We feel that thereare many disadvantages in streaming (把---按能力分班) pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both bright and not-so-bright children. After all, it can be very discouraging to be at the bottomof the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellec tual ability. This is only one of their total personalities. We are concerned to develop the ability of all our pupils into the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work ingroups:this gives them opportunities to learn to co-operate, to share and to develop2leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think,to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupil learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individ ual tasks and assignment, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the libraries, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does no matter what age this child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.1.In this passage the author's attitude towards "mixed-ability teaching" is( C ).A. These cars will float along never touching the ground, and therefore will have no need for wheels.Annoying highway vibrations, caused by the rotations of the disc-and-tire wheels, will be things of the past. The coming highway passenger cars will literally fly above the road, supported on columns of air compressed by turbine-driven fans. The car without wheels has been called a "flying car", and, in a sense, that's just what it is;however, it will not back out of the family garage, start down the street, and then suddenly go quickly upward heading for some distant point. On the contrary, to avoid problems in aerial navigation, the wheelless vehicle probably will travel no more than three inches above road surface. It will travel over fairly rough road and even over smooth water! The inevitable problems of maritime regulations, severe weather conditions, and running out of fuel in remote areas all will require new concepts of operation, servicing, and vehicle regulation.1.The author believes that cars of the future CA. will be replaced by airplanesB. will have wheels unlike those of todayC. will use columns of air instead of wheelsD.will use wheels without tires2.Which of the following is true concerning the new car? BA. It doesn't need fuel any more.3B. It will be influenced by weather conditions.C. No family garage is needed any longer.D. The speed of a flying car will be comparable to that of an airplane.3.The car without wheels has been called a "flying car" because AA. it travels a few inches above the groundB. it can fly as a plane doesC. it moves at a very high speedD. it can travel over smooth water4.Where is a wheelless car LEAST fit to travel? DA. Over soft land.B. Over rough country roads.C. Over highways.D. Over waterfalls.5.Wheelless cars will BA. eliminate all traffic problemsB. create new traffic problemsC. eliminate parking problemsD. Both A and CⅢ. Why or why not?2.What is your attitude toward football fans?3.You are a non-English major student, how do you learn English?4. Do you think English should be the intrenational language in the world?5.What challenges do you think you may face after retirement?ⅡReading comprehensions.(共10题,每小题2分,满分20分)Passage AThere are many factors which may have an influence on adults and children being able to lead a healthy life.Nowadays, people are very busy. Often, both parents work outside the home. Children are expected to take on more responsibility at home to help their parents. They also have sporting and leisure activities as well as school expectations. The busyness also adds another factor: the need to use cars to get from one place to another quickly.Today, society places a lot of emphasis on technology. Computers, DVDs. CDs, television, PlayStations and Xboxes have become major leisure activities, rather than traditional more active pursuits. This has led to a more sedentary lifestyle. The media provide entertainment and information. Unfortunately, they also promote fast food which fits easily into busy lifestyles. It is much more convenient at times to buy a quick takeaway rather than prepare a meal. The media constantly bombard(轰炸) their audience with ‘perfect’ body images, the need to buy the most fashionable clothes, the most up-to-date computer games, the best places to visit and the best things to do.Environments vary. We may be exposed to pollution , such as cigarette smoke. This can be harmful to people who suffer from breathing difficulties. Environments where passive smoking is unavoidable make it difficult to lead a healthy life.It is important factor influencing healthy lifestyles is motivation. Or the desire to be healthy. Any person who wants to be healthy will find a way to be healthy —if he/she is motivated enough!6. The passage is mainly about _____.A. benefits of a healthy life styleB. demands of daily lifeC. factors affecting a healthy lifestyleD. a positive approach to healthy living7. The word “sedentary” in Paragraph 4 probable means _____.A. having a lot of things to doB. involving little exercise or physical activityC. being isolated from the outside worldD. experiencing a lot of stress8. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as a factor leading to the popularity of fast food?A. Cheap price.B. The media.C. Busy lifestyle.D. Convenience9. Which is NOT listed as a factor influencing the ability to have a healthy lifestyle?A.Pollution.B.Economic factors.C.Dependence upon cars.D.Influence of family or friends.10. According to the author, _____ may be the most important factor influencing healthy lifestyles.A. technologyB. cultural backgroundC. environmentD. the desire to be healthyPassage BInterest in pursuing international careers has soared in recent years, enhanced by chronic (长久的) personnel shortages that are causing companies to search beyond their home borders for talent.Professionals seek career experience outside of their home countries for a variety of reasons. They may feel the need to recharge their batteries with a new challenge. They may want a position with more responsibility that encourages creativity and initiative. Or they may wish to expose their children to another culture, and the opportunity to learn a second language. When applying for a job, one usually has to submit a resume or curriculum vitae (CV). The two terms generally mean the same thing: a one-or two-page document describing one’s educational qualifications and professional experience. However, guidelines for preparing a resume are constantly changing. The best advice is to find out what is appropriate regarding the corporate (公司) culture, the country culture, and the culture of the person making the hiring decision. The challenge will be to embrace two or more cultures in one document. The following list is a good place to start.●“Educational requirements differ from country to country. In almost every case of ‘cross-border’job hunting, just stating the title of your degree will not bean adequate description. Provide the reader with details about your studies and any related experience.”●Pay attention to the resume format you use-chronological or reverse-chronological order. Chronological order means listing your ‘oldest’ work experience first. Reverse-chronological order means listing your current or most recent experience first. Most countries have preferences about which format is most acceptable. If you find no specific guidelines, the general preference is for the reverse-chronological format.”●If you are submitting your resume in English, find out if the recipient (收件人) uses British English or American English because there are variations between the two versions. For example, university education is often referred to as ‘tertiary education’ in the U nited Kingdom, but this term is almost never used in the United States. A reader who is unfamiliar with these variations may assume that your resume contains errors.11. Companies are hiring more foreign employees because ________.A.they find foreign employees are usually more talentedB.they need original ideas from employees hired overseasC. they want to expand their business beyond home bordersD.they have difficulty finding qualified personnel at home12.The author believes that an individual who applies to work overseas ________.A. is usually creative and full of initiativeB. aims to improve his foreign language skillsC. is dissatisfied with his own life at homeD.seeks either his own or his children’s development13.When it comes to resume writing, it is best to ________.A. take cultural factors into considerationB. learn about the company’s hiring processC.follow appropriate guidelines for job huntingD. know the employer’s personal likes and dislikes14.When writing about qualifications, applicants are advised to ________.A.stress their academic potential to impress the decision makerB. give the title of the university degree they have earned at homeC. provide a detailed description of their study and work experiencesD. highlight their keen interest in pursuing a ‘cross-border’ career15.According to the author’s last piece of advice, the applicants should be aware of ________.A. the different educational systems in the US and the UKB.the differences between the varieties of EnglishC.the recipient’s preference with regard to the formatD.the distinctive features of American and British culturesIII Translation. If you do not, you could be fined up to $50. It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear your belt. But it will be the driver’s responsibility to make sure that children under 14 do not ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind. However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing your vehicle; or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle; or if you have a valid medical certificate which excuses you from wearing it, Make sure these circumstances apply to you before you decide not to wear your seat belt. In no case is the happiness of the animal at the heart of the matter. If you do want to own a wild animal, for instance a fox( usually a little larger than your average house cat) , you have to take this test first: go to your nearest Humane Society Shelter(动物保护协会) and bring home a grown cat and a very active dog. Raise them and be with them, consider them your best friends. Do not leave them alone for more than 9 hours in any given day, do not hit them or shout at them; and do not abuse them in any way. If, after two years, both animals are alive and are still with you without your caging them or locking them in a part of your home most of day, then maybe you have what it takes to own a wild animal. If the test sounds stupid or unworkable, or if you just can’t bring yourself to stand such unlovable animals for two years, then you are not suited to owning a fox.The problem her is in the definition of the word pet. A pet is something you keep in your house or around your yard as a companion—a companion who is usually prevented from escaping one way or anther, Some animals—dogs and cats, will voluntarily stay with a human even if given the chance to get away. In this sense, dogs and cats are true pets. Please don’t make the life of some wild animals a living hell by trying to raise one as a pet.51、Which reason is true for people keeping a wild animal as a pet in the passage?A They want to show off to other peopleB Wild animals are orderlyC They just want to keep a wild animal for business purposeD They love wild animals heartily52、To pass the test, you must make it certain that .A you take the trying animals with you most of the timeB you are kind to the trying animalsC the trying animals are still in good condition in two yearsD all of the above53、It can be inferred that of all the animals mentioned in the passage a is the most difficult oneto keep as a pet.A wild pigB foxC tigerD dog54、According to the author, you can raise a wild animal if you .A think the test ridiculousB can’t bear dogs and catsC may work more than 9 hoursD may raise the trying animals well for 2 years55、What does the word “ hell” in the last sentence mean?A the miserable place after deathB A place of great sufferingC Sufferers in a miserable placeD Evil and dark forces四、Translation(20分,每小题2分)A) From Chinese into English(10分)(56)关于你的求职申请,我们会在三天之后给你答复。

2009年6月20日大学英语四级(CET-4)真题试卷A卷真题

2009年6月20日大学英语四级(CET-4)真题试卷A卷真题

2009年6月20日大学英语四级(CET-4)真题试卷A卷真题Dpositive difference such training can make.“During my Mindsets coaching session, I was taught how to recruit a diversified workforce. I recruited people from different cultures and skill sets. The agents were able to utilize their full potential and experiences to build up the company. When the real estate teethes began to change, it was because we had a diverse agent pool that we were able to say in the real estate market much longer than others in the same profes sion.”‘Blinded by GenderDale is an account executive who attended one of my workshops on supervising a diverse workforce. “Through one of the sessions, I discovered my personal bias,” he recalls. “I learned I had not been looking at a person as a whole p erson, and being open to differences.” In his case, the blindness was not about culture but rather gender.“I had a management position open in toy department; and the two finalists were a man and a woman. lied I not attended this workshop, I would have automatically assumed the man was the best candidate because the position required quite a bit of extensive travel. My reasoning would have been that even though both candidates were great and could have been successful in the position, I assumed the woman would have wanted to he home with her children and not travel.” Dale’s assumptions are another example of the well-Intentioned but incorrect thinking that limits an organization’s ability to tap into the full potential of a diverse workforce.“I learned fro m the class that instead of imposing my gender biases into the situation. I needed to present the full range of duties, responsibilities and expectations to all candidates and allots them to make an informed decision.” Dale credits the workshop, “because i t helped me make decisions based on fairness.”Year of the Know-It-AllDoug is another supervisor who attended one of my workshops. Fie recalls a major lesson learned from his own employee.“One of my most embarrassing moments was when I had a Chinese-American employee put in a request to take time off to celebrate Chinese New Year. In my ignorance, I assumed he had his dates wrong’, as the first of January had just passed. When I advised him of this, I gave him a tong talking-to about turning in requests early with the proper dates.“He patiently waited, then when I was done, he said he would like Chinese New Year off, not the Western New Year. He explained politely that in his culture the new year did not begin January first, and that Chinese New Year, which is tiedto the lunar cycle, is one of the most celebrated holidays on the Chinese calendar. Needless to say, I felt very embarrassed in assuming he had his dates mixed up. But I learned a great deal about assumptions, and that the timing of holidays varies considerably from culture to culture.“Attending the diversity workshop helped me realize how much I could learn by simply asking questions and creating dialogues with toy employees, rather thanmaking assumptions and trying to be a know-it-all,” Doug admits. “The biggest thing I took away from the workshop is learning how to be more ‘inclusive’ to differences.”A Better Bottom LineAn open mind about diversity not only improves organizations internally, it is profitable as well. These comments from a customer service representative show how an inclusive attitude can improve sales. “Most of my customers speak English as a second language. One of the best things my company has done is to contract with a language service that offers translations over the p hone. It wasn’t until my boss received Mindsets’ training that she was able to understand how important inclusiveness was to customer service. As a result, Oct customer base has increased.”Once we start to see people as individuals, and discard the stereotypes, we can move positively toward inclusiveness for everyone. Diversity is about coming together and taking advantage of our differences and similarities. It is about building better communities and organizations that enhance us as individuals and reinforce our shared humanity. When we begin to question our assumptions and challenge what we think we have learned from Oct past, from the media, peers, family, friends, etc., toe begin to realize that some of our conclusions are flawed(有缺陷的) or contrary to our fundamental values. We need to van) ourselves to think differently, shift our mindsets and realize that diversity opens doors for all of us, creating opportunities in organizations and communities that benefit everyone.注意:此部分试题请在答题卡1上作答。

Each passage is followed by five questions or statements. Choose the best answer to each question or decide T/F for each statement. Passage OneMany people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance—halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.(1) Which of the following statements is NOT true? _(A) People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.(B) All the people who work in London prefer to live in the country.(C) Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.(D) Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.(2) With the same money needed for________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country.(A) getting a small flat with a garden(B) having a small flat with a garden(C) renting a small flat without a garden(D) buying a small flat without a garden(3) When the garden is in blossom, that one ________ has been rewarded.(A) living in the country(B) having spent time working in the garden(C) having a garden of his own(D) having been digging, planting and watering(4) People who think happiness lies in the city life would feel that _______ if they had to live outside London.(A) their life was meaningless(B) their life was invaluable(C) they didn’t deserve a happy life(D) hey were not worthy of their happy life(5) The underlined phrase get away from in the 3rd paragraph refers to ________.(A) deal(B) do away with(C) escape from(D) prevent away3.Passage TwoThere are three kinds of goals: short—term, medium—range and long—term goals. Short—term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long—term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short—term goals. Upon completing our short—term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short—term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short—term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase. Long —term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long—term goal to limit us or our course of action.(1) Our long—term goals mean a lot ________.(A) If we cannot reach solid short—term goals(B) If we complete the short—term goals(C) if we have dreams of the future(D) if we put forward some plans(2) New short—term goals are built upon ________.(A) a daily basis(B) your achievement in a week(C) current activities(D) the goals that have been completed(3) When we complete each step of our goals, ________.(A) we will win final success(B) we are overwhelmed(C) we should build up confidence of success(D) we should have strong desire for setting new goals(4) What is the main idea of this passage?(A) Life is a dynamic thing.(B) We should set up long—term goals.(C) Different kinds of goals in life.(D) The limitation of long—term goals.(5) Which of the following statements is wrong according to the passage?(A) The long—term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid(B) The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals.(C) Life is a static thing, thus we should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.(D) We should often add new short-term goals to those which have been completed.4.Passage Three“Tear’em apart!”“Kill the fool!”“Murder the referee(裁判)!”There are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let’s not kid ourselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed. Volumes have been written about the way words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain connotations(含义) may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior. I see the term “opponent”as one of those words. Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports terms. The dictionary meaning of the term “opponent”is “adversary”“enemy”and “one who opposes your interests”. Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to take every action, no matter how gross it is. I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player?s request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player proceeded to rub his gloves across his wet T—shirt and then exclaimed, “Are they wet enough now?”In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the consequences that such a move might have on anyone in their way. I have also witnessed a player reaching to his opponent’s intentional and illegal blocking by deliberately hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good friends. Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which departs from normal behavior. Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated(提升) the game to the level where it belongs, thereby setting an example to the rest of the sporting world. Replacing the term “opponent”with “associate”could be an ideal way to start. The dictionary meaning of the term “associate”is “colleague”“friend”and “companion”. Reflect a moment! You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term “associate”rather than “opponent”.(1) Which of the following statements best expresses the author's view?(A) The words people use can influence their behavior.(B) Unpleasant words in sports are often used by foreign athletes.(C) Aggressive behavior in sports can have serious consequences.(D) Unfair judgments by referees will lead to violence on the sports field.(2) Gross actions are taken during games because the players_______.(A) are too eager to win(B) treat their rivals as enemies(C) are usually short—tempered and easily offended(D) cannot afford to be polite in fierce competitions(3) What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves?(A) He angrily hit the referee with a ball(B) He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T—shirt.(C) He claimed that referee was unfair(D) He refused to continue the game(4) What is the meaning of the word “court”(Para. 4)?(A) please where trials are held(B) official residence of a sovereign(C) space marked for sports(D) courtyard(5) The author hopes to have the current situation in sports improved by ______.(A) regulating the relationship between players and referees(B) calling on players to use clean language in the court(C) raising the referee’s sense of responsibility(D) changing the attitude of players on the sports field5.Passage FourThe French word “renaissance”means rebirth. It was first used in 1855 by the historian Jules Michelet in his History of France, and then adopted by historians of culture, by art historians, and eventually by music historians, all of whom applied it to European culture during the 150 years spanning 1450-1600. The concept of rebirth was appropriate to this period of European history because of the renewed interest in ancient Greek and Roman culture that began in Italy and then spread throughout Europe. Scholars and artists of this period wanted to restore the learning and ideals of the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. To these scholars this meant a return to human. Fulfillment in life became a desirable goal, and expressing the entire range of human emotions and enjoying the pleasures of the senses were no longer frowned on. Artists and writers now turned to religious subject matter and sought to make their worksunderstandable and appealing. These changes in outlook deeply affected the musical culture of the Renaissance period —how people thought about music as well as the way music was composed and experienced. They could see the architectural monuments, sculptures, plays, and poems that were being rediscovered, but they could not actually hear ancient music —although they could read the writings of classical philosophers, poets, essayists, and music theorists that were becoming available in translation. They learned about the power of ancient music to move the listener and wondered why modern music did not have the same effect. For example, the influential religious leader Bernardino Cirillo expressed disappointment with the music of his time. He urged musicians to follow the example of the sculptors, painters, architects, and scholars who had rediscovered ancient art and literature. The musical Renaissance in Europe was more a general cultural movement and state of mind than a specific set of musical techniques. Furthermore, music changed so rapidly during this century and a half —though at different rates in different countries—that we cannot define a single Renaissance style.(1) Which statement is NOT true about the “Renaissance”?(A) It began from 1450 and came to an end in 1600.(B) It originated in Italy and then spread throughout Europe.(C) People wanted to achieve nothing in life.(D) Artists and writers showed interest in religious subject matter.(2) The phrase “frowned on”(para.1) is closest in meaning to_____.(A) disapproved of(B) forgotten about(C) argued about(D) given up(3) It can be inferred from the passage that thinkers of Renaissance were seeking a rebirth of _____.(A) communication among artists across Europe.(B) spirituality in everyday life(C) a cultural emphasis on human values(D) religious themes in art that would accompany the traditional secular(世俗的) themes.(4) According to the passage, why was Bemaradino Cirillo disappointed with the music of his time?(A) It was not complex enough to appeal to musicians.(B) It had little emotional impact on audiences.(C) It was too dependent on the art and literature of his time.(D) It did not contain enough religious themes.(5) Which of the following is mentioned in the passage as a reason for the absence of a single Renaissance musical style?(A) The musical Renaissance was defined by technique rather than style.(B) The musical Renaissance was too short to give rise to a new musical style.(C) Renaissance musicians adopted the styles of both Greek and Rome musicians.(D) During the Renaissance, music never remained the same for very long.6.Part III Grammar and Vocabulary (20 points)Directions: There are ten incomplete sentences in this part.
