Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent?2They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent;above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline.Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball, where additional individ ual talent keeps improving the team’s performance. To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions. 3 In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is,for example, trying to gain a high personal point total,he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team’s performance.Young children learning to play team sports are often told,“There is no I in TEAM.” 4Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort.Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河竞赛),whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.5 An A-team may require a balance—not just A players, but a few generousB players as well.A.It’s not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent.B.Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent.C.The group interaction and its effect drew the re searchers’ attention.D.Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship.E.Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world.F.Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent.G.This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball.参考答案:BEGDF课后练习(二)It is necessary to be reasonable and flexible enough to avoid conflicts as much as possible and live in peace with others. 1 If you have done all your best to avoid conflicts and you are still arguing, then read these effective tips on how to avoid conflicts.Don’t get in the center of the conflict.Sometimes people can get in the center of conflicts due to their enthusiasm for offering help.Frankly speaking,it is very unwise, because it can make you the main figure of the conflict. 2 You should focus on your own life issues.Be kind.3 Life is full of conflicts and disagreements, and that’s why you should find more conservative ways of dealing with them. For example, kindness can lessen the conflict.Try to be a peacekeeper.Peacekeepers tend to cooperate with people without bad emotions which usually lead to arguments and even conflicts.“ 4 ” This saying is the life motto of a natural-born peacekeeper.Don’t worry if you are not a natural-born peacekeeper;you can gain this skill during life.Walk off. When the conflict is gathering pace and you can’t manage to control yourself, you should choose to handle the situation in another way.By all means, try to keep yourself away from stress. 5 You should get away from the situation for a while.A.The greatest victory is a battle not fought.B.Conflicts are unavoidable,so try to accept them.C.Weak people usually desire others to offer help and support.D.Let other people solve their problems without your presence.E.It is helpful to put some distance between yourself and the opponent.F.When someone pushes you to the limit, try to act kindly towards this person.G.Arguing can either break your friendship or affect your relationship to some degree.参考答案:GDFAE。

公交车司机救到一个人的后续英语作文全文共5篇示例,供读者参考篇1The Brave Bus Driver Who Saved A LifeOne day after school, I was on the bus going home like I do every day. I always sit near the front because I like seeing out the big window. The bus driver is really nice. His name is Mr. Johnson and he always smiles and says "Hey there, kiddo!" when I get on.Well, on this day something really crazy happened! We were going down Main Street when all of a sudden, Mr. Johnson slammed on the brakes. The bus jerked forward and I almost fell out of my seat! A bunch of other kids yelled "Whoa!" because we weren't expecting that. Then Mr. Johnson opened the doors and ran outside! I couldn't believe it. I looked out the window and saw a woman lying on the ground nearby. She must have fallen or gotten hurt somehow. Some other people on the street were gathered around her, but no one was helping.Mr. Johnson rushed over and knelt down next to the woman.I saw him checking her pulse and breathing and stuff. He wastrying to see if she was okay, I think. Then he took out his phone and called 911 for an ambulance. While he was on the phone, some of the people who had been just standing around finally came over to help too. A few guys lifted the woman carefully and laid her on the sidewalk. Mr. Johnson was telling the 911 operator what happened over the phone. After a few minutes, I heard sirens and saw the ambulance coming down the street. Two paramedics jumped out with a stretcher. They rushed over and put the woman on the stretcher and into the ambulance. Mr. Johnson went over and talked to them for a minute. Then the ambulance took off with lights and sirens going.Next, Mr. Johnson came back onto the bus. Some kids asked him "What happened?" but he said "Everything's okay, don't worry" in a calm voice. I could tell he was shook up though. His hands were trembling a little as he closed the bus doors. As we started driving again, I looked back and saw the people who had been gathered around were clapping. I realized they were clapping for Mr. Johnson because he saved that woman's life! If he hadn't stopped the bus and called 911 right away, who knows what could have happened to her.At the next stop, a few more kids got on. They asked Mr. Johnson "Did you really just save someone's life back there?" He nodded and said "Just doing my job, folks." But I could see he looked proud. I felt really proud of him too. When I got home, I told my mom and dad everything that happened. They were amazed by Mr. Johnson's bravery and quick thinking. My dad said "Not all heroes wear capes. Some of them drive buses." I agreed with that. Mr. Johnson was definitely a hero that day.The next morning, I brought Mr. Johnson a thank you card that I made. I told him "You were very brave and I'm proud of you for saving that lady's life." He smiled and thanked me for the nice card. Then he ruffled my hair and said "You're a great kid. I'm just glad I could help."A few weeks later, there was an article about it in the newspaper. It showed a picture of Mr. Johnson helping the woman who had collapsed. Turned out she had had a heart attack, but because Mr. Johnson acted so fast in calling 911, she survived. The article called him a "humble hero."At school, I got to take the newspaper article to show my class. My teacher said she was really proud that I knew such abrave person. She said we could all learn a lesson about helping others from Mr. Johnson's actions that day.I feel so lucky that Mr. Johnson is my bus driver. He's not just some random grown-up driving a bus. He's awesomely brave and cares about people. If I ever need help or see someone who needs help, I hope I can be as cool and heroic as Mr. Johnson was that day. He's my role model for what it means to be a good person who helps others when they're in trouble.I'm never going to forget the day Mr. Johnson saved that woman's life just by being aware of his surroundings and doing the right thing at the right time. He didn't think twice about rushing to help her. That's real bravery and heroism. Not a lot of people would have done that. From now on, whenever I ride his bus, I'm going to remember that day and how awesome Mr. Johnson is. He's living proof that heroes can come in unlikely forms, like a bus driver with a heart of gold. Heroes like him shouldn't be forgotten. Mr. Johnson is my hero and I think he's one of the coolest people I know!篇2The Brave Bus Driver and His Amazing RescueOne day, I was riding the bus home from school like I do every day. The bus driver, Mr. Johnson, is really nice. He always smiles and says "Have a great day!" when I get off the bus. On this day though, something totally crazy happened! We were going down Main Street when all of a sudden, Mr. Johnson slammed on the brakes. The bus jerked forward and I almost fell out of my seat! "What's going on?" kids started yelling from the back. I looked out the window and saw a girl lying on the ground beside a car. She looked hurt!Mr. Johnson got on the microphone and said "Stay seated, kids. There's been an accident." Then he opened the door and ran outside toward the girl. I couldn't believe it - our bus driver was going to be a hero!A bunch of other drivers got out of their cars too. The girl was trying to get up but she couldn't. Mr. Johnson knelt down beside her and said some things to calm her down. Then he took out his phone and I heard him say "We need an ambulance right away at the corner of Main and Elm. A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle."While we waited for the ambulance, Mr. Johnson stayed with the girl and made sure she didn't move. He kept talking to her in a gentle voice. Some of the other drivers brought over blanketsand made a little shade for her with umbrellas because it was a really hot day. Finally, we heard the sirens and saw the ambulance coming down the street. Two paramedics rushed over with a stretcher. Mr. Johnson explained what happened and they carefully lifted the girl onto the stretcher. After the ambulance left, Mr. Johnson got back on the bus. His shirt was all sweaty and his forehead had beads of sweat on it. He took a deep breath and said "Is everyone okay back there?"We all clapped and cheered for him! He had saved the day and helped that poor girl when she needed it most. I felt so proud that he was our bus driver. On the way back to school, Mr. Johnson told us more about what happened. "The girl was crossing the street and the driver didn't see her because the sun was in his eyes," he explained. "She's going to be okay thanks to all of you staying calm, and because help arrived quickly."When we got back, the principal and vice principal were waiting. Mr. Johnson went over to them and I saw him point a few times to the corner of Main and Elm while talking about the accident. The grown-ups all looked really serious. The next day, Mr. Johnson got right on the microphone as soon as I got on the bus. "Riders, I have an important announcement," he said. "The girl I helped rescue yesterday is doing just fine. She had some bumps and bruises, but no broken bones or anything too serious."We all clapped and cheered again. What a relief! Mr. Johnson had really saved the day."However," he went on, "this accident was a reminder of how dangerous street crossings can be, especially on bright sunny days. The driver said he just didn't see the girl because of the glare from the sun. So please, please be extra careful whenever you're crossing the street, especially on very sunny days. Look both ways twice and make sure any drivers can see you."Mr. Johnson was not just a hero, but a great teacher too. He used this scary situation to remind all of us kids about something really important - street safety! From that day on, I will never forgot to look both ways twice before crossing. Who knows, maybe following Mr. Johnson's advice will save my life one day! He's the best bus driver a kid could ask for - brave, caring, and wants to keep us all safe. I'm so lucky he was the one behind the wheel that day.The end!篇3Here's a 2000 word English essay in the voice of an elementary school student, narrating the aftermath of a bus driver rescuing someone, written entirely in English:The Bus Driver Who Saved a LifeWow, you guys won't believe what happened to me the other day! It was totally crazy and scary, but also really cool. I'm still shaking just thinking about it!It all started when I was riding the bus home from school like I do every day. I usually sit towards the back because that's where all my friends sit. We like to goof around and joke with each other on the ride home. But this day was different. We were just a few blocks from the school when suddenly the bus driver slammed on the brakes. Like, WHAM! Everyone lurched forward and someone's backpack went flying down the aisle. We were all like "Whoa, what's going on??"Then the bus driver shouted, "Stay in your seats, kids! There's been an emergency!" He jumped out of his seat and ran out the door of the bus. We couldn't see what was happening atfirst, but then we noticed a car had crashed into a tree on the sidewalk just ahead of where the bus had stopped. Some of the kids started freaking out, but I was just frozen, staring out the window. The bus driver ran over to the crashed car and yanked open the driver's side door. Smoke was pouring out from under the hood."Oh man, I think the person is unconscious!" my friend Mikey yelled. He was right - we could see the bus driver pulling someone out of the driver's seat. They weren't moving at all.By this point, pretty much every kid on the bus had crowded over to the windows to watch. A bunch of other drivers had pulled over too and were calling 911 on their phones. The bus driver laid the unconscious person down on the sidewalk and started doing CPR, pushing on their chest over and over.I was starting to get really scared. What if the person didn't make it? The bus driver kept doing CPR for what felt like forever. Then, finally, the person's eyes fluttered open and they started coughing! Everyone on the bus started cheering. The bus driver had saved their life!Soon the ambulance and fire truck arrived with lights flashing and sirens blaring. The paramedics took over, putting anoxygen mask on the person and loading them onto a stretcher. A few firefighters went to work on the smoking car.The bus driver came back on the bus, huffing and puffing. His shirt was drenched with sweat. He looked exhausted but relieved. "Is everyone okay?" he shouted. We all clapped and cheered for him. He had been so brave!"Alright folks, we're going to get moving again. I'll drop everyone off after this crazy delay," the driver said, shaking his head in disbelief at what had just happened. On the rest of the ride home, me and my friends could hardly sit still, we were so hyped up. "Did you see how the driver pulled them out of the car? That was insane!" "I can't believe he knew CPR and everything!" We kept replaying and analyzing every detail. When I got home, I burst through the door and started telling my mom the whole story. She couldn't believe it either! "Your bus driver is a real hero," she said with pride. We watched the news that night and sure enough, there was a story about the daring bus driver rescue. The next day at school, EVERYONE was talking about it. The bus driver was like a celebrity! Even the teachers werecongratulating him. We all had so much respect for him after seeing how he literally saved someone's life right before our eyes.A few weeks later, the person who had been rescued came to our school for an assembly. They had made a full recovery, thankfully. They brought the bus driver up on stage and gave him an award for heroism! We all cheered like crazy. The person explained that if the bus driver hadn't acted so quickly, they might not have survived the terrible car crash.Watching it all happen was one of the most amazing, scary, inspiring things I've ever witnessed. Whenever Iride the bus now, I make sure to thank the driver for his bravery that day. He's living proof that regular people can become heroes just by taking action and being there for others in need. I know I'll never forget the bus driver who saved a life!篇4A Brave Bus Driver's Actions Save a LifeOne day last week, something really crazy happened on the way home from school on the bus. I was just sitting there playing games on my tablet like I normally do. Everything seemed totallynormal at first. But then all of a sudden, the bus driver started shouting "Oh my gosh! Someone call 911!"I looked up from my game and saw that the bus had stopped and the driver had jumped out of his seat. I craned my neck to see what was going on out the front window. At first I couldn't really tell, but then I saw there was a person lying on the ground near the bus stop! The bus driver ran over to them really quickly. All the other kids started getting super loud and crazy, shouting things like "What's happening?" and "Is that person dead??" I felt my heart beating really fast as I wondered if the person was okay. Were they still alive? The bus driver knelt down next to the person and shouted for one of the parent chaperones to call 911 right away. I couldn't hear everything he was saying, but it looked like he was trying to see if the person was breathing and conscious. Some parents got off the bus to go help too. After what felt like forever but was probably just a couple minutes, I heard sirens in the distance getting louder and louder. Soon an ambulance showed up, with its lights flashing everywhere. The paramedics rushed over with their equipment and the bus driver moved aside to let them take over. The paramedics seemed to be checking over the person really carefully. They put an oxygen mask on their face and hooked them up to a bunch of machines I didn't really understand. Meanwhile, a police officer showed up and started asking the bus driver and parents questions about what happened.Eventually, the paramedics put the person on a stretcher and loaded them into the ambulance. A couple of the parents went with them, maybe because they were related to the person or just to make sure they were okay. The police officer kept asking more questions as well. With the person taken away by the ambulance, the bus driver finally got back on the bus. He looked really shaken up and kept wiping sweat off his forehead. When he saw how anxious and confused all us kids looked, he said, "Everything's going to be alright, young ones. I saw that person collapsed near the bus stop, so I stopped to help right away. The paramedics are taking great care of them now."He started driving the bus again, but I could tell his hands were shaking a little on the steering wheel still. I felt really grateful that he had acted so quickly and bravely. If he hadn't seen that person and stopped to help, who knows what couldhave happened to them? They could have... you know... died or something. It was so scary but heroic at the same time. The next day at school, there was a lot of buzz about the whole situation. Some kids who weren't on the bus were saying the person had been stabbed or shot or something! But the real story spread around pretty quickly, as told by those of us who witnessed it firsthand. Our teacher Ms. Roberts held a class discussion about what had happened. She said the bus driver, Mr. Jackson, had done an incredibly brave and heroic thing by stopping to help the person in need right away. She explained that every minute counts in those kinds of situations, and his quick actions could have saved that person's life. A lot of kids agreed he was a hero.A couple days later, Ms. Roberts told us some updated news she had heard. Apparently, the person who had collapsed was an older woman who had suffered a major heart attack while waiting for the bus. The paramedics said if it wasn't for Mr. Jackson stopping and calling 911 so quickly, she might not have survived! The woman was still in the hospital recovering, but she was expected to make it through okay. Her family had reached out to the school district and the bus company to thank Mr. Jackson foressentially saving her life. There was even talk of giving him an award for his heroism!I felt really proud of our bus driver after hearing that update. He seemed like such a regular, normal guy, but when the moment called for courage and quick thinking, he totally stepped up. His bravery made all the difference for that poor woman.I couldn't stop thinking about how if our bus driver had hesitated or not paid close attention, things could have turned out so differently and tragically. It really showed me how important it is to always be aware of your surroundings and ready to help people in need, even if it's not your job. One person's actions can mean the difference between life and death. From that day on, I made a vow to myself to keep my eyes open and not just have my face buried in a tablet or phone all the time. If I ever saw someone in trouble like that, I hoped I would have the courage to jump in and help right away, just like Mr. Jackson did. His bravery and caring literally saved someone's life. After all, wouldn't you want someone to do the same for you or your family if the situation was reversed? The way I see it, we should all strive to be a little bit more like that heroic bus driver. The world would be a much better, safer place if more peoplecared enough to go out of their way to help strangers in need. Even kids can make a difference if we keep our eyes open.I know I'll never forget that crazy day and the lessons it taught me about being brave, thinking of others, and doing the right thing even when it's difficult or scary. Let's hear it for heroes like Mr. Jackson, the bus driver whose actions saved a life!篇5The Day the Bus Driver Became a HeroMy name is Timmy and I'm 10 years old. I ride the bus to school every day and back home again in the afternoon. Usually it's just a regular bus ride, but one day something really exciting and scary happened! Mr. Roberts, who is our bus driver, ended up saving someone's life. It was crazy! It all started on the morning bus ride to school. I was sitting near the back like I always do with my friend Jake. We were playing a car game and looking out the window when all of a sudden there was this loud BANG! It made me jump right out of my seat."What was that?!" I shouted. Jake's eyes were as big as pancakes.Mr. Roberts had slammed on the brakes really hard. The bus screeched to a stop right in the middle of Main Street. Everyone was screaming and asking what happened. Some kids even fell onto the floor! Then Mr. Roberts started yelling, "Emergency, emergency! Someone call 911!" His face was bright red and he looked really worked up about something.I stuck my head out from my seat to see what the commotion was. That's when I saw a man lying unconscious and bleeding on the side of the road right in front of the bus! He must have gotten hit by a car. It was terrible. Some of the students started crying because there was blood everywhere. But Mr. Roberts didn't hesitate at all. He rushed off the bus carrying his first aid kit and ran right over to the injured man. While he was checking on the man, a few parents who had seen what happened pulled over and got out of their cars. One dad took out his phone and immediately dialed 911 like Mr. Roberts asked. A mom helped direct the other cars to go around the bus so an ambulance could get through easily.I couldn't really see everything that was going on from inside the bus. But Mr. Roberts was putting pressure on the man's wounds and making sure he was breathing okay until the ambulance arrived. He looked so brave and focused. The ambulance got there in what felt like no time. The paramedics rushed over with their equipment and began helping the injured man right away. They put him on a stretcher and into the ambulance. One of the paramedics patted Mr. Roberts on the shoulder before they took off with sirens blaring, like he was thanking him for his quick action. After that, the police came and started asking Mr. Roberts and the parents who had stopped to help some questions. There were police cars all over the place with their lights flashing. It looked just like a scene from an action movie! While the police were investigating, a security guard from the bank down the street brought out some orange cones to block off the area. He said the unconscious man must have been running across the road from the bank when he got struck by a car.Can you imagine?? A bank must have just gotten robbed and this poor man was the one being chased by the robbers! The whole situation was insane. Our usually boring bus ride turnedinto a real-life crime scene. I couldn't believe what my eyes had seen.Eventually, another bus driver came to pick us up and take us to school. I was two hours late to class because of the whole ordeal! My teacher kept asking me why I was so late and I had to explain the entire crazy story. Nobody could believe that our morning bus ride had turned into such an unbelievable event. The next day, Mr. Roberts was back behind the wheel like nothing had happened. But I could tell he seemed really proud of himself, like he had done something heroic. During our bus ride, he spent the whole time telling all of us kids about how he sprang into action to help the injured man and waited with him until the ambulance arrived. He said he had just reacted on instinct because he couldn't stand to see someone hurt and not do anything. Mr. Roberts said it was his duty to keep us all safe on his bus, but also to help out anyone else in harm's way if he could. He's not just a bus driver, he's a real-life superhero! All the kids started cheering for him and saying he was our hero too. We bashfully asked if he could show us some of his other sweet moves in case we ever needed to save someone too.Mr. Roberts just laughed and said he'd be happy to teach us some basic first aid. From that day on, everyone looked at Mr. Roberts a little differently. He's not just the guy who drives us to school every morning. He's the man who rescued an innocent person's life and helped catch a criminal without hesitating to put himself in danger. How cool is that?Whenever I ride the bus now, I get to be transported by a true hometown hero. I like to imagine Mr. Roberts singing a superhero tune and dashing off our bus in a cape to save the day again if he ever needed to. He's simply the bravest, coolest bus driver in the world to me now!I'll never forget the day Mr. Roberts became a local legend by being at the right place at the right time and doing his duty to protect human life. Not all heroes have supernatural powers or wear capes. Some of them are just ordinary people who make extraordinary choices to help others when the situation calls for it. Mr. Roberts taught me that you should always do the right thing and help someone in need whenever you can. That's what it really means to be a hero.。

In my head, I imagined a juicy, tender (嫩的) whole bird with perfectly crispy (酥脆的) browned skin with a side of mashed potatoes (土豆泥): just the way it is always prepared in America, right? For some reason, I never stopped to think that the Chinese definition of a “whole chicken” might be different from my assumptions. I waved a waiter over and hurriedly pointed to the line on the menu to show my food request. Finally, I would be able to satisfy my eagerness!Yet, when the bird finally landed on my plate, my wide grin (咧嘴笑) turned to one of shock. Rather than a golden crispy brown, the skin was instead bright yellow. But the mostobvious was something that I would rather not have seen at all: the head! In all my years of eating chicken, I had never seen the head still attached to the rest of the body. Yet here it was, staring back at me.In America, although people understand where meat comes from, the way food is presented means they aren’t reminded of the living animal it once was. When staring face-to-face with the dead bird on my plate, that fact was made much more apparent.Still, I carried on, trying to ignore the head while I dug into the chicken breast (胸脯肉). But, even here, I found organs (器官) like the heart and lungs that had not been totally removed. Finally, I gave up and just focused on the rice instead.Afterward, I came to understand chicken is almost always served with the head in Chinese dishes. Although my tolerance for food has expanded since then, I will never forget the first time I ordered a whole chicken and got more than what I had expected.6.Why did the author go to eat a whole chicken?A.He missed the food of his home country.B.He wanted to try Chinese-style chicken.C.He came across a unique restaurant.D.He liked its picture on the menu.7.What shocked the author most?A.The chicken’s size.B.The chicken’s dark color.C.The chicken not being crispy.D.The chicken served with its head.8.Why did the author give up eating the chicken finally?A.He disliked its taste.B.He preferred the rice.C.He found organs inside.D.He missed American food.9.What does the author think of Chinese food in the end?A.Acceptable.B.Scary.C.Tasty.D.Comfortable.10.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Eating habits in China.B.Cooking style of Chinese chicken.C.My homesickness in China.D.My first taste of a chicken in China. Most of us can’t smell our own breath. If someone bravely informs you your breath smells, believe them, and do something about it.Your breath can be the first sign that something in your body needs attention. Here are some tips to help you identify the cause, and how to fix it.Of the many causes of bad breath, 90% come from rotten (腐烂的) — smelling bacterial (细菌的) by-products inside our mouth. These by-products form a series of odours (气味) that can make our breath smell like rotten eggs or human waste. The largest and most significant odour-producing part is our tongue. The back of our tongue is a perfect place for bacteria that feed on dead cells, saliva (唾液) proteins, sinus ooze and fluids from untreated tooth disease. These bacteria can form a furry coat on our tongue that spreads through our breath. The good news is that you can fix this by brushing your tongue when you clean your teeth.Eating onion and garlic can add a sulphurous (硫的) tone to your breath for up to three days, due mainly to food particles left behind. Smoking also causes bad mouth smells to stay.Hard-to-reach places in the mouth where the toothbrush just can’t seem to clean can act like greenhouses where unhealthy bacteria develop. Spaces in faulty or broken fillings, holes in teeth, gap s in the gums, as well as improperly cleaned dental implants (移植) all contribute to bad odours. Your dentist can help identify these smell-promoting storing places, and fix or clean them.We all experience morning breath, with some suffering more than others. Morning breath occurs when our saliva flow slows or stops while we sleep. And without saliva to wash, everything seems to stop and the bacteria multiply to give off gassy odours. Other factors that reduce saliva include stress, anxiety, blood-pressure-reducing medication, drugs, caffeine and alcohol. This is why it is important to brush your teeth, and use suitable tools such as proper brushes before going to bed.11.What is the function of paragraph 1?A.To share an experience.B.To introduce a topic.C.To state an opinion.D.To raise a question.12.What does the underlined word “identify” mean in paragraph 2?A.Confirm.B.Report.C.Avoid.D.Present.13.Which part contributes most in producing bad smell?A.Mouth.B.Teeth.C.Tongue.D.Nose.14.What shall we do to avoid bad breath?A.Keep off onion and garlic.B.Reduce smoking.C.Skip meals frequently.D.Drink coffee and alcohol.15.What could be the best title of this passage?A.Dirty tongues lead to bad smellB.Improper habits cause bad smellC.Follow daily routine and avoid bad breathD.Find the causes of bad breath and the ways to remove itHow can humans become immortal (永生的)? You might have only seen the idea of uploading the human brain to a digital cloud in science fiction movies. Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, has already done so. 16 “If you could upload your brain to the cloud, and talk to a virtual version of yourself, would you be buddies?” Musk replied on July 19,“Already did it.” The reply indicated that Musk’s brain-computer interface (接口) company, Neuralink, had already realized the technology. What does Neuralink do?Neuralink was founded by Musk in 2016. The company focuses on brain-computer interface technology which is used to connect the brain to a digital network. It is developing devices for the treatment of patients with neurological disorders (神经障碍). 17 How do brain-computer interfaces work?18 For example, if a person imagines picking up a book, the computer would then learn to identify how the brain gives that command. Next, the computer would send the signal to the machine, which would then move a robotic arm to reach for the book.19Uploading a brain is only part of Musk’s plan. He revealed to Insider that his goal is to download human consciousness (意识) into robots. Just like how our memories are stored in mobile phones through pictures and videos, Musk imagines that our brains — not only how we think, but also our personalities and habits — can be transferred (转入) into robots. In this way, even after our bodies are rotten, our brains are preserved. 20 “The most wildly optimisticpredictions place mind uploading within a few decades, but I would not be surprised if it took centuries,” wrote Michael S. A.Graziano, a professor at Princeton University, in a Wall Street Journal essay.A.What will happen next?B.Why does this technology come into being?C.In other words, the company aims to create links between mind and machine.D.The secret was revealed when a question posted on Twitter caught his attention.E.So many famous scientists are working together to turn this idea into a great reality. F.Some experts believe that this could be realized one day, but the timeline is unclear. G.Computers designed to learn the patterns of neural activity are used to get information from human brains.二、完形填空Recently, I volunteered with Interact, my school’s service group at Read 2 Me, an activity that gives volunteers the opportunity to read to little kids and interact with them.I walked with other 21 into a large room with a large variety of books. a r X i v :h e p -l a t /9709020v 1 9 S e p 19971HUB–EP–97/59September 9,1997Hot electroweak matter near to the endpoint of the phase transitionM.G¨u rtler a ,E.-M.Ilgenfritz b ,A.Schiller a ∗,and C.Strecha aa Institut f¨u r Theoretische Physik,Universit¨a t Leipzig,Augustusplatz 10-11,D-04109Leipzig,Germany bInstitut f¨u r Physik,Humboldt-Universit¨a t zu Berlin,Invalidenstr.110,D-10115Berlin,GermanyThe electroweak phase transition is investigated near to its endpoint in the framework of an effective three–dimensional model. We measure the very weak interface tension with the tunneling correlation length method.First results for the mass spectrum and the corresponding wave functions in the symmetric phase are presented.1.The modelThe model under consideration is the 3d SU (2)–Higgs model with the lattice action S=βGp1−12tr(Φ+x U x,µΦx +µ)+ xρ2x +βR (ρ2x −1)2,(1)ρ2x =(1/2)tr(Φ+x Φx ).Our conventions and up-date details can be found in [1].Relations be-tween the parameters of this effective model and the physical quantities Higgs mass and tempera-ture are derived in [2].2.Interface tensionThe interface tension αcharacterises the strength of a first order phase transition. We apply the tunnelling correlation method [3]to determine its value for a Higgs mass of about 70GeV by studying the inverse correlation length m lat =m gap a (given by the correlation function of the Higgs operator ρ2x along z )in an elongatedlattice L 2×L z as function of the transverse area a 2L 2.The scaling of m gap at the critical point is predicted for a φ4-model as m gap aL ∝x exp (−x )with x =αa 2L 2/T c [3]by considering quadratic fluctuations around the kink solution in a semi-classical expansion.2Figure 2.Interface tension for several Higgsmasses;for references see[5,6].Fig.2collects published results for the inter-face tension(scaled by critical temperature)α/T3cof the SU(2)–Higgs model. In order to makethis useful we had to recalculate the3d resultsto4d conventions(adjusting to a renormalisedgauge coupling0.58characteristic for the4d lat-tice data). This comparison further supports thevalidity of dimensional reduction.3.Wavefunctions and excited statesKnowledge of the mass spectrum of screeningstates in the symmetric phase is important to de-scribe the high T phase by non-perturbative an-alytic models. The wave functions may charac-terise the change between the phases.First stud-ies have been reported recently[7].To study ground state and excited states(andpossibly wave functions)one has to use cross-correlations between operators O i from a com-plete set in a given J P C channel. In the transfermatrix formalism they describe the spectral de-composition(Ψ(n)i= vac|O i|Ψ(n) ,|Ψ(n) beingthe zero momentum energy eigenstates)C ij(t)=∞n=1Ψ(n)iΨ(n)∗je−m n t(3)where C(t)is the connected correlation matrix fordistance t in one of the spatial directions. On the lattice one can use only a truncated setof operators O i(i=1,...,N)which is assumedto allow the extraction of the lowest lying statesby considering the eigenvalue problem for C ij(t).Solving instead the generalised eigenvalue prob-lemjC ij(t)Ψ(n)j=λ(n)(t,t0) j C ij(t0)Ψ(n)j(4)errors related to this truncation can be minimised(t>t0,t0=0,1)[8].The wavefunction of state n in the given oper-ator basis is found(atfixed small distance t>t0)to beΨ(n)i(t)= vac|O i e−Ht|Ψ(n) .(5)The components characterise the contribution ofthe original lattice operators to the(ground orexcited)state in the J P C ing opera-tors of different transverse extension(eventuallyonly a subset of a used operator set withfixedquantum numbers)one can derive their relativecontribution to an optimised wavefunction.Themasses of these states are obtainedfitting the di-agonal elementsµ(n)(t)µ(n)(t)= ijΨ(n)∗i C ij(t)Ψ(n)j(6)to cosh form. Our base in the Higgs-channel(0++)is built bythe operatorsρ2x,S x,µ(l)as well as quadratic Wil-son loops of size l×l.In the W-channel(1−−)we use the operators V b x,µ(l)and in the(2++)-channel S x,µ(l)−S x,ν(l).Here the following no-tation is used(l counts the string length in latticeunits)S x,µ(l)=12tr(τbΦ+x U x,µ...U x+(l−1)µ,µΦx+lµ).As an example we show the squared wave-function for ground state andfirst excitation inthe1−−-channel in the high temperature phasenear to the transition as function of the operator3length l for a 503lattice.The length is mappedto universal g 23units in order to accommodate three βG values atthe line of constant physicsm 23/g 43≈0.002(Figs.3,4)at M ∗H =70GeV.Figure 3.Squared wavefunction |Ψ(1)l |2for 1−−groundstate n =1vs.physical lengthFigure 4.Same as Fig.3for first excited state n =2A good scaling behaviour is observed. The last point (l =25)seems to accumulate contributions from longer operators which do not fit to the lat-tice.First results on the spectrum using these wave-functions are presented in Fig.5showing to whatFigure smearing procedures, mixing properties of excited states and results on different Higgs masses will be discussed in a future publication [9].REFERENCES1.M.G¨u rtler,
