英国文化及中国文化对比英文

英国文化及中国文化对比英文

英国文化及中国文化对比英文The cultural differences between the United Kingdom andChina are significant and reflect the unique historical, social, political, and economic backgrounds of these two nations. Inthis essay, we will explore some of the main aspects that distinguish British and Chinese culture. One of the most apparent differences between these two cultures is language. While English is the official language in the United Kingdom, China has Mandarin Chinese as its official language, spoken by the majority of its population. The written forms of these languages also vastly differ, with English using the Latin alphabet and Chinese using logographic characters.Another notable contrast lies in the cultural attitude towards individualism and collectivism. The British culture emphasizes individualism, valuing personal achievement and independence. On the other hand, Chinese culture is collectivist, prioritizing the needs of the group over the individual. Confucian principles, such as filial piety and respect for authority, greatly influence Chinese society.Food is a significant aspect of both cultures, albeit with distinct characteristics. British cuisine is often associatedwith traditional dishes such as fish and chips, roast beef, and English breakfast. Chinese cuisine, on the other hand, isdiverse and varies greatly across regions. It is known for itsemphasis on fresh ingredients, distinctive flavors, and cooking techniques such as stir-frying and steaming.Cultural celebrations also differ between the UK and China. Chinese New Year is a major event in the Chinese calendar, marked with family reunions, fireworks, and elaborate lion dances. The British celebrate holidays such as Christmas, Easter, and Guy Fawkes Night with traditions such as decoratingChristmas trees, exchanging gifts, and attending family gatherings.Religion plays a significant role in both cultures as well. Christianity is the dominant religion in the UK, with various denominations present throughout the country. In contrast, China is known for its religious diversity, including Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Christianity among others. Traditional Chinese beliefs also involve ancestor worship and spiritual practices such as feng shui.Another difference lies in the cultural attitude towards hierarchy and social etiquette. British society values politeness, punctuality, and formal manners. In China, hierarchical relationships and social harmony are highly regarded. Respect for elders and authority figures isparticularly emphasized, and proper social etiquette is crucial. These examples highlight just a few of the many differences between British and Chinese culture. It is important to note, however, that these cultural distinctions should not be seen as inherently superior or inferior to one another. Instead, they reflect unique traditions and values that have evolved over centuries. Understanding and appreciating these cultural differences can foster mutual respect and better international relations between the UK and China.。

Differences in Chinese culture and English culture 浅谈中英文化的不同

Differences in Chinese culture and English culture 浅谈中英文化的不同

Differences in Chinese culture and English culture(1) Addressing terms. Both western and Chinese people have two kinds of personal names---a surname and a given name. But the order and the use of these names in the two languages are kind of different. In Chinese, the surname comes first and then comes the given name. And people like putting“小”before their family name. Such as“小王”、“小李”、“小刘”、“小赵”and so on. While westerner’s names are written and spoken with the given name first and the family name last. So Sam King's family name is King, rather than Sam. In a formal occasions, people often address men as Mister(Mr), married women as Misses(Mrs), and unmarried women as >Miss. Nowadays most women prefer to be addressed using the abbreviations Ms. or M., pronounced /miz/. If the person has an M.D. or Ph.D., they will often be addressed as "Doctor" (Dr.). Faculty are addressed as "Professor" (Prof.).In an informal situation, westerners will introduce each other by first name, without titles, and occasionally by just the last name. If you are introduced to somebody by first name, you can address him or her by first name the next time you meet. The only exception would be for someone who holds an important position, such as the university president or provost. Unless they tell you otherwise, faculty should be addressed using their title and last name (e.g., "Professor King"). Another difference is about the form of addressing. From the viewpoint of sociolinguistics, forms of addressing can serve as an indication of the relationship of power and solidarity in the society. In calling their superiors or elders, the Chinese are accustomed to the nonreciprocal or asymmetrical addressing, in other words. They use “surname + title” to address their superior or elders rather than call them surnames directly, while the superior or elders call the addressers their names. The Chinese tend to abide by the polite principle of depreciating oneself and respecting others to show appropriate respects towards the persons being addressed, otherwise, the addresser may be considered as ill-mannered, ill-educated or rude. But in English speaking countries, people have a tendency to follow the reciprocal or symmetrical addressing. Although they are different in age and status, they can call the other directly, namely, their names, even first names except when they call the doctors, not arousing offence between them, but demonstrating the sense of intimacy and the conception of “Everyone is created equal”.Chinese people feel it unnatural to address a westerner by his given name, feeling that it indicates too close a relationship, and westerners, on the other hand, may feel that if a Chinese insists on using his surname, it indicates an unwillingness to be friendly and maintains a distance between them. So theuse of forms like “Miss Echo” or “Mr. King” may be a Chinese form of compromise. With Miss Echo, the use of the given name indicates friendliness, but the addition of the title indicates the respect they feel they ought to show. And with King, the lack of a title indicates friendliness, but the use of the surname prevents it sounding too intimate. However, both addressings used by the Chinese sound very strange and uncomfortable to the westerner. (2) GreetingsThe purpose of greeting is to establish or maintain social contact. So formulaic expressions are often used, but such formulaic expressions often cause misunderstanding and conflict because of the great cultural differences between Chinese and English speakers. In English, people often use the following expressions to greet each other: “Good morning/evening/afternoon”, “Fine day, isn’t it?” “How is everything going?” etc. In contrast, in china, people usually use expressions like “你吃了吗?”“你上哪里去?”“你干什么去?”to show our friendliness.(3) ThanksIn everyday life, everyone will inevitably meet some difficulties. Then, if somebody lends you a hand, we often should express our thanks to him/her. As for the expressions used for thanks, they are different in different cultures. China has a history of several thousand years, but the history of using “谢谢” is very short and also its frequency is much lower than in the west. In thecross-cultural communication, we often hear expressions like “thank you” or “thanks”. Even if you don’t need others’ help, you should also express thanks for their concern of you, e.g. “Can I help you, madam?”“No, thank you”. There is even no exception to the family members. Husband may say “thank you” to wife. Parents say “thank you” to their children. But in China, influenced by the Chinese traditional culture, people hardly use “谢谢” at home. Also in the Chinese traditional culture, when being praised or complimented, people don’t use “谢谢” for fear that they be regarded as immodest. In service industry, such as in hotel, restaurant, airport, etc., people seldom express thanks, which foreigners feel very indifferent.(4) ComplimentCompliment is used to praise the addressee’s virtues, ability, behavior, appearance, clothing, personality and belongings. Appropriate compliments can serve as effective supplementary means in inter-personal communication. Western and Chinese culture are very different about compliment. In western culture, the frequency of compliments is higher than in Chinese culture.(Gu Yueguo, 1994)It’s considered very common for a man to praise the outlook, figure, and clothing of a lady. When an American is talking with friends, he compliments his family every now and then. So when you hear ladies say “my husband is marvelous” or when you hear husbands say “I got a pretty wife”, don’t get surprised. But this kind of words in traditional Chinese culture is looked upon as a taboo. A western hostess is likely to say, “Oh, I am so glad that you liked it. I cook it especially for you.” if she is complimented for her cooking skill. Not so is a Chinese hostess, who will instead apologize for giving you “Nothing”. They tend to say“随便作几个菜,不好吃”. If translated this into English, it is that “I just made some dishes casually and they are not very tasty”. Perhaps the foreigner will think why you invite him/her to your family and have the nasty food. What’s more, they may think you don’t r espect him/her. So the English-speaking people are more prone to praising others and being praised than Chinese people. The Americans are straight forward, while the Chinese are proud of modesty. Thanks to that modesty, many a Chinese has left hungry at an Americans table, for Chinese politeness calls for three refusals before one accepts an offer and the Americans hosts take “no” as “no”, whether it is the first, second or third time. Still bigger differences exist in people’s response to compliments. Chin ese tend to efface themselves in words or refuse it, although they do feel comfortable about the compliments. So many westerners simply feel perplexed or even upset when their Chinese friends refuse their compliments. The Chinese people are not intending to be modest with the sacrifice of friendship in so doing, but it is due to the traditional Chinese philosophy, i.e. that of modesty. The Chinese people consider modesty as a most valuable virtue, so they seldom agree to the compliment on themselves.(5)IntroductionThe Chinese mostly observe the modest aspect. Westerners think that Chinese has a lot of tradition of self-depreciation reflecting modesty. For example, calling oneself as “humble person”(鄙人), or “humble brother”(小弟)and so on; one’s own son is “little dog”(犬子), or “ small child”(小儿); one’s own home is “cold home”(寒舍), or “poor shed”(陋舍); one’s own work is “clumsy work”(拙著), or “poor work”(拙作)。

Afternoon everyone , glad here to share this time’s presentation with all of you . And today my topic is Leisure Activities In Britain.1. First I’m going to show you two groups of brief statistics of how the Britons spend their free time. From the first one we can see ,generally, their leisure time is divided into three main parts …which I think include …2. The second group of statistics is a little bit specific .As we can see , …3. Here I am to say that DIY used to be very popular in Britain but a recent research suggests that Britons' love affair with DIY is waning(decline), and they would rather employ someone else to do the home improvements.Today I am not going to introduce all of the above , instead I choose several kinds of activities that we might not be familiar with .I divided the project into two part as Leisure at Home and Leisure outside the Home.About Leisure at Home , I select three aspects ——British Soap Opera, puzzle and gardening.OK ,then let’s begin with the British Soap Opera.Well ,as we have known from those two groups of statistics, watching TV is a very popular pastime in the UK . But what kind of programmes do British people like to watch? Well, the most-watched TV programmes every week are very popular dramas that are usually on at least four times every week. They are dramas based in one neighborhood that try to describe ordinary life in the UK ——we call these dramas ‘soap operas’ or ‘soaps’.British Soap Operas can be very very long, and some of them have even lasted for several decades.Let’s look at the two main popular ones .they are both very long .1. The first one, Eastenders, which is called伦敦东区/东区人in Chinese, set in the East End of London. You know that , the former East End usd to be regarded as a slum , where poor people gathered to live, including the famous “Jack the Ripper”(for 开膛手杰克in Chinese ). And now , the place has attracted many talented young artists and designers. The drama started in 1985 and is still continuing to be on till now by BBC . Here is the screenshot(截图) for Eastenders from the official website of BBC. And we can see… till now ,it has lasted for 28 years.2. The second one, is considered to be more famous. That is Coronation Street . In Chinese means 加冕街. It is set in a suburb of Manchester and it’s supposed to represent working class life in the north of England. Also ,it is regarded as theUK's longest-running TV soap as it has been on since 1960 , lasting for 53 years. And the mark in the right picture is in memory of its 50th anniversary , in 2010. It is also said that Coronation Street is the Queen’s favorite TV soap and have won many big prizes in Britain .Then let’s move on to the second part about Leisure at Home. That is——puzzle. You know that, nearly three quarters of people in the UK now do some sort of puzzle, from newspaper crosswords and coffee-break teasers to puzzles in magazines and even taking part at home in TV shows. And we can see how popular puzzle is in Britain .●Of course ,most of us have played it when we were young ,and now let’shave a small review for it.When we are doing a Cross Word Puzzle, we are supposed to do …the first acros s line … the word consist of 9 letters and it is easy to come up with the word “honeymoon”. Also ,the following steps are just similar . In particular, we will often have a special sense of achievement when we have finished the whole puzzle.●I am sure you know the famous handsome guy ——yes he is Beckham . Butdo you know what he is doing? He seems to enjoy it a lot . Yes, he is doing a Cross Word Puzzle. The two pictures are also my screenshot, from thepublicity film of 2012 London Olympic games(2012伦敦奥运宣传片). Later I will show the film.●Ok ,here the two pictures are Puzzle of Downton Abbey selling in aBritain shop or on the internet. But here , puzzle doesn’t mean 字谜but means 拼图in Chinese. Of course , they are also very popular. Then let’s move on to the last part about Leisure at Home. That is——gardening.●The British are known as a nation of gardeners and are called good greenfingers. Most Britons have a garden on their property. Gardening has been a popular pastime since Roman times. Many people in Britain are proud of their houses & gardens. They want their houses & gardens to look nice.●Here are several pictures of …●And then let’s take a look at an excerpt(节选,摘录) from an interview witha BBC horticulturist. Here we need to take several point that …And finally I am going to introduce the Chelsea Garden Show .●Chelsea Garden Show is known as the annually traditional garden show inBritain as well as the most famous and extraordinary garden show in the world. In Britain , it is said that there are three affair that will cause traffic jam ——the first one is the Queen’s cruise, the second one is the football team’s triumphant return(凯旋), and the last one is ,of curse, Chelsea Garden Show.Chelsea Garden Show was first held in London in 1913. And this year is its 100th anniversary. And here are three pictures of the design sketch of this year’s ShowGardens.Ok ,then ,let’s move on to the second big part——Leisure outside the Home, which also includes three aspects ——Britain pub culture,Gambling, and sportsFirst, Britain pub culture.•Well ,you know, One thing British is famous for is pubs, and no trip to the UK would be complete without a visit to one of the thousands of pubs across the country, as going to the pub is the most popular leisure activity outside the home . Pubs play an important part not only in British life but also in the social structure of the country. They are places where all ages and social classes mix to talk, do business, or just spend a couple of quiet hours before heading home in the evening. Pub culture is designed to promote sociability in a society known for its reserve. So we call it a kind of “culture”.•Next I am going to show you several pictures of Activities in pubs. These are the ones we are familiar with ,such as … and the three are not familiar to us. They are called… I think it should be interesting to play these games. Then let’s take a look at the second part about Leisure outside the Home——Gambling♦It is very interesting to hear that the Britons regard themselves as the nation keen on gambling most as well as Chinese in the world . They gamble almost everything , on bets placed at Bookies (as the picture shows,…),on football pools ,on horse racing, even on Her Majesty ,the queen ,would wear what color for her arrival or if there would be a UFO in the ceremony of 2012 London Olympic games.♦And what I want to introduce is the National Lottery .♦You may not understand why there are so many Britons buying Lottery, then let’s look at the highest fortune it has provided. Yes ,it’s …incredibly , it ‘s nearly equal to the whole property that Beckham owns.♦We should also notice that …Finally ,last part ,also a very important part of Britons’outdoor leisure activities is sports. The first one——soccer. It is American English ,and we can also call it football in British English. You know, that Football is undoubtedly the most popular sport in England, and has been played for hundreds of years. It has become a kind of culture rather than sport in Britain.❖Some of England's football teams are world famous, the most famous being Manchester United, Arsenal(阿森纳) and Liverpool..❖The highlight of the English football year is the FA (short for the Football Association) Cup Final each May.And there are several interesting phenomenon referring to Britons’ love for football.❖For British people, football is a must in their daily life. After work, most shops are closed except pubs. Many people think that evening life in Britain is dull ,but in fact, most evening life exists in pubs, and watching the football games is an important part of the pub culture. As we can see from the first picture, these British man are now watching the football games in the pub and cheering for their favorite team.❖And also ,It’s said that for a British man, maybe he cannot keep loyal to his wife, but he is usually loyal to his team.❖More interestingly, there seems to be a phenomenon that a fan’s loyalty toa team often descends to his son. The reason why a fan likes his team is thathis father or grandfather, even grand-grand-father is the fan of the team & he is strongly influenced by them in his childhood. The nation really shows a great enthusiasm and talent for football. The second kind of sport I am going to introduce is Rugby .●Rugby is similar to football, but played with an oval ball. Players can carrythe ball & tackle each other. The best rugby teams compete in the Super League final each September.●For many years rugby was only played by the upper classes, but now it ispopular all over the country. There are two different types of rugby - Rugby League, played mainly in the north of England, & Rugby Union, played in the rest of England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland. England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland, together with France & Italy, play in an annual tournament called the Six Nations. The third one , which is also very famous , is tennis.❖And The world's most famous tennis tournament is the Wimbledon Championship.(as we are familiar with the word 温网in Chinese). It started at a small club in the London suburb of Wimbledon since 1877. It is still played on grass courts.❖The tournament takes place over 2 weeks in late June & early July, at a time when England often has the finest weather. 中英文化对比的英文作文

中英文化对比的英文作文英文:Culture is a fascinating topic to explore, especially when comparing different cultures. As someone who has experienced both Chinese and English culture, I find it interesting to compare and contrast the two.Firstly, one of the biggest differences between Chinese and English culture is the concept of individualism versus collectivism. In Chinese culture, there is a strong emphasis on the importance of the group and the family, whereas in English culture, individualism is highly valued. This can be seen in the way people interact with each other and in their attitudes towards personal achievement. For example, in Chinese culture, it is common for people to live with their parents until they get married and to take care of their elderly parents. This is because family is seen as the most important thing in life. Incontrast, in English culture, it is more common for people to move out of their parents' home at a young age and to focus on their own personal goals and achievements.Another difference between Chinese and English culture is the way people communicate. In Chinese culture, indirect communication is often used, where people may not directly say what they mean or may use nonverbal cues to conveytheir message. In English culture, direct communication is more common, where people tend to say exactly what they mean. For example, in Chinese culture, it is considered impolite to say "no" directly, so people may use phrases such as "maybe" or "I'll think about it" to decline an invitation. In contrast, in English culture, it is more common to simply say "no" if you are not able to attend.中文:文化是一个非常有趣的话题,尤其是在比较不同的文化时。
