Close1I remember viewing half a dozen men in a chair factory whose job was to bend several pieces of steel and attach them so that a folding chair would result. The men knew they were good. When I talked with them, each expressed enormous pride in being a part of the fastest, best team. And this sense of belonging to an accomplished work group is one of the distinctivesatisfactions of the world of work.Unlike many other aspects of life, relationships among people at work tend to be simpler, less complicated, somewhat less emotional. This is not to say there aren’t arguments and jealousies, but, on the whole, behavioral research discloses that human relations at work are just easer, perhaps because they are more regular and predictable and thus simpler to adjust to than the sporadic, the more intense and less regular relationships in the community, and the work group also gently pressures its members to learn how to adjust to one another so that the ―rough edges‖ are worked off because people know they must do certain things with and through one another each day.Beyond the team and the work group, there is the organization, whether it b company or hospital or university. The same pride in being part of a well-coordinated, successful unit is derived from being part of a larger collectivity. Working for a company that is thought of as being part of the best in the community can provide employees with both status and self-confidence. They assume, usually with good reasons, that others regard them more highly, even envy them, and that are more competent than the average because of this association witha ―winner‖, a prestigious institu tion.2 AROUND 1970, psychologist Walter Mischel launched aclassic experiment. He left a succession of 4-year-olds in a room with a bell and a marshmallow. If they rang the bell, he would come back and they could eat the marshmallow. If, however, they didn't ring the bell and waited for him to come back on his own, they could then have two marshmallows. In videos of the experiment, you can see the children squirming, kicking, hiding their eyes -- desperately trying to exercise self-control so they can wait and get two marshmallows. Their performance varied widely. Some broke down and rang the bell within a minute. Others lasted 15 minutes. The children who waited longer went on to get higher SAT scores. They got into better colleges and had, on average, better adult outcomes. The children who rang the bell quickest were more likely to become bullies. They received worse teacher and parental evaluations 10 years later and were more likely to have drug problems at age 32.Mischel experiments, along with everyday experience, tell us that self-control is essential. Young people who can delay gratification can sit through sometimes boring classes to get a degree. They can perform rote tasks in order to, say, master a language. They can avoid drugs and alcohol. For people without self-control skills, however, school is a series of failed ordeals. No wonder they drop out. Life is a parade of foolish decisions: teenage pregnancy, drug use, gambling, truancy and crime.4 Happiness is basically a state of mind. Happiness depends more on one's disposition and outlook. Only by connecting to your real identity, deeper than merely the body and mind, can one reach real happiness because that is where such happiness is always found. In this way, very little is needed to have a happy life. It is all within yourself. Thus, we can attain a state of being satisfied with what we have without being anxious to attain allour temporal desires, without worrying about the future, and without concerning ourselves with unnecessary hopes and fears. When you are really and naturally happy from within, everything else that you accomplish can be viewed as icing on the cake, an extra sweetness to life. But such external activities are not where true happiness liesThe only reason why people cannot attain their inward spiritual bliss right here and now is because they put too much focus on their external situation and what they feel they need and how to get it. Or they focus on the problems that they think they have. Actually, what people need to be happy is right inside them, at all times, regardless of whatever trials and challenges may happen outside and around them. As I've always said, it is not what happens to you, but it is how you perceive it and how you react or respond to it that makes the difference. We have to understand that happiness and distress is a constant flow in material life. We are affected by it only if we identify with it. One has to learn to rise above that by connecting with your true self, or higher Self. So how do we do that?5 We might try to pick out a few of the outstanding achievements in science during recent years before we try to consider what some of the achievements of the future may be.Atomic 1 )_ application_ with its radioactivity and isotopes (同位素)has given us an extraordinary and unexpected new 2 )_ tool_ for use in the sciences. Minimalist living, in simplest terms, is to live with as less as possible, mentally and physically until you achieve peace of mind. Results that ensue are less stress, more time, and increased happiness. Minimalists like to say that they're living more meaningfully, more deliberately, and that the minimalist lifestyle allows them to focus on what's more important in life: friends, hobbies, travel, experiences. Of course, minimalism doesn't mean there's anything inherently wrong with owning material possessions. Today's problem seems to be that we tend to give too much meaning to our things, often forsaking (抛弃) our health, our relationships, our passions, our personal growth, and our desire to contribute beyond ourselves. In addition to its application in people's daily life, minimalism also finds application in many creative disciplines, including art, architecture, design, dance, film making, theater, music, fashion, photography and literature.极简主义是指去掉多余的,仅保留需要的部分。

to make ends meet. According to the author, what is the cause of this phenomenon?
Unit 6: Reading comprehension
Reference “The contest” refers to the consumption competition — the competition for one-upmanship in the search for status symbols that separate one from the crowd. It is “futile” because there is no chance of winning it since material pursuit is endless. The cause of this paradoxical phenomenon is that ―they’re running in the pack with everyone else‖, that is, people are not simply struggling to own more material wealth, instead, they are struggling to surpass others — to own more material wealth and thus achieve higher social status than others. They not only have to possess widely owned consumer products in order not to be considered a crank or a pauper, but also have to buy expensive products beyond their financial capacity so that they can be more successful than other people with whom they compare themselves. As there are always more fashionable and more expensive luxuries coming out, their material desires seem infinite. Consequently, their rising incomes often cannot satisfy their rising wants.

The author cites four examples: Al Gore’s ambition is to be elected American president; America’s computer moguls’ ambition is to control the nation’s cyberagenda; American football players’ ambition is to score a touchdown; Most people’s ambition is to search for status symbols that separate them from the crowd. The last one is most commonly shared by people. Money is not the only way but surely the most common way to realize this ambition, as it can easily change into some other symbol of identity and status, such as a bigger house, a more exotic vacation, a niftier bike, a faster computer.

3.
In paragraph 3, the author says ―One-upmanship is a national mania.‖ Do you know the meaning of the word ―one-upmanship‖? And can you find some other expressions in the article which have similar meaning? What’s the relationship between oneupmanship and all the above-mentioned examples of ambition? In the author’s mind, ambition is not only ―a quest for riches‖, then what is it?
Reference
The word ―one-upmanship‖ means gaining an advantage and a feeling of superiority over other people. Expressions such as ―outdo‖, ―excel‖ have similar meaning. The desire for oneupmanship can summarize all the above-mentioned examples of ambition. In the author’s mind, ambition is a quest for oneupmanship — to be better or more successful than other people.
Because ambition is ―an unrelenting oppressor, which robs us of time and peace of mind‖, meaning that ambition can mercilessly cause people much distress and suffering, driving them to work overtime with little time left for leisure and relaxation and filling their minds with dissatisfaction, worry and anxiety. This is especially true in economically booming periods such as the present when there are more opportunities alluring people. As a result, presently many people are doubtful about ambition, believing that ambition has become too hard to control and is forcing us to make too great efforts and hold too strong desires which will finally destroy ourselves.

1.
At the very beginning of the article, the author points out: ―ambition is a quality that is hard to praise and easy to deplore‖. Why does he say so? And how is this related to the fact that presently many people are doubtful about ambition? What belief do these people hold about ambition? Reference
Reference The word ―mania‖ originally refers to a mental illness in which somebody has an obsession about something that makes them extremely anxious, violent or confused(躁狂症). Here it means an extremely strong desire or enthusiasm for something shared by a lot of people at the same time. It evokes a picture of a lot of people behaving in an anxious, violent and confused way in order to surpass each other.
