We all stared down at the floor on which was the art of a child’s handwriting in chalk. I stood there and had hoped that no one else could see it. The look on my dad’s face made me frightened. The only words that came from my mouth were, “ Not me, Dad.” The others denied(否认) it as well. Without saying a word, my father disappeared for just a minute and came back with a piece of paper and a pencil. He was so determined to find the truth! “ I want each of you to write exactly what you see on the s tep.” I was not a stupid kid, though and when my turn came, I wrote the words differently. So when my dad compared the handwriting, he still couldn’t tell which one of us did it. Frustrated, he stood a step above us and looked down at his three small kid s, saying, “ I’m going to give you one chance.” Not surprisingly, neither my brother nor my sister spoke up. “ Well, since none of you seemed to have done it, then you all get a spanking (打屁股).” What? Still, I stood there and said nothing. “ I did it,” I looked around to see my sister come forward. Huh? She did it? No, she didn’t because I did. Why was she taking the blame for something I did? I stood there, and I let it happen. That was the last time I let anyone else take the blame for me. When I think back to that day, I know I learned the value of family, of a sister who would do anything for me.8. The father was angry because _____.A. their handwriting was badB. they made the floor dirtyC. they wasted a lot of chalksD. they didn’t finish their homework9. I knew Dad would find the truth11.It can be inferred from the passage that the author _____.A. knows his father treated him strictly out of loveB. has never done anything wrong ever sinceC. will take the blame for his mistakes in futureD. knows that his father has known the truth.DIn choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair-weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠).Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener. At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favour, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a good friend!12.According to the author, the most important quality in choosing a friend is __________.A. understandingB. honestyC. reliabilityD. a sense of humour13. If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Int ernet is changing what we remember and how.In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some e xperiments. She and her research team wanted to know the I nternet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save th e information. The second group understood that the compute r would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the i nformation better. People in the first group knew they could fin d the information again, so they did not try to remember it.In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to r emember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they d o not remember the information. Rather, they remember how t o find it. This is called "transactive memory (交互记忆)" According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't me an we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there i s no doubt that the way we use memory is changing. The passage begins with two questions to ______.A.introduce the main topicB.show the author's altitudeC.describe how to use the InternetD.explain how to store information10.What can we learn about the first experiment?A.The Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer.B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.C.The first group did not try to remember the information.D.The second group did not understand the information.11.In transactive memory, people ______.A.keep the information in mindB.change the quantity of informationanize information like a computerD.remember how to find the information12.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's re search?A.We are using memory differently.B.We are becoming more intelligent.C.We have poorer memories than before.D.We need a better way to access information.DThere are an extremely large number of ants worldwide. Each individual(个体的) ant hardly weigh anything, but put together they weigh rou ghly the same as all of mankind. They also live nearly everyw here, except on frozen mountain tops and around the poles. F or animals their size, ants have been astonishingly successful , largely due to their wonderful social behavior. In colonies(群体) that range in size from a few hundred to tens of millions, they organize their lives with a clear division of labor. Even mo re amazing is how they achievethis level of organization. Whe re we use sound and sight to communicate, ants depend prim arily on pheromone(外激素), chemicals sent out by individuals and smelled or tasted b y fellow members of their colony. When an ant finds food, it pr oduces a pheromone that will lead others straight to where th e food is. When an individual ant comes under attack or is dyi ng, it sends out an alarm pheromone to warn the colony to pr epare for a conflict as a defense unit.In fact, when it comes to the art of war, ants have no equal. T hey are completely fearless and will readily take on a creature much larger than themselves, attacking in large groups and o vercoming their target. Such is their devotion to the common good of the colony that not only soldier ants but also worker a nts will sacrifice their lives to help defeat an enemy. Behaving in this selfless and devoted manner, these little crea tures have survived on Earth, for more than 140 million years, far longer than dinosaurs. Because they think as one, they ha ve a collective(集体的) intelligence greater than you would expect from itsindividu al parts.13.We can learn from the passage that ants are ______.A.not willing to share foodB.not found around the polesC.more successful than all other animalsD.too many to achieve any level of organization14.Ants can use pheromones for______.A.escapemunicationC.warning enemiesD.arranging labor15.What does the underlined expression "take on" in Paragra ph 3 mean?A.Accept.B.Employ.C.Play with.D.Fight against.二、七选五(2*5,共10分)5.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

AWhen was the last time someone did something unexpectedly nice for you? Not someone you knew, but a total stranger? It happened to me a few times, but two examples really stand out.A few years ago, I was dining out with a person who kept going on and on about himself, completely not aware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery. It wasn't his company that disappointed me. I was recovering from a broken heart, and just sitting down to dinner reminded me of my last relationship.I could have burst into tears right there at the table. When we picked up the check, the waitress said, "Your meal was already paid for." My friend and I didn't have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man coming in out of the corner of my eye.He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar, had a glass of wine, stayed for maybe ten minutes, and then left. The waitress said, "Yes, the gentleman who was in here a while ago paid for you."Just last year, I was running a half-marathon.With just 1 mile to go, I was out of gas.Runners call it "hitting the wall"; I thought I couldn't move another muscle.Out of nowhere, a teenager jogs up next to me and says, "What's your name, sweetie? Jennifer? Okay, Jennifer, let's go! Come on! It's just around the corner! You can do it!" And he ran with me until I picked up my pace.I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn't even supposed to be in the race that day. He was running in place of someone else. I still shake my head when I think of these momentary angels that came to me at my point of need.Do you have any experiences like this?21.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.The Kindness of Strangers. B.Valuable friendship.C.Two Special Experiences. D.Helping others is worthwhile.22. The underlined expression in the passage means “__________”.A. being hurt by the wallB. winning the gameC. taking a deep breathD. running out of energy23. A stranger helped the author during a half-marathon by _______.A. giving her a bottle of waterB. running with her and encouraging herC. showing her the right wayD. keeping her cool and awakeBMusic is really powerful. Without music, movies would lose some of their attraction. No one disagree with the powerful effect music has on people. Whether this effect is positive or negative, however, often depends on the type of music listened to. And researches have shown that certain types of music own the ab ility to relieve one’s anxiety(焦虑), improve brain development in children, uplift one’s memory and help patients to recover...just to name a few.It should come as no surprise then, that researchers from the Tufts University have found that background music has the ability to directly affect one’s eating habits as well. They counted the bites of food people took at meals while listening to different types of music. The diners “ate at an average rate of 3.9 bites per minute”, with about a third of the di ners requesting more food after clearing their plates. On the other hand, with “spirited tunes, ”the diners “sped up to an average of 5.1 bites per minute! ”Not surprising however, when “calming flute instrumental” were played, the eating speed of the dine rs slowed “to 3.2 bites per minute—and the bites became smaller”. They didn’t request second helpings and praised that the food tasted better.Studies have clearly stated that one safe way of losing weight includes eating slowly. Since it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell the brain that it's full, eating slowly will help you to eat to satisfaction—without overdoing it. With this important piece of information then, it leads one to believe that with the use of calming background instrumental music, one can slow their food digestion, “retraining” both the stomach and the brain to take in less food which could leadto weight lost.Is there any truth to this theory? One will never know unless they try it themselves. Even if it doesn't work fo r you, at least you’ll achieve a bit of relaxing and pleasant environment during your meal periods. A great meal with great music—who could ask for anything more?24. Which of the following is NOT the benefit of listening to certain types of musicaccording to the passage?A. Strengthening one’s body.B. Relieving one’s anxiety.C. Increasing one’s memory.D. Improving children’s brain development.25. The research reported from the Tufts University showed that __________.A. background music makes the food served delicious and lovelyB. the types of music people listened to could exactly show their eating habitsC. background music could produce a comfortable eating environment for peopleD. background music could influence people’s eating speed and how much they eat26. Which of the following statements agrees with the writer’s view in the passage?A. People will eat less if they don’t like the background music.B. Every type of music has the power to affect people positively.C. Though we’re not sure whether listening to music can help lose weight, it’s worth a try.D. Most of the restaurants now offer background music for their customers.CWhen a storm is coming, most people leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety. But there are a few people who will get into their cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These people are willing to risk being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up."Storm chasing(追逐)is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weatherreports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm season.Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement." Storm chasing is 95% driving," says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing." Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers."However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you ge t close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth.”27. For storm chasing, the first thing storm chasers do is to __________ .A. head straight for the center of the stormB. get into the car for safetyC. wait patiently for the storm to developD. collect information about a coming storm28. Beginners of storm chasing are advised ________________ .A. not to drive in a heavy rainB. to do it in an organized wayC. not to get too close to a stormD. to spend more time on it in summer29. By saying "it is all worth it" in the last paragraph, the author means that_______ .A. storm chasing costs a lot of moneyB. storm chasing is worth hours of waitingC. efforts in storm chasing are well paidD. a storm presents the greatest show on Earth30. What can we learn from the text?A. Sometimes storm chasers get nothing but disappointment.B. Many storm chasers get killed in the storms.C. Storm chasing is becoming popular around the world.D. Storm chasing is only fit for young people.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。
