’ve got someone who can’t show up at the office before noon, the promise of a raise isn’t going to do much. On the contrary, if there’s a guy with a good work moral, he’ll thrive(grow stronger)when you add a promotion to the picture. The stick When considering the carrot or the stick in the office, remember that, overall, the stick is the most practical method in the office. A wise man, who just happened to be an Italian, once said “It’s best to be both loved and feared. ”It’s nice to have everyone love you, but running a business isn’t like running a f amily. You need to have the stick constantly raised. With the wifeThe carrot When it comes to marriage, some always use the carrot. I’ve had a lovely marriage for many years, and I’ve always stuck to the carrot approach. Sometimes you catch more flies with honey, and sometimes it’s the crack of a whip(鞭子)that gets the horse moving. Try not to use too many sticks at home; the carrot is much more fun.【文章大意】对于孩子、办公室员工和妻子, 在不同方面我们应该用什么方式区别对待呢?1. What is the best title of this passage?A. The Carrot or the Stick?B. 话题语篇专攻练15文娱体育(二)(建议用时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AA few years ago, pop poets such as Murray Lachlan Young began to set poetry to rock music with some surprising results. People thought that poetry wa s the new rock’n’roll. However, despite the brief popularity of a few pop poets, poetry and pop music didn’t seem to mix. But are they really so different? If you look back at the origins of poetry, there is a strong connection between poems and popular music. In Greek mythology, for example, the muse(女神)Erato is pictured with a lyre(里尔琴)in her hand, and looks just like the ancestor of the modern rock star with his electric guitar. In addition, the poets Shelley and Byron were as famous in the nineteenth century as the pop stars of today. But despite their common origins, there are many differences between poetry and pop music. Pop songs are always written for a public performance, whereas poetry often isn’t. And the lyrics in popsongs sometimes have less rhythm than those in poetry. This is because the music provides the rhythm rather than the words. Pop lyrics are also simpler and often keep on saying the same thing. This repetition works well in a performance and means that pop songs are easier for people to sing and learn by heart. Both songs and poems tell a story or talk about feelings. Songs in particular deal with the different stages in a relationship, such as falling in love or breaking up. The words and ideas in songs are usually easier to understand than those in “serious”poetry. However, talented performers like Paul McCartney, or newer stars like Robbe Williams, often give simple songs more expression when they perform them. And some of the best lines from pop lyrics are as beautiful as poetry. So although pop music and poetry have many differences, they do have one important thing in common: the power to make us think about how we feel.【文章大意】本文主要谈论的是诗歌和流行音乐的异同。

话题语篇专攻练32政治经济(二)(建议用时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AFor a long time the packaging industry has been attacked for using what is thought as large amounts of packaging, choosing materials which are felt to have high impacts on the environment, and for being responsible for littering and overflowing landfills. In a study performed by WRAP, one of the first to study food waste in the UK in 2012, the most frequent responses when consumers were asked about packaging were“uses too much material”and“bad for the environment”. The conclusions of these reports highlighted that the degree of the problem has been largely underestimated: at least 30% of food produced in the world is wasted. These figures are similar no matter if you are in the developed or developing world. However, two publications from cross-industry work groups were published recently, and have managed to reset the discussion to take into account the benefits of packaging for sustainability(可持续性). Thefirst publication, “The Global Protocol on Packaging Sustainability”, describes an agreed common approach towards measuring packaging sustainability metrics(指标), so that the industry is not competing based on the definition of a metric, but rather competing based on performance. The second was, “Packaging in the Sustainability Agenda, A Guide for Corporate Decision Makers”, which highlighted the contributions of packaging to the three aspects of sustainability: packaging protects products and prevents waste(environmental aspect); packaging enables efficient business conduct(economic aspect); and packaging provides consumers with the benefits of the products it contains(social aspect).Packaging performs indeed a wide variety of functions throughout the value chain and contributes to reducing food waste by protecting ingredients(佐料)and products during transportation and by delivering family-sized packages. Food waste could be avoided for single households if they are provided with the choice of pack sizes meeting their consumption patterns and are not forced to buy larger packs that they may not be able to finish before the use-by date. Despite the fact that smaller sized packs use more packaging, the fact that food waste is reduced would nevertheless decrease overall environmental impacts of the packed product.【文章大意】文章主要讨论的是商品的包装问题, 涉及过分的包装会对环境产生坏的影响等情况。

Module 3 Foreign Foodare truly selfish.Human children, on the other hand, are naturally cooperative. From the earliest ages, they desire to help others, to share information and to participate in achieving common goals. The psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this cooperativeness in a series of experiments with very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see an unrelated adult with hands full trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help. There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help, inform and share are not taught, but naturally possessed in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to train their children to behave socially. Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded. A third reason is that social intelligence develops in children before their general cognitive(认知的) skills, at least when compared with chimps. In tests conducted by Tomasello, the human children did no better than the chimps on the physical world tests but were considerably better at understanding the social world. The core of what children's minds have and chimps' don't is what Tomasello calls shared intentionality. Part of this ability is that they can infer what others know or are thinkig. But beyond that, even very young children want to be part of a shared purpose. They actively seek to be part of a “we”, a group that intends to work toward a shared goal.语篇解读科学家经过实验发现与黑猩猩相比,合作是人类与生俱来的一种独有的本能。

那么去听听音乐吧。

BWhy do many of us find complete pleasure in eating raw sea creatures but aren’tso inclined to chow down on uncooked birds, cows or pigs?“A big part of it is gravity—or the effective lack of it in the ocean, ”says biophysicist Ole Mouritsen. “Fish are so soft. You can stick your finger through their muscles. Try doing that with a chicken or cow. Fish muscle is very different from that in land animals. Why? Because fish can afford to be lazier than land animals. Fish essentially float all the time. Fish don’t have to support their body weight, so their muscle fibers are shorter and less tough than those in land animals. ”The same goes fo r the connective tissue holding the muscle fibers together: It’s delicate and weak.By contrast, “Land animals—like ourselves—are always working to keep themselvesupright and keep their shape, ”Mouritsen says, “so our muscle fibers are thicker, tougher an d firmer. ”In general, the more a muscle works, the tougher it gets. This idea explains why the belly of the tuna is very soft: The belly of the fish is the laziest muscle of them all. In contrast, those muscles that are more active in a tuna; the ones in its fins and tails, are a bit more chewier than other muscles. The muscle properties of fish also explain the rainbow of colors you see. “Fish that are constantly on the move—like a tuna—have muscles that are always working and burning carbohydrates aero bically, ”Mouritsen says. The muscles need oxygen to make energy. And the molecule that carries oxygen to muscle contains iron. Guess what color iron is in the fish? Red. In contrast, fish that mostly hang out in oneplace or on the bottom of the ocean hav e muscles that don’t rely on oxygen to create energy. No oxygen means no iron to carry it, which means the muscles tend to be white. So what about the salmon? They eat shellfish that are enriched with a pigment that’s related to carotene in carrots. This pigment creates the characteristic bluish-gray or green color of raw shrimp and crabs. The molecule turns bright pink or orange when the salmon eats the shellfish or we cook it.【文章大意】为什么我们喜欢生吃鱼肉, 而不是其他的肉类呢? 主要是因为鱼肉柔软, 纤维短。
