Ss will know better the roles women play in social life, with their(esp. girl students’)self-esteem and sense of social responsibility boosted.Warming-up requires Ss to comment on the 6 women and give their opinions and reasons as well. This part connects Unit5,Module1.The rules concluded in the earlier unit can be applied here to identify great women. Ss should be encouraged to discuss what these women did for other people, and what problems they had to overcome or what they had to give up to achieve their ambition.Pre-reading is also a discussion but focused on Jane Goodall. The two questions raised here prompt Ss to think over the pros and cons of two approaches to scientific study(lab research & field research). Then, Ss are asked to predict the content based on the title and pictures.Reading-A Student of African Wildlife depicts a scene where Jane and her colleagues studied chimps in an African forest and explains the significance of their work and the achievements she reached. Despite the fact that it was a dirty and tiring job to do the field research in the wild, they all regarded it as worthwhile. Some of their valuable discoveries would not have been made in the lab;for the very reason Jane Goodall had chosen the primitive African forest to study in.Her years of observing and recording chimps’ daily activities attributed to a better understanding of their behaviour. She has argued that wild animals be left in the wild and not used for entertainment or advertisements. She has endeavored to enhance people’s awareness of understanding, respecting and protecting wild animals. She is an inspiring role model !Comprehending consists of 4 Exx, guiding Ss to comprehend the reading passage at different levels. Exx1-3 are intended to aid Ss to obtain important details ,grasp paragraph main ideas and transfer text information in the form of multiple choice, summing-up and filling in a chart. The 4 open-ended Qs in Ex4 encourage Ss to think in oth ers’ shoes, which helps strengt hen Ss’ faith in animals protection.Learning about Language is to discover and practice useful words, expressions and structures. school for nursing in 1860 in England. The invention of typewriters in 1867 helped to bring women out of their homes to join the business world.Because women are careful and have smart fingers, businessmen found that they were well suited to this kind of work.By 1890,tens of thousands of women were working in schools, hospitals, shops, offices, and factories both in England and the wealthy English parents were traveling in Europe. As a child, she traveled to many places with her family and learned how to speak several languages. When Nightingale was 17,she told her family that she was going to help sick people. Her parents did not agree, but Nightingale was determined. She traveled to hospitals all over Europe. She saw that doctors were working too hard. She saw that patients died because they did not get enough care.Nightingale felt that women could be doing more to help doctors take care of sick people.Nightingale knew that in order for nurses to do more, they needed special training in how to take care of sick people.Nightingale went to a hospital in Germany to study nursing. Then she returned to London and became the head of a group of women called Gentlewomen During Illness. These women cared for sick people in their homes. In 1854,England was fighting a war with Russia.War reporters wrote about the terrible conditions in the hospitals that cared for the wounded.People demanded that something be done about it.A leader of the government asked Florence Nightingale to take some nurses into the war hospitals. So,in November 1854,Nightingale finally got to work in a hospital. She took along 38 nurses whom she had trained herself. At first, the doctors on the battlefields did not want Nightingale and her nurses in their hospitals. They did not believe that women could help. But in fact, the nurses did make a difference. They worked around the clock, looking after the wounded. Thanks to their hard work, many wounded soldiers survived. After the War,Nightingale and her nurses were treated like heroes. Finally,in 1860,she started the Nightingale School for Nurses. In time, thanks to Florence Nightingale, nursing became an important part of medicine.64.Florence C本句是一个被动结构,即“我们被鼓舞”,因此第一个空应选inspired;表示the songs 是“令人鼓舞的”,应用inspiring.22.A be worth doing的含义是“值得做”;be worthy to be done=be worthy of being done,其含义是“值得做”.23. A respectable的含义是“正派的,值得尊重的”;respectful的含义是“恭敬的,尊敬人的”;be respectful of sb's opinions可理解为“尊重某人的意见”.25.A考查名词.emergency“突发事件,紧急情况”;career“事业,生涯”;achievement“成就,成绩”;explanation“解释,说明”. 又怎么样?”;what for“为何”. 根据for three years可知应用现在完成时.29. D refer to的含义是“提到,参考”,本句中的our Chinese teacher often referred to作定语,修饰writer,因此to后面是句子的谓语动词,故选D项.30.A Behave yourself的含义是“规矩点”. D be intended for的含义是“为…… D come up的含义是“出现,发生”;come over表示“过来”;come out的含义是“出版,出现”,不能用于被动结构.come across表示“偶然遇到”,根据句意可知答案为came across.34.B the number of的含义是“……的数目”,作主语时,其谓语动词应用第三人称单数形式;a number of的含义是“许多”,作主语时其谓语动词用复数形式.35.B词组look up to的含义是“尊敬”;look down upon的含义是“瞧不起”;look at 的含义是“看”;look forward to的含义是“盼望”. 故用instead of.47.D由上文的“She went to each sick child one after the other and said...” 因此应用us.50.B由前面的look in my drawer可知此处应用find表示“你就会发现一块蛋糕”.look “看”;find “发现”;have “有”;tak e “取走,带走”.51.B由前面的“I saved it from my supper today”可知蛋糕是今天晚饭时节省下来的,因此应是很新鲜(fresh).delicious “可口的”;fresh “新鲜的”;expensive “昂贵的”;big “大的”.52.B由上一句中提到的a shilling可知,应是“买点东西喝”.borrow“借”;buy“买”;catch“抓住”;bring “带来”.53.C在第44空所在的句子可知,这个小孩子不能动,因此是躺在床上. 第二节68.G69.F70.D71.A72.C五、第一句中的taking→playing词组play a/an...part的含义是“起…… 第二句中的l ike→as work常与as连用,as的含义是“作为,当作”. 第三句:去掉were词组used to do sth的含义是“过去常常做某事”,其被动形式为“sth used to be done”. 第四句中的looking→looked词组look down upon的含义是“瞧不起,轻视”,其被动形式为“be looked down upon”. 第七句中的his→their句子的主语是a great number of men,因此其相应的形容词性物主代词是their而不是his.第九句中的allowed后加to allow sb to do sth的含义是“允许某人做某事”,其被动结构为“be allowed to do sth”.六、[写作指导]※主题:asking for help※必备词汇:take summer courses,find...interesting,have no idea,provide...for...,email address※必备句型:1.I'm...,a Chinese student taking summer courses...2.I have some difficulties with...3.I was told...provides help for...4.Here are my email address and phone number... Dear_Sir/Madam,I'm Li Hua,a Chinese student taking summer courses in your university.I'm writing to ask for help.I came here last month and found my courses interesting. But I have some difficulties with notetaking and I have no idea of how to use the library.I was told the Learning Center provides help for students and I'm anxious to get help from you.I have no class on Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons. Please let me know which day is OK with you.You may email or phone me.Here are my email address and phone number:lihua@;12345678.Look_forward_to_your_reply.Yours,Li_Hua。
