Good communication is vital in modern society. We know that much of the communication is unspoken. Consciously or unconsciously, we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes. Your good qualities can make good communication. The personal qualities include:physical appearance, energy, rate of speech, pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expressiveness of eyes, and the ability to hold the interest of others. What should we do so that our communication will be effective? Here are my suggestions.Firstly, you should be yourself. The trick is to be consistently you, at your best. The most effective people never change character from one situation to another. They’re the same whether they’re having a conversation with their close friends, addressing their garden club or being interviewed for a job. They communicate with their whole being.Secondly, whether you’re talking to one person or one hundred, always remember to look at them. Don’t break eye contact while talking. As you enter a room, move your eyes comfortably, then look directly at those in the room and smile. This shows clearly that you are at ease. Smiling is important. The best type of smile and eye contact is gentle and comfortable, not forced. You should also absorb other people before showing yourself. You can’t learn anything when you talk. When you attend a meeting, a party or an interview, don’t immediately start throwing your opinions. Stop for a second. Absorb what’s going on. What’s the mood of the others—are they down, up, happy, expectant? Are they eager to learn from you, or do they show resistance? If you can sense what’s happening with others, you will be better able to reach them. So, listen before you talk. The fourth suggestion is that you focus your energy. How do you get your energy up? Before the meeting, collect your thoughts about the goal of the meeting—yours and the other’s. Once you go through the doorway, no longer think about yourself. Focus on the person you are meeting to find out what he is interested in. Properly collected energy comes across when we sincerely believe something. When you speak with energy, you are involved with your audience and your message. You create an air of certainty. The audience may disagree with you, but they can’t question your belief.Lastly, I would like to remind you that you should lighten up. Take a good hard look at your self. Do you say “I”too often? Are you only concentrated on your own problems? Do you complain frequently? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, you need to be more relaxed.and smile ●Present a gentle and comfortable(73) ▲.●(74) ▲yourself to smile.Listen before (75) ▲Stop for a short time to know theothers’ mood and what is happeningwith them.Begin your talk immediately.Focus your (76) ▲●Remain (77) ▲and thinkclearly and carefully before themeeting.●Focus on the person you’re meeting.Think about yourself.Lighten up Try to be (78) ▲. ●Say “I” too often.●Concentrate on your ownproblems.●Make too (79) ▲complaint. Conclusion Good communication (80) ▲on good personal qualities.2请认真阅读以下短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

09届高考英语(任务型阅读)题库(一)At the beginning of the twentieth century, many people thought that the American family was falling apart. A century later, we know that this was not the case. However, although the family is still alive in the United States, its size and shape were very different 100 years ago.In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were mainly two types of families in the United States: the extended and the nuclear. The extended family usually includes grandparents, parents, and children living under the same roof. The nuclear family consists of only parents and children.Today there are many different kinds of families. Some people live in “traditional” families, that is, a stay-home mother, a working father, and their own biological children. Others live in two-paycheck families, single-parent families, adoptive or foster, families, blended families (where men and women who were married before marry again and combine the children from previous marriages into the new families),child less families, and so on.What caused the structure of the family to change? In the early 1900s the birthrate began to fall and the divorce rate began to rise. Women were suddenly choosing to go to college and take jobs outside the home. In the 1930s and 1940s, many families faced serious financial, or money problems during the Great Depression, when many people lost their jobs. During World War II (1939-1945),5 million women were left alone to take care of their homes and their children. Because many men were at war, thousands of these "war widows" had to go to work outside their home.During the next ten years, the situation changed. There were fewer divorces, and people married at a younger age and had more children than the previous generation. It was unusual for a mother to work outside the home during the years when her children were growing tip. Families began leaving cities and moving into single-family homes in the suburbs. The traditional family seemed to be returning. In the years between 1960s and 1990s, there were many important changes in the structure of the family. From the 1960s to the early 1970s, the divorce rate doubled and the birthrate fell by half. The number of single-parent families tripled, and the number of couples living together without being married doubled again. In fact, the single-parent household, once unusual, has replaced the "traditional" family as the typical family in the States. If we can judge from history, however, this will probably change again in the twenty-first century. The Changes of the American Family1. kinds/ types2. main3. namely4. more5.periods6. lack7. birthrate8. fewer9. occurred 10. temporary(二)The family sphere(范围) used to be defined by its isolation from the public realm. There was the public male realm(领域)of "rational accomplishment" and cruel competition, and the private female and child-rearing sphere of home, intuition(直觉)and emotion. The private realm was supposed to be isolated from the realities of adult life. For both better and worse, television and other electronic media tend to break down the difference between those two worlds. The membrane around the family sphere is much more permeable(可渗透的). TV takes public events and transforms them into dramas that are played out in the privacy of our living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms.Parents used to be the channel through which children learned about the outside world. They could decide what to tell their children and when to tell it to them. Since children learn to read in stages, books provide a kind of natural screening process, where adults can decide what to tell and not tell children of different reading abilities. Television destroyed the system that separated adult from child knowledge and separated information into year-by-year slices for children of different ages. Instead, it presents the same information directly to children of all ages, without going through adult filters. So television presents a real challenge to adults. While a parent can read a newspaper without sharing it with children in the same room, television is accessible to everyone in that space. And unlike books, television doesn't allow us to flip(翻转)through it and see what's coming up. We may think we're giving our children a lesson in science by having them watch the Challenger takeoff, and then suddenly they learn about death, disaster and adult mistakes.Books allow adults to discuss privately what to tell or not tell children. This also allows parents to keep adult material secret from children and keep their secret keeping secret. Take that same material and put it on The Today Show and you have 800,000 children hearing the very things the adults are trying to keep from them. "Television takes our kids across the globe before parents give them permission to cross the street."More importantly, children gradually learn that adults are worried and anxious about being parents. Actually, television has also places families under a lot of stress. How Television Changes Childhood?1. Homes2. public3.connected4.indirectly5.books6.difference7. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion? In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences. In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts. Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship. In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others. Are Modern People Becoming More Selfish?1.Values2. place3. concerned4. However, the image of product and the consuming circumstance have become the key points to attract customer awareness and stimulate their buying needs. Frequently, customers buy goods just because they are cute, lovely and unique. With a less emphasis on functional utilities, the experience and imaginative space are placed into an increasingly important role. The image of product is emphasized, as well as the communication between products and consumers. “Customer behavior, which appears to be focused and directed at the object and at pleasure, in fact responds to quite different objectives: displaced expression of desire, and the production of a code of social values through the use of differential signs”(Baudrillard) . The reason for image-oriented customer behavior is probably that customers‟ lifestyle has been continuously virtualized by paying much attention to “Virtual Reality”. The evidences can be traced from computer games and Hollywood movies, in which customers‟ preference for fleeing reality is perfectly matched. This change requires us to take efforts to enhance product image by integrating style, color, taste, shape and material, and communicate with customers creatively, imaginatively and innovatively, and enable them to enjoy the distinctive experience image brings. “[A] need is not a need for a particular object as much as it is a …need‟ for difference” ( Baudrillard). The typical example is Apple Computer‟s IMAC, which has strong visual impact and outstanding dynamics. By this way, customer relationship can be set up through image, and brand can be treated as living that can transform people. Other examples commonly used are Disney Fairyland and Las Vegas, where new experience and imagination are fully demonstrated. In sum, consumption is negotiation, a never-ending conversation held in the languages of advertising, packaging, branding, fashion, and entertainment.More Attention to the Image of Product1.concerned/ cared2. use/ function3. attracted4.image5. ways6. stressedmunication8. reason9. lifestyle 10. Michael in Shanghai says he is 26 and has battled obesity for most of his life.Obesity , a severe weight problem, is a complex condition. A doctor may advise taking medicine along with changing one‟s behaviors. Experts say that the most successful weight—loss plans include a well-balanced diet and exercise.People who want to avoid weight gain have to balance the number of calories they eat with the number of calories they use. To lose weight, you can reduce the number of calories you take in, increase the number you use, or both.A recent study looked at four of the most popular dieting plans in the US. Researchers at Stanford University in California studied over 300 overweight women, mostly in their thirties and forties. Each woman went on one of the four plans: Atkins, The Zone, Ornish or LEARN. The women attended diet classes and received written information about the food plans. At the end of the year, the women on the Atkins diet had lost the most, more than four andone-half kilograms on average. They also did better on tests for cholesterol levels and blood pressure.Christopher Gardner, who led the study, says the Atkins diet may be more successful because of its simple message to eat less sugar. He also says that the advice to increase protein in the diet leads to more satisfying meals. He says that there was not enough money to study men, but that men would probably have similar results.Last week, another report based on thirty-one studies suggested that only a small minority of people have long-term success with dieting. Most dieters regained their lost weight within five years and often they become more overweight. But those who kept the weight off generally were the ones who exercised.Title: 1.___________to lose weightKey: 1. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming (把… It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade! Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect for their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to cooperate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.Keys: 1. academic ability 2. social skills 3. mixed-ability 4. take into account 5. discourage6. contribute to7. leadership skills8. personal problems9. effectively 10. as well as(七)There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外在的) result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language—all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.By contrast (对照) , the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have , and their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept. In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow.Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences.Do wethink we‟re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt (适应) change or that we‟re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all. These feelings of insecurity (不安全) and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow.If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.Keys: 1. Growth 2. measured 3. much more difficult 4. get a rise 5. their grades 6. caution or courage 7. in new ways 8. new challenges 9. take risks10. unfamiliar experiences(八)Without most people realizing it, there has been a revolution in office work over the last ten years. Before that time, large computers were only used by large, rich companies that could afford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small computers have come onto the market, which are capable of doing the work that used to be done by much larger and expensive computers, so now most smaller companies can use themThe main development in small computers has been in the field of word processors (处理器) , or WPS as they are often called. 40% of British offices are now estimated to have a word processor and this percentage is growing fast. There are many advantages in using a word processor for both secretary and manager. The secretary is freed from a lot of daily work, such as re-typing letters and storing papers. He or she can use this time to do other more interesting work for the boss. From a manager‟s point of view, secretarial time is being made better use of and money can be saved by doing daily jobs automatically outside office hours. But is it all good? If a lot of daily secretarial work can be done automatically, surely this will mean that fewer secretaries will be needed. Another worry is the increasing medical problems related to work with visual display units (显示器). The case of a slow loss of sight among people using word processors seems to have risen greatly. It is also feared that if a woman works at a VDU for long hours, the unborn child in her body might be killed. Safety screens to put over a VDU have been invented but few companies in England bother to buythem.Whatever the arguments for and against word processor, they are a key feature (特征) of this revolution in office practice.Keys: 1. replace 2. most smaller companies 3.improved 4.disadvantages 5.daily work6. The boss/manager7.money8. secretaries9. lose sight 10.might be killed(九)If you and your friends wish to share a secret, you can write it in code, and no one else will be able to read it. Codes are one way of writing in secrets. Ciphers(暗码) are another. In the code each word is written as a secret code or word number. In a cipher each letter is changed.Codes and ciphers have played an important role in the history of the word. Julius Caesar, the Roman ruler who defeated almost all the countries in Europe about 2000years ago, used a cipher when he sent secret messages to his troops. During American Revolution, George Washington‟s spies used a kind of code to send him information about the enemy before his military(军事的)action. In World War 2,the American “broke”,or figured out, Japan‟s most important navy codes and got enough information to destroy a powerful Japanese fleet(舰队)。

I greet the Chinese people and the people of the world," Zhai said ashe climbed out of the craft at around 16:40 Beijing time, a historic achievement telecast live on CCTV. Tens of millions of Chinese viewers gathered before TV screens to watch the moment.Chinese President Hu Jintao and other top leaders had appeared at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center to watch the live transmission of Zhai's spacewalk.Zhai, 42, chosen by an expert team for the first "out-of-capsule activity," showed a red national flag, helped by colleague Liu Boming, who also briefly popped his head out of the capsule.Zhai slowly made his way towards a test sample of solid lubricant(润滑剂)outside the capsule, took a sample and handed it to Liu.Zhai safely returned inside the craft after about 20 minutes. The walk marked the highpoint of China's third manned space journey, which has received widespread media coverage.Zhai wore a $4.4 million Chinese-made suit weighing 120-kg. Liu wore a Russian-made one and acted as an assistant. The third crew member, Jing Haipeng, monitored the ship from inside the re-entry module. w.wThe risky maneuver is a step towards China's longer-term goal of building a space lab and then a larger space station, analysts said."On this flight, Chinese people's footprints will be left in space for the first time," said a commentary(评论)by the Xinhua news agency. The astronauts went aboard on their walk after receiving a clean bill of health from doctors on the ground at mission control in Beijing, Xinhua said.Zhai's suit has 10 layers and takes up to 15 hours to assemble and put on.China's first manned spaceflight was in 2003. A second, two-manned flight followed in 2005. The only other countries that have sent people into space are Russia and the United States.Shenzhou VII took off on Thursday and is due to land on the northern steppes(草原) of Inner Mongolia on Sunday.1. 2009 年高考英语阅读理解和任务型阅读课堂综合练习十
A A punctual person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment. The unpunctual man, on one hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time. He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name. A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be regained. Time is more valuable than material things. In fact, time is life itself. The unpunctual man is fo r ever wasting and mismanaging his most valuable asset (财产) as well as other’s. The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters, or return calls or keep appointments promptly. But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it. He knows that he can not get through his huge amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every piece of work when it has to be attended to. Failure to be punctual in keeping one’s appointments is the sign of disrespect towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time, he keeps all the other guests waiting for him. Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to the host and all other guests present. Unpunctuality, moreover, is very harmful when it comes to do one’s duty, whether public or private. Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or fellow men. 1. What does the author think is the main difference between a punctual person and an unpunctual person? A. A punctual person does everything ahead of time while an unpunctual person does everything behind schedule. B. A punctual person does everything at the right time while an unpunctual person seldom does anything at the correct time. C. A punctual person has a lot of appointments while an unpunctual person has few appointments. D. A punctual person has much time to do everything while an unpunctual person has little time to do anything. 2. According to the passage, the main reason that a person is always unpunctual is that _______. A. he has more work to do than other people B. he is always in a hurry when he works C. he doesn’t care much about time D. he always mismanages and wastes his time

(11-20)11In the past 100 years Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing U.S. minority. As their children began moving up through the nation's schools, it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was forming . Their achievements are reflected in the nation's best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their education abroad arrived in the U.S. with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college. Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree. Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework. Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian Culture that promotes success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize education. Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they form a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social separation. Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.12The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of colon. Different cultures are more likely to cause certain different illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illnesses is not a new discovery. In 1945, about 60 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates(硝酸盐), commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives(添加剂), caused cancer. Yet, these additives which cause cancer remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and living animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the13Are your children being bullied on the Internet and you don’t kno w what to do about it? You are not alone. One in four children in the United Kingdom was the victim of online bullying in 2007. Cyberbullying(电脑化欺辱)is yet another problem that parents and children are facing in this new Internet age.Cyberbullying involves the use of information and technology such as e-mail, instant messaging, and personal web sites that are used to support conscious, repeated, and hostile(敌对的) behavior by one or more people with the intent to harm others.According to one victim, the difference between being bullied at school and being bullied on the Internet is that you cannot get away from cyberbullying as easily. Cyberbullying follows you, even after you get home from school. There is hope. Here are some tips to help you protect your children against cyberbullying.Make sure your children do not respond to rude and troublesome e-mails, messages, and postings. Keep a record of them in case you need proof. Call law enforcement and inform your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if necessary.Use web sites that translate the lingoes(行话) your children are sending or receiving so that you can understand the words that are being used in e-mails and chat rooms. If your children continue to receive troublesome e-mails, have them delete their current accounts and open a new one. This new e-mail address should only be given to a few people they can trust with it.If your children are receiving troublesome messages through instant messaging, help them make use of the “block” or “ban” feature. This feat ure can be used to block certain individuals from being able to reach your child. If you have found that a cyberbully has set up a web site that is bullying your child, contact your ISP and, if necessary, also inform law enforcement to try to get that web site removed.Get your child’s school involved. Learn what the school’s policy on cyberbullying is, and14If your family is like many in the United States, unloading the week’s groceries includes hauling a case or two of bottled water into your home. On your way to a soccer game or activity, it’s easy to grab a cold one right out of the fridge, right? But all those plastic bottles use a lot of fossil fuels and pollute the environment. In fact, Americans buy more bottled water than any other nation in the world, adding 29 billion water bottles a year to the problem. In order to make all these bottles, manufacturers use 17 million barrels of crude oil. That’s enough oil to keep a million cars going for twelve months.Imagine a water bottle filled a quarter of the way up with oil. That’s about how much oil was needed to produce the bottle. So why don’t more people drink water straight from the kitchen faucet? Some people drink bottled water because they think it is better for them than water out of the tap, but that’s not true. In the United States, local governments make sure water from the faucet is safe. There is also growing concern that chemicals in the bottles themselves may leach into the water.People love the convenience of bottled water. But maybe if they realized the problems it causes, they would try drinking from a glass at home or carrying water in a refillable steel container instead of plastic.Plastic bottle recycling can help—instead of going out with the trash, plastic bottles can be turned into items like carpeting or cozy fleece clothing.Unfortunately, for every six water bottles we use, only one makes it to the recycling bin. The rest are sent to landfills. Or, even worse, they end up as trash onthe land and in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate.Water is good for you, so keep drinking it. But think about how often you use water bottles, and see if you can make a change.Betty McLaughlin, who runs an organization called the Container Recycling Institute, says we should try using fewer bottles: “If you take one to school in your lunch, don’t throw it away—bring it home and refill it from the tap for the next day. Keep track of how many times you refill a bottle before you recycle it.”And yes, you can make a difference. Remember this: Recycling one plastic bottle can save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for six hours.15The Hong Kong government is set to overhaul(革新) its immigration policy with the aim of making it easier for mainland and overseas talents to live and work in the city. This is a welcome step because it will remove what is widely seen as a major hurdle to Hong Kong’s efforts to attract qualified immigrants to help its development. To sustain the growth of the services sector, which accounts for nearly 10 percent of Hong Kong’s GDP, it is necessary to continuously expand the pool of talents in various fields. Efforts to attract mainland and overseas talents to Hong Kong are taking on special urgency not only because of fierce competition from other cities, particularly Singapore, but also the rapidly aging population resulting from years of low or negative birthrates.Hong Kong enjoys certain distinct advantages over many Asian cities in the competition for talents. Beyond its vibrant economy, underlined by a free market environment, Hong Kong has a combination of some of the most distinctive elements of Chinese and Western cultures. Hong Kong is as exciting as many other Asian boomtowns, and yet it is no less efficient than a typical European city with a muchsmaller population. Housing costs are high, but no higher than those in other financial centers. For international banks and multinational corporations, housing costs are a concern only when the opportunity to make money begins to dry up. And this situation is not happening in Hong Kong as the local economy, riding the boom on the mainland, is rapidly expanding. It is within this context that the government takes the lead to revise its immigration policy, which calls for, among other things, the establishment of a one-stop service center to process all applications under various migrant schemes. This means that an applicant will in future need to submit only one form for processing. Other changes to the policy include the removing of the age restrictions and lowering of experience requirements. Under the present scoring system used to vet applicants, those who are older than 50 and those with less than five years of work experience win no points in their respective categories. The details of the proposed changes have not been announced. But according to a government official16Much of our good health depends on the cooperation between substances. When they work together, chemical reactions take place smoothly. Body systems are kept in balance. Some of the most important helpers in the job of good health are the substances we call vitamins.Vitamin A is needed to produce a light-sensitive substance in the eyes. People who do not get enough vitamin A cannot see well in the dark. The best source of vitamin A is fish liver oil. It is also found in the yellow part of eggs. In addition, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into vitamin A.Vitamin B-1 is also called thiamine. It changes starchy (含淀粉的) foods into energy. It also helps the heart and nervous system work smoothly. Without it, we would be weak and would not grow. Thiamine is found not just in whole grains like brown rice, but also in other foods. These include beans and peas, nuts and meat and fish.Vitamin B-12 is needed so folic acid can do its work. Together, they help produce red blood cells. Without them, a person suffers from anemia (贫血症). Vitamin B-12 is found naturally in foods such as eggs, meat, fish and milk products.Vitamin C is necessary for strong bones and teeth, and for healthy blood vessels. It also helps wounds heal quickly. The body stores very little vitamin C. So we must get it every day in foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes and uncooked cabbage.17Rising Grain Prices Panic Developing WorldGovernments around the world have taken effective measures in recent weeks to control their countries’ supplies of rice. The price of grains—corn, wheat, and rice—has been rising since 2005 under pressure from farmers who would rather plant crops for biofuels than for food. The sharpest increase has been this year, with the price of Thai rice nearly doubling since January, to $60 per metric ton. Some analysts expect that price to reach $1,000 in the next three months.Tang Min, a former chief economist for the Asian Development Bank, said the price increase is the inevitable consequence of supply and demand. “The world population is increasing, but the increase of the planting of rice has not been as fast,” he sai d. “Without the oil price increasing substantially, the corn price will not increase. Without corn prices increasing quickly, the rice price will not rise.”Despite efforts by governments to increase wages and introduce food subsidies (津贴), price increases and shortages have led to violent clashes along supply lines, in food distribution centers and at supermarkets. To encourage farmers to go back to planting food, China, Indonesia and other countries are increasing their minimum compensation to farmers who grow grains. In China, the government is concerned that the price increase is already leading to upsetting incidents. In August 2007, a supermarket in the inland city of Chengdu decreased the price of eggs from more than 4 yuan to 3.2 yuan—about 46 cents—to cater to shoppers. Thousands of people showed up at the front door, and four were injured during what the domestic media called “scare buying”.In October, a Shanghai-based chain supermarket put five-liter bottles of cooking oil up for sale at the discount price of 30.8 yuan—$4.39, about $2.85 lower than the usual price. Five minutes after the store opened, 19 people were hurt in the rush to buy.The jump in food prices has had a big effect on developing countries because food accounts for a much larger percentage of overall consumption. In China, it is almost 30 percent, while in Vietnam it is 40 percent and in India 50 percent. To calm increasingly concerned Chinese consumers the government has frozen the prices of some grains, meat and eggs. It also has run picture after picture in local newspapers of its “strategic reserves” of frozen meat, sacks of grain and barrels of18Have you ever wondered why there are so many skin colors in the world? Do you know why people living in particular areas usually have a certain color? Biology and history are the two reasons for this.Skin contains something called melanin, which determines a person’s skin color. The more melanin a person has, the darker his or her skin will be. The amount of and production of melanin are controlled by genetics, but can be affected by other things, such as sunlight. If a person lives in a place with strong sunlight, his or her skin will protect itself by producing more melanin, making the skin darker. In a place with less sunlight, a person’s body will produce less melanin, making the skin lighter.Skin color is also affected by another source—vitamin D. Humans all need vitamin D to build bones. People can get it by eating foods such as fish and milk, or from sunlight, which causes vitamin production in the skin. Melanin protects skin by absorbing sunlight, so sunlight absorbed by melanin cannot be used for vitamin D production. Therefore, a dark-skinned person will produce less vitamin D than a light-skinned person when they received the same amount of sunlight. The connection between vitamin D production and skin color is clear when we look at evolution. The earliest humans lived in Africa, their dark skin covered with hair. When they moved to places that had less sunlight, their bodies produced less vitamin D because of their dark skin. As a result, their skin made less melanin, so they could get enough sunlight to produce vitamin D. their skin gradually got lighter and they lost hair. Now, people who live in areas with strong sunlight, like Africa, have darker skin, while people living in other areas have lighter skin. The exception to this is the Inuit, who live in a place with little sunlight, but have dark skin because they eat a lot of fish and have enough vitamin D.Evolution has given us a rainbow of skin colors. Humans have always had melanin to determine our skin color. What has changed through history is the environment where we have lived. This has in turn changed our melanin production, and eventually, skin color.A World of Skin Color19The latest scientific studies show that the sun and the oceans have far more important influences on the world's climate than human activity. The head of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC), Professor Fred Singer, put forward a suggestion to the UN-sponsored(资助) IPCC. He said, “We donated our time and best efforts to produce this report out of concern that the IPCC gave us an incorrect reason for global-warming based on incomplete and faulty science.”“Global-warming news has led to the demand for unrealistic efficiency standards for cars, the construction of uneconomic wind and solar energy stations, the establishment of large production facilities for uneconomic fuels such as ethanol(乙醇) from corn, requirements that electric companies buy expensive power from so-called‘renewable’energy sources, and plans to reduce, at considerable expense, carbon dioxide from power plants.“While it is absolutely nothing wrong to increase energy efficiency, they cannot be regarded as a realistic means to control climate. In addition, policies have been developed that try to hide the huge cost of greenhouse gas controls.“Seeing science clearly misused to shape public policies that have the potential to cause serious economic harm, particularly on low-income groups, we choose to speak up for science at a time when too few people outside the scientific community know what is happening, and too few scientists who know the truth have to speak out against the IPCC.”NIPCC is what its name suggests: an international organization of non- governmental scientists and scholars who have come together to understand the causes and consequences of climate change.“Because we don't believe climate change is caused by human greenhouse gas, we are able to look at evidence the IPCC ignores. Because we do not work for any governments, we can make our research more scientific and fairer.”20Fairview Elementary School, Modesto, California, with some 1,000 students from kindergarten through sixth grade (about 10 percent of them Latino), has long suffered from discipline problems, poor test scores, and a near total lack of parental involvement. The difficulties aren't surprising given that many of the parents --- immigrants who work on farms or in factories --- speak little or no English.Since 2002, Fairview Elementary School has been a First Amendment School, one of 97 developed across the country by the First Amendment Center. The idea behindthe five-year-old program: To keep American strong, children must be trained to respect many points of view, weigh complex issues, and understand the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution(). As students learn good citizenship, the theory goes .They will develop the skills and attitude to do well academically.Fairview students enjoy "freedoms" other kids might envy (they voted not to wear school uniforms, for example). But the children don’t just exercise rights. They also accept such responsibilities as speaking up during class discussions, and keeping the school clean and safe (Fairview is considered the cleanest of 33 schools in its district). In one departure from tradion, there is no hand-raising in class. "Instead," says teacher Deborah Supnet, "we teach them to listen until the other child stops talking." It is called an exercise in respect.Last year, the number of students evaluated advanced in math doubled, from 15% to 30%. And Fairview graduates in their first middle-school mid-term exam averaged B grades ; 96 percent passed all subjects. Particularly encouraging to Principal Rob Williams , the school now has an a ctive parents’ group, Parents with a Voice. One of those parents, Laura Malagon, praises the program for convincing. her to play a more active role in her children’s school life.参考答案11 1. century 2. succeed /achieve 3.Reasons/ Explanations4. graduation /college 5 judgment 6. immediately/quickly7.influenced /affected 8. use 9. help / aid /assistance10. rooted / anchored/involved12 1. APowerful, blonde and over six feet tall, Maria Sharapova is the most brilliant tennis player who has ever stepped on tennis court. In the summer of 2004, seventeen-year-old Sharapova shocked the tennis world by defeating defending champion Serena Williams in the singles finals at Wimbledon, becoming the first Russian player to win the prestigious tennis event, and the third youngest winner in the history of the tournament.Born on April 19, 1987, in Nyagan, a town in western Siberia, Russia, Maria Sharapova was encouraged by her parents to try everything, from dancing andmusic to athletics. She discovered tennis after her fourth birthday. Her parents liked to play tennis, too, so they began teaching her how to hit the ball. She proved to be a quick learner, and when she was six years old they traveled to Moscow for a youth tennis clinic.Sharapova and her father moved from Russia to Florida when she was nine so that she could study at the tennis academy of Nick Bollettieri. She won her first junior championship title at the age of thirteen, and turned professional in 2001. Then Sharapova steadily worked her way up through the professional ranks, claiming her first WTA victory in Japan in 2003. Her crowning moment came the next year, when she won Winbledon, at a young age of 17, solidifying a consistent spot in the top five. She gained her second and third major titles by beating Justine Henin at the 2006 US Open and Ana Ivanovic at the 2008 Australian Open. Sharapova has earned a spot on Forbes magazine’s "Celebrity 100"list as the highest paid female athlete in the world.Sharapova hopes to win Wimbledon, the Australian, French, and US Opens in the same year. No other female player has done so since German champion Steffi Graf in 1988. Sharapova also looks forward to a career beyond tennis. She has done some modeling, is a devoted reader of fashion magazines, and has even helped design some of her court outfits with Nike. Fashion design might be a career option when she retires from tennis. Acting would be an-other choice. "Nothing scares me,"she said, "because I’m not worried about failure. You never know until you try. So if you don’t try, you’ve failed. All I know is, I’m starving to b e the best."1. Which of the following is not TRUE?A. The best title of the story is _____.A. An Outstanding Tennis StarB. History of The Wimbledon TournamentC. Success from YouthD. Championships Sharapova Has GotBEnergy-saving Finns invented the first ice skate more than 5,000 years ago, as a practical method of transport to make getting across frozen lakes less of a struggle. The earliest skates would have been blades made from bones and are one of the oldest means of transport ever discovered —they may even have been essential survival tools.Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University have calculated that ice skates would havesaved energy by 10 percent, and suggest that they were developed for practical use and were not used for recreation, as they are today. They think the most likely birthplace of skating is southern Finland, where there are many icy lakes. The scientists have put their theory to the test and made replica skates modeled after examples held at the British Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.Volunteers on ice rinks in the Alps had their heart rates, oxygen intake and skating speeds measured while they skated with the replica skates. From this experiment, re-searchers were able to calculate energy consumption and the efficiency of their skating. They discovered that skating over the land in ancient Fin-land would have saved 10 percent of people’s energy. The result is based on the fact that Finland has the highest concentration6 of lakes in the world. The ancient Finnish people could benefit more than others from developing this tool for transport. In a time and environment in which the balance between energy taken from food and energy required to live was crucial; the least cost of energy might have helped humans survive in extreme conditions.6. The first ice skate invented by the Finns was used for _____.A. recreationB. transportation across lakesC. saving energyD. sports7. The birthplace of skating might be southern Finland because _____.A. there are many icy lakes thereB. people need more oxygen to breathe in thereC. people feel tired easily thereD. transportation there is more difficult8. Scientists have experimented with replica skates and found that with those skates the ancientFinnish people would have _____.A. crossed a lot of lakesB. saved 10 percent of energy when crossing the lakesC. climbed the Alps easilyD. otherwise wasted a lot of food and energy9. It can be inferred from the story that _____.A. the Finnish people were clever enough to invent the practical skatesB. there were a lot of lakes in ancient FinlandC. the living conditions were very hard for the ancient Finnish peopleD. it was very cold in ancient times in Finland10. What is the meaning of the underlined word in the fifth paragraph mean?A. a copy of somethingB. an example of somethingC. an artificial productD. something that is fakeCC CWant a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient —no matter where he or she may be. Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms(症状) are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis(远程诊断) will be based on real physiological data(生理数据) from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient’s important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past. Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural(countryside) care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need—especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts’ opinions. But there is one problem. Bandwidth(宽带) is the limiting factor for sending complex(复杂的) medical pictures around the world — CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second-generation Internet and third-generation mobile phones for the future of remote medicalservice.Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts’ opinions and diagnosis are common.11. The writer chiefly talks about _______.A. the use of telemedicineB. the on-lined doctorsC. medical care and treatmentD. communication improvement12. The basis of remote diagnosis will be _______.A. personal data assistanceB. some words of a patientC. real physiological informationD. medical pictures from the Internet13. Which of the following statements is true according to the text?A. Patients don’t need doctors in hospitals any more.B. It is impossible to send a patient’s signs over the telephone.C. Many teams use telemedicine dealing with disasters now.D. Broadband communications will become cheaper in the future.14. The “problem” in the fourth paragraph refers to the fact that _______.A. bandwidth isn’t big enough to send complex medical picturesB. the second-generation of Internet has not become popular yetC. communication satellites can only deal with short-term needsD. there is not enough equipment for spreading the medical careDVisiting U.S. President George W. Bush said in Beijing Friday that both China and the United States should encourage bilateral(双边的) contacts and exchanges to promote mutual(相互) understanding.“It’s important for our political leaders to come to China,” said Bush, who gave a speech Friday morning at Qinghua University, one of the most prestigious universities in China. His workin g visit to China and discussions with Oinghua students “help promote” Sino-U.S.(中美) relations, Bush said in response to a student’s question about what he would do to promote Sino-U.S. relations.“Many people in my country are very interested in China,” h e said, adding that these Americans have learned more about China’s culture and the Chinese people. He said that he would keep encouraging such contacts and exchanges between the two countries.Bush said that he would describe back home what he has seen here and that China as a greatnation not only has a “great history” but also an “unbelievably exciting future.”The president said that the 2008 Olympic Games would make a significant opportunity for the rest of the world to understand China, which enables more people to come to China and feel the modernization taking place, and many more people will see it on the television.Bush arrived in Beijing Thursday for a two-day working visit to China.15. What the word “prestigious” in the second paragraph pr obably means?A. greatB. famousC. honorableD. modest16. Which of the sentence is NOT true?A. Bush think bilateral contacts and mutual understanding will promote Sino-U.S. relations.B. Many Americans are interested in China.C. Bush and the students of Qinghua discussed something about how to make China richer and stronger.D. The 2008’s Olympic Games is a great change for China been known by the world.17. Many Americans are interested in China because _______.A. they want to come here to take part in the 2008 Olympic GamesB. they have learned something of China and they want to learn moreC. China has been taking place great changeD. China has a “great history” and “unbelievably exciting future”18. 2009年高考英语阅读理解和任务型阅读课堂综合练习六一阅读理解阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

ATechnology is the application(应用) of knowledge to production. Thanks to modern technology, we have been able to increase greatly the efficiency of our work force. New machines and new methods have helped cut down time and expense while increasing overall output. This has meant more production and a higher standard of living. For most of us in America, modern technology is thought of as the reason why we can have cars and television sets. However, technology has also increased the amount of food available to us, by means of modern farming machinery and animal breeding techniques, and has extended our life span via(通过) medical technology. Will mankind continue to live longer and have a higher quality of life? In large measure the answer depends on technology and our ability to use it widely. If we keep making progress as we have over the past fifty years, the answer is definitely yes. The advancement of technology depends upon research and development, and the latest statistics(统计) show that the United States is continuing to pump billions of dollars annually(每年) into such efforts. So while we are running out of some scarce resources(少的资源) we may well find technological substitutes(代用品)for many of them through our research programs. Therefore, in the final analysis the three major factors of production(land, labor and capital) are all influenced by technology. When we need new skills, on techniques in medicine, people will start developing new technology to meet those needs. As equipment proves to be slow or inefficient, new machines will be invented. Technology responds to our needs in helping us maintain our standard of living.1. What is the best title for the passage?A. The definition of technologyB. Modern technologyC. The application of technologyD. The development of technology2. Which is the main idea of the passage?A. Modern technology is the key to the improvement of standard of living.B. The three major factors of production (land, labor and capital) are all influenced by technology.C. Technology is the response to our needs.D. The United States is making great efforts to advance its technology.3. According to the passage, people can live a long life with the help of _______.A. higher quality of lifeB. medical technologyC. modern farming machineryD. technological substituteBSpace travel is definitely bad for astronauts‟ bones, reduc ing their bone density(密度) after only a month of weightlessness, according to French research published on Friday.Laurence Vico and his fellow workers at St Etienne University called for more research into the effects of microgravity, after their study of 15 astronauts from the Russian MIR station showed bone loss continued throughout space flights.“Bone loss was especially striking in four astronauts, ” the scientists reported in the Lancet Medical Journal. They measured the bone mineral density (BMD) of bones in the forearm(前臂) and lower leg of the astronauts who had spent one to six months in space. The BMD loss was significant in the tibia(胫骨) of the lower leg, a weight-bearing bone, but barely changed in the radius(桡骨) of the forearm. “Our results indicate the need to inve stigate not only different bones, but also different areas of the same bone since not all sites of the skeleton (骨架) are similarly affected by space conditions, ” they added.Without gravity the body isn‟t bearing any weight so there is no need for calcium (钙) which makes bones strong, and it becomes empty into the bloodstream. The research team suggested in future scientists should try to determine if the loss of bone density was only on weight-bearing bones on longer flights, also the possible recovery after returning to Earth.4. French scientists did their research on Russian astronauts, because _______.A. they only cared for the Russian astronautsB. they were not interested in their own astronautsC. the Russian government invited them to do their researchD. the Russian astronauts worked in space for a long time5. Scientists have found that _______.A. the BMD loss may cause serious illness to astronautsB. the BMD loss may cause some change in astronauts‟ bodiesC. astronauts shouldn‟t care about th e BMD lossD. astronauts should take some calcium before space travel6. What cause the BMD loss to astronauts, according to this passage?A. The food they eat in space.B. The drinks they take in space.C. The temperature in space.D. The gravity in space.7. In the third paragraph, the word “striking” means ______.A. unusualB. simpleC. weakD. slowCSome spiders hunt on the ground, others build webs to trap their food, but the grass water spider catches its prey by running along the surface of the water. This special water spider lives on the grassy banks of streams where mosquitoes, damsel flies and other insects come to feed and breed.Although it is one of the largest spiders in New Zealand, it has an unusual ability. It doesn‟t disturb the water as it waits for its meal, and there is barely a ripple(波纹) when it skims(掠过) across the surface at lightning speed to catch its prey.Grass water spiders deal swiftly with larger insects like damsel flies by pulling their heads under the water and holding them there until they drown. After a meal, the grass water spider spends up to half an hour grooming(修饰) itself. It wipes its eight eyes, brushes its antennae(触角), and takes special care to clean the hairs on its body.It is the hairs that trap tiny bubbles(泡沫) of air so that the spider can run down a blade(叶片) of grass and stay underwater for up to an hour when it is frightened. The hairs also keep the spider dry, even underwater. It is only when the female spider is caring for the young that she does not hunt on the water. After mating, she produces a large egg sac(囊), which she carries around for five weeks. Once the eggs start to hatch, she attaches the sac to some blades of grass or a thistle. She then tears the sac open and releases the tiny spiders into the nursery web.8. How does the grass water spider kill its prey?A. in a webB. by drowningC. by poisoningD. with its antennae9. the writer describes the special spider as “special” because _______.A. it walks on waterB. it has eight eyesC. of its hairy appearanceD. of the way it produces its young10. The passage tells us that the spider ______.A. feeds grass and thistles to its young.B. lives on blades of grass under the waterC. lives in the grass on the banks of streamsD. eats a meal once every five weeks11. The purpose of the passage is to _______.A. convince readers that spiders are dangerousB. indicate that the grass water spider is endangeredC. list all of the spiders that can be found in New ZealandD. describe the characteristics of the grass water spiderDThe mo st frightening words in the English language are, “Our computer is down.” You hear it more and more when you are on business. Then I asked her, “What do all you people do?”“We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not.”“So when it goes down, you go down with it.”“That‟s good, sir.”“How long will the computer be down?” I wanted to know.“I have no idea. Sometimes it‟s down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There‟s no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it‟s down it won‟t answer us.”After the girl told me they had no backup(备用) computer, I said. “Let‟s forget the computer. What about your planes? They‟re still flying, aren‟t they?”“I couldn‟t tell without asking the computer.”“Maybe I could just go to the gate and ask the pilot if he‟s flying to Washington, ” I suggested.“I wouldn‟t know what gate to send you to. Even if the pilot was going to Washington, he couldn‟t take you if you didn‟t have a ticket.”“Is there any other airline flying to Washington within the next few hours?”“I wouldn‟t know, ” she said, pointing at the dark screen. “Only …IT‟ knows. …It‟ can‟t tell me.”By this time there were quite a few people standing in lines. The word soon spread to other travelers that the computer was down. Some people went white, some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage.12. Whenever I speak to some Chinese students, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spo ken English does not have to remain “poor.” I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using them to get your message across. But to talk to someone in English, as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn‟t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand and forgive you for any mistakes he hears. The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive(预先主动的) language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then, you will see English opportunities wherever you go.If you do not use your English beyond the classroom you will forget the English you know. Remember : USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.Title: Some reasons for their problems with spoken English1. B。

AThe common cold is the world's most widespread illness, which is plagues(疫病)that flesh receives. The most widespread fallacy(谬误)of all is that colds caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds,it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes. During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches(战壕),cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds. In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp(奥斯维辛集中营),naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in Experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose. If,then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter?Despite the most pains-taking research,no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on. No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors(止痛片)such as aspirin, but all they do is relieve the symptoms。

I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.

But jungles contain wonders as well as dangers and with good guides, some education, and a few precautions(预防措施), the wilds of the Internet can be safely navigated(航行). “Kids have to be on-line. If we tell our kids they can‟t have ac cess(机会) to the Internet, we‟re cutting them off from their future,” said an expert. Most kids have started to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. There are search engines designed just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have beenselected as safe. The most popular way to limit access would be to use what is known as a “content screener(过滤器)”. But this can‟t be wholly reliable(可靠), and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing(浏览) the Internet.A few other tips●Don‟t put the PC in a child‟s room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.●Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make on-line.●Tell your chil d not to give on-line strangers personal information, especially like address and phone number.●And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on-line over the phone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along.9. Which of the following is right according to the passage?A. Surfing the Internet is the best method of educating children.B. Children‟s not having access to Internet may have effect on their progress.C. Using a content screener is most reliable for keeping children having access to Internet.D. He was not my grandfather, but an Italian who came down the road one day, selling fruit in Florida.Jack stopped at my grandmother‟s house to sell her some oranges just a stone‟s throw from downtown Miami, and he was delivering her whiskey a week later. AWhen Johnson called again, the manager received him very politely. “That is a most remarkable oil you brought us, Mr. Johnson,” he said. Johnson nodded his smooth, dark head. That was something he knew very well. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” the manager admitted. Johnson nodded again. “No?” he said politely. Then he added, “But I think you will, sir. A very great deal of it.” He appeared to think for a moment. “I think you wi ll find it will be on sale seven, perhaps, eight years from now.” He smiled. The manager thought that was uncertain. He said, “It is better than our fish oils. I admit that.” “So I am told, sir,” agreed Johnson.“Have you any plans to produce it yourself, Mr. Johnson?”Johnson smiled again. “Would I be showing it to you if I had?”“We might add some chemicals to one of our own fish oils,” said the manager.“It would be expensive to do that, even if you could.” Johnson said gently. “Besides,” he added, “I am told that this oil will be much cheaper than your best fish oils. Cheaper than any vegetable oil, in fact.”“Perhaps,” said the manager. “Well, I suppose you want to make an arrangement, Mr Johnson, Shall we discuss it?”“Of course,” said Johnson. “Th ere are two ways of dealing with a situation of this sort. The usual one is to prevent it altogether or at least to delay it as long as possible. That is, of course, the best way,” The manager nodded. He knew plenty about all that.“But I am so sorry for you, because, you see, that is not possible this time.” The manager had his doubts, but all he said was an inquiring(asking), “Oh?”“The other way,” continued Johnson, “is to produce yourself before the trouble starts.”1. The manager thought of adding chemicals to the fish oil to make it ________.A. cheaper than the new oilB. more quicklyC. more expensiveD. as good as the new oil2. Johnson’s new oil would be ________.A. more expensive than fish oil, but betterB. less expensive, and betterC. less expensive, but not goodD. more expensive, and not so good3. Johnson expressed his regret that the manager ________.A. could not stop the new oil being madeB. would never know how to make itC. had spent a lot of money on itD. didn’t know enough about it4. Johnson showed his new oil to the manager because he wanted ________.A. to produce it himselfB. to prevent it being producedC. to be paid not to produce itD. the manager to produce itBA lot of us lose life’s tough battles by sta rting a frontal(正面的) attack—when a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum(最后通牒) about being late on the job. Although there was a good reason for Sam’s a being late—serious illness at home—he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn’t work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.Yes, the boss was, Sam entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room(更衣室); everyone was hard at work. Sam’s supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand. “How do you do!” he said. “I’m Sam Maynard. I’m applying for a job. Which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Does th e early bird get the worm?”The room exploded in laughter. The supervisor clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Sam Maynard had saved his job—with the only tool that could win, a laugh.Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected(忽略), means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”, criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it’s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog maystart a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians(喜剧演员) on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance(忍受力) than people in any other forum.5. Why was Sam late for his job?A. Because he was ill.B. Because he got up late.C. Because he was caught in a traffic jam.D. He was busy applying for a new job.6. The main idea of this passage is ________.A. Sam Maynard saved his job with humorB. humor is important in our livesC. early bird gets the wormD. humor can solve racial discriminations7. The phrase “clamped off” in Paragraph 3 means ________.A. tried to hold backB. tried to setC. chargedD. gave out8. Which of the following statements can we infer from the passage?A. Many lose life’s battles for they are lacking in a sense of humor.B. It wasn’t the first time that Sam came late for his work.C. Sam was supposed to come to his office at 8:30.D. Humor is the most effective way of solving problems.CIn 1939 two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue(烤肉) restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new idea: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity(一致性), for the brothers had developed a strict routine(程序) for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks’ stickin g to their routine. Their new drive-in became surprisingly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothershad allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the special attraction of the brothers’ fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise(特许经营) other copies of their restaurants. The agreement included the right to duplicate(复制) the menu, the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches(拱门).Today McDonald’s is really a household name. In 1976, McDonald’s had over $ l billion in total sales. Its first twenty-two years is one of the most surprising success stories in modern American business history.9. This passage mainly talks about _______.A. the development of fast food servicesB. how McDonald’s became a billion-dollar businessC. the business careers of Mac and Dick McDonaldD. Ray Kroc’s business talent10. Mac and Dick managed all of the following businesses except _______.A. a drive-inB. a theaterC. a cinemaD. a barbecue restaurant11. We may infer from this passage that _______.A. Mac and Dick McDonald never became wealthy for they sold their idea to Kroc.B. the place the McDonalds chose was the only source of the great popularity of their drive-inC. forty years ago there were lots of fast-food restaurantsD. Ray Kroc was a good businessman12. The passage suggests that _______.A. creativity is an important element of business successB. Ray Kroc was the close partner of the McDonald brothersC. Mac and Dick McDonald became broken after they sold their ideas to Ray KrocD. California is the best place to go into businessDA characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect theself-made man — the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort. This attitude toward manual(体力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪华地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.13. From paragraph 1, we can know that in America _________.A. people tend to have a high opinion of the self-made manB. people can always rise to the top through their won effortsC. college professors win great respect from common workersC. people feel painful to mention their fathers as labors.14. According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because _________.A. servants in American are hard to getB. she takes pride in what she can do herselfC. she can hardly afford servantsD. It is easy to prepare a meal with canned food15. The expression “ wait on table” in the second paragraph means “_________”.A. work in a furniture shopB. keep accounts for a barC. wait to lay the tableD. serve customers in a restaurant16. Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?A. A Respectable Self-made FamilyB. American Attitude toward Manual LaborC. Characteristics of American CultureD. Besides, job opportunities are even better for people with experience. She discovers that medical assistants not only have to do some office work, but have medical responsibilities as well. Nadia decides this job will be interesting and will also provide excellent experience for her nursing career. The Occupation Handbook is just an example of websites that can help you plan a new career.
It pictures the life of Shanghai workers. Unlike his brother, who is a handsome man, John is quite homely. A calendar is a timetable of the days, weeks, months of a certain year. She felt miserable, for her parents both died weeks ago.

• 1.Which of the following statements is true/ false?
Task-based Reading Comprehension
1.The word _____could best be replaced by_____. 2.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word_____. 3.By______the writer means_____. 4.In the ______ paragraph, the word "_____" means (refers to )_____. 5.The underlined word _____ is closest in meaning to _____.
A. He loves to listen to drums. He says he’s not a player, just a listener. He claims to like rock. B. He is violinist, so of course it’s natural that he should favor the violin. He prefers country music. C. His favorite is the guitar. However, he hasn’t played for years, so he keeps hoping to start again. His favorite style of music is classical music.
