第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节选择题(共15小题,每小题2分,共30分)AOne hometown owner in Detroit is intending to exchange his villa for the latest iPhone 6. The owner has dropped the asking price from $ 5,000 to a new iPhone 6 as the owner is desperate to sell before the tax auction (拍卖) season where ―thousands‖ of homes near foreclosure (房屋止赎权) will flood into the market, a real estate broker (房地产经纪人) called Larry Else told ABC News.―This house is really not worth much at all,‖ Else said. The windows are broken and ther e is no front door. The broker himself has not been inside the home because his company has a policy of not going in unsecured houses alone. Detroit’s declining fortunes have left its population about a third of what it used to be in its peak, according to the U.S. Census Bureau (人口普查办公室).Now, the property has accrued (拖欠) more than $6,000 in back taxes (退税款) and will enter foreclosure next year if that debt is not settled. So while the owner is asking for an iPhone 6, the true cost of the sale comes from the buyer including the cost of the back taxes. That attracted great interest in the property, as Else said that he received four offers today alone. One woman said she was interested in the house for the wood. Another said that they would be willing to hand over an iPhone 5, and another offered $ 850. But Else hinted that the most likely buyer is someone who already lives on the block and put in a $ 700 bid (出价), and their familiarity with the area appeared to put them at the head of the pack. He said he expects one of the four offers to work out, and may even confirm the sale tonight. This is not the end of his bartering (物物交换) business, however, as Else said that he’s already gotten another call from a homeowner who has had trouble selling their property.21. It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t recognize you or any of their friends --- every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time. But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago.In the study, researchers from MacEwan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again.Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggested that they could remember their past experiences. In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past ―fights‖. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence.Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild.―If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go backto that area without putting their lives at risks,‖ lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science. For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence.32.What is the article mainly about?A.Fish having very bad memories.B.Fish being smarter than we thought.C.How fish improve their memory.D.What we can learn from fish.33.According to the article, people used to believe that _______.A.fish could only remember part of their past experiencesB.fish could remember things that happened 12 days agoC. a fish’s memory lasted for only seven minutesD.fish didn’t recognize any of their friends34.How can fish benefit most from a good memory? They can remember _______.A.where to get food and surviveB.their enemies and fightC.where to escape to when in dangerD.their friends and help each other35.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Fish behave aggressively in a fight.B.Fish can remember more.C.Fish don’t belong to the list of smart animals.D.Only African cichlids have a good memory.第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节完形填空(共20小题;每题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、 B 、C 、D)中,选出可以填入空白University Can WaitI was on my way to the library to do some studying for history class. spends using electronic devices such as computers and smartphones, the worse their sleep will be,a study of nearly 10,00016-to 19-year-olds suggests.More than two hours of screen time after school was strongly linked to both delayed and shorter sleep.Almost all the teens from Norway said they used the devices shortly before going to bed. Many said they often got less than five hours sleep a night. The teens were asked questions about their sleep routine on weekdays and at weekends,as well as how much screen time they clocked up outside school hours. On average, girls said they spent around five and a half hours a day watching TV or using computers, smartphones or other electronic devices. And boys spent slightly more time in front of a screen around six and a half hours a day,on average.Playing computer games was more popular among the boys, whereas girls were more likely to spend their time chatting online!Any type of screen use during the day and in the hour before bedtime appeared to disturb sleep—making it more difficult for teenagers to nod off.And the more hours they spent on thesedevices, the more disturbed their sleep became:When daytime screen use totalled four or more hours, teens had a 49%greater risk of taking longer than an hour to fall asleep. These teens also tended to get less than five hours of sleep per night.Dr.Hysing said her findings had suggestions for the wider population as so many people use these devices.“We know that sufficient sleep is essential for good physical and mental health.Logging off may be one important step toward securing a good night's sleep.”Prof Rnssell Foster, an expert the University of Oxford, said,“This is an importa nt study as it provides practical evidence that the use of electronic devices before bed does M: Of course!Text 3W: My phone bill seems to go up every month. I don’t know what’s going on.M: You need to look at your bill carefully every month. Maybe I should get another book to read.W: I don’t think that’s what your professor had in mind when he gave you that assignment. Text 5W: I know it’s the day be fore the test, but I really need your help. My professor is busy with meetings all day. I can’t fail this class. I’ll pay double your normal rate. M: OK, let me check my schedule…Text 6W: That’s a beautiful necklace there…the one behind the diamond ring. Can I take a look at it?M: Of course, madam. This just came in yesterday. I’m also looking for some oranges, but I can see the fruit section just to the left over there. I’ll let you know if I need any more help.Text 10The subway system in San Francisco serves the transportation needs of about five million residents, with 45 stations across a dozen cities and towns in the San Francisco Bay Area. There are a total of four lines that are known by color: yellow, orange, red, and blue. All lines travel through San Fran cisco, and service runs from 5:00 a.m. to m idnight. An interesting fact is that only one third of the stations are below street level; the rest are either at street level or travel high above the freeway. Th e average speed of the trains is 35 miles per hour, but they can go up to 80 m iles an hour. The cost to ride the trains depends on how far you want to go. Many people who live in the suburbs take the train into San Francisco to go to work. This means that the system is very crowded from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., but outside these times, the subway system is not very busy. This can be great if you want to get a seat, but it also means that there are fewer trains. During rush hour, trains come every 5-10 minutes, but in the middle of the day and late at night, trains come every 20-30 minutes.。

AAs you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week. Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them. Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny. Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted t o have a farm then,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. Howe ver, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”21.The passage tells us that .A.people seldom work long hours to make moneyB.people hardly buy more things than necessaryC.people are sure everything they own is in the right placeD.people realize there is more to life than just making money22.When Daniel was a reporter he ___.A.lived in central London B.disliked his jobC.missed his children D.was well paid23.What does the author mean by saying “the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives” in the second paragraph ?A.People work long hours to earn their living.B.To make more money through hard work is the aim of people’s life.C.Long hours of hard work occupy too much of people’s life.D.People spent too much time and money eating meals.24.The underlined word “downshifting” in the second paragraph refers to _________.A.repairing your car by yourselfB.spending money carefullyC.moving out to the countryside to live a simpler and better lifeD.living in a big house in the suburbs and dining out once a weekB.The website "FarmersOnly. com" calls itself an online dating and friendship finder. The idea started in the mind of a man, Jerry Miller in Ohio. He wondered how farmers could meet new people who understand the life of a farmer. Jerry Miller is not a farmer but he represents a lot of farmers. As he tells it, the idea for the site was planted when a farmer told him one day that she was recently divorced and would like to date. But someone would invite her to meet for coffee at nine o’clock at night, when she had to start her day at five the next morning. So, in 2005, Jerry Miller launched his website. "You don’t have to be a farmer to be on "FarmersOnly. com". But you do have to have the good old-fashioned traditional values of America’s heartland. "You also have to live in the United States or Canada to be a member of the site. Some services are free, but a full membership costs fifty dollars for a year. As of last week the site listed more than 58,000 members. Many of them are farmers in the United States. Others are students orworkers involved in some way with agriculture. Jerry Miller tells us about thirty marriages in the last year have resulted from his website. Some farmers have also found love through a group, Singles in Agriculture, which was formed as a nonprofit organization in 1986.It organizes gatherings that usually end with a dance, but is not a dating service. The purpose is to support educational and social activities that offer people a chance for friendship. Its website, "", says there are more than l,000 members across the nation and as far away as France.25. It is a proper method of growing plants on the roof and does not refer to the mere green color of the roof. People benefit a lot from these green roofing systems, and they are gaining popularity day by day.Human beings have occupied major areas of land and transformed them into huge buildings, which has severely affected the environment and the natural habitat of bird and insects. Green roofing compensates for that. It creates a natural habitat for creatures like bees, grasshoppers and other insects.Modern roofs need a lot of energy to control the temperatures in winter and summer. However, green roofs reduce the amount of energy required for controlling temperatures, thus making them energy-efficient. As green roofing is highly energy-efficient, it can act as a encouragement for people who are interested in green roofing systems and their benefits. It will increase the market value of the building and fetch the owner a great share of profit. As the vegetation requires a water supply, there is a inbuilt water preservation layer in the green roof system. This layer helps to keep the rainwater. It makes full use of the rainwater and prevents wastage. During heavy rains, the water runs off the flat roof. The green roof prevents this overflow by slowing down the volume of running water.Green roofs can compensate for the lost greenery in urban areas and increase the artistic value of an area. Your building will look beautiful, coated with green vegetation. Their teachers completed questionnaires abo ut the students’ academic(学术的) efforts. He found that some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students always had the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.“At all points in time, teachers considered the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,” according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit (学分), being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.“Dating a classmate may be as complicated as dating a co-worker,” Orpinas said,“when the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps see the ex-partner dating someone else.
