I took a trip with my friends to Haleakala National Park, which lies in Hawaii. When we arrived at Haleakala National Park, we were suggested to watch the early morning sunrise. I was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon, so I could hardly wait to meet the sunrise. In the next morning, we all jumped out of the bed very early at 3 o’clock and walked to the rocks by the seaside. In the first half an hour, we imagined how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin, so we waited and waited. However, another half an hour later, I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness, and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends were still extremely cheerful.Nearly another one hour later, “Amazing!”, a word burst out from Judy and we all shouted to welcome the light orange greatness, which is really unbelievable. Until today, I dare say that it is the most impressive sunrise in my life. However, waiting in the morning darkness is also the one I can not wipe out forever.Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed determination, but what about the result after that? It might turn out to be pleased, unbelievable and satisfied. So, it is really worthwhile to wait for the best. (268 words)21. What can we learn from the passage?A. Work as hard as they might around the house, they are neither appreciated nor given enough to eat. It’s almost al ways a thin rice porridge that they get, while Jose and Esmeralda eat delicious fish curry.Very unhappy living with their brother, the two children want to leave as soon as possible. But Jose does not allow them to leave. He is afraid of what the neighbors might say.Opportunity presents itself in the form of Gomez, who works as a groom(马夫) for a rich woman, Dona Flavia. Which one is the main reason for teens drinking?A. pressureB. anxietyC. rebellingD. sadness31. What can we get from paragraph three?A. you can vote when you are 16.B. you must go to military when you are 18.C. alcohol was not difficult for teens to get.D. alcohol is legal for teens to purchase in America.32. What does the passage mainly tell us?A. the biggest reason for teens’ alcohol drinking.B.Drinking age should be lowered in America.C.Drinking age should be higher in America.D. the bad results of drinking alcohol for teens.CPeople use alcohol(酒精) for many reasons; peer pressure, celebration, anxiety, sadness etc. The present legal drinking age is twenty-one in America, but illegally drinking age is as low as zero. Why? It is the main question asked. I’m sure that the drinking age percentage would drop if the age is lowered.Few reasons for teens drinking are: peer pressure, enjoyment, etc. But the main reason for doing so is “breaking the law.” 87% of high school seniors have used alcohol. That means that a large quantity of teens under the age of seventeen to eighteen have used alcohol before. We all know why teens drink, Just the feel that they get of breaking the law. Being rebel(反叛的) and not following the rules is an important role of a teen’s life. However, it is illegal for young teens to buy it, they are able to get it through their parent’s own liquor cabinets or older friends who buy it for them. As we all see, it is not hard for teens to get alcohol. We have all heard of the famous saying “we want you to join the army and protect your country.” Well, you are telling me that I can legally kill someone at the age of eighte en, while I sign up with the military and go to war but I can’t have a sip of alcohol. In otherwords, if the age of voting and military sign up is eighteen, then drinking should also be eighteen. Drinking age in Australia is eighteen, and in UK is as low as sixteen in restaurants. Studies have showed that those teens/adults are perfectly fine. Drinking age should be lowered, and I know that by lowering it we can drop the percentage of teen alcohol abusers(滥用者).29. From paragraph 1, drinking in America_______.33. How many habits can you have after joining the activity finally?A.5B.3C.2D.134. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?A. Happy L.I.F.E is an international company.B. Those habits can be good for readers finally.C. The author mentioned another three habits.D. If you miss a start date, you must stop.35. Which of the following choices is true?A. The author will probably talk about compassion in paragraph 5B. A simple breathing exercise is the best way to live a happy life.C. When you are meditating, you have to find a perfect place.D. Saying “Thank you” means sending an email to someone every day.DWe’re inviting you, to be part of the Happy L.I.F.E. We hope that you’ll find all the activities of the Happy L.I.F.E. meaningful and put them to your daily positivity practices. By the end, you may just have five new habits that create greater satisfaction, or even a greater sense of happiness in your life.Paying attention to the following pointsIf you miss a start date –just jump right in with a positive intention(意图) to get started from right where you are. Or, if you’re already practicing one of the habits, we encourage you to combine your positive intentions with ours and we challenge you to go to the next level in the practice of your habit. For instance, if you’re already meditating(冥想), add compassion (热情) or self-discovery to your intentions.Saying “Thank you”The first activity that we invite you to do along with us, with the goal of making it a daily habit, is to send an email or note out to someone in your support system or network. Here’s a list of 100 things to thank people for that might help get you unstuck. And, it might also help to remember why it’s important to say “thank you” and how to make them most meaningful to the recipient.MeditatingThe next “happy habit” we’re building is the practice of meditation. If you’ve never meditated before, a simple breathing exercise is the best place to start. And, even if you don’t have the ideal, quiet and calm place in which to add a meditation break to your work or school day, you can still focus your intention on developing greater connectedness to your inner life and thoughts simply by slowly, gently breathing in and out, keeping your focus on your breaths. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

But what makes us really happy and what lasting benefits does happiness have?Well, earlier this month, scientists from the University of Illinois found the people who are happy and positive about life live longer. The researchers found "clear and compelling evidence" that happiness is key when it comes to better health and longer lifespans.Last month a British study, which tracked members of 40,000 households across the country, concluded that eating a family meal at least three times a week is the key to happiness because it helps build a strong bond between parents and their children. But happiness might be decided when you are born. Names can apparently predict how happy we are as individuals, with researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University claiming in 2009 that people called Judy and Joshua enjoy life the most. Ben, Andrew and Edward were seen as miserable names on the other hand.Married couples are most likely to be happy with their relationships, according to the study, which also found that the happiest relationships are those less than five years old between two university graduates who have no children.Research has also suggested that happiness begins at 50.A study from Stony Brook University, New York, found that stress, anger and worry fade after your 50th. Women were also reported to suffer greater stress, worry and sadness at all ages.Money makes the world go round, but it is not the key to happiness, according to other studies. In 2008, a survey from the Office for National Statistics found that British families were healthier and twice as well off as they were 20 years ago, but are no happier. However, other studies have found money can buy you happiness after all, but only if you spend it wisely. Indeed, that might be why a good holiday can boost your happiness levels "for up to two months" after - although the break has to be "very relaxing" to have such an effect.61. According to study, we can infer the probable cause of the unhappiness is ____. .A. stressB. worryC. angerD. all of the above62. Which is the happiest relationship?A. Married couplesB. Father’s day Sunset Live Music Dinner CruieCBefore meeting with my friend Leticia from Honduras, Central America, I would ask her if she was arriving according to North American time or Latin American time. Smiling, she would answer, "A la hora Latina, of course." This meant that she would be late. The concept of time is very different for Latin Americans than for North Americans.Life in the United States is fast-paced. There are fast food restaurants, overnight delivery services, shuttle services, instant cash machines, fast weight loss plans, and even instant minute rice. Keenly following such sayings as, "The early bird gets the worm," and, "First come, first served," North Americans even have their meals in an efficient manner. Microwaves help warm up their early breakfasts, noon lunches, and five-o'clock dinners."Time is money" for big businesses. Everyone follows set agendas(议事日程). Minutes are taken at meetings that are precisely scheduled. North Americans take pride in juggling busy work schedules and still finding time to spend with family and friends.Latin Americans stroll leisurely through life. They wander past open-air restaurants, across shaded patios tucked behind walls of Bougainvillea. In the cafes, the service is slow but courteous. Outside on the streets, people walk by, not for weight purposes, but to get somewhere. Buses arrive and depart on their own schedule, sometimes sooner or later than their printed times. And if you miss the bus, wait. One will come along eventually. Mid-morning breakfasts are homemade. Lunch is around three in the afternoon and dinner could be anytime after the arranged time. No one follows a set agenda, but business is accomplished at a gradual and comfortable pace. Watches are not followed precisely, and one barely ever hears the question, "What time is it?"This cultural difference has proven to be a problem for many North Americans visiting Latin American countries and vice versa. For example, this problem has escalated on the issue of adoption. While in Honduras the summer of 1989, I translated for couples from the United States who were looking for children to adopt from Central America. All legal procedures were transacted between a lawyer from the U.S. and a Honduran lawyer. Legal matters on the North American end were handled almost immediately. The Honduran lawyer, however, was considerably slower with field work and paper work and was unable to give definite dates or times for the completion of the adoption. This created a cultural barrier and added to the confusion of the situation.Without understanding these cultural differences, one could eventually feel offended. Having lived for five years in the Dominican Republic, I am able to understand the two concepts of time but am torn between them. People in the United States, while accomplishing much, need to live less by the clock and stroll throughmore of their days. Although Latin America can sometimes be very frustrating and remind us that, indeed, patience is a virtue, one should slow down long enough to enjoy life's simple pleasure. So whenever I am asked, "Why are you late?" I simply reply, "According to whose time?"70. Which is probably North Americans’ behavior?A. Walk to the destination even though it is far away.B. Have dinner at 9pm in the evening.C. Plan the meeting time precisely.D. Do business in a slow pace.71. If you invite a Latin American friend for a party at 8p.m., when will he/she be likely to arrive?A. After 8p.m..B. Before 8p.m..C. At 8p.m..D. Not come.72. That the writer gives an example of adoption is to show that ______.A. it is impossible for North Americans to adopt a child from Latin AmericaB. Latin American lawyers are incapableC. North Americans and Latin Americans can’t work togetherD. the different time concepts may cause difficulties in the cooperation betweenNorth Americans and Latin Americans73. What’s the writer’s opinion on North Americans’ and Latin Americans’ attitudes towards time?A. North Americans’ attitude is better.B. Both are good.C. Latin Americans’ attitude is better.D. Neither is good.74. What does the writer want to convey?A. It is important to learn about cultural differences.B. In this fast-pace society, we should learn to slow down and enjoy life.C. Patience is a virtue.D. We need to live by the clock in this competitive society.DBobby Moresco grew up in New York's Hell's Kitchen, a tough working-class neighborhood on Manhattan's West Side. But Hell's Kitchen lies right next door to Broadway, and the bright lights attracted Bobby from the time he was a teen. Being stage-struck was hardly what a street kid could admit to his partners. Fearing their ridicule, he told no one, not even his girlfriend, when he started taking acting lessons at age 17. If you were a kid from the neighborhood, you became a cop, construction worker, longshoreman or criminal. Not an actor.Moresco struggled to make that long walk a few blocks east. He studied acting, turned out for all the cattle calls -- and during the decade of the 1970s made a total of $2,000. "I wasn't a good actor, but I had a driving need to do something different with my life," he says.He moved to Hollywood, where he drove a cab and worked as a bartender. "My father said, 'Stop this craziness and get a job; you have a wife and daughter.' “But Moresco kept working at his chosen craft. Then in 1983 his younger brother Thomas was murdered in a mob-linked killing. Moresco moved back to his old neighborhood and started writing as a way to explore the pain and the patrimony of Hell's Kitchen. Half-Deserted Streets, based on his brother's killing, opened at a small Off-Broadway theater in 1988. A Hollywood producer saw it and asked him to work on a screenplay. His reputation grew, and he got enough assignments to move back to Hollywood. By 2003, he was again out of work and out of cash when he got a call from Paul Haggis, a director who had befriended him. Haggis wanted help writing a film about the country after September 11. The two worked on the writing, but every studio in town turned it down. They kept pitching it. Expecting a whole day to relax, he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch hisfavouri te TV talk show on his first day off in months. “This will be like a walk in the park,” he’d told his wife. “I’ll look after the kids, and you can go visit your mom.”Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids”—Mike, Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.” When food had not appeared within thirty seconds, Randy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum. Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat(节拍). Mike chanted “Where’s my toast, where’s my toast” in the background. Brad realized his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.Life became worse after breakfast. Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head. Randy locked himself in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants. Nobody could find clean socks, although they were before their very eyes. Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes. Brad knew the talk show had already started.By ten o’clock, things were out of control. Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter. Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils. Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands. Brad realised that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible. At exactly 11:17, Brad called the daycare centre (日托所).“I suddenly have to go into work and my wife’s away. However, dogs can’t offer advice or make you a cup of tea when you need one; and precious stones are cold comfort when you need a hug, and a shoulder to cry on.What are Friends? There are many ways to describe a friend. Friends are the family you can choose for yourself. Friends are a much better medication(医疗)than medication is, and people who spend time with friends are happier with their lives as they are less lonely.A good friend will put you to bed when you’re lost consciousness. Ensure you’re not laid on your back, and remember to remove your shoes. You should be able to tell a true friend anything without being judged by them. How do Friendships Begin? This is an easy question. Find someone else who has similar interests with you. You now have another person to talk to about your shared interest but remember they like to talk too, so be prepared to shut up and listen once in a while. Hopefully they will have other friends and will introduce you to them, thereby expanding your circle.Friendships which begin due to location, for example, next-door neighbors or school classmates, rarely survive transitions such as moving to other neighborhoods, schools, colleges, jobs, immigration, and so forth. Attend a school reunion and you’ll wonder what on earth you ever had in common with these people other than your age, although it is possible to have a friendship with someone you met at school. Mutually maintain it, and eventually become godparent or “uncle” to each others’ children. How Friendships are MaintainedTo have a friend you must also be a friend and be prepared to be there for them should they need you. Failure in this respect would label you a fair-weather friend and you would most probably be abandoned.BoundariesLike every other relationship you have in your life, there are boundaries you shouldn’t cross with your friends. One of those is money: Don’t lend to your friend and don’t ask for a loan yourself.Friends are unpaid counselors(顾问),but phoning them at 2 am because you’re awake and would like a chat is not a good idea. Neither is phoning them at 10 am if you know they’re a shift-worker. Friends are people who need some space and quiet time. Generally, it all boils down to mutual respect and understanding. It’s not a good plan to interrupt your friend while they’re on a date/onholiday/attending an orchestral recital/at a funeral.TrustTrust is the most vital element in any relationship. If you’re not trustworthy then you probably don’t deserve friends, so try to remember that you promised to see that dull film with them or applaud them at their first attempt at a karaoke or an Open Mic night. If you have promised to look after their clothes while they go for a bet, then make sure you do. You might like to carry enough cash to help them out too, as you never know when that situation might be reversed.Don’t lie to your friend: if they know you well they’ll know you’re lying or will at least be suspicious. If you find out something that you know will hurt your friend, be tactful(圆滑). Do they need to know? Would they appreciate knowing? Can you tell their mum so she can break the news? Cowardly, yes, but mums usually have a much better way with words. Remember, if you do decide to tell them and it’s painful, they will probably need some time alone, after lashing out at(抨击)the closest thing—you. In that case, play the waiting game. Then don’t beat them up about it afterwards.A Friend for LifeStrong friendships can last a lifetime with care and consideration. The benefits are multi-folds; you’ve got someone to share birthday cake with, and especiall y for single people, a pub meal or a trip to the cinema is no fun alone, is it? Plus it’s always nice to know there’s someone there for you, as you’re there for them, through the bad times as well as the good. Altogether now: Oh I get by with a little help from my friends. Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends.( )55.
