The Network Interface Framework (NIF) is an object-oriented software architecture for providing networking services in the Choices object-oriented operating system. The NIF supports multiple client subsystems, provides clients with low-latency noti cation of received packets, and imposes no particular structure on clients. By contrast, traditional BSD UNIX-style networking does not meet the last two requirements, since it forces clients to use software interrupts and queueing. BSD UNIX cannot accomodate a process-based protocol subsystem such as the x -Kernel, whereas the NIF can. We have ported the x Kernel to Choices by embedding it into the NIF. Using the standard x -Kernel protocol stack with NIF yields Ethernet performance comparable to BSD networking. The NIF is also exible enough to support services that cannot easily be supported by traditional BSD, such as quality-of-service for multimedia. Preliminary performance results for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks show that the NIF can be used to minimize jitter for continuous media data streams in the presence of non-realtime streams. A Smart Account is a central data repository that provides visibility and access control to all the Cisco software licenses and entitlements across an organization. Smart Accounts allow customers to store, manage, and move assets across locations and devices and begin to use them immediately. Smart Accounts are required for enabling Cisco Smart Software Licensing.After a Smart Account has been set up, customers have the flexibility to create subaccounts (virtual accounts) to help manage licenses for departments, areas, or locations within their organization. Licenses can be pooled within virtual accounts as needed. Smart Accounts support role-based user access controls, which allow the delegation of authority to account administrators at the Smart Account level or at the virtual account level. In addition, customers can assign partner visibility and management rights to their virtual or enterprise-level accounts.Introduction to Smart LicensingCisco Smart Licensing is a flexible licensing model that provides you with an easier, faster, and more consistent way to purchase and manage software across the Cisco portfolio and across your organization. After Smart Licensing technology (available later) is enabled on the switch, the ordering process will include a requirement to establish a Smart Account where software licenses will be deposited. Smart Licenses are transferable between the same types of devices (for example, from one Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series switches to another). (See Figure 2.)Figure 1.Deploying Smart LicensesIn the deployment model shown in Figure 2, the Smart Account Cisco back end and Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series switches do not have a communication channel to report usage and consumption. They operate as separate entities. The switches must be configured in RTU mode with correct license level to enable the purchased feature set.●Possible deployment modes:◦RTU: The licensing mode on Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series switches remains RTU in Cisco IOS XE16.5.1a. However, the licensing structure in RTU has been modified to match the same packagingmodel that will be used with Smart License mode in the future. Unified licensing modes between RTU and Smart License mode will help to simplify the migration and reduce the time for implementingSmart License with usage report●Consumption reporting: License usage and consumption reporting is performed on Cisco SmartSoftware Manager only when the device has capability to report Smart License usage. Cisco IOS XE16.5.1a release does not include the license reporting infrastructure to Cisco Smart Software Manageron the switchesFor further information about the Cisco Catalyst 9000 RTU licensing, model, see the Configuration Guide. Software-Defined Access (SD-Access)Software-Defined Access (SD-Access) enables Policy-based Automation from edge to Cloud with foundational capabilities leveraging controller-based architecture including: Design with Validated Design Templates, Simplified device deployment, Unified management of Wired and Wireless, Network Virtualization with Segmentation, Group Based Policies and Contextual based analytics.SD-Access can be enabled with Cisco DNA Advantage. Building Programmable Automation Controllers with LabVIEWFPGAOverviewProgrammable Automation Controllers (PACs) are gaining acceptance within the industrial control market as the ideal solution for applications that require highly integrated analog and digital I/O, floating-point processing, and seamless connectivity to multiple processing nodes. National Instruments offers a variety of PAC solutions powered by one common software development environment, NI LabVIEW. With LabVIEW, you can build custom I/O interfaces for industrial applications using add-on software, such as the NI LabVIEW FPGA Module.With the LabVIEW FPGA Module and reconfigurable I/O (RIO) hardware, National Instruments delivers an intuitive, accessible solution for incorporating the flexibility and customizability of FPGA technology into industrial PAC systems. You can define the logic embedded in FPGA chips across the family of RIO hardware targets without knowinglow-level hardware description languages (HDLs) or board-level hardware design details, as well as quickly define hardware for ultrahigh-speed control, customized timing and synchronization, low-level signal processing, and custom I/O with analog, digital, and counters within a single device. RIO technology, the merging of LabVIEW graphical programming with FPGAs on NI RIO hardware, provides a flexible platform for creating sophisticated measurement and control systems that you could previously create only with custom-designed hardware.An FPGA is a chip that consists of many unconfigured logic gates. Unlike the fixed, vendor-defined functionality of an ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) chip, you can configure and reconfigure the logic on FPGAs for your specific application. FPGAs are used in applications where either the cost of developing and fabricating an ASIC is prohibitive, or the hardware must be reconfigured after being placed into service. The flexible,software-programmable architecture of FPGAs offer benefits such as high-performance execution of custom algorithms, precise timing and synchronization, rapid decision making, and simultaneous execution of parallel tasks. Today, FPGAs appear in such devices as instruments, consumer electronics, automobiles, aircraft, copy machines, andapplication-specific computer hardware. While FPGAs are often used in industrial control products, FPGA functionality has not previously been made accessible to industrial control engineers. Defining FPGAs has historically required expertise using HDL programming or complex design tools used more by hardware design engineers than by control engineers.With the LabVIEW FPGA Module and NI RIO hardware, you now can use LabVIEW, a high-level graphical development environment designed specifically for measurement and control applications, to create PACs that have the customization, flexibility, andhigh-performance of FPGAs. Because the LabVIEW FPGA Module configures custom circuitry in hardware, your system can process and generate synchronized analog and digital signals rapidly and deterministically. Figure 1 illustrates many of the NI RIO devices that you can configure using the LabVIEW FPGA Module.Figure 1. LabVIEW FPGA VI Block Diagram and RIO Hardware PlatformsNI RIO Hardware for PACsHistorically, programming FPGAs has been limited to engineers who have in-depth knowledge of VHDL or other low-level design tools, which require overcoming a very steep learning curve. With the LabVIEW FPGA Module, NI has opened FPGA technology to a broader set of engineers who can now define FPGA logic using LabVIEW graphical development. Measurement and control engineers can focus primarily on their test and control application, where their expertise lies, rather than the low-level semantics of transferring logic into the cells of the chip. The LabVIEW FPGA Module model works because of the tightintegration between the LabVIEW FPGA Module and the commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware architecture of the FPGA and surrounding I/O components.National Instruments PACs provide modular, off-the-shelf platforms for your industrial control applications. With the implementation of RIO technology on PCI, PXI, and Compact Vision System platforms and the introduction of RIO-based CompactRIO, engineers now have the benefits of a COTS platform with the high-performance, flexibility, and customization benefits of FPGAs at their disposal to build PACs. National Instruments PCI and PXI R Series plug-in devices provide analog and digital data acquisition and control for high-performance, user-configurable timing and synchronization, as well as onboard decision making on a single device. Using these off-the-shelf devices, you can extend your NI PXI or PCI industrial control system to include high-speed discrete and analog control, custom sensor interfaces, and precise timing and control.NI CompactRIO, a platform centered on RIO technology, provides a small, industrially rugged, modular PAC platform that gives you high-performance I/O and unprecedented flexibility in system timing. You can use NI CompactRIO to build an embedded system for applications such as in-vehicle data acquisition, mobile NVH testing, and embedded machine control systems. The rugged NI CompactRIO system is industrially rated and certified, and it is designed for greater than 50 g of shock at a temperature range of -40 to 70 °C.NI Compact Vision System is a rugged machine vision package that withstands the harsh environments common in robotics, automated test, and industrial inspection systems. NICVS-145x devices offer unprecedented I/O capabilities and network connectivity for distributed machine vision applications.NI CVS-145x systems use IEEE 1394 (FireWire) technology, compatible with more than 40 cameras with a wide range of functionality, performance, and price. NI CVS-1455 and NI CVS-1456 devices contain configurable FPGAs so you can implement custom counters, timing, or motor control in your machine vision application.Building PACs with LabVIEW and the LabVIEW FPGA Module With LabVIEW and the LabVIEW FPGA Module, you add significant flexibility and customization to your industrial control hardware. Because many PACs are already programmed using LabVIEW, programming FPGAs with LabVIEW is easy because it uses the same LabVIEW development environment. When you target the FPGA on an NI RIO device, LabVIEW displays only the functions that can be implemented in the FPGA, further easing the use of LabVIEW to program FPGAs. The LabVIEW FPGA Module Functions palette includes typical LabVIEW structures and functions, such as While Loops, For Loops, Case Structures, and Sequence Structures as well as a dedicated set of LabVIEWFPGA-specific functions for math, signal generation and analysis, linear and nonlinear control, comparison logic, array and cluster manipulation, occurrences, analog and digital I/O, and timing. You can use a combination of these functions to define logic and embed intelligence onto your NI RIO device.Figure 2 shows an FPGA application that implements a PID control algorithm on the NI RIO hardware and a host application on a Windows machine or an RT target that communicates with the NI RIO hardware. This application reads from analog input 0 (AI0), performs the PID calculation, and outputs the resulting data on analog output 0 (AO0). While the FPGA clock runs at 40 MHz the loop in this example runs much slower because each component takes longer than one-clock cycle to execute. Analog control loops can run on an FPGA at a rate of about 200 kHz. You can specify the clock rate at compile time. This example shows only one PID loop; however, creating additional functionality on the NI RIO device is merely a matter of adding another While Loop. Unlike traditional PC processors, FPGAs are parallel processors. Adding additional loops to your application does not affect the performance of your PID loop.Figure 2. PID Control Using an Embedded LabVIEW FPGA VI with Corresponding LabVIEW HostVI.FPGA Development FlowAfter you create the LabVIEW FPGA VI, you compile the code to run on the NI RIO hardware. Depending on the complexity of your code and the specifications of your development system, compile time for an FPGA VI can range from minutes to several hours.To maximize development productivity, with the R Series RIO devices you can use abit-accurate emulation mode so you can verify the logic of your design before initiating the compile process. When you target the FPGA Device Emulator, LabVIEW accesses I/O from the device and executes the VI logic on the Windows development computer. In this mode, you can use the same debugging tools available in LabVIEW for Windows, such as execution highlighting, probes, and breakpoints.Once the LabVIEW FPGA code is compiled, you create a LabVIEW host VI to integrate your NI RIO hardware into the rest of your PAC system. Figure 3 illustrates the development process for creating an FPGA application. The host VI uses controls and indicators on the FPGA VI front panel to transfer data between the FPGA on the RIO device and the host processing engine. These front panel objects are represented as data registers within the FPGA. The host computer can be either a PC or PXI controller running Windows or a PC, PXI controller, Compact Vision System, or CompactRIO controller running a real-time operating system (RTOS). In the above example, we exchange the set point, PID gains, loop rate, AI0, and AO0 data with the LabVIEW host VI.Figure 3. LabVIEW FPGA Development FlowThe NI RIO device driver includes a set of functions to develop a communication interface to the FPGA. The first step in building a host VI is to open a reference to the FPGA VI and RIO device. The Open FPGA VI Reference function, as seen in Figure 2, also downloads and runs the compiled FPGA code during execution. After opening the reference, you read and write to the control and indicator registers on the FPGA using the Read/Write Control function. Once you wire the FPGA reference into this function, you can simply select which controls and indicators you want to read and write to. You can enclose the FPGA Read/Write function within a While Loop to continuously read and write to the FPGA. Finally, the last function within the LabVIEW host VI in Figure 2 is the Close FPGA VI Reference function. The Close FPGA VI Reference function stops the FPGA VI and closes the reference to the device. Now you can download other compiled FPGA VIs to the device to change or modify its functionality.The LabVIEW host VI can also be used to perform floating-point calculations, data logging, networking, and any calculations that do not fit within the FPGA fabric. For added determinism and reliability, you can run your host application on an RTOS with the LabVIEW Real-Time Module. LabVIEW Real-Time systems provide deterministicprocessing engines for functions performed synchronously or asynchronously to the FPGA. For example, floating-point arithmetic, including FFTs, PID calculations, and custom control algorithms, are often performed in the LabVIEW Real-Time environment. Relevant data can be stored on a LabVIEW Real-Time system or transferred to a Windows host computer for off-line analysis, data logging, or user interface displays. The architecture for this configuration is shown in Figure 4. Each NI PAC platform that offers RIO hardware can run LabVIEW Real-Time VIs.Figure 4. Complete PAC Architecture Using LabVIEW FPGA, LabVIEW Real-Time and Host PC Within each R Series and CompactRIO device, there is flash memory available to store a compiled LabVIEW FPGA VI and run the application immediately upon power up of the device. In this configuration, as long as the FPGA has power, it runs the FPGA VI, even if the host computer crashes or is powered down. This is ideal for programming safety power down and power up sequences when unexpected events occur.Using NI SoftMotion to Create Custom Motion ControllersThe NI SoftMotion Development Module for LabVIEW provides VIs and functions to help you build custom motion controllers as part of NI PAC hardware platforms that can include NI RIO devices, DAQ devices, and Compact FieldPoint. NI SoftMotion provides all of the functions that typically reside on a motion controller DSP. With it, you can handle path planning, trajectory generation, and position and velocity loop control in the NI LabVIEW environment and then deploy the code on LabVIEW Real-Time or LabVIEW FPGA-based target hardware.NI SoftMotion includes functions for trajectory generator and spline engine and examples with complete source code for supervisory control, position, and velocity control loop using the PID algorithm. Supervisory control and the trajectory generator run on a LabVIEW Real-Time target and run at millisecond loop rates. The spline engine and the control loop can run either on a LabVIEW Real-Time target at millisecond loop rates or on a LabVIEW FPGA target at microsecond loop rates.ApplicationsBecause the LabVIEW FPGA Module can configure low-level hardware design of FPGAs and use the FPGAs within in a modular system, it is ideal for industrial controlapplications requiring custom hardware. These custom applications can include a custom mix of analog, digital, and counter/timer I/O, analog control up to 125 kHz, digital control up to 20 MHz, and interfacing to custom digital protocols for the following:•Batch control•Discrete control•Motion control•In-vehicle data acquisition•Machine condition monitoring•Rapid control prototyping (RCP)•Industrial control and acquisition•Distributed data acquisition and control•Mobile/portable noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) analysis ConclusionThe LabVIEW FPGA Module brings the flexibility, performance, and customization of FPGAs to PAC platforms. It would be impossible to identify a particular piece of hardware which performed the counting in a microprocessor based clock because the time would be stored in the memory and incremented at regular intervals but the microprocessor. However, the software which defined the system‟s behavior would contain sections that performed as counters. The apparently rather abstract approach to the architecture of the microprocessor and its associated circuits allows it to be very flexible in use, since the system is defined almost entirely software. The design process is largely one of software engineering, and the similar problems of construction and maintenance which occur in conventional engineering are encountered when producing software.Microcomputers use RAM (Random Access Memory) into which data can be written and from which data can be read again when needed. This data can be read back from the memory in any sequence desired, and not necessarily the same order in whi ch it was written, hence the expression …random‟ access memory. The troubleshooting technique usually employed in these cases of total lock-up is based on the use of sophisticated test devices requiring the application of probes to the pins of the various integrated circuits of the microcontroller-based system under test.There are various problem associated with the use of such test devices for troubleshooting a microcontroller-based system. The probes used in these test devices are very fragile, difficult to apply because of the small size of the circuit and their close packing,and may not make good contact with the circuit.Also, because of their high cost, these test devices are not mass produced. Consequently, faulty microcontroller-based systems can not be repaired immediately, wherever they happen to be located at the time, but must first be returned to a place where a test device is available. Troubleshooting a microcontroller-based system in this way is time-consuming, irksome and costly.To avoid the need for direct action on the microcontroller-based system each time the application program executed by the microcontroller of the system is changed, it is standard practice to use a downloadable read only memory to store the application program, a loading program being written into a mask-programmed read only memory of the microcontroller, The mask-programmed read only memory of the microcontroller is integrated into the microcontroller and programmed once and for all during manufacture of the microcontroller.To change the application program the microcontroller is reset by running the downloading program. This downloading program can then communicate with a workstation connected to the microcontroller by an appropriate transmission line, this workstation the new application program to be written into the microcontroller, The downloading program receives the new application program and loads it into a readonly memory external to the microcontroller.Although this solution avoids the need for direct action on the microcontroller=based system (which would entail removing from the system the reprogrammable read only memories containing the application program, writing into these memories the new application program using an appropriate programming device and then replacing them in the system), it nevertheless has a major drawback, namely specialization of the microcontroller during manufacture.Each type of reprogrammable memory is associated with a different downloading program because the programming parameters (voltage to be applied, duration for which the voltage is to be applied) vary with the technology employed, The downloading program is written once and for all into the mask-programmed internal memory of the microcontroller and the latter is therefore restricted to using memory components of the type for which this downloading program was written. Video sensor networks (VSNs) has become the recent research focus due to the rich information it provides to address various data-hungry applications. However, VSNimplementations face stringent constraints of limited communication bandwidth, processing capability, and power supply. In-network processing has been proposed as efficient means toaddress these problems. The key component of in-network processing, task mapping and scheduling problem, is investigated in this paper. Although task mapping and scheduling in wired networks of processors has been extensively studied, their application to VSNs remains largely unexplored. Existing algorithms cannot be directly implemented in VSNs due to limited resource availability and shared wireless communication medium. In this work, an application-independent task mapping and scheduling solution in multi-hop VSNs is presented that provides real-time guarantees to process video feeds. The processed data is smaller in volume which further releases the burden on the end-to-end communication. Using a novel multi-hop channel model and a communication scheduling algorithm, computation tasks and associated communication events are scheduled simultaneously with a dynamic critical-path scheduling algorithm. Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) mechanism isimplemented to further optimize energy consumption. According to the simulation results, the proposed solution outperforms existing mechanisms in terms of guaranteeing application deadlines with minimum energy consumption.Article Outline1. The data layer is designed as a distributed storage system that can store data in multiple copies to ensure data security and high availability. The data layer uses a NoSQL database tostore and manage personnel information.System workflowThe workflow of the human resources management sub-system is shown in Fig 2. The system workflow covers the main functions of the sub-system, which includes personnel information management, employment and separation management, payroll processing, and employee performance management.Fig 2. The system collects and stores personnel information, including personal basic information, unit and department information, job information, and education and training information. The system stores employment and separation records in the database and automatically updates personnel information.3. Payroll processing. The system automaticallycalculates and generates employees' salaries based on theirjob and personal information. The system uses a distributed service to calculate salaries and generates related records.4. Employee performance management. The systemcalculates and manages employee performance information, including goal setting, performance appraisal, andperformance feedback. The system generates performancerecords and reports based on the evaluation results.Experimental resultsTo evaluate the proposed solution, we conducted experiments on a cloud computing platform. The experimental environment is set up on the OpenStack platform. The experimental objects include the performance of the system,the scalability of the system, and the security of the system.PerformanceWe conducted stress tests on the human resources management sub-system to assess system performance. Thestress test was carried out with 50, 100, and 200 concurrent user requests. The average response time and throughput ofthe system are shown in Fig 3.Fig 3. Performance test results of the systemAs shown in Fig 3, the average response time of the system was about 0.02s, which means that the human resources management sub-system responds quickly to user requests. The throughput of the system was improved with the increase ofthe concurrent requests, indicating that the system has good scalability.ScalabilityWe tested the scalability of the human resources management sub-system when processing a large amount of data. We tested the system with 10,000, 100,000, and 1,000,000 personnel information records. The system responded correctly and rapidly to the query requests, and there was nosignificant system performance degradation observed.SecurityWe tested the security of the human resources management sub-system by conducting penetration testing. We tested the system for common vulnerabilities, such as SQL injection and XSS attacks. The proposed solution of the human resources management sub-system passed the penetration test andachieved good security.ConclusionThis paper proposed a solution for the design and implementation of the human resources management sub-systemin the collaborative office system based on cloud computing. The human resources management sub-system plays a crucialrole in the collaborative office system, and needs to provide efficient and accurate personnel information management, automated employment and separation management, accurate payroll processing, and automatic calculation and managementof employee performance information. The solution adopts a multi-layer architecture, which uses virtualization,distributed computing, and storage technologies to achievehigh performance and reliability. The experimental results show that the proposed solution achieves good performance and provides high scalability and security. This system implements control functions through software executing in real time on one or more digital computers. The software is organized into a hierarchy that allows new control functions needed to support the DIII–D experimental program to be added easily without affecting previously implemented functions. This also allows the software to be portable in order to create control systems for other applications. The tokamak operator uses an X-windows based interface to specify the time evolution of a tokamak discharge. The interface provides a high level view for the operator that reduces the need for detailed knowledge of the control sys-tem operation. There is provision for an asynchronous change to an alternate discharge time evolution in response to an event that is detected in real time. Quality control is enhanced through off-line testing that can make use of software-based tokamak simulators.INTRODUCTIONActive control of discharge parameters is playing an increas-ingly important role in present-day tokamak experiments and is expected to be a key design feature in future experiments such as TPX and ITER. For example, precise control of the discharge shape and position is required because of the effect on a wide range of parameters such as impurity influx through wall contact, coupling of auxiliary heating power, magnetohydrodynamic stability, confinement, edge localized mode (ELM) characteristics, and H–mode power threshold. Radiative divertor designs require precise control of the posi-tion of the X-point, the divertor strike points and/or the diver-tor radiation level. Advanced tokamak applications require control of the current density profile.This paper describes the software architecture of the dis-charge control system in use on the DIII–D tokamak experi-ment [1-4]. This system implements control functions through software executing in real time on one or more digi-tal computers. Because control applications are implemented in software there is little restriction on the discharge parame-ters that can be controlled and the type of control algorithm that can be implemented. The flexibility to make the fre-quent control application changes required to support the DIII–D experimental program is provided by organizing the software so that new control functions can be added easily without affecting previously implemented functions. The tokamak operator also has flexibility in the specification of the time evolution of the tokamak discharge including the capability to provide for an asynchronous change to an alter-nate discharge time evolution in response to an event that is detected in real time. The operator uses an X-windows based interface that provides a high level view that reduces the need for detailed knowledge of the control system operation. Software quality control is enhanced through off-line testing that can make use of software-based tokamak simulators.MODEL FOR THE SYSTEM OPERATIONThe task of the plasma control system is to send the com-mands to the various tokamak systems, or ``actuators'' (e.g. magnetic field coil power supplies, gas valves, plasma heat-ing sources etc.), that are required to produce the discharge desired by the operator. Sometimes this involves simply providing to the actuators a predetermined sequence of con-trol commands but, more often, this involves performing some sort of feedback control.Feedback control is implemented by repeatedly executing a simple cycle through the entire discharge period. This cycle consists of these steps: (i) measurements are made of various tokamak diagnostic signals, (ii) the value of some quantity to be controlled is calculated from the diagnostic data, (iii) the calculated value is compared to a desired value and (iv) the required commands to the actuators to correct any difference between the actual and desired values are calculated and communicated to the actuators. The complexity of the calculations that are performed to execute one control cycle determines how rapidly the cycle can be executed and the frequency bandwidth of the commands sent to the actuators. The basic model for the control system software is that the device being controlled runs in pulses, with the capability for the pulse length to be essentially indefinite. The software synchronizes with the start of the tokamak pulse and provides the capability for the operator to specify the way in which the various control system parameters should evolve as a func-tion of time after the pulse begins. One or more computers are dedicated to executing the code that performs the control functions. During the tokamak pulse, these real time com-puters execute without operator intervention. The operator specifies, before the pulse, all of the data that is required to run the complete pulse. The amount and type of data required depend on the sophistication of the control algo-rithms. These data are loaded into the memory of the real time systems during pre-pulse preparation and are referenced by the control algorithms during the pulse.HIGH LEVEL OVERVIEWThe control system is organized with distinct tasks dis-tributed among multiple processes. Fig. 1 shows a block diagram of these processes and the communication paths*Work supported by the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract No. DE-AC03-89ER51114.between them. There can be multiple real time computers, executing control applications in parallel. Each of the real time computers is paired with a process executing on a host computer that handles communication with the remainder of the system, communicating with the real time computer through shared memory. During a discharge, each of the real time computers runs a single program, consuming the entire computation bandwidth, that implements the feedback cycle. Apart from the real time code, the control system processes execute on a host computer. Communication between the processes is by message passing using the standard Berkeley socket mechanism provided by the UNIX operating system. Use of this communication method allows the system processes to be distributed among multiple computers if required. The host computers are not required to perform real time functions during the tokamak pulse.The “lockout server” provides synchronization with the tokamak discharge cycle. This server detects the moment prior to a new discharge after which no more changes in the discharge specifications can be made and the control system begins its preparation for the discharge. The lockout server coordinates the activities of the various processes during pre-pulse preparation, waits while the discharge executes, and coordinates the activities during post-pulse cleanup.The waveform server holds the database of specifications for the time evolution of the discharge. This database is divided into “raw” and “processed” data. The raw data are obtained through messages from the user interface and consist of spec-ifications in terms and units that are familiar to the operator. The processed data are computed by combining the raw data from the operator with any necessary additional precomputed data loaded from disk files, in a manner specified by the con-trol algorithm designer, to produce the data the real time computer requires to execute the discharge. This separation of the raw and processed data using a computation that can be unique to a particular control function allows details of the control implementation to be hidden, providing the operator with a more friendly interface.The functions of the waveform server are split into syn-chronous and asynchronous portions. Communication with the user interface is asynchronous. Whenever a request for a message exchange arrives from a user interface, this request is honored immediately. One copy of the raw data is updated during each exchange of messages. When an operator wishes to examine the current set of specifications for the discharge, the waveform server can always respond quickly by consult-ing this copy. A separate record of each message is placed on a “job queue.'“ The messages in this queue are processed sequentially with any necessary work being done to recom-pute processed data that depends on the raw data that was altered. Because this computation could be intensive it is performed in the background without requiring the operator to wait for its completion during each exchange of messages. An X-windows application provides the operator with an interface to the control system. Using an X-terminal or workstation the operator has point-and-click access to all functions necessary to specify the discharge parameters. The operator is aware only of the “control panel” presented on the X-windows display which hides the details of the process structure shown in Fig. 1. There can be multiple operators, each executing a user interface process and each accessing the same database of specifications stored by the waveform server. Access to the servers is arbitrated by the socket mechanism, with multiple requests for message exchange being queued by the operating system.The control system provides a generic construct called a “waveform” that the operator uses to specify the time evolu-tion of a discharge parameter. For instance, the desired total plasma current as a function of time would be specified using a waveform. Typical control algorithms require the operator to change relatively few parameters from one discharge to another. So, most of the operator's activity is in modifying a few waveforms for each algorithm, each of which communi-cates a single value versus time to the control system. A given algorithm may require the ability for the operator to modify data structures that do not match the generic usage of a waveform. For this purpose, the algorithm designer can design data structures unique to the algorithm and provide acustom user interface window so that the operator can modify this algorithm-specific data.ORGANIZATION OF CONTROL APPLICATIONS The number of parameters of the tokamak discharge that can be under feedback control is large. The arrows represent communication paths.evolution of the discharge parameters that is required to support an experiment can be quite complex. The operator needs a systematic way to choose among the large number of options for specifying the discharge parameters, and thecontrol application designer and programmer must be able to coordinate their control functions with many other control applications. Several levels of structure are used to help make these jobs organized and manageable.The control application designer organizes the controlled parameters into “categories,” usually determining the group-ings based on the type of actuator used. For instance, for DIII–D, discharge shape control is one category and the actu-ators for this are the power supplies for the poloidal field coils. These groupings provide an organization method to aid operator understanding of the control system and to use in storing control system data.The method used to control the discharge parameters in a given category is the “algorithm.” The choice of control algorithm determines the data required from the operator, the data provided to the real time computer and the computations performed in real time to perform the control function. For each control category the operator selects, from a list of available choices, a single algorithm to be in use at any given moment during a discharge.For each control category, the operator can specify any num-ber of “phases” of a discharge. A discharge phase is a seg-ment of time during the tokamak pulse during which a speci-fied control algorithm is in use and during which the discharge parameters controlled by that algorithm should evolve with time in a manner specified by the operator.The use of the discharge phase is illustrated in Fig. 2. The figure shows, as an example, three discharge phases for the category that controls the ohmic heating coil power supply. In phases #1 and #3 the algorithm chosen controls the power supply to produce a particular plasma current as a function of time (I p). In phase #2, the algorithm is designed to pro-duce a required loop voltage (V loop). The time evolutions of I p and V loop are programmed separately relative to time zero for the appropriate phase. Defining time relative to the start of the phase allows the segment of time in a discharge in which a given phase is in use to be easily relocatable. A phase can continue indefinitely because there is no ending point for the definition of the time evolution.For each category, the operator specifies a sequence of one or more phases to be active during the discharge. For instance, if several separate experiments are being conducted during a single discharge, the operator might create a phase for each experiment. There is a primary sequence of phases that starts at a time that is synchronous with the tokamak pulse. In the example of Fig. 2, phase #1 is chosen to start at t = 0 s during the discharge and phase #2 is selected to start at t = 2 s. One or more alternate sequences of discharge phases can also be included, any of which could become active asynchronously during a discharge in response to some event detected by a control algorithm. For instance, in Fig. 2 an event was detected at t = 4 s that required the discharge to be ended gently. A switch is made to the alternate phase sequence in which phase #3 uses an algorithm that brings the plasma current slowly to zero.SOFTWARE FOR THE REAL TIME COMPUTERS The code on the real time computers executes the feedback cycle to provide all of the tokamak control functions during a discharge. The operator’s choices of control algorithm determine the specific functions to be called and the input parameters provided for each discharge phase determine exactly how the feedback algorithms behave.A set of generic data structures on the real time computer provides the real time code with input data from the wave-form server and a place to store output data. It is also possi-ble to make use of data structures that are custom designed for a particular algorithm. The generic structures are vectors (one dimensional arrays), each element of which specifies a single, time varying parameter to the control algorithm or holds an output value computed by a control algorithm. The data structures on the real time computers can vary in size from one discharge to another with memory allocation performed for each discharge as required. A single centralstructure contains pointers to locate all other structures. To avoid software failures in real time resulting from lack of memory, all memory on the computer is allocated during the pre-pulse preparation phase. The values in the vectors that provide input parameters are fixed during a feedback cycle, but can change between cycles to provide the mechanism for input parameters that change as a time function.The “target'' vector is the primary source of input values for the real time code that implements a control algorithm. Each element of this vector contains either a floating point value or an integer value that can vary as a function of time. Typically a target vector element is the desired value of a feedback controlled parameter or a switch or some other parameter used to control how the control algorithm behaves. An integer value in the target vector can also be a pointer to an algorithm-specific data structure.The functions to be executed in real time are specified in a flexible manner rather than being fixed at compile time. The “function'' vector contains a list of pointers to the functions that execute the control algorithms chosen by the operator. To execute one feedback cycle, each of the functions in this list is called once. If the operator chooses to change the algo-rithm as a function of time during the discharge, the content of the function vector will change in time.In order to provide a way to diagnose the performance of the control system software, the input buffer for the measured diagnostic values and the output vectors are allocated as arrays of vectors. The set of vectors in use during a given feedback cycle is fixed, but at the end of each cycle the pointers to the vectors in use can be changed to new, as yet unused vectors, leaving behind the values written on the pre-vious cycle. This produces snapshots of the complete set of input and output values, all from a single feedback cycle.APPLICATION PROGRAMMINGThe control system can be completely configured for each unique installation by writing the appropriate software. The control system designer combines object code libraries con-taining the installation independent support facilities with installation specific code written in the C programming language to implement all control application functionality. Emphasis is placed on providing as much generic capability as possible as part of the support facilities in order to mini-mize the work required to implement a control application. The installation specific code is used to define the control categories, the control algorithms, the real time computer configuration and which categories and algorithms execute code on each of the real time computers.Each custom control system component is defined in a “master” file which is created to define each real time computer, each control category, and each control algorithm. The master file contains several sections of source code, each of which is automatically included in one or more of the system processes (waveform server, real time host process or real time code) when the code is compiled. Adding a new computer, category, or algorithm involves modifying only the master file for that function without disturbing the files asso-ciated with the remainder of the control system code.To add a control algorithm to the system, a master file is cre-ated that defines the way the algorithm uses elements of the real time data vectors, defines the waveforms that appear on the user interface for that algorithm, uses library routines to specify how the operator-provided raw data is converted to the processed data for the real time computer, defines the structure of any algorithm-specific data and includes the code to be executed in real time to implement the algorithm.TESTING USING THE SIMULATION SERVER Debugging control algorithm software during operation of the tokamak is expensive, risky for the tokamak hardware and inefficincy. Therefore, it is desireable to have a way to accomplish two primary debugging tasks in an off-line mode: (a) determining whether the control algorithm code imple-ments the algorithm correctly and (b) determining whether the control algorithm can properly control the relevant toka-mak parameters. The simulation server is a separate process (Fig. 1) that emulates the tokamak systems to provide this off-line debugging capability. During each feedback cycle the real time computers receive the tokamak diagnostic data from the simulation server and return to the server the com-puted actuator commands.The simulation server is customizable to match the control algorithm under test. In the simplest case the server passes the data recorded from a previously executed discharge to the real time computers so that the algorithm computation results can be checked. A more complex server simulates the tokamak's response to actuator commands to test the complete feedback control functionality of the algorithm.SUMMARYWe have described the software structure that provides the power and flexibility required for a discharge control system to support the rapidly evolving DIII–D tokamak experimental program. The separation of the basic software framework and the application-specific code allows the rapid implemen-tation of new control systems through modification of only the application code that implements the required control algorithms. For instance, at DIII–D the same software and hardware technology have been used to implement the toka-mak discharge control system and a control system for the ICRF transmitters. There is limited dependency of the soft-ware on the control system's hardware architecture allowing relatively rapid modification to take advantage of future advances in computing hardware. Experience gained with this system during operation of DIII–D advanced tokamak and radiative divertor experiments will result in a control sys-tem thoroughly tested on a operating tokamak that can be adopted directly by future experiments, reducing future development time and costs.REFERENCES[1] J.R.
