Landscape
Rough and empty lavas capes swell up around extinct and active volcanoes. Glaciers carve their way through soft rock, creating serrated ridges and valleys as defined as cut crystal. There are steaming, sulfurous blue lakes and geysers that spit up water like hidden, landlocked whales. At times, the whole country seems like a giant laboratory in the dreamscape of a sleeping geologist.
History and Culture
Iceland was the last European country to be settled, mostly by Norsemen in the 9th and 10th centuries. They came mainly from Norway and elsewhere in Scandinavia, and from the Norse settlements in the British Isles, from where a Celtic element was also introduced. The language and culture of Iceland were predominantly Scandinavian from the outset, but there are traces of Celtic influence in some of the ancient poetry, in some personal names and in the appearance of present-day Icelanders.

Iceland, an island about the size of Kentucky, lies in the north Atlantic Ocean east of Greenland and just touches the Arctic Circle. It is one of the most volcanic regions in the world. More than 13% is covered by snowfields and glaciers, and most of the people live in the 7% of the island that is made up of fertile coastland. The Gulf Stream keeps Iceland's climate milder than one would expect from an island near the Arctic Circle.

What makes Iceland stand out as a venue is its unique natural beauty and absence of pollution. Dramatic volcano and glacier scenery-and conversely, action packed incentives are there waiting to be enjoyed by visitors. Reykjavík, the capital city is next door to nature. Iceland is only about a 3-hour flight from most European cities and 5 hours from the North American Eastern seaboard. From Reykjavík you can fly to many towns and tourist attractions around the country, such as Akureyri, the capital of the north, with its beautiful surrounding scenery, or the Westman Islands.
Climate
The climate of Iceland's coast is subpolar oceanic. The warm North Atlantic Current ensures generally higher annual temperatures than in most places of similar latitude in the world. The average temperature of the warmest month, July, exceeds 10°C in the lowlands of southern and western Iceland, but is below that in other parts of the country This makes the larger part of Iceland belonging to the arctic climate zone. The warmest summer days can reach 20-25°C, with the absolutely highest 20-25° temperatures recorded at around +30°C. Winters in Iceland, on the other hand, are generally very mild for this northerly latitude . The coastal lowlands have mean January temperatures close to 0°C, and only in the highlands of central Iceland do ° the temperatures stay below -10°C. The lowest winter temperatures in northern Iceland and the highlands are generally in the range -25 to -30°C, with -39.7°C the lowest temperature ever recorded.
