2012届高考英语专题复习精选资料集〔一〕(一)Schools of robotic fish could be sent into the Thames to produce a 3D pollution map of the river.Researchers at the University of Essex in Colchester are working on the robotic fish as part of a £2.5 million EUfunded project to find new ways of monitoring water waste. Each fish will be about 50cm long, 15cm high and 12cm wide. They will be packed with pollution sensors(传感器)that can electronically “smell〞 harmful chemicals in the water.Scientists have developed “swarm(群) intelligence techniques〞 which allow the fish to work as a team without humans. The robotic fish will communicate with each other using wifi as they seek out areas of pollution. They work out where they are with inbuilt GPS systems and artificial intelligence software will enable them to move without the need for a human operator: they will only warn staff if areas of pollution are found.A fish that finds pollution sends the data of the location to others.“Each school will contain five fish, and they will constant ly monitor for pollutants,〞 said Dr.Dongbing Gu, who is leading the research.“When they find something, they will send a message to the rest of the school, who will then gather in the area to take readings.〞The fish move their bodies up and down like waves—driven by motors—and use fins and a tail to change direction. It is hoped they will travel at speeds of up to half a metre per second.Working models could be available within 18 months.Different sensors will be fitted to hunt for different pollutants.Th e data could be used to build a “real time〞 3Dmap of areas of pollution in the water, allowing operators to determine the best way to clean up the area. The fish will initially be used in ports to monitor leaks from large ships, but Dr Gu said the same system could be used in the Thames.Researchers hope the robotic fish will be able to spend up to 24 hours in the water before needing to be recharged. The study found plants from the same species of beachdwelling wildflower grew aggressively alongside unrelated neighbors but were less competitive when they shared soil with their families.Sea rocket, a North American species, showed stronger and healthier root growth when planted in pots with strangers than when raised with relatives from the same maternal(母系的) family, the study found.( )2.Which of the following is NOT right about animals’ social skill? 2012届高考英语专题复习精选资料集(四十一).pdf

2012届高考英语专题复习精选资料集(四十一) (A) The statement, “you can do anything you put your mind to,” leads us to believe that all you must do is imagine what you’d like to accomplish, set your mind to the task, and wait for success. To a certain degree this is true.Focused intention combined with action is a powerful force. But the statement is misleading because it fails to mention the difficulty and necessity of focusing your mind on a special goal. Most of us don’t know what we want.We think we do, but we really don’t.we only know what we don’t want.We don’t want a boring job.We don’t want to be poor.We don’t want to disappoint our loved ones. Knowing specially what you want is much different from knowing what you don’t want. When you only know what you don’t, your intentions aren’t focused.Consider this example. Pete doesn’t want to be poor. He’s sick of earning less than his friends, and he’s determined to raise his position. To accomplish this goal, Pete could take many different paths. He could train for a high paying profession. He could start his own company, go into real estate, or do many other thingsthat would lead to acquiring wealth. But Pete isn’t sure what he wants to do.He doesn’t know which path best fits his skills and personally, so he doesn’t make a decision to follow any particular path. Hoping to answer this question, he investigates a dozen possibilities, but as soon as he runs into adversity(困难), he decides that path isn’t for him and moves on to a new solution. Pete’s actions aren’t focused.Although he works very hard, his efforts don’t build on each other rather than building one giant impenetrable(不可进入的)sand castle, Pete has built twenty small ones that are easily toppled (倒塌).He ends up confused and discouraged. What’s worse, Pete’s lack of focus leads to failure. What if Pete had chosen a specific path? A set of specific goals is much easier to achieve than a vague ultimate goal like becoming wealthy.Being focused on a path gives Pete a logical set of actions to follow. Each accomplishment is one step closer to the final goal. I think we can all agree that committing to a clearly defined path, regardless of which one, gives Pete the best chance of becoming wealthy. But how can he choose a path if he doesn’t know what he wants? Maybe money isn’t his only goal.Maybe he wants to do something he loves at the same time.Maybe he can’t afford to go back to school.Reality is complicated, and Pete doesn’t want to commit too soon. And that’s why he failed. 1.powerful 2.necessary 3.Not 4.though/although 5.rich/wealthy 6.efforts 7.failure 8.achieve/ accomplish/reach 9.vague/unclear 10.Besides()Parents can help their seventh and eighth grade students stand out in and out oftheir English classroom by introducing them to newspapers. Newspapers not only offer information on current events, but they can also be used to test your child's knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and more. Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How Have your child read the first couple of paragraphs of a news story. Ask them to write down all of the important facts, such as who, what, where, when, why and how. This helps parents to see if their children comprehend the basic facts and information they read. Grammar Parents can monitor a child's understanding of grammatical parts of speech (词性) without a grammar textbook. Ask your child to read a paragraph in an article and then list a specific number of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and the like, which serves more of a test of their grammatical knowledge. Encourage them to list each of these parts of speech in a paragraph. Then, reread the paragraph to see if they missed anything. Persuasion Ask your child to select an advertisement from the newspaper. Have them investigate how specific words or phrases influence their feelings about a particular product. Then, encourage them to create an advertisement of their own for an item they do not like. Tell them not to show their true feelings and try to make people want to buy this unwanted item. After that, ask them to list the persuasive techniques used in their ad. Facts vs Opinions Select an editorial for your middle schooler to read. Have your child divide a piece of paper into two columns, one marked fact, and the other marked opinion. Have your student decide which column itfits under. This will help your child better understand facts versus opinions. Another related exercise is responding to an editorial. Encourage your child to write letters to the editor or responses to editorials or other articles. Before your child sends his or her letter, check the opinion section to see what requirements there are. Headlines and Synonyms (同义词) Ask your middle schooler to rewrite a couple of headlines using the synonyms of the original words. Compare the headlines. Do the original versions or the rewrites sound better? This is a great exercise to help students learn synonyms and expand their vocabulary. If you find your seventh or eighth grade child is struggling with these newspaper activities, it may be an indicator that they have fallen behind in their reading skills. These activities were designed with a seventh or eighth grader in mind; therefore, while they are educational, they should be more of reinforcement (增强) instead of a major reading challenge. OutlineSupporting detailsAn approach to learning 1 students in seventh and eighth grades to newspapers can be helpful in learning English.Newspaper 2 ● Ask students to read the first paragraphs of a news story and write down the important and 3 facts to see if they can understand them. ● Have students read an article and list different parts of speech to improve their understanding of 4 . ● Select an ad and ask students to find the persuasive expressions 5 in it, and then create their own ad for a product they dislike. ● Select an editorial and have students 6 between facts and opinions. (2011-8)From the first use of the rocket to carry satellites into space to the setting up of space stations, human beings have been putting great effort into space research. And so far, we have achieved many successes. But there are still numerous tasks in front of us and we should not cease trying to progress. The international space station is an important step we should take in space exploration. It is not only helpful but also essential. It provides a proper space environment for many experiments that we have wanted to do for a long time. It is also a base for the observations of the earth and the universe. It could also be an important base for later travel to the moon and Mars. In a word, if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do is to set up a space station. As the space station costs a lot of money, it is hard for one country alone to establish one. The USA seems to be the only country that has the ability to build a space station alone, and it has tried to do so, but not very successful. So it aggregated many other countries to work on it together. Though it is still extremely expensive, it is much cheaper than doing it alone. It is really a job that needs everyo ne‟ s effort and will benefit everyone. But even so, the funds needed are still a big problem. As for the USA, it seems that it has too many things to spend its money on. Although it is the richest country in the world, it has much debt every year. It has to make arrangements about its finance, and try to find a balance in all these issues.[语篇解读]这是一篇说明文。

(2011-8)Several times each year the Queen gives afternoon tea parties at which guests are served tiny cakes filled with cream from her own cows. Cakes and sandwiches are brought in by footmen, yet you never see the Queen touch a thing. She simply sits beside a big silver plate, pouring cups of tea for everyone and carefully avoiding the cakes. At cocktail parties the Queen moves from group to group, chatting informally, and manages to make one glass of diet(节食)drink to last an entire evening.Tours abroad are difficult because hosts(主人)seem to believe the warmth of their welcome must be shown with wonderful state banquets(宴会). But the Queen has perfected the art of appearing to enjoy her meal without actually eating much.During one visit to the Pacific islands of Tonga, a specially-prepared dinner was arranged in a hut made of wood and bamboo leaves. Deep holes were dug in the ground, filled with hot stones and baby pigs, and the pigs were slowly baked over several days. The Queen looked uneasily at her plate when she discovered a whole roast pig was her serving. Then she became uneasy when a turkey, some meat, bananas and an apple were also carried in for each guest. So she depended on her old favorite trick of talking with her host. , King Tupou IV, carrying on a warm conversation. At the same time she pushed her food around her plate and only ate a piece of turkey and some fruit.Reporters traveling with her have noted that the Queen will sometimes seem so carried away by a foreign leader‘s political chat that she simply never has time to finish a meal before it is time to get up and make her speech. She will lift her fork to swallow a mouthful, then put it down again to make another point, leaving almost all of her meal untouched.1. The main idea of the passage is about ____.A. the Queen‘s favorite foodB. the Queen‘s tours abroadC. how the Queen keeps her diet during her toursD. the Queen‘s trouble with a foreign leader2. The Queen talked with her host and carried on conversation with him. The purpose of doing this is ____.A. to show her politenessB. not to eat muchC. to show her great interest in foodD. to hide her dislike to the food3. What probably is the Queen‘s art of acting at state dinners?A. Appearing to enjoy her meal without actually eating much.B. Drinking Malvern water.C. Eating a piece of turkey and some fruit.D. (2011-8)Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago,and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends. My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him;as a school girl and young adult (成年人) I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard. On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before? The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my_new_friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.1. Why did the author feel bitter about her father as a young adult?A. (2011-8)Can you believe your eyes? A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age.Martin Doherty, a psychologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland, led the team of scientists. In this experiment, Doherty and his team tested the perception(观察力) of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10, and the second group included 24 adults aged 18 to 25.The first group of pictures showed two circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identify the larger one. Four-year-olds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time. Adults identified the correct circle 95 percent of the time.Next, both groups were shown a picture where the orange circles, again of different sizes, were surrounded by gray circles. Her e‟s where the trick lies in. In some of the pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller gray circles — making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which was the real larger one. And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger gray circles —so it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle. When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they weren‟t fooled—they were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy as before. Older children and adults, on the other hand, did not do as well. Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one, and adults got it wrong most of the time.As children get older, Doherty said, their brains may develop the ability to identify visual context. In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once: the tricky gray circles, as well as the orange circle in the middle. As a result, they‟re more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick.1. Doherty and his team of scientists did an experiment to evaluate________.A. children‟s and adults‟ eye-sightB. people‟s ability to see accuratelyC. children‟s and adults‟ brainsD. the influence of people‟s age[解析]考查细节理解能力。

Module 5 Newspapers and MagazinesⅠ.阅读理解A词数360 难度系数★★建议用时7′(2011·潍坊质量检测)Sydney—A shark savaged a schoolboy'sleg while he was surfing with his father at a beach in Sydney onFebruary 23.It was the third shark attack along the coast ofAustralia's largest city in a month. The 15-year-old boy and his father were in the water offAvalon,on Sydney's northern beaches, around dawn when he wasattacked. The city's beaches are packed with locals and tourists during the summer months.“The father heard a scream and turned to see his son thrashing(激烈扭动)about in the water,”police said.“Fortunately, the shark swam away and the boy was helped to the shore by his father.”Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller said,“It got him around the top of his left leg and the father came and dragged him out of water.”He said the boy was bleeding heavily when he was brought to the shore.“There was a lot of pain,as you can imagine.”The teenager was airlifted to hospital for treatment for leg injuries.Police said the bites “cut through to the bone”,but the boy did not appear to have sustained any fractures (骨折).He was in a stable condition now.Several beaches were closed after the attack.Water police and lifeguards were searching for the shark, while police hoped to identify its species by the shape of the bite marks. But they said it was too early to say what type of shark attacked the boy.“I don't even know if he saw it,”Miller said. Many shark species live in the waters off Sydney's beaches, but attacks on humans are still relatively rare. However, there were two attacks on successive days earlier this month, one on a navy diver in Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House, and the other on a surfer at the city's world-famous Bondi beach.Fishermen say shark numbers are on the rise. There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor, which has increased fish stocks.Marine experts also claim environmental protection has created a cleaner environment, attracting sharks closer to the shore as they chase fish. Many shark species, including the Great White—the man-eaters made famous in Steven Spielberg's Ja w s—are protected in Australian waters.一、新新单词treatment /'trItmənt/ n. 治疗,疗法identify /aI'dentIfaI/ v.识别;确认;认出二、常用短语search for 寻找on the rise 在上升;在增加中三、靓点句式There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor, which has increased fish stocks.which引导非限制性定语从句。

It is really a job that needs everyone‟ s effort and wil l benefit everyone.

One potential problem with allowance s is that children‟s responsible behavior can become about earning the allowance rather than the intrinsic (固有的) value of their family responsibilities. For example, if you pay your children for taking out the trash, they see thischore (家务) as a job that they should be rewarded for instead of a responsibility they must fulfill as part of the family. But giving children an allowance for weekly chores is not necessarily bad. You are rewarding them for fulfilling their family responsibilities, but it is not for a specific act. Rather, it is an appreciation of their commitment to your family values. You are also conveying another important message that their actions have consequences: if they do good things, good things happen. They also learn a lesson about the market economy, namely that work is rewarded.Allowances can also be used as punishment and to teach children lessons about family values. For example, if your children join a group of kids smashing (砸碎) pumpkins on Halloween, a part of a reasonable punishment might be to require them to pay the families out of their allowances to replace the pumpkins. Thus, your children learn that bad behavior has financial consequences. Also, by relating the punishment to the misdeed, you ensure that your children see the connection and learn the value lesson. How much allowance should you pay your children? The precise amount depends on your family‟ s financial situation, the cost of living and your children‟s needs. Children can start to earn a weekly allowance as early as 5 years of age. An increase of $ 1 per week for each ydar of your children‟ s lives is realistic until they reach their mid teens. When they begin to drive and date, you can calculate their expenses and establish a reasonable allowance that covers their needs.[语篇解读]本文为议论文,就“孩子做家务要不要给予物质奖励”这一话题进行谈论。
