Their firm, Syscap, now turns over $ 120m a year.'I'm an extrovert, so selling fits my character,' explains Phil Brook. ' I started selling photocopiers, and it didn't take me long to achieve the agreed sales target. Then, in 1994, I realised the IT industry was about to explode, and I decided to try and sell IT. I met a guy who was setting up as a computer re-seller, and I worked for him for three years, expanding his company to a turnover of $3-$4m. We were among only a few people selling computer systems on lease, so we were attractive to reps offering finance. There was this guy from CTL Bank called Sean Williams who rang us dozens of times, trying to sell me IT finance. I was already getting finance from somebody else, but he kept to calling. That impressed me - I thought, if he's any good, maybe I'll recruit him.'Sean Williams adds, ' When we finally met, we went out to lunch and became firm friends. I thought Phil was fun, and we had similar interests. The next day, we did a deal together, and I provided him with all the finance he needed. Then he realised, and I soon agreed, that there was a big opportunity to do independently what I was already doing for the bank. So he left his job and established Syscap. It took me a while to decide to join him, because I was among the top salespeople nationally at my bank, and my future was planned. But I knew when I did that is was商务英语练习题the right decision. I've always had big ambitions, but I didn't expect it to become as big as this.'Phil thinks that the next few years look promising. ' The competition in this trade is weak,' he says, ' so I believe we can turn this into a $1bn company. People in our industry find it amazing that Sean and I still get on so well after all this time. But I'm glad we do . It's our partnership that makes the job fun.'6. What led to a change in attitudes to brands?A the influence of consumers on each otherB the personal circumstances of consumersC more sophisticated marketingD greater choice of products3、阅读下列文章.回答Questions :●Read the following article about the development of the knowledge economy and the questions on the opposite page .●For each question 15 – 20 , mark one letter (A, B, C or D ) on your Answer Sheet for the answer you choose. There have long been markets in tin, cocoa, silver and the like. There used to be security in thinking that somewhere there was a product, something you could touch and see. Now there are new markets in abstractions, trade inideas and knowledge. Everyone has knowledge but there used to be no way t o trade it ------except through jobs. That simple fact of economic life was the basis for white collar employment for centuries. The whole job culture grew up because there was no alternative way to sell knowledge ,other then the worker or manager providing, for a fixed price, his or her knowledge to an employer to own or control. The quantity of knowledge provided has typically been measured in time. But today we stand at the thresh-old of a new era. The information economy has matured and become smarter. According to many business commentators, we are now living in a knowledge economy . There has always been a market for knowledge , of course. The publishing industry is based on it. But today the internet is making the distribution of knowledge ever easier. The days when the publisher decidedwhat got published are over. Anyone with a Pc and a modem can talk to the world. This is reducing the friction in the knowledge economy. Everyone has knowledge of whatever industry she or he is in. say you are a computer dealer, for example. Over the years your have complied a list of the ten best lowest price places to buy wholesale computer equipment. Now you can sell your knowledge to newer, younger computer dealers who have no way to build up this knowledge without losing thousands of pounds finding it out the hard way. Until now, such knowledge remained securely locked in the recipient’s head ,accumulated and then worthlessly withered away. This no longer needs to be the case. Such knowledge can be sold via websites. Knowledge has a distinct advantagein today’s marketplace. It’s a renewable resource. Better yet, its worth actually increases, . “knowledge is the only asset that grows with use. “ observes Scanford U niversity Professor Paul Romer. But what exactly is knowledge and how can it be packaged to trade on an open market” “ knowledge is experiential information, intelligence applied thorough and gained from experience.” Say Josenph Pine and James Gilmore in their book The Experience Economy. The value of knowledge often depends on variables such as time and the credibility of the seller.Certian knowledge may have a very limited shelf life. In sights concerning how to set up an internet business in one country, might be worth a fortune on one day and nothing the next , depending on changes in government policy. Markets in knowledge will be significance for one thing. 4、TASK TW0—BENEFITS·For questions l8—22,match the extracts with the benefits, listed A—H·For eac h extract, choose the benefit stated.·Write one letter(A—H)next to the number of the extract.回答听力第18题:_________。

Once again, I'd forgotten to refrigerate it. "Don't worry," a friend said, "I can chill it for you fight away."Five minutes later she emerged from the kitchen with the wine perfectly cooled. Asked to reveal her secret, she said, "Easy.I poured the wine in a plastic bag and then dipped it in ice water. After a few minutes the wine was cold. The hard part was getting it back into bottle. I couldn't find a funnel (漏斗), so I made a cone with wax paper."My guests applauded. "How wonderful if we could all be that clever," one remarked.A decade of research has convinced me we can. What separates the average person from Edison, Picasso or even Shakespeare isn't creative capacity--it's the ability to use that capacity by encouraging creative impulses and then acting upon them. Most of us seldom achieve our creative potential. I think I know why, and I can help unlock the reservoir of ideas hiding within every one of us.One puzzle I've watched students deal with is retrieving a Ping-Pong ball that has fallen to the bottom of a sealed, vertical drainpipe. The tools that they can use are either too short to reach the ball or too wide to fit into the pipe, which is also too narrow to reach into by hand. At last some students make the connection: drainpipe= water=floating. They pour water down the hole, and the ball floats to the top. This and many other experiments suggest concrete ways of increasing creativity in all of us. Here are the best techniques.Capture the fleeting. A good idea is like a rabbit. It runs by so fast that sometimes you see only its ears or tail. To capture it, you must be ready. Creative people are always ready to act, and that may ha the only difference between us and them.Poet Amy Lowell wrote of the urgency with which she captured new ideas, "Whatever 1 am doing, I lay it aside and attend to the arriving poem," she wrote. Like many other writers, Lowell sought paper and pencil when she saw a good idea coming. I enter new ideas into a pocket computer. Anything--even a napkin--win do.In a letter to a friend in 1821, Ludwig van Beethoven talked about how he thought of a beautiful tune while dozing in carriage. "But scarcely did I awake when away flew the tune," he wrote, "and I could not recall any part of it.' Fortunately--forBeethoven and for us--the next day in the same carriage, the tune came back to him, and this time he captured it in writing. When a good idea comes your way, write it down--on your arm if necessary. Not every idea will have value, of course. The point is to capture first and evaluate them later.Daydream. Surrealist Dali used to lie on a sofa, holding a spoon. Just as he began to fall asleep. Dali would drop the spoon onto a plate on the floor. The sound shocked him awake, and he would immediately sketch the images he had seen in his mind in that fertile world of semi-sleep.Everyone experiences this strange state, and everyone can take advantage of it. Try Dali's trick, or just allow yourself to daydream. For many, the "three b's"--bed, bath and bus--are productive. There, and anywhere else you can be with your thoughts undisturbed, you'll find that ideas emerging freely.Seek challenges. When you're stuck behind a locked door, every behavior that's ever gotten you free turns up quickly: you may push or pull on the knob, bang the door--even shout for help. Scientists call the rehappening of old behaviors in a challenging situation resurgence. The more behaviors that reappear, the greater the number of possible interconnections, and the more likely that new ideas will occur.Try inviting friends and business associations from different areas of your life to a party. Bring people of two or three generations together. This will get you thinking in new ways.Edwin Land, one of America's most prolific inventors, said that the idea that led to his invention of the Polaroid camera came from his three-year-old daughter. On a visit to Santa Fe in 1943, she asked why she couldn't see the picture he had just taken. During the next hour, as Land walked around Santa Fe, allhe had learned about chemistry came together, with amazing results. Said Land, "The camera and the film became clear to me. In my mind they were so real that I spent several hours describing them."。

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their bu siness do not follow other people’s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to workin that way.Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you bee more experienced you willnever ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.1. 商务英语高级强化模拟试题

商务英语高级强化模拟试题

商务英语高级强化模拟试题Although it is nothing new for panies to build relationships with customers, it has generally been done on a one-to-one basis. In recent years, however, technological developments have made it possible to build up individual relationships with clients on a much larger scale, and this more sophisticated kind of operation is known as relationship marketing. Relationship marketing aims to increase sales through deliberate efforts to retain customers and promote two-way munication with them – and new technology has make munication possible with a for larger customer base than before. The information gathered forms the basis of highly technical analyses of customer purchasing and profitability, which can be used to increase sales. The building of good personal relationships with customers is usually integral to the management of small businesses, and owners of small corner shops clearly illustrate the essence of relationship marketing, although the technology available to them is far less advanced than that available to, say, a supermarket chain. Small shopkeepers have direct knowledge of regular customers and bee familiar with their needs, likes and dislikes. The shopkeepers can then provide services tailored toindividual needs. Over time, a bond of loyalty is likely to develop between shopkeepers and regular customers. The benefits of relationship marketing enjoyed by small businesses are now available to big businesses, thanks to a number of developments. First and foremost is the increasing recognition of the importance of profitability of retaining existing customers. Secondly, technologies have been developed which enable the collection, manipulation and analysis of huge banks of customer information. Large retailers can use store cards to obtain detailed background information about customer’s ages, salaries and lifestyles, and point-of-sale technology can be sued to track purchases made by every customer. Electronic storage enables all of this information to be retained, manipulated and integrated, while detailed analyses can be carried out on ever more powerful puters. Companies are thus able to target individuals amongst their thousands of customers with unique promotions or information matched to their back grounds and to their purchasing tendencies. Thirdly, panies feel a need to use relationship marketing because of increased petition: amassing knowledge about customers and building up customer relationships through interactive contact can enable organizations to differentiate their products or services more easily form those of petitors. However, relationship marketing is not always the right route for organizations to take, and is not appropriate for all customers. Some bank customers, for example, cost more to serve than the bank actually makes form their custom, while a supermarket customer who spends very little and does not shop regularly does not justify the expenditure of several pounds per annum on relationship marketing. In addition, customers may not always be interested in a relationship, even where there are demonstrable benefits to be had.Overall, suessful relationship marketing depends upon selecting and targeting the customers you wish to retain, and identifying sales areas where the investment and effort will be worthwhile. Many organizations have found the approach to be very rewarding in terms of customerretention and related profitability, but relationship marketing is still a developing field and is neither cheap nor easy to operate. It involves an integrative approach which draws marketing, quality and customer service together; it also depends upon developing the capacity of every employee – particularly front-line staff – to market the goods or services of the organization in a customer-focused way; and finally, it can require heavy investment in appropriate information technology.15. In the first paragraph, the writer describes relationship marketing asa. an idea that has passed in and out of fashion over the last few years.b. a term used for an activity that used to exist in a more basic form.c. a way for a pany to advertise to its customers.d. a way for a pany to analyze its profitability.16. Why are small shopkeepers used to illustrate relationship marketing?a. Their suess depends on their relationships withtheir customers.b. They keep information about their customers on puter.c. They were the first to use the term relationship marketing.c. Their relationship with customers has started to change recently.17. One reason why large panies didn’t userelationship marketing in the past is thata. they underestimated the true value of customer loyalty.b. heir customers didn’t want them to collect information.c. they didn’t need to find out about individual customers.d. they didn’t think they could justify the expenses.。

The answer is not a great number. And the smaller the company, the fewer checks there are on how well the directors are doing. Some of the largest companies formally assess the performance of their board, but very few new or growing companies have managed to get round to establishing any such procedure. Many business experts believe, however, that it is important for all companies to review the performance of the board.(8).....Another reason is that the board itself needs information on how well it is doing, just as much as other employees do.For the chief executive, appraisal of some sort is absolutely essential for his or her own sake and for the good of the company.Indeed, many of those who have reached this level remark on how lonely the job of chief executive is and how fewopportunities they get to discuss issues relating to it. There is some evidence to show that once smaller companies put a board appraisal process in place, they find this process relatively easy to operate.(9)..... Their counterparts in larger organizations, however, are often afraid that appraisals could be a challenge to their status. So, how should companies assess their board? (10).....At a very basic level, this could simply mean getting all the directors to write down what they have achieved and how they can improve on it.At the other end of the scale is the full "360-degree" appraisal. Here, each director is appraised in a systematic manner by a combination of the chairman and fellow directors. In the largest companies there are many methodsfor assessing the board.A number of such companies haveself-assessment schemes. The chairman may meet each board member individually to ask how things are going, in a fairly informal way.The whole board might also meet to talk aboutits progress in open session.(11).....These might ask for people's opinions on the board's main tasks or on how wellthe committees are working. Research indicates there has been some improvement in the way the appraisal of board members is conducted.(12)......The chairman will have been involved directly or indirectly in the appraisal of all members of the board.Whose job is it, then, to appraise the chairman? A.Itis often the case that the directors of such companies are even happy to receive criticism, as this can prevent them from making basic mistakes. B.The rest of the workforce seesit as unfair if the directors are the only members of thecompany to escape appraisal. C.These are encouraging asthey put a limit on the power of the chairman to assessfellow directors. D.Alternatively, questionnaires might be distributed to directors, forming the basis for future discussion. E.One issue remains, however, when all the others have been dealt with. F.It is generally agreed that it isthe chairman's responsibility to ensure the regular appraisal of each member of the board. G.However, one wonders how many companies have in place a formal appraisal process for their board of directors. It is a truly international commodity, and today more than 50 countries in the world grow coffee beans. (example) ______I_____. ICO organization helps coffee producers and promotes coffee conumption worldwide.ICO estimates that world production next year will reach 97.5 million bags.11.3 million bags higher than the current year.(8) ____________. As the largest producing country, Brazil is particularly important in the coffee world. In 1994 Brazil was responsible for 25% of world production, Colombia was next with 13.4%, Indonesia had 7.5%, Mexico 4.7%, Guatemala3.8% and Ethiopia and Vietnam were equal with 3.4%.Coffee isa tough crop, and can be grown in areas where it is difficult or impossible to grow other crops. (9) However, disease is always problem for coffee production, as we can see in some parts of South America at the moment.ICO is active in educating farmers about avoiding disease and dealing with problems when they occur. The distribution chain varies from country to country, explains Pablo Dubois. In most countries the smaller farmers sell their crop to a local trader, who then sells it on to exporters. There are, however, other distribution systems. (10) ____________. Some countries, like Vietnam, have special government marketing organizations forcoffee.Coffee prices often vary greatly from one year to the next. In 1997, for example, there was a large rise in the world price, which was immediately felt by the consumer. Rising prices always result in a drop in sales, which will have a bad effect on those developing countries, which are highly dependent on foreign exchange from coffee exports. (11)____________.In the opinion of Pablo Dubois, the biggest problem for his organisation is to create greater consumer awareness of the different varieties of coffee and different ways of preparing it. (12)____________. ICO is therefore concentrating its promotional activities on Russia and China. It is also encouraging environmentally friendly coffee production, and last year's seminar on coffee and the environment created a lot of interest. The future looks bright for the coffee industry. It is estimated that consumption over the next few years will continue to rise steadily. New markets like Eastern Europe and China are expected to develop fast.A. As a result, the membership now represents 94% of all exporters and 60% of all importers.B. In some of these countries, this can amount to as much as 50% of all export earning.C. In North America, most consumers already have above average knowledge of the range available.D. For example, frost and wind are particularly damaging to coffee crops.E. Larger coffee growers, for example, frequently export directly.F. The main reason for this is higher Brazilian output as production recovers from weather damage to crops.G. It is cultivated in mountain regions which can only be reached by animal transport, and in other difficult areas where modern agricultural equipment cannot be used.H. This is because there is a demand for coffee in Germany, and it is also sold in the UK and in the US.I. This make the coffee industry fairly universal, accordingto Pablo Dubois, Head of the International CoffeeOrganisation (ICO), based in London.简答题8、Part OneYou are the Manager of a small printing company.
