Package Holidays (1993)Package holidays, covering a two weeks' stay in an attractive place, are increasingly popular. Once you get to the airport, it is up to the tour operator to see that you get safely to your destination.Everything is laid on for you. There is, in fact, no reason for you to bother to arrange anything yourselves. You make friends and have a good time. But there is very little chance that you will really get to know the local people. This is even less likely on a coach tour, when you spend almost your entire time traveling.Of course, there are carefully planned stops for you to visit historic buildings and monuments. You may visit the beautiful, the historic, the ancient. But time is always short. There is also the added disadvantage of being obliged to spend you holiday with a group of people you have never met before. The American Family (1994)The American family unit is changing. There used to be mainly two types of families, the extended and the nuclear. The former included mother, father, children, and some other relatives such as grandparents, living in the same house or nearby. Then as the economy progressed from agricultural to industrial, people began moving to different parts of the country in order to search for job opportunities. These moves split up the extended family. The nuclear family consisting of only parents and children has therefore become far more wide spread. Today’s family, however, can be composed of diverse combinations. With the divorce rate nearly one in two, there's an increase in single-parent homes—a father or mother living with one or more children. Blended families occur when divorced men and women remarry and combine the children from former marriages into a new family. On the other hand, there is an increase in childless couples while one in rive Americans lives alone.Unidentified Flying Objects (1995)There are many explanations for why UFOs visit the Earth. / The most popular one is that they maybe visitors from other planets./ To fly such aircraft, their builders must develop different forms of aviation,/because they seem to fly much faster than normal aircraft./ The UFOs, it is believed, must contain scientists/ from other planets who are studying life on earth./ It is even believed that several such aircraft may have landed on earth/ and the space visitors may be living amongst us./ But there are also less fantastic explanations available./ Although some sightings of UFOs are difficult to explain, most can be explained quite easily./ In many cases the observers might have made a mistake./ They might have seen a weather balloon or an aircraft./ Or the light they saw in the sky might have been light from the ground,/ reflected on to the clouds./ However, the exact cause of many sightings still remained a mystery. The Indian Medicine Man (1996)Among the Indians of North America, the medicine man was a very important person. He could cure illness and he could speak to the spirits. The spirits were the supernatural forces thatcontrolled the world. The Indians believed that bad spirits made people ill. So when people were ill, the medicine man tried to help them by using magic. He spoke to the good spirits and asked for their help. Many people were cured, because they thought the spirits were helping them, but really these people cured themselves. Sometimes your own mind is the best doctor for you. The medicine men were often successful for another reason, too. They knew about plants that really can cure illness. A lot of medicines are made from the plants that were used by medicine men hundred of years ago.Legal Age for Marriage (1997)Throughout the United States, the legal age for marriage shows some difference. The most common age without parents’ consent is 18 for both females and males. However, persons who are under age in their home state can get married in another state, and then return to the home state legally married. Each state issues its own marriage license. Both residents and non-residents are qualified for such a license. The fees and ceremonies vary greatly from state to state. Most states, for instance, have a blood test requirement, but a few do not. Most states permit either a civil or religious ceremony, but a few require the ceremony to be religious. In most states a waiting period is required before the license is issued. This period is from one to five days depending on the state.A three-day-wait is the most common. In some states there is no required waiting period. The Railways in Britain (1998)The success of early railways, such as the lines between big cities,/ led to a great increase in railway building in Victorian times. / Between 1835 and 1865 about 25000 kilometers of track were built,/ and over 100 railway companies were created. /Railway travel transformed people's lives. / Trains were first designed to carry goods. / However, a law in the 19th century forced railway companies to run one cheap train a day / which stopped at every station and cost only a penny a mile. / Soon working class passengers found they could afford to travel by rail. / Cheap day excursion trains became popular and seaside resorts grew rapidly. / The railways also provided thousands of new jobs:/ building carriages, running the railways and repairing the tracks. / Railways even changed the time. / The need to run the railways on time meant that local time was abolished/ and clocks showed the same time all over the country. /United Nations Day (1999)The 24th of October is celebrated as United Nations Day. h is a day that belongs to everyone. And it is celebrated in most countries of the world. Some countries celebrate for a week instead of a day. In many parts of the world, schools have special programs for the day. Boys and girls in some communities decorate a UN tree. In other communities, young people put on plays about the UN.Some libraries exhibit children’s art works from around the world. Schools celebrate with the songs and dances of other countries or give parties where foods of other countries are served. No matter how the day is celebrated, the purpose of these celebrations is to help everyone understand the UN, and the important roles it plays in world affairs. The UN encourages people to learn about other lands and their customs. In this way, people can gain a better understanding and appreciation of peoples all over the world. What We Know About Language (2000)Many things about language are a mystery and will remain so. However, we now do know something about it. First, we know that all human beings have a language of some sort. No human race anywhere on earth is so backward that it has no language of its own at all. Second, there is no such thing as a primitive language. There are many peoples whose cultures are undeveloped but the languages they speak are by no means primitive. In all the languages existing in the world today, there are complexities that must have been developed for years. Third, we know that all languages are perfectly adequate. Each is a perfect means of expressing its culture. And finally, we know that language changes over time, which is natural and normal if a language is to survive. The language which remains unchanged is nothing but dead.Characteristics of A Good Reader (2001)To improve your reading habits, you must understand the characteristics of a good reader. First, the good reader usually reads rapidly. Of course, he does not read every piece of material at the same rate. But whether he is reading a newspaper or a chapter in a physics text, his reading rate is relatively fast. He has learned to read for ideas rather than words one at a time. Next, the good reader can recognize and understand general ideas and specific details. Thus he is able to comprehend the material with a minimum of effort and a maximum of interest. Finally, the good reader has in his command several special skills, which he can apply to reading problems as they occur. For the college student, the most helpful of these skills include making use of the various aids to understanding that most text books provide and skim-reading for a general survey.Disappearing Forests (2002)The world’s forests are disappearing. As much as 1/3 of the total tree cover has been lost since agriculture began some 10,000 years ago. The remaining forests are home to half of the world’s species, thus becoming the chief resource for their survival. Tropical rain forests once covered 12% of the land of the planet, as well as supporting at l east half of the world’s species of plants and animals. These rain forests are home to millions of people. But there are other demands on them. For example, much has been cut for timber. An increasing amount of forest land has been used for industrial purposes or for agricultural development such as crop-growing. By the 1990’s less than half of the earth’s original rain forests remained, and they continued to disappear at an alarming rate every year. As a result the world’s forests are now facing gradual ex tinction.Salmon (2003)Every year, millions of salmon swim from the ocean into the mouths of rivers and then steadily up the rivers. Passing through waters, around rocks and waterfalls, the fish finally reach their original streams or lakes. They dig out nests in the riverbed and lay their eggs. Then, exhausted by their journey, the parent salmon die. They have finished the task that nature has given them. Months, or years later, the young fish start their trip to the ocean. They live in the salt water from 2-7 years, until they, too are ready to swim back to reproduce. Their life cycle helps man provide himself with a basic food-fish. When the adult salmon gather at the river mouths for the annual trip up the rivers, they are in the best possible condition, and nearly every harbor has its salmon fishing fleet ready to catch thousands for markets.Money (2004)Money is accepted across the world as payment for goods or services. People use money to buy food, clothes and hundreds of other things. In the past, many different things were used as money. People on Pacific islands once exchanged shells for goods. The Chinese used cloth and knives. In Africa, elephant tusks or salt were used. Even today, some people in Africa are still paid in salt. Coins were first invented by the Chinese. Originally, they were round pieces of metal with a hole in the center, so that a piece of string could keep them together. This made doing business much easier, but people still found coins inconvenient to carry when they wanted to buy something expensive. To solve this problem, the Chinese again came up with the solution. They began to use paper money for coins. Now paper notes are used throughout the world. The Wrist Watch (2005)It is generally believed that wrist watches are an exception / to the normal sequence in the evolution of man's jewelry. / Reversing the usual order, they were first worn by women, / and then adopted by men. / In the old days, queens included wrist watches among their crown jewelry. / Later, they were worn by Swiss workers and farmers. / Until World War I, Americans associated the watch with fortune hunters. / Then army officers discovered that the wrist watch was most practical for active combat. / Race car drivers also loved to wear wrist watches, / and pilots found them most useful while flying. / Soon men dared to wear wrist watches without feeling self-conscious. / By 1924, some 30 percent of man's watches were worn on the wrist. / Today, the figure is 90 percent. / And they are now worn by both men and women / for practical purposes rather than for decoration. The Internet (2006)The Internet is the most significant progress in the field of communications. / Imagine a book that never ends, a library with a million floors, / or imagine a research project with thousands of scientists / working around the clock forever. / This is the magic of the Internet. / Yet the Internet has the potential for good and bad. / One can find well-organized, information-rich websites. / At the same time, one can also find wasteful websites. / Most websites are known as different Internet applications. / These include online games, chat rooms (chatrooms) and so on. / These applications have great power, too. / Sometimes the power can be so great / that young people may easily become victims to their attraction. / So we need to recognize the seriousness of the problem. / We must work together to use its power for better ends.。

UNIT 6Section One Tactics for ListeningPart 1 Spot DictationWind and SpiritWe do notice the wind when it seems (1) cruel, when the trees turn away from it, and it (2) cuts into our hearts. "Certain winds will make men's (3) temper bad", said George Eliot. In Southern California, the Santa Ana is (4) associated with an increase in depression and domestic (5) violence.Scientists have tried (6)without success to identify physiological reasons for these (7) reactions. Everyone agrees, however, that (8)dry winds like the Santa Ana, the mistral in France and the foehn* in Germany and Switzerland seem to have (9) negative effects on our mental and physical (10) well-being.On windy days, playground fights, (11) suicides and heart failures are more (12) frequent. In Geneva, traffic accidents (13) increase when a wind called the bise* blows. At the (14) request of patients, some Swiss and German hospitals (15) postpone surgery during the foehn. It is human to ask what is (16) behind the wind. It is easy to personify the wind as the (17) breath of God. The act of taking wind into our lungs is what (18) gives us life. The Jews, Arabs, Romans and Greeks all took their word for (19) spirit from the word for wind. But our day-to-day lives are no longer (20 blown on the winds. We do notidentify wind with spirit anymore.Part 2 Listening for GistA cat got on to a Scandinavian Airlines plane in Nairobi yesterday and cost the company about £10,000. One of the 66 passengers heard a strange "miaow" when the plane landed in Copenhagen. Mechanics arrived immediately and the airline company phoned for an animal ambulance. The mechanics found the cat after eight hours' work. It had got into the air-conditioning system in Nairobi. The plane was twelve hours late leaving for Tokyo, costing the company £10,000. The cat was quite well after its experience and was given a large bowl of milk and a plate of fish.ExerciseDirections: Listen to the passage and find its topic sentence. The topic sentence is "A cat got on to a Scandinavian Airlines plane in Nairobi yesterday and cost the company about £10.000."Section TwoListening ComprehensionPart 1 DialogueWhat a Coincidence!Storyteller: Talking of coincidences, did I tell you about what happened to me andJeannie last holiday?Friend(s): No.Storyteller: We went on holiday in the States and we went to Mexico. Well, we were driving down to Mexico City. We were going to spend a few days in Palm Beach ... see the sea, look up an old friend, you know. As we left there we stopped at a garage for a car check ... oil, the water, the tires, all that ... petrol. And the mechanics spotted something. They said that our fuel pump was not working properly and it was quite serious ... it would cost a lot of money ... well, we were very worried.Friend(s): Were you insured?Storyteller: Well, no, we weren't and I didn't have that much money on me, you know. It was meant to be a cheap holiday. Well, just then, two men drove up and they said what's the problem? And, do you know? They were mechanics - it was such good luck. They looked at our car and they said, "There's nothing wrong with your car. Don't spend money on it. Just forget about it." Well, naturally, we were worried, but ... er, I thought ... I'll trust them, I think they're right. So, we drove on, we crossed the Mexican border and had a marvelous few days sightseeing there round Monterey. Friend(s):Oh, oh, brilliant ... jealous ...Storyteller: And then we went on and on to Mexico City. We drove about forty kilometers and then we saw a car with the same US number plates as the other car we'd seen in Palm Beach.Friend(s): You're joking!Storyteller: It was parked by the road, and the same two men who gave us the adviceabout our car were stuck with their car.Friend(s): Oh, no!Storyteller: So, we stopped and asked them what was wrong. And do you know? Their car had broken down for exactly the same reason: The fuel pump wasn't working! It was quite extraordinary.ExerciseDirections: Listen to the dialogue and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F)l. T 2.T 3.F 4.F 5.T 6.F 7.T 8.FPart 2 PassageCorporate Culture1.How well the employee "fits" the culture can make the difference betweenjob-search success and failure.2.It guides how employees think, act, and feel.3.The amount of time outside the office you're expected to spend with co-workers is part of the corporate culture.4.The truth is that you will never really know the corporate culture until you have worked at the company for a number of months.5.It should be a place where you can have a voice, be respected, and have opportunities for growth. Why should jobseekers care about a potential employer's corporate culture? Aren't there more important factors to consider, such as the job itself, salary and bonuses, and fringe benefits〔附加福利〕? These factors are indeed important, but increasingly career experts are talking about the importance of employee-employer fit in terms of culture, with the idea that how well the employee "fits" the culture can make the difference between job-search success and failure. What is corporate culture? At its most basic, it's described as the personality of an organization, or simply as "how things are done around here". It guides how employees think, act, and feel. Corporate culture is a broad term〔广义的术语〕used to define the unique personality or character of a particular company or organization, and includes such elements as core values and beliefs, corporate ethics〔企业伦理,公司道德〕, and rules of behavior. Corporate culture can be expressed in the company's mission statement〔宗旨〕and other communications, in the architectural style or interior decoration of offices, by what people wear to work, by how people address each other, and in the titles given to various employees. How does a company's culture affect you? In many, many ways. For instance: •The hours you work per day, per week, including options such as flextime and telecommuting.•The work environment, including how employees interact, the degree of competition, and whether it's a fun or hostile environment - or somethingin-between.•The dress code, including the accepted styles of attire* and things such as casual days.•The office space you get, including things such as cubicles*, window offices, and rules regarding display of personal items.•The training and skills development you receive, which you need both on the job and to keep yourself marketable for future jobs and employers.•Onsite perks〔特别的待遇〕, such as break rooms, gyms and play rooms, daycare facilities, and more.•The amount of time outside the office you're expected to spend with co-workers.•Interaction with other employees, including managers and top management. How do you uncover the corporate culture of a potential employer? The truth is that you will never really know the corporate culture until you have worked at the company for a number of months, but you can get close to it through research and observation. Understanding culture is a two-step process, starting with research before the interview and ending with observation at the interview. If you get a chance to meet with other employees, you can ask some questions to try and get a handle on an organization's corporate culture. Such as:•What's it really like to work here?•What skills and characteristics does the company value?•How do people get promoted around here?•The bottom line is that you are going to spend a lot of time in the work environment ---and to be happy, successful and productive, you’ll want to bein a place where you fit the culture, a place where you can have a voice, berespected and have opportunity for growth.A:Pre-listening QuestionMany articles and books have been written in recent years about culture in organizations, usually referred to as "Corporate Culture". The dictionary defines culture as "the act of developing intellectual and moral faculties, especially through education". Some people define it as "the moral, social, and behavioral norms of an organization based on the beliefs, attitudes, and priorities of its members".Every organization has its own unique culture or value set. Most organizations don't consciously try to create a certain culture. The culture of the organization is typically created unconsciously, based on the values of the top management or the founders of an organization.B:Sentence DictationDirections: Listen to some sentences and write them down. But the top U.S. military officer, Admiral Mike Mullen, told ABC's Good Morning America television program Tuesday the taking and rescue of the American cargo ship captain led him to order a new effort to find ways to effectively deal with the pirates.Admiral Mullen and Defense Secretary Robert Gates say there is no purely military solution to the Somali piracy problem. Piracy continues to rise, even as navy ships from 16 nations patrol the area. And Gates said Monday that the problem is "probably going to get worse" until the international community can, in his words, "get something on land that begins to change the equation" for the "incredible number of poor people" in Somalia, some of whom turn to piracy.Efforts by some ship owners to secure their ships have had some success. They have installed barbed wire, removed ladders and changed their routes, among othersteps. But there has been resistance to proposals to put armed guards on commercial ships.Corporations have paid tens of millions of dollars for the safe return of ships and their crews in the area in recent years. Last year, there were 111 piracy incidents in the region, triple the number the previous year. And this year, there have already been nearly 70 incidents.Exercise ADirections: Listen to the news item and complete the summary. This news item is about the US looking for new approaches to Somali piracy.Exercise BDirections: Listen'to the news again and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F).1.F2.T3.F4.T5.F6. His appointment appears to be something of a gesture to the U.S.Neither the U.S., nor the other members of the so-called Group of five-plus-one, including the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, plus Germany, however, is likely to agree with Salehi about the closure of Tehran's nuclear file.U.S. President Barack Obama warned Tehran, during the G-8 summit in Italy, that the world is giving it until September to comply with U.N. resolutions over its controversial nuclear program.Iran has persistently refused to stop enriching uranium, and the West fears that it will use highly enriched uranium to build atomic weapons. The Iranian government, however, continues to insist that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful, civilian purposes, alone.Iran analyst Meir Javedanfar of the MEEPAS (Middle East Economic and Political Analysis) center in Tel Aviv argues that Tehran is hardening its position over its nuclear dossier, in response to Western criticism over its violent crackdown against its own people following the June 12 presidential elections.Javedanfar, however, believes that those who are seeking a compromise with Iran should not despair completely, because Iranian leaders are pragmatists, and may at the end of the day be ready for an agreement.Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Motaki said one week ago that Tehran was preparing to present a "new package" of proposals, concerning what he called "international, security and political issues," to the West for talks.Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has also warned the West that Tehran would weigh their criticism over its crackdown on protesters following the June 12 election, in assessing future relations with their countries.A: Directions: Listen to the radio program and complete the summary. This news report is about Salehi’s and the Iranian government’s attitude towards nuclear case.B: Directions: Listen to the program again and complete the following sentences.Iranian Nuclear energy Chief1.The so-called Group of five-plus-one are not likely to agree with Salehi about theclosure of Tehran’s nuclear file.2.U.S. president Barak Obama warned Tehran that the world is giving it untilSeptember to comply with U.N. resolutions over its controversial nuclear program during the G-8 summit in Italy.3.Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Motaki said one week ago that Tehran waspreparing to present a "new package" of proposals, concerning what he called "international, security and political issues," to the West for talks.Part 2 PassageGlobalization1)The World Trade Organization is among the most powerful, and one of the mostsecretive international bodies on earth.2)Globalization is not a phenomenon. It is not just some passing trend.3)Used properly, fire can cook food, sterilize equipment, form iron, and heat ourhomes. Used carelessly, it can destroy lives, towns and forests in an instant.4)Globalization has dangers and an ugly dark side. But it can also bring tremendousopportunities and benefits.5)They will see globalization not as something to worship or demonize. Instead, theywill see it as something to mold, shape and manage for the betterment of everyone.Globalization is the present worldwide drive toward a globalized economic system dominated by supranational* corporate trade and banking institutions that are not accountable to democratic processes or national governments. The World Trade Organization (WTO) is among the most powerful, and one of the most secretive international bodies on earth. It is rapidly assuming the role of global government, as 134 nation-states, including the US, have ceded* to its vast authority and powers. The WTO represents the rules-based regime of the policy of economic globalization. The central operating principle of the WTO is that commercial interests should supersede* all others. Any obstacles in the path of operations and expansion of global business enterprise must be subordinated. In practice these "obstacles" are usually policies or democratic processes that act on behalf of working people, labor rights, environmental protection, human rights, consumer rights, social justice, local culture, and national sovereignty.Globalization is not a phenomenon. It is not just some passing trend. Today it isan overarching international system shaping the domestic politics and foreign relations of virtually every country, and we need to understand it as such.As thoughtful people concerned about world affairs, our job is to pick up "globalization", examine it from all sides, dissect* it, figure out what makes it tick, and then nurture and promote the good parts and mitigate* or slow down the bad parts. Globalization is much like fire.Fire itself is neither good nor bad. Used properly, it can cook food, sterilize equipment, form iron, and heat our homes. Used carelessly, fire can destroy lives, towns and forests in an instant. As Friedman* says:"Globalization can be incredibly empowering and incredibly coercive*. It can democratize opportunity and democratize panic. It makes the whales bigger and the minnows* stronger. It leaves you behind faster and faster, and it catches up to you faster and faster. While it is homogenizing* cultures, it is also enabling people to share their unique individuality farther and wider."Globalization has dangers and an ugly dark side. But it can also bring tremendous opportunities and benefits. Just as capitalism requires a network of governing systems to keep it from devouring societies, globalization requires vigilance and the rule of law.Antitrust laws, the Securities and Exchange Commission, labor unions, charities, the Federal Trade Commission, and countless other agencies and organizations keep American capitalism in check. Similar transparent mechanisms are needed to make sure globalization is a positive force in the world.Globalization will always have cheerleaders who are blind to the destruction globalization can cause. And it will always have strident* opponents blind to the way globalization gives some people their first opportunity to fulfill basic aspirations. As with most issues, the majority of people will be in the middle. They will see globalization not as something to worship or demonize. Instead, they will see it as something to mold, shape and manage for the betterment of everyone.Exercise D After-listening DiscussionDirections: Listen to the passage again and discuss the following questions.1. Milton Friedman says, "Globalization can be incredibly empowering and incredibly coercive. It can democratize opportunity and democratize panic. It makes the whales bigger and the minnows stronger. It leaves you behind faster and faster, and it catches up to you faster and faster. While it is homogenizing cultures, it is also enabling people to share their unique individuality farther and wider."[此文档可自行编辑修改,如有侵权请告知删除,感谢您的支持,我们会努力把内容做得更好]。

This title produced an extraordinary sequence of mental images. Vivid memories came flooding back of a night in Belleville when all of us were seated around the supper table — Uncle Allen, my mother, Uncle Charlie, Doris, Uncle Hal — and Aunt Pat served spaghetti for supper. Spaghetti was still a little known foreign dish in those days. Neither Doris nor I had ever eaten spaghetti, and none of the adults had enough experience to be good at it. All the good humor of Uncle Allen's house reawoke in my mind as I recalled the laughing arguments we had that night about the socially respectable method for moving spaghetti from plate to mouth. Suddenly I wanted to write about that, about the warmth and good feeling of it, but I wanted to put it down simply for my own joy, not for Mr. Fleagle. It was a moment I wanted to recapture and hold for myself. I wanted to relive the pleasure of that evening. To write it as I wanted, however, would violate all the rules of formal composition I'd learned in school, and Mr. Fleagle would surely give it a failing grade. Never mind. I would write something else for Mr. Fleagle after I had written this thing for myself. When I finished it the night was half gone and there was no time left to compose a proper, respectable essay for Mr. Fleagle. There was no choice next morning but to turn in my tale of the Belleville supper. Two days passed before Mr. Fleagle returned the graded papers, and he returned everyone's but mine. I was preparing myself for a command to report to Mr. Fleagle immediately after school for discipline when I saw him lift my paper from his desk and knock for the class's attention.

"Certain winds will make men's (3) temper bad", said George Eliot. In Southern California, the Santa Ana is (4) associated with an increase in depression and domestic (5) violence.Scientists have tried (6) without success to identify physiological reasons for these (7) reactions. The act oftaking wind into our lungs is what (18) gives us life. The Jews, Arabs, Romans and Greeks all took their word for (19) spiritfrom the word for wind. But our day-to-day lives are no longer (20 blown on the winds. We do not identify wind with spirit anymore.Part 2 Listening for GistA cat got on to a Scandinavian Airlines plane in Nairobi yesterday and cost the company about £10,000. The topic sentence is "A cat got on to a Scandinavian Airlines plane in Nairobi yesterday and cost the company about£10.000."Section TwoListening ComprehensionPart 1 DialogueWhat a Coincidence!Storyteller: Talking of coincidences, did I tell you about what happened to me and Jeannie last holidayFriend(s): No.Storyteller: We went on holiday in the States and we went to Mexico. Well, we were driving down to Mexico City. We weregoing to spend a few days in Palm Beach ... see the sea, lookup an old friend, you know. As we left there we stopped at a garage for a car check ... oil, the water, the tires, allthat ... petrol. And the mechanics spotted something. They said that our fuel pump was not working properly and it was quite serious ... it would cost a lot of money ... well, we were very worried.Friend(s): Were you insuredStoryteller: Well, no, we weren't and I didn't have that much money on me, you know. It was meant to be a cheap holiday. Well, just then, two men drove up and they said what's the problem And, do you know They were mechanics - it was such good luck. They looked at our car and they said, "There's nothing wrongwith your car. Don't spend money on it. Just forget about it."Well, naturally, we were worried, but ... er, I thought ...I'll trust them, I think they're right. So, we drove on, we crossed the Mexican border and had a marvelous few days sightseeing there round Monterey.Friend(s):Oh, oh, brilliant ... jealous ...Storyteller: And then we went on and on to Mexico City. We drove about forty kilometers and then we saw a car with the same US number plates as the other car we'd seen in Palm Beach. Friend(s): You're joking!Storyteller: It was parked by the road, and the same two men who gave us the advice about our car were stuck with their car. Friend(s): Oh, no!Storyteller: So, we stopped and asked them what was wrong. And do you know Their car had broken down for exactly the same reason: The fuel pump wasn't working! It was quite extraordinary.ExerciseDirections: Listen to the dialogue and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F)l. It guides how employees think, act, andfeel. Corporate culture is a broad term(广义的术语) used to define the unique personality or character of a particular company or organization, and includes such elements as core values and beliefs, corporate ethics(企业伦理,公司道德), and rules of behavior. Corporate culture can be expressed in the company's mission statement(宗旨)and other communications, in the architectural style or interior decoration of offices, by what people wear to work, by how people address each other, and in the titles given to various employees. How does a company's culture affect you In many, many ways. For instance:The hours you work per day, per week, including optionssuch as flextime and telecommuting. The work environment, including how employees interact, the degree of competition, and whether it's a fun orhostile environment - or something in-between.The dress code, including the accepted styles of attire*and things such as casual days. The office space you get, including things such ascubicles*, window offices, and rules regarding display ofpersonal items. The training and skills development you receive, which youneed both on the job and to keep yourself marketable forfuture jobs and employers.Onsite perks(特别的待遇), such as break rooms, gyms andplay rooms, daycare facilities, and more. The amount of time outside the office you're expected to spend with co-workers.Interaction with other employees, including managers and top management. How do you uncover the corporate culture of a potential employer The truth is that you will never really know the corporate culture until you have worked at the company for a number of months, but you can get close to it through research and observation. Understanding culture is a two-step process, starting with research before the interview and ending with observation at the interview. If you get a chance to meet with other employees, you canask some questions to try and get a handle on an organization's corporate culture. Such as:What's it really like to work here? What skills and characteristics does the company valueHow do people get promoted around hereThe bottom line is that you are going to spend a lot oftime in the work environment ---and to be happy, successful and productive, you’ll want to be in a placewhere you fit the culture, a place where you can have avoice, be respect and have opportunity for growth.A:Pre-listening QuestionMany articles and books have been written in recent years about culture in organizations, usually referred to as "Corporate Culture". My mother used to sit by my side, and explain each paragraph of each school reading assignment to me because I didn't understand what I was reading. She would have to read each paragraph to me. And then after each paragraph, she told me the general meaning of what we just read.In class, I tried to hide the fact that I couldn't read. My teachers gave us the last ten minutes of class to start our reading homework, and I would sit there for ten minutes staring at the page, pretending I was reading it. I remember a terrible feeling of not wanting to get into trouble for not being able to understand. I had to wait until I got home so my mother could explain it to me. How did I ever get into Cornell University?By the 8th grade I started understanding a little on my own, but I was reading at a very slow speed. I got hold of all the speed-reading books I could get my hands on. I read them all very slowly at the time. I even went out and took a course on speed-reading. Then I developed my own way which was easier and produced quicker results. I started practicing these techniques every day, and as I started to read faster, my understanding increased. I found that I stopped daydreaming and thinking about other things while I was reading, and started getting the larger meaning. I was reading faster and comprehending better.I found that when you read slowly, word-by-word, you get lost in the words, lose the bigger picture, and your comprehension drops. When you read faster, your comprehension goes up because instead of getting lost in the words, you see the general picture.26. 大一听力教材Dictation部分(1)

大一听力教材Dictation部分(1)

大一听力教材Dictation部分(1)Unit1Social customs and ways of behaving change. But they do not necessarily always change for the better. Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered impolite behaviour for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in the room. The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable—especially if they are your guests. There is a story about a rich nobleman who had a very formal dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. Other guests were amused or shocked, but the nobleman calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.Unit2Undoubtedly, Tibet is one of the harshest places for human existence. It is cool in summer but freezing cold in w inter. In Lhasa, the mildest city in Tibet, temperatures may exceed 29 degrees Celsius in summer while plummeting to -16 degrees Celsius in winter! Sun radiation is extremely strong in Tibet. The sunlight in Lhasa is so intense that the city is called Sunl ight City. The thin air can neither block off nor retain heat so that there are great temperature extremes on the same day! The average temperature in northern Tibet is subzero and winter arrives in October until the following May or June. July and August are thebest time to visit the area, enjoying warm temperatures, intense sunshine, beautiful scenery and festive events. May, June and September represent the tourist season in east Tibet. In winter, roads are all blocked by heavy snow. Landslides and rock falls frequently occur, which will make travel difficult.Unit3I could hear the guard blowing his whistle, so I ran on to the platform and up to the train. Luckily, someone saw me coming, a door opened, and I jumped on while the train was moving out of the s tation. “Phew!” I thought. “That was hard work!” I was sure the other passengers could hear my heart beating; it was so loud, and I was in a cold sweat. After a while, I recovered, and had a look at the other passenger. The compartment was full, but I was the only one standing. The people in the carriage turned their eyes away as they noticed me looking at them. All except one, a beautiful woman sitting in the corner. I saw her watchingme in the mirror. Automatically, I adjusted my tie. She had seen me running for the train: maybe this was my lucky day after all. I prepared to say hello. She spoke first, however. “Would you like my seat?” she asked.“Y ou look rather ill.” That was the day on which I realized I was getting middle-aged.Unit4Aesop was a very clever man who lived in Greece thousands of years ago. He wrote many good fables. He was known to be fond of jokes. One day, as he was enjoying a walk, he met a traveler, who greeted him and said, “Kind man, can you tell me how soon I shall get to town?”“Go,” Aesop answered.“I know I must go,” said the traveler, “but I should like you to tell me how soon I shall get to town.”“Go,” Aesop said again angrily.“This man must be mad,” the traveler thought and went on.After he had gone some distance, Aes op shouted after him, “Y ouwill get to town in two hours.” The traveler turned round in astonishment. “Why didn’t you tell me that before?” he asked.“How could I have told you before?” answered Aesop. “I did not know how fast you could walk.”Unit5Americans know that higher education is the key to the growth they need to lift their country, and today that is more true than ever. Just listen to these facts. Over half the new jobs created in the last three years have been managerial and professional jobs. The new jobs require a higher level or skills.Fifteen years ago the typical worker with a college degree made 38 percent more than a worker with a high school diploma. Today that figure is 73 percent more. Two years of college means a 20 percent increase in annual earnings. People who finish two years of college earn a quarter of a million dollars more than their high school counterparts over a lifetime.Unit6I began my career during college, reporting on news stories at a Toronto radio station. The sta tio n’s program manager was also a professor who taught one of my classes. I convinced him that she needed a youth reporter because that year was International Y outh Year. After graduation, I took a job as atelevision news reporter and later, news anchor. But sports reporting was something different so I decided to try it. Figure skating was my first assignment.I had two months until my new job began. It was like waiting an entire summer for school to start. I spent those two months talking to figure skating coaches and judges. I read boring rule books I drove to therinks where the skater trained, and made notes about our conversation. I even took a lesson, which made some of the skaters laugh.Unit7Thomas Edison was often said to be the greatest genius of his age. There are only a few men in all of history who have changed the lives of other men as much as the inventor of the first useful electric light. But Edison could never be happy just because someone said he was a genius. “There is no such thing as Ge nius,” Edison said. He said that what people called genius was mostly hard work. But Edison was a dreamer as well as a worker. From his earliest days as a child he wondered about the secrets of nature. Nature, he often said, is full of secrets. He tried to understand them; then, he tried to learn what could usefully be done with them.Edison enjoyed thinking. He knew that most people would do almost anything instead of the difficult work of thinking, especially if they did not think very often. But he knew, too, that thinking could give men enjoyment and pleasure.Unit8The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says hunger kills millions of people each year—especially children. The UN organization says millions more people will die unless more money is invested to fight against hunger. This is based on the results of a new UN study called “The State of Food Insecurity in the World, 2002”. It found that more than nine million people die each year from huger. Six million of them are children younger than age five. Researchers also found that the number of starving people is growing in some parts of the world. The report says that about eight hundred and forty million people around the world are not getting enough food to eat. Ninety-five percent of these people are in developing countries.Unit9In contemporary English, there are many reported differences in the talk of males and females. In same gender pairs having conversations, women generally discuss their personal feelings more than men. Men appear to prefer non-personal topics such as sport and news. Men tend to respond to an expression of feeling or problems by giving advice or solutions, while women are more likely to mention personal experiences that match or connect with the other woman’s. The re is a pattern documented in the American English social context of women cooperating and seeking connection via language, whereas men are more competitive and concerned with power via language. In mixed-gender pairs having conversations, the rate of men interrupting women is substantially greater than the reverse. Women are reported to use more expressions associated with tentativeness, such as “hedges” (sort of; kindof) and “tags” (isn’t it? don’t you?), when expressing an opinion: Well, erm, I think th at golf in kind if boring, don’t you?Unit10The University of Oxford, situated in the city of Oxford, England, is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. The universities of Oxford and Cambridge are sometimes referred to collectively as Oxbridge. The two universities have a long history of competition with each other and they are the two oldest and most famous universities in England. The date of Oxford’s foundation is unknown, and indeed it may not have been a single event, but there is evidence of teaching there as early as 1096. When Henry II of England forbade English students to study at the University of Paris in 1167, Oxford began to grow very quickly. The foundation of the first halls of residence, which later became colleges, dates from the period and later. Following the murder of two student accused of rape in 1209, the University was disbanded, and this led to the foundation of the University of Cambridge. In 1214, the University returned to Oxford with a charter, and the Universi ty’s status was formally confirmed.。
