ASeven years ago, I paid a visit to an animal shelter on a cloudy day. Although my house was already full of cats and dogs, I still couldn’t resist an occasional visit to the shelter. This time as I was walking down the row of pens full of barking dogs ,I noticed a small boy looking into one of them.He had a malnourished(营养不良的)looking body and a face with a big nose sticking out of the middle of it. He was looking at a small, golden dog. Its thin tail was folded between its legs. It wasn’t begging for attention like the other puppies but was hiding in the corner instead. The boy looked up at me with sad eyes and asked what was wrong with it. “It was probably abused and abandoned”, I said. “That is why it is so scared.”The boy immediately turned to an older lady and said, “Grandma, I want this one.” The old woman smiled and walked to the front desk to fill out the adoption forms. I followed and asked about the boy. I found out that he’d had a rough start in life too. She had just gotten custody(监护权)of him after the state had taken him from his parents. She had hoped getting adog would make it easier on him. I looked back at him, holding his scared puppy, and said a prayer for them both.It was yesterday. I was driving down the road enjoying a gloriously sunny, spring day. Then in a green front yard I saw the boy. His teenage body was tall and strong. His nose no longer seemed big but fit well into his smiling face. He was throwing a ball to a healthy, happy dog with shining golden hair. His little act of love and kindness had indeed gone a long way. It had saved a do g’s life, healed his own heart, and given this middle-aged man fresh hope for us all.21. The reason why the dog was so scared is that _______ .A. it was afraid of the coldB. it had been ill-treatedC. it was frightened by the boyD. it was frightened by the author22 . Why did the boy want to adopt the golden dog?A. Because the dog looked attractive.B. Because his grandma also liked the dog.C. Because they had something in common.D. Because the author advised him to adopt it.23.The Grandma wanted the boy to adopt a dog so that ___________ .A. his life could be easierB. he could play balls with itC. he could forget about his parentsD. the dog could be taken good care of24.What can we learn from the last paragraph ?A. The author is a kind-hearted old man.B. The boy’s nose has become smaller than before.C. The author enjoys watching people playing with dogs.D. Both the boy and the dog are growing healthily and happily.BDid you know that women's brains are smaller than men's? The average women's brain weighs 10% less than men's. Since research has shown that the bigger the brain, the cleverer the animal, men must be more intelligent than women. Right? Wrong. Men and women always score similarly on intelligence tests, despite the difference in brain size. Why? After years of study, researchers have concluded that it's what's inside that matters, not just the size of the brain. The brain consists of "grey matter" and "white matter". While men have more of the latter, the amount of"thinking" brain is almost exactly the same in both sexes. It has been suggested that smaller brain appears to work faster, perhaps because the two sides of the brain are better connected in women. This means that little girls tend to learn to speak earlier, and that women can understand sorts of information from different sources at the same time. When it comes to talking to the boss on the phone, cooking dinner and keeping an eye on the baby all at the same time, it's women who come out on top every time. There are other important differences between two sexes. As white matter is the key to spatial (空间的)tasks, men know better where things are in relation to other things. "A great footballer always knows where he is in relation to the other players, and he knows where to go," says one researcher. That may explain one of life's great mysteries: why men refuse to ask for directions and women often need to!The differences begin when fetuses (胎儿) are about nineweeks old, which can be seen in the action of children as young as one. A boy would try to climb a barrier (障碍物) before him or push it down while a girl would attract help from others. These brain differences also explain the fact that more men take up jobs that require good spatial skills, while more women speech skills. It may all go back to our ancestors ,among whom women needed speech skills to take care of their babies and men needed spatial skills to hunt, according to one research. If all this disappoints you, it shouldn't. "The brain changes throughout our lives according to what we do with it." says a biologist.25.The passage mainly tells us .A.the difference between men’s and women’s brains.B.the changes in brain throughout our lives.C.that men are better at spatial tasks.D.that brain differences are related to our ancestors.26.Which of the following is true according to the first paragraph?A. Women's brain is 10% less than men's.B. Grey matter plays the same role as white matter.C. Grey matter controls thinking in the brain.D. Both sexes have the same amount of white matter.27. What can we infer from the second and third paragraphs?A. Women prefer doing many things at a time.B. Men do better dealing with one job at a time.C. Women do not need to tell directions.D. Men have weaker spatial abilities.28.Which of the following do you agree with according to the fourth paragraph?A. Young boys may be stronger than young girls.B. More women take up jobs requiring speech skills.C. Women may have stronger feelings than men.D. Our ancestors needed more spatial skills.CChildren start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there's no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children's curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me"textbook questions "about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, "Now that we're finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?"After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, "Have you ever seen a grasshopper (蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?"This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours.Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their "wait time" to three seconds or more, children give more logical (符合逻辑的), complete and creative answers.Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved m a science discussion, don't jump in with "That's right" or "Very good". These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior . But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying "That's interesting" or "I'd never thought of it that waybefore", or coming up with more questions or ideas.Never push a child to "Think". It doesn't make sense, children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What's more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target (目标) for your disagreement.Lastly, show; don't tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass(放大镜), and they'll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates (蒸发), set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.29.According to the passage, children are natural scientists, and to raise their interest, the most important thing for adults to do is ____.A. to let them see the world aroundB. to share the children's curiosityC. to explain difficult phrases about scienceD. to supply the children with lab equipment30.According to the passage, children can answer questions in a more logical, completeand creative way if adults ________.A. ask them to answer quicklyB. wait for one or two seconds after a questionC. tell them to answer the next dayD. wait at least for three seconds after a question31.The author mentions all of the following techniques for adults to share with theirchildren's curiosity except that adults should ____.A. tell their children stories instead of reciting (背诵) factsB. offer their children chances to see things for themselvesC. be patient enough when their children answer questionsD. encourage their children to ask questions of their ownDTykoon is an online website that allows you to teach your child financial principles through allowances, assignment of tasks and daily chores. C.Go to the Heritage Center in Leavenworth.D.Watch a show at Performing Arts Center.BMost of us have lost our wallet at some stage in our lives. But few would imagine having it returned after a nearlysevendecade gap.Edward Parker dropped his wallet in 1950 into an inaccessible spot behind a bookshelf, while working as an electrician, repairing World War Ⅱ bomb damage in the palace. The wallet stayed there until this year when a builder, doing some restoration work, finally found it.The wallet is a time capsule. Its leather and webbing have long ago started to disintegrate. But it contains numerous pictures of family, invoices (发票),receipts, old union cards, results of a chest Xray (sent to him in 1948,the same year as the NHS was founded),a national service card dated 9 December 1944 and a medical insurance card. His business cards—E Parker,Electrical Contractor—seem almost original.Reflecting the typical methods of contact of the time, they have an address but no telephone number.A month ago I was speaking a press officer Lambeth Palace and he mentioned that the wallet had just been handed in.We thought it might be nice to try and work out whose it was and give it back to the family.Edward Parker is a pretty common name, but his medical card contained two places of residence—Poets Road and Springdale Road in north London. From this,Islington Council were able to find details of a marriage between Edward Parker and Constance Butler in 1947.That information was enough to work out that he was still alive and in a care home in Essex,so I went to visit him.Now 89,Edward has dementia (痴呆),but he was clearly happy to get the wallet and in particular, the photographs back.He pointed out pictures of his mother and father, his brother, his cousins and his wife Constance, who was with him when I visited. He hadn't seen a picture of his father since he lost the wallet,Constance,90,says.24.We can possibly infer that Edward Parker ________.A.once worked as an electrical technician B.always lost his walletC.once participated in World War ⅡD.once worked as a restoration builder 25.What's the main idea of Paragraph 2? A.The material of the wallet.B.The producer of the wallet.C.The contents of the wallet.D.The shape of the wallet.26.What does the underlined word“disintegrate” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Maintain. B.Damage.C.Disappear. D.Destroy. 27.What plays a key role in returning the wallet to its owner?A.Business card.B.National service card.C.Old union card.D.Medical card.CSome people are so rude!Who sends an email or a text message that just says “Thank you”?Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on Google? Don't these people realize that they're wasting your time?Maybe I'm the rude one for not appreciating life's little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don't make sense to people drowning in digital communication. In texts, you don't have to declare who you are or even say hello.Email, too,is slower than a text.V oice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect. My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to.Exasperated,he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned his phone calls.“Why are you leaving him voice mails?” my sister asked.“Just text him.”In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask onceacceptable questions about the weather forecast,a business's phone number,or directions to a house,a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thankyou email. How to handle these different standards? Easy:consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thankyou message.Others, like me,want no reply. The anthropologist (人类学家) Margaret Mead once said that in traditional societies, the young learn from the old.But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here's hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but thattimewasting forms of communication do. 28.What does the underlined word “Exasperated” mean in Paragraph 5? A.Annoyed. B.Worried. C.Surprised. D.Tired.29.Why didn't the author reply to his father?A.He didn't want to talk with his father. B.He liked text messages better.C.He didn't receive any voice mailmessages.D.He enjoyed checking his voice mails. 30.Which of the following does the author agree to?A.People needn't learn from one another in traditional societies.B.Declaring who they are or saying hello in texts is necessary.C.Dealing with voice mail should vary with each individual.D.People needn't turn to Google for help when in trouble.31.What's the best title of this passage? A.Nowadays: do you need a thankyou message?B.Nowadays: do you like leaving others avoice message?C.Nowadays: what should we do with text messages?D.Nowadays: what means should we use in communication?DGoogle is the world's largest search engine. But do you know that Google is also one of the world's largest energy consuming companies? It has one of the largest utility (公用程序) bills in the world and here's why.Google is by far the largest owner of computers in the puters are consuming more and more of the electricity that is used in the world today.Google is now finding ways to support its growth by relying on renewable energy. After all, technology is supposed to be a “clean industry”.Last week,Google announced that it has finalized contacts to buy 842 megawatts (百万瓦特) of wind and solar energy from plants in US,Chile and Sweden—nearly doubling its total clean energy capacity.842 megawatts is a lot of power. It is enough to power all the homes in the Denver metro area.By the way,it is also just enough to keep 15% of all Google data centers going! A data center is like a large warehouse with rows and rows of neatly stacked (堆叠的) computers. These computers are not like the ones in your home or school—each is a single “motherboard” with computer chips and storage, but no screens or DVD drives or speakers.Since most data centers are used to house server computers that run websites like Facebook and Google, they are also located near “Internet Backbones”—which means their Internet connection is a million times faster than yourhome.Google's_data_centers_are_big_power suckers. Until last year 37% of Google's energy was from renewable sources. They aim to take it to 100% by 2025.Google has about 40,000 search queries every second!
