(Unit 7 Energy and food crises)
Unit 7 Energy and food crisesSection A7-2 Text A: The coming energy crisisPre-reading activitiesPre-reading activities-1参考:A. Less than 6 pointsYou may have heard about energy conservation, but you are not giving it the priority it deserves. You must do better.B. Between 6-10 pointsYou are already doing a few basic things, but there is so much more that you could do to show a better awareness for energy conservation.C. Between 11-16 points You display a good awareness of energy saving, but there's still room for improvement.D. Between 17- 20 points You can rightly call yourself an "Energy Saving Champion" - well done and keep up the good work!Pre-reading activities-21) Yes, it's definitely important to conserve energy. There are several reasons. First, it reduces our consumption of fossil fuels which have a fixed quantity of availability and are rapidly diminishing. Second, it saves us money because we don't have to build more power plants. Third, it reduces carbon emission, which will contribute greatly to the improvement of our air quality and natural environment.2) There are many other things we can do to save energy, such as: Not to overheat or overcool our rooms. Reduce the amount of waste we produce by buying minimally packaged goods. Choose reusable products over disposable ones, and recycle. Plan carefully and cluster our errands and shopping to minimize the miles we drive. Use less hot water by installing low-flow shower heads. Install a solarwater heater for our home. Drive a pure electric car (with a back-up generator for out-of-range driving). Walk or ride a bicycle whenever we can. Reading comprehensionReading comprehension-11) The world has depended mainly on non-renewable fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas for its industrial development in the past.2) Fossil fuels have two major problems: Their supply is limited, and they cause health and environmental problems.3) 1) Nuclear power is not really cheap when all costs are considered;2) Disastrous nuclear accidents could happen;3) Nuclear waste can be used improperly to cause damage.4) It means that the time when there is sufficient supply of cheap energy from fossil fuels will soon be over. Here "honeymoon" is used metaphorically.5) The point the author wants to illustrate is: Although renewable energy sources are promising, there are still various problems with these "new energy" technologies. The greatest problem is to find ways to use these technologies more efficiently and at lower costs.6) Biomass energy is a renewable energy option, but the production of it can cause air pollution and ozone layer depletion. The process of producing it is also complicated and costly.7) According to the author, the best solution to the world's energy problem must come from various energy technologies that are non-damaging to the environment, rather than from any single technology.8) The purpose of the text is to convince us that our world will soon be faced with a serious energy crisis, and to urge us to work quickly and cooperatively to find the best solutions.Reading comprehension-21) Yes. Because:Non-renewable fossil fuels are being used up. Nuclear energy is not safe.Renewable energy alternatives are still too expensive, and can't be used on a large scale. Population is increasing fast.Developing countries demand more energy than before because of their economic development.No. Because:There is still abundant oil and natural gas in the ground. There are more known reserves now than there have ever been.Conservation will play a role.Energy efficient products and buildings are becoming more and more common.New energy technologies are being developed and perfected.2) A lot of problems may occur if there is an energy crisis, such as:disruption of energy supplies;rapidly increasing energy prices;declining economic growth;increasing inflation;rising unemployment.3) The key factors that cause the changes of oil prices usually include:changes in oil supply and demand;oil speculation activities;world conflicts;natural disasters;monopoly of the oil-producing nations.4) Yes, nuclear energy should be banned because: Radioactive waste is harmful to people's health. Disastrous nuclear accidents may happen. There is the danger of nuclear proliferation. Exploitation of non-renewable uranium will continue, which will result in the exhaustion of another natural resource. No, nuclear energy shouldn't be banned because: Nuclear energy causes no release of greenhouse gases. Nuclear energy has low operating costs.Nuclear energy can be an extremely reliable source of power if managed well.5) Yes, I agree that China is having a serious energy problem. With China's rapid economic growth and continuously expanding urban population, the demandfor energy is increasing tremendously. The present energy supply can hardly meet the demand from both industry and households, especially in summer months. More electricity has yet to be produced. No, I don't agree that China is facing a serious energy problem. China is a large country with rich natural resources. Though traditional fossil fuels are reported to be running out, there is no hard evidence showing they really are because new coal mines and oil fields could be discovered. Besides, China is serious about the development of renewable energy, and is currently leading the world in renewable energy investment. So, even if fossil fuels become less, China can depend more on solar and wind power for its energy needs in the future.7-3 Text A: Language focusWords in use1. fringe2. unify3. extinct4. indefinite5. slash6. intricate7. inaugurate8. ventilate9. collaboration10. diffusedWord building: Practice Word building: Practice-11) competence2) adolescent3) delegation4) condemnation5) restoration6) preservation7) specification8) reconciliation9) resignation10) speculation11) revelation12) situateWord building: Practice-21. delegation2. restoration3. situate4. specifications5. competence6. adolescent7. condemnation8. reconciliation9. preservation10. resignation11. speculation12. revelation, revelations Banked cloze1) particulates2) viable3) disagree4) cite5) rotary6) vary7) little8) minimize9) locating10) designedExpressions in use1. fill up2. is projected to3. have factored in4. pose a risk to5. clear up6. is derived from7. hinge on8. is upon7-4 Structure analysis & writingStructured writing: Practice参考:As the world's oil supply runs out, it becomes more urgent to develop sustainable energy sources. As one of the available new energy alternatives, nuclear power is good because it is cheap and clean. However, in my mind, it is not a best energy option due to the environment, safety, and health concerns it poses.First, nuclear power poses serious environmental concerns. Though nuclear power plants emit no carbon dioxide, radioactive wastes from them, such as spent fuel rods, can remain active for hundreds or even thousands of years. Safe disposal of these wastes is still not possible. Besides, much of the equipment in the nuclear power plants becomes contaminated with radiation, which can cause serious problems to the local environment. Nuclear power plants also use large quantities of water for steam production and cooling, thus affecting water quality and aquatic life.Second, nuclear power causes great safety concerns. Despite the claim that nuclear power industry has a "superb record" on safety, a few major nuclear disasters have left many people believing that nuclear power plants are not safe enough. Both technical failure and human error can occur, leadingto nuclear accidents. Even if there is no nuclear accident, some by-products of nuclear reactors could be improperly used to make nuclear weapons. Moreover, nuclear power plants could become prime targets for terrorist attacks, and a satisfactory plan to protect nuclear power plants from terrorism is not in place. Third, nuclear power raises a number of health concerns. The small amounts of radioactive material released during routine operations may have detectable medical effects on nearby populations. In the event of a nuclear disaster, health concerns become more obvious. Exposure to radioactive fallout would lead to an increased risk of genetic disorders, cancer and other diseases. As an energy alternative that has low costs and creates no greenhouse gas emissions, nuclear power can be developed and used, but only on a limited scale. It is certainly not a best solution to our energy problem due to the various concerns it causes. To meet our increasing demand for energy, scientists andresearchers have to work harder to find more viable solutions.7-5 TranslationTranslationTranslation-1参考:国际原子能机构是世界核领域的合作中心,它于1957年作为世界性的原子能为和平服务的组织而建立,成为联合国大家庭的一员。

That’s good enough for us.Qiang: Right on.V. Let’s TalkScriptThe notion of a weekly rest is ancient. Christian religions celebrate a day of rest kno wn as the Sabbath, also called the Lord’s Day. It is on Sunday. The weekend as a holiday is a rather modern invention. Before the industrial revolution the wage labor force was a small fraction of the population. The day of the Sabbath was viewed as one dedicated to God, not one of relaxation. The early industrial period in Europe saw a six-day work week with only Sunday off, but some workers had no days off at all. Only the workers’rights movements in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century saw a five-day work week introduced as Saturday became a day of rest and relaxation. This movement began in England. In many ways this has been a great boon to the economy as it leads to a great increase in consumer spending on Saturdays as restaurant visits, motorcar journeys, or trips to the movies became common on Saturday. Many jurisdictions continued to enforce strict Lord’s Day laws on Sunday, which meant that most places of recreation, such as stores and theaters, were forced to close on that day. These regulations began to weaken in the years after the Second World War, and Sunday also became a day of recreation for many. After centuries of development, the weekend is now a part of the week usually lasting two days in which most paid workers do not work. This is a time for leisure and recreation, and for religious activities.VI. Further Listening and SpeakingTask2: The Modern CircusScriptThe first modern circus was staged in London in 1768 by Philip Astley, a former English cavalry officer, who performed as a trick ride. Beginning with a visit to Paris in 1772, Astley introduced the circus in cities throughout continental Europe and was responsible for establishing permanent circuses in a number of European countries as well as in England. A circus was first presented in 1793 at the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg.By the early 19th century, several permanently-based circuses were located in larger European cities. In addition, small traveling shows moved from。

Stocks of wheat are at sufficiently high levels, and harvest turnout from other big producers like the US is expected to stay strong. So unlike in 2007, the supply situation isn't desperate, meaning wheat prices should eventually calm down and level off.

2. What was the main reason of the 2007-2008 world food price crisis?
Tips Initial causes of the 2007-2008 price spikes included droughts in grain-producing nations and rising oil prices. Oil price increases also caused general escalations in the costs of fertilizers, food transportation, and industrial agriculture. Root causes may be the increasing use of biofuels in developed countries and an increasing demand for a more varied diet across the expanding middle-class populations of Asia. All of these factors, coupled with falling world food stockpiles, contributed to the worldwide rise of food prices.

But shall we take a long tour or a whirlwind tour that allow us only afew hours in each place?Qiang: In a long tour we can look around and not feel rushed, but it’s too expensive. In addition, small traveling shows moved fromtown to town in covered wagons in which the performers lived. The traveling shows were usually simple affairs, featuring a fiddler or two, a juggler, a ropedancer, and a few acrobats. In the early circuses such performers gave their shows in open spaces and took up a collection for pay; later, the performers used elaborate shows. In the earlier part of the 19th century a main feature of the permanent circus program was the presentation of grams that included displays of horsemanship. Throughout the 19th century the circus evolved in programming and management. Initially, trained horse and horsemanship performances dominated circuses, but ropedancing, juggling, acrobatic acts, wild-animal acts, and clowning were all introduced within the first few decades. The flying trapeze, an important part of the modern circus, was not invented until 1858, and the street parade and sideshow did not become standard circus events until later in the 19th century. Tents are believed to have come into use in the 1820s, but it is uncertain whether they appeared first in Europe or in the United States.Nowadays, the entertainment activities offered at a circus are more elaborate, generally consisting of displays of horsemanship, exhibitions by gymnasts, aerialists, wild-animal trainer, performing animals, and comic performance by clowns.27. Historically, only local governments worried about a widespread food crisis, but today, a sharp spike in food prices and the resulting food crisis can quickly bee a worldwide phenomenon、Recent droughts along the equator, and in Russia and Ukraine - two countries which account for one-fourth of world wheat exports - caused wheat prices to surge、 Many worry the tight supply will cause inflationary prices、 They fear the skyrocketing grain costs in 2007, which harshly struck the world's poor and led to food riots, will recur、在历史上,只有地方政府才会担心大范围得粮食危机,而如今,粮食价格得急剧上涨及由此导致得粮食危机会很快成为一种全球现象。
Is their fear grounded? Consultancy firms measuring the status of modities like wheat don't think so、 Stocks of wheat are at sufficiently high levels, and harvest turnout from other big producers like the US is expected to stay strong、 So unlike in 2007, the supply situation isn't desperate, meaning wheat prices should eventually calm down and level off、However, this rosy picture provides only temporary security、The bigger picture discloses a reality not so optimistic、 Though current prices aren't as sky-high as in the panicked market of 2007, they're still at higher levels than before and are likely to stay that way、 The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development sees the average prices of products classified as essential such as grains, vegetable oils, and dairy products rising for the next decade、但就是,这一美好得画面只能带来短暂得安心。
It doesn't take an oracle to forel thatthe fight to feed the world will be a huge challenge facing the global economy over the next 20 years、 Food production is suffering from decades of neglect of agriculture, a period when the sector was starved of the resources and technology it needed to keep up with rising world demand、 Though more and more people are intrigued by the issue and there is a growing global consensus about the need for reform in farming, we're really only at the beginning of a long, expensive, process of repairing world agricultural practices、 That means food prices will stay high over the next several years, as will the risk of dangerous price fluctuations like the current one with wheat、未来 20 年,让世界上所有人都吃饱饭将就是全球经济所面临得巨大挑战,这一点很明确,不需要通过行家来预言。
Food isn't like garments or other products traded on world markets、 The issue of food is filled with emotion、 Intermittent uncertainty in food markets will animate people to act when they would otherwise remain calm、 No country, for example, wants to run out of food or watch sky-high prices push people into poverty and malnourishment、 That can lead to riots or even revolutions、 When emotions are running high enough, grain exporters and importers may take extreme measures to prevent a shortage, like hoarding and panic-driven wholesale purchases、 In other words, the overreaction of market players will act like a pistol to the head, creating a crisis when none should exist、粮食这一商品与世界市场上交易得衣服或其她商品有所不同。
Will current prices stay high and volatile? Probably yes、 There are enormous structural problems with the agriculture industry that have caused the great imbalance between supply and demand、 These problems have a dual nature, one part of it on the production side, and the other on the consumption side、目前得价格会一直居高不下且变化不定吗?
On the production side, global funding for rural infrastructure or technological research to keep yields growing has been very small, well below what is needed to keep crises at bay and to meet our future food demands、 But in the past, whenever economists predicted massive shortages, technological advances like higher-yield strains of wheat would overe the difference and rescue civilizations from large-scale starvation、在生产方面,全球用于乡村基础设施建设或农业技术研究以保持粮食产量持续增长得资金非常少,大大低于能够使我们避免危机、满足人类未来食品需求所必需得资金投入量。
