Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere
A．Many people in certain Southern Hemisphere countries, such as South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, have emigrated from Europe, and they keep the traditional northern holidays. However , the seasons are opposite to the north, so they are forced to celebrate Christmas in the middle of summer, instead of in winter. Despite the difference in climate, they still stick to the old traditions on the whole.
B．Christmas is a festival that has always celebrated hope for new life in the middle of winter.
The Christian religion has adopted an existing mid-winter pagan festival, and turned it into a celebration of the birthday of Jesus Christ. The key elements of this festival revolve around cold weather, snow and darkness, with the promise of light to come. Thus, Westerners decorate their houses with twinkling coloured lights, and some households make beautiful and elaborate displays of these. This works well on the shortest days of the year, but it is less effective when the sun does not set until 9 or 10 p.m. each night! Southern Hemisphere dwellers have to wait longer each day to see the results of their hard work take effect.
C．Santa Claus is the traditional icon of the Christmas season. He is a jolly, fat man who wears furry suit and dices drives a sleigh pulled by reindeer as he delivers gifts to good children. On the face of it, this image is not exactly appropriate in the warm south. Pity the poor parents who must dress up in such a costume at 30℃to deliver presents to children’s parties in Australia. Also, sleighs are not the most practical choice for travel in island nations. Santa would be better off wearing a striped swimsuit and steering a boat pulled by dolphins, but then he wouldn’t be Santa Claus any more!
D．Like all festival and celebrations, Christmas involves family feasts. The traditional Christmas dinner features roast meat and root vegetables, followed by a Christmas pudding filled with dried fruit. This makes perfect sense in the middle of a northern winner, and a Christmas pudding is a practical solution to the problem of what to eat for dessert when fresh fruit is in very short supply. New Zealanders often ignore the traditional foods and eat seasonal fresh berries instead of heavy puddings, but they can still buy Christmas fruit puddings in their local supermarket, and some people make them at home. Many families have barbecues at the beach on Christmas Day, but others sit round the table and eat a large midday despite the hot weather.
E．Peter and Mary Jones are typical Southern Hemisphere children. They wait anxiously for Christmas to arrive, eagerly anticipating the presents that Santa might bring to them. They love visiting him in the malls before Christmas, sitting on his knee and whispering their secret wishes. They never stop to consider that his clothes are a bit hot for summertime!
