We were hot, sticky, and mad that the fish refused to try our night crawlers.Being only seven years old, I observed that perhaps the worms were the problem. Maybe the night crawlers only moved at night, and now they were just lying still there. Dad ignored my guessing. We began to pack up to leave. As we headed back to our truck, we heard tires roaring in the distance. Getting into our truck was tough. Having sat in the boiling sun for six hours, I found the seats were burning.I shifted from side to side in the seat so as not to cook my bottom. While driving out we sawa truck stuck in the mud. That explained the sound of roaring tires we’d heard.Being a nice guy, my dad helped pull the man from the mud. In return, this fellow gave Dad some fish for being a Good Samaritan. As Dad climbed back into our truck with a brown bag full of fish, we waved goodbye to our newfound friend. On the drive home, we agreed to take in the fish as if we had caught them. We were sure there was no way for Mom to know the difference. It was just a little white lie.We arrived home hot and sweaty, and went to shower while Mom prepared the fish. After showering, Dad and I met in the hall and sat down to enjoy freshly fried fish. We started eating happily and went on talking about how delicious the fish tasted. As we got up to do the dishes, Mom cleared her throat. “I just have one question for you two great fishermen,” she said. We looked at her expectantly, thinking we had another opportunity to delight her with our great fishing ability. With a big smile, Mom asked, “How was it that you two managed to not only clean your fish, but also freeze them before you got home?”1. Why didn’t the fish eat the night crawlers?A. The weather was too hot.B. The fish were not hungry.C. The reason was not clear.D. The night crawlers d idn’t move.2. Dad was called a Good Samaritan for ________.A. helping a strangerB. taking in the fishC. showing great strengthD. making friends with a stranger3. Mom smiled in the end because________A. she was pleased by the clean fishB. she was amused by the little white lieC. she did not need to deal with the messD. she was satisfied with their fishing ability【阅读理解B篇】B(2022·皖八一模)Recent studies suggest global food production is responsible for one-third of all planet-heating emissions, with the use of animals for meat accounting for twice the pollution of producing plant based foods. Forests that absorb carbon dioxide are cut down for raising animals while fertilisers used for growing their feed are rich in nitrogen, which can contribute to air and water pollution, climate change and ozone depletion. Livestock also produces large quantities of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.A Dutch city will become the first in the world to ban meat advertisements from public spaces in an effort to reduce consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.Haarlem, which lies to the west of Amsterdam and has a population of about 160,000, will pass the prohibition from 2024 after meat was added to a list of products thought to contribute to the climate crisis. Ads will not be allowed on Haarlem’s buses, shelters and screens in public spaces, prompting the complaint from the meat sector that local authority is “going too far in telling people what’s best for them”.Ziggy Klazes, who drafted the proposal banning meat advertising, said she had not known the city would be the world’s first to enforce such a policy when she proposed it. She told a radio channel: “We do not prohibit what people are baking and roasting in their own kitchen; if people wanted to continue eating meat, fine... We can’t tell people there’s a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause.”The ban also covers holiday flights, fossil fuels and cars that run on fossil fuels. The ban is delayed until 2024 due to existing contracts with companies that sell the products. Research suggests that to meet the EU target of net zero emissions by 2050, meat consumption must be reduced to 24kg per person per year, compared with the current average of 82kg.4. Why does Haarlem intend to ban meat advertisements?A. To take the lead in cutting emission.B. To switch food to plant-based food.C. To stop advocating eating meat publicly.D. To contribute to the climate crisis.5. What does the phrase underlined in paragraph 3 probably mean?A. The government have taken too much control of people.B. The local authority is wrong about the best meat.C. Meat sector complains for harming their interests.D. Climate crisis has gone too far to be left untreated.6. What is Ziggy Klazes’s attitude to eating meat?A. Uncaring.B. Opposing.C. Guilty.D. Understanding.7. What can be inferred about the ban?A. It won’t benefits the EU market.B. It has a long way to go.C. It is a short-sighted decision.D. It can hardly meet the target.【七选五】(2022·浙江A9协作体联考)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled on, constantly staring at this wall that faced me. My perfectionist tendencies were the main root of this: I wanted to be perfect at whatever I did, which obviously in life is not possible, but it consumed me.One day, I attended a presentation by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at my high school. His presentation not only awed and inspired me, but also helped emerge an inner desire to make a difference in the world. I joined a pre-presentation dinner with him and that smaller setting allowed me to slowly build up my courage to speak one-on-one with him—an idea that had seemed completely impossible. This first contact was where my story began.A month later, Brown invited me to attend the World Youth Wildlife Conference. Looking back, I now see that this would be the first in a series of timely opportunities that my old self would have let pass, but that this new and more confident Alice enthusiastically seized. Shortly after I received his invitation, applications to join the Youth for Nature and the Youth for Planet groups were sent around through my high school. I decided to commit to completing the applications, and soon I was a part of a growing global team of young people working to protect nature. Each of these new steps continued to grow my confidence.I am writing this just six months since my journey began and I’ve realised that my biggest obstacle this whole time was myself. It was that voice in the back of my head telling me that one phrase that has stopped so many people from reaching their potential: I can’t. They say good things come to those who wait; I say: grab every opportunity with everything you have and be impatient. After all, nature does not require our patience, but our action.4. What was the main cause for Alice’s anxiety?A. Her inability to act her age.B. Her habit of consumption.C. Her desire to be perfect.D. Her lack of inspiration.5. How did Grant Brown’s presentation influence Alice?A. She decided to do something for nature.B. She tasted the sweetness of friendship.C. She learned about the harm of desire.D. She built up her courage to speak up.6. The activities Alice joined in helped her to become more ________.A. intelligentB. confidentC. innovativeD. critical7. What can we learn from this passage?A. Practice makes perfect.B. Patience is a cure of anxiety.C. Action is worry’s worst enemy.D. Everything comes to those who wait.【七选五】(2022·六安一中高三月考)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The bold headmaster thought the fun and energetic exercise routine would better encourage students to get active instead of “being glued to their mobile phones”.The school’s new 30minute dance routine has replaced the government imposed broadcast callisthenics(健身操) programme, a short workout that has been a requirement at every primary, middle and secondary school in China since 1951. “I thought we needed a change because the students have been losing interest in doing the broadcast callisthenics routine,”Zhang told Southern Metropolis Daily. The dedicated principal said he came across a group of people doing the “ghost shuffle” routine at a public plaza last summer and decided to learn the dance himself. “I thought the dance would be great for kids,” he said. “The music is full of energy and it really gets the happy feeling of flowing.” In October, he introduced the choreographed(编舞) routine to all of his students and shortly after, even teachers and staff were joining in.“Now the students aren’t constantly on their phones. As Americans moved across the country, they said English would become standardized, meaning that it would be spoken the same way everywhere. But sociolinguist William Labov of the Universityof Pennsylvania says, while some accents in America are disappearing, others are growing stronger. One of these regional accents is Native American English, known a s the “rez accent”. It is spoken in many Indigenous communities in the United States and Canada. The word “rez” is shortened from the word “reservation”. Reservations are areas of land in the United States and Canada that are kept separate for Native Americans or Indigenous people to live in.Kalina Newmark is from the Sahtu Region in Canada’s Northwest Territories. Her ancestors were called the Dene people, but she does not speak her tribe’s language of Slavey. “My mom can understand and speak it, but she didn’t pass it on to us. She learned it from her great-grandmother. My grandmother chose not to pass along the language because she wanted to make it easier for her children when they went to school,” Newmark said. Newmark went to Dartmouth College in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. The school is known for its Indigenous student population. There, she met other Indigenous students from all over North America. Newmark noticed something very interesting about everyone’s pronunciation. The English they spoke shared some similar qualities, although they came from different language backgrounds. These especially could be heard during times of socializing. The accent was even present for students who had not learned their ancestral language. Indigenous communities speak different English dialects, but these ways of speaking shared prosody patterns. The rez accent possibly came from different Native tribes interacting in the 1880s when Indigenous peoples were placed on reservations. The Native American and First Nations children were forced into school and had to speak English. The rez accent also might have had its beginning in the 1950s and 1960s when the US government closed some reservations and sent Native American into cities. The children were forced to speak English and interact with each other. “They were all learning English together,” said Newmark, “and making an English of theirown.”1. What can we infer from Kalina Newmark’s experience?A. She learnt her tribe’s language from her mother.B. Her ancestors spoke English with rez accent.C. Native American students account for a considerable percentage in her school.D. Indigenous students speak English in exactly the same way in the school.2. Which statement is TRUE about the “rez accent”?A. It is a shared pattern of speaking English among the Indigenous population.B. It originated from the Native Americans’ ancestral languages.C. Us government is worried about the tendency of speaking English with rez accent.D. The reason for the continuing growth of rez accent has been confirmed.3. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?A. By making a comparison.B. By analyzing a reason.C. By giving an example.D. By having an argument.4. What is the main idea of the text?A. Accents of American English are disappearing.B. Native Americans speak English with a similar accent.C. Indigenous people obtain rez accent from their ancestors.D. The majority of Americans don’t speak standardized English.【阅读理解D篇】D(2022·江淮十校二模)Frederik Duerinck isn’t a jeweller, but his next project is a necklace. This piece, though, doesn’t feature a precious stone as a decoration, but rather a small box. Inside the cube is a battery and scenting system designed to deliver a puff of fragrance on demand that Duerinck describes as a “scent bubble”. Duerinck acknowledges that its current size and battery life are barriers, as is the quality of the scent and the projection. But he remains optimistic. The next step, he hopes, is to improve it enough to win over investors and secure funding for further development on a wearable version.Duerinck, of course, isn’t the first to try to deliver scents on demand to people’s noses in an attempt to create a more immersive sensory experience. In the movie era, attempts to add scent began as early as 1916. Then came Smellovision, unveiled in 1939, it was equal to a series of pipes attached to viewers’ chairs through which a projectionist could deliver smell and show the images at the same time. Smellovision itself, was a failure, largely because the scent technology worked so poorly—the scents were too diffuse to give a satisfactory experience.Clearing a particular scent in time for the next to move freely was also troublesome. A rival system, known as Aromarama, displayed similar shortcomings. The filmmaker John Waters tried scratch and sniff cards in the early 1980s, but no other filmmaker copied his trick.Even now, though, as the world of entertainment has become more high-tech, and immersive with virtual reality headsets, scent remains the one element that is difficult to find and hard to copy. Perhaps the most fundamental problem is that we don’t yet fully understand how our sense of smell functions.5. What’s the function of paragraph 1?A. To tell us the story of Frederik Duerinck.B. To promote a new product.C. To introduce the topic.D. To share the story of a “scent bubble”.6. What is the disadvantage of the special necklace?A. Its short battery life.B. Its particular scent.C. Its demanding environment.D. Its high price.7. What can be inferred from this text?A. Duerinck’s project is in need of financial support.B. In 1916, viewers’ chairs could deliver smell.C. Many filmmakers copied John’s trick.D. Aromarama worked better than Smellovision.8. What is the biggest challenge while making films with scent?A. The scent technology doesn’t offer a satisfying experience.B. Researchers don’t know how our sense of smell works.C. Clearing scent in time is still a puzzle.D. The operation is too complex.【完形填空】(2022·湖北重点中学联考)阅读下面短文,从所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to his small room, feeling tired. He had started working at seven in the morning, and it was eight in the evening now. He had to prepare his lessons for the following day. This is a typical day for Zhang Tian. Coming to Guizhou Province to teach has been quite an experience for him.Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher’s certificate last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently, however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle. He had met wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village. However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian’s hopes. The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was also more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook. The thought of leaving once flashed through his mind.Zhang Tian’s first service year is almost over.组合练(二)Ⅰ.Dear Jack,Knowing that you’re interested in our school’s Innovative Lantern Show, I’m writing to share something about it.Last Saturday evening, hundreds of lighted lanterns, all of which were students’ self-made works, were hanging between the trees on campus, getting viewers into a fantastic world. (2021·山东泰安二模)It was going to be my first day at Rainbow Middle School. Everyone else was coming back from winter holiday, but I was going to be new in this school. After getting out of my mother’s car, I looked around and noticed that kids were gathering around in the hallways with their friends, whispering and giggling. Not knowing anyone and having nowhere to go, I decided to just wait outside until the bell rang.I was standing outside Mrs Everett’s classroom reading a novel named Oliver Twist, when I glanced back to find someone looking over my shoulder.“Are you new here? Anyway, I absolutely love the novel! It’s one of my favourite novels. By the way, I’m Macy!” the girl said.I was about to answer when the bell cut me off. Shyly, I entered the classroom to find Mrs Everett smiling and she led me to a seat. Once everyone came in and sat down, Mrs Everett called me up to the front and introduced me to the class. As I scanned their faces, I noticed that they looked bored and didn’t seem to care about me. I returned to my seat and listened to the teacher for the rest of the class. The lunch bell rang and I got out of the classroom, checking my backpack for my lunch. Scanning the lunch tables, I was nervously wondering where I should sit when I saw Macy approaching me.“Hey, if you want, you can come and sit with us.” Macy offered as she pointed to a pink table near the classrooms. Feeling happy, I glanced over where she was pointing and followed her over. Suddenly, my shoelace untied at that moment. Then I knocked into Macy and dropped my lunchbox. 题型重组练(一)(建议用时:30分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2019·湖南雅礼中学高三模拟)Don’t get mad the next time you catch your teenager texting when he promised to be studying. He simply may not be able to resist. A UI(University of Iowa) study found teenagers are far more sensitive than adults to the immediate effect or reward of their behaviors. The findings may help explain why the initial rush of texting may be more attractive for adolescents than the long-term payoff of studying.“For the teenager, the rewards are attractive,”says Professor Jatin Vaidya, an author of the study. “They draw adolescents. Sometimes, the rewards are a kind of motivation for them. Even when a behavior is no longer in a tee nager’s best interest to continue, he will still go on. That’s because the effect of the reward is still there and lasts much longer in adolescents than in adults.”For parents, that means limiting distraction so teenagers can make better choices. Take the homework and social media dilemma for example: At 9 p.m., shut off everything except a computer that has no access to Facebook or Twitter, the researchers advise. “I’m not saying they shouldn’t be allowed to have access to technology,”Vaidya says. “But some help in netting their concentration is necessary for them so they can develop those impulse(冲动)-control skills.”In their study, Vaidya and coauthor Shaun Vecera note researchers generally believe teenagers are impulsive, make bad decisions, and engage in risky behavior because the frontal lobes(额叶) of their brains are not fully developed. But the UI researchers wonder whether something more fundamental is going on with adolescents to cause behaviors independent of higher-level reasoning.“We wanted to try to understand how the brain’s reward system changes from childhood to adulthood,”says Vaidya, who adds the reward character in the human brain is easier than decisionmaking. “We’ve been trying to understand the reward process in adolescence and whether there is more to adolescence behavior than an underdeveloped frontal lobe,”he adds. For their study, the researchers persuaded 40 adolescents, aged 13 and 16, and 40 adults, aged 20 and 35 to participate. In the future, researchers hope to look into the psychological and neurological aspects of their results.1.What does the passage mainly tell us?A.Always, rewards are attractive to teenagers.B.Resistance can be controlled well by adolescents.C.Getting rewards is the greatest motivation for adolescents to study.D.The initial rush of texting is less attractive for adolescents than the longterm payoff of studying.2.Which statement agrees with Jatin Vaidya’s idea?A.Children should have access to the Internet.B.Children need help in refocusing their attention.C.Parents should help children in making decisions.D.The influence of the reward is weak in adolescents.3.What result does teenagers’brain underdevelopment lead to?A.Making good decisions.B.Escaping risky behavior.C.Joining in dangerous actions.D.Doing things after some thought.4.How did the researchers carry out their study?A.By examining adults’brain.B.By examining teenagers’brain.C.By building th e brain’s reward system.D.By making a comparison of brain examinations.BStan Lee, cofounder of the Marvel Universe(漫威宇宙) and co-creatorof many of its most popular superheroes, died at the age of 95.Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York in 1922. People were carelessly blocking aisles, complaining and cutting one another off with their carts.Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a man's discount card, but he misread the savings on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting deliberately and began to argue.“She is being spiteful (恶意的)!” he yelled. “This is unbelievable.”Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him. She called a manager, who accompanied the man to customer service. Shaken, she moved to the next customer in line. We've all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. The grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has eroded. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faith — starting with just one person.Back at the grocery store, my wife and I reached our uneasy cashier. I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and handed it to her. “We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you,” I said. Her face lit up, and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening through severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week. We wished her well in her recovery, and she thanked us as we left. Those are the balancing acts, the moments of responding social and emotional pain with healing, which will add up to restore trust among people. You can start that pattern in someone else's life, even in a place as ordinary as the neighborhood grocery store.

By the end of December, the tally (计数器) of flulike illnesses in the state exceeded the peaks in the two previous seasons, when the biggest number of cases occurred in February and March. This time, the flu virus seems to be hitting even harder.Flu is unique among human diseases. It circulates constantly in cool and dry areas. Because it spreads from person to person and can be picked up easily, nearly everyone is exposed. While it's unclear whether the annual flu epidemic (流行病) will worsen this year, or just arrived earlier, fears have been increased by the severity of flu in Australia during its most recent season and the fact that the vaccine may protect against the predominant (盛行的) kind of the flu only 30 percent of the time.Despite the worries, doctors and public health officials say there is no evidence that people are getting sicker than usual. Flu cases in Massachusetts started rising around Thanksgiving and increased steadily, with an especially steep climb in the last week of the year. “This is a bad flu season but not a horrible one,” said Dr. Andrew G. Villanueva, a lung specialist and chief quality officer at the Lahey Hospital & Medical Centre in Burlington.“The flu season, while clearly in_full_swing,_doesn't ‘feel different’ from previous years,”said Villanueva.“We're not seeing a lot of people being hospitalized because of flu,” he said. “Most people with the flu recover on their own without medical care.”【语篇解读】入冬至今,美国出现流感高发现象,病毒来势汹汹并在多地集中爆发,患者人数也达到了高峰,很多人陷入恐慌。

A tourist from Taiwan walked off a port near Melbourne last month while checking Facebook—bringing an abrupt, and icy end to a penguin- watching visit. Another shopper in the U. S. was too addicted to his mobile phone to notice the fountain ahead—walking straight into it.And as mobile-phone use has grown—to about 77% of the world’s population, the study says—so has the number of phone-related accidents. The number of U. S. emergency-room visits linked to phone use on the move doubled to as many as 1, 500 between 2005 and 2010, an Ohio State University study recently showed.Authorities world-wide have taken note. Signs on Hong Kong’s subway system advise passengers in three languages to keep their eyes off their phones. Police and transport authorities have also warned the danger in Singapore, where the Straits Times newspaper ranked it as No. 2 Bad Habit due to the rising number of road deaths. Some U. S. states, including New York and Arkansas, are even considering bans on this act.The Australian study used 26 volunteers, a third of whom admitted having hit objects while texting. They were fitted with different equipment in different parts of their body, and asked to walk 8. 5 meters three times—once without a phone, once while reading a text and once while writing a text—while eight cameras captured the action.Volunteers using the phone walked slower and with shorter steps(and slowest of all when typing), and more seriously, they locked their arms and elbows in like “robots”, in the researchers’ words. That forced their heads to move more, throwing them off balance.“In a pedestrian environment, inability to maintain a straight path would be likely to increase potential for hits, falls and traffic accidents, ”said Mr van den Hoorn. “The best thing to do is to step aside and stop, or keep off the phone. ”【文章大意】本文主要介绍了什么是低头族以及这样会对自己或别人有什么样的危害。

But now,Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex, one of the UK’s largest shopping malls, has introduced its very own fast lane for shoppers in a hurry, aiming to help impatient shoppers avoid slow walkers and the anger that goes with them. The Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex has introduced a 720foot “fast lane” reserved for fast walkers only, just in time for the festive rush. The centre’s management team said,“ The lane will help the shoppers who know where they want to go quickly and don’t want to get caught in behind unhurried shoppers at the busiest time of the year.”The fast lane was introduced after a MasterCard survey found that 80 percent of consumers found slow walkers their biggest annoyance while shopping. The research also found that the average walking speed slowed down by 21 percent during the festive shopping period, as most shoppers spent more time window shopping during this period.Gary Mortimer, an expert from the Queensland University of Technology, said he wasn’t surprised by the promotion about the launch of the fast lane, and thought the concept would appeal to shoppers all over the world. “Crowded parking lots and busy shopping centres tend to be two of the biggest complaints of shoppers over the festive season,” he said.“I think the fast lanes are a new approach. However, I suspect it will be a bit like fast lanes on the highway, so it might end up being more trouble than its w orth.”The MasterCard survey also identified the four most common types of shoppers. They include “Skaters” who try and make their way through crowds politely,“Dodgers” who move down the paths to avoid slow walkers, “Bulldozers” who push their way through crowds, and “Tutters” whoexpress their frustrations to slow walkers.4.The fast lane is intended for the shoppers who ________.A.can’t move quickly because of physical disabilitiesB.buy things on their shopping lists quicklyC.take their time to do window shoppingD.want to leave the mall quickly5.What is Gary Mortimer’s attitude to the fast lane?A.Supportive. 2021年高考英语二轮复习题型重组第九组Ⅰ.阅读理解The following are six strange restaurants for a truly unique dining experience.Ithaa Undersea Restaurant—Rangali Island, MaldivesLocated at the Conrad Maldives, Rangali Island Resort is a gorgeous and intimate underwater restaurant (seating capacity is 14 people) that is more than sixteen feet below sea level. Opened in xx, the allglass restaurant has a menu consisting of fresh seafood, beef, and other delicious dishes. Encased in a transparent roof, the restaurant offers its diners a 270degree panoramic view(全景) of sea creatures swimming in the Maldives’ crystal clear waters. While a zinc paint(含锌漆) coating protects Ithaa’s steel structure from corrosion(腐蚀), the salt water and marine growths sticking to the paint will eventually break it down. Make a reservation while you still can.Dinner in the Sky—Montreal, CanadaGot an appetite for high altitudes? Originating in Belgium, the concept involves crane(吊车) lifting guests, who are safely strapped into “dining chairs” 160 feet up in the air, along with a table, wait staff, and everything that’s required to enjoy a meal floating above the ground. The noveltybased mobile restaurant has gained popularity worldwide and is now offered for limited run periods in cities around the globe, including Montreal, where it arrived in the summer of xx.Redwoods Treehouse—Warkworth, New ZealandBuilt in xx, the podshaped structure is located over 32 feet above the ground in a redwood tree in the town of Warkworth. Diners access the venue via an elevated(升高的) treetop walkway built of redwood milled on site. The striking venue is used exclusively for private functions and events, with a capacity of 30 guests.De Kas—Amsterdam, The NetherlandsLess strange than amazing:Imagine a restaurant where the menu selections are prepared using the freshest possible ingredients, and by freshest, we mean harvested in the field at sunrise of the same day you are dining there. Wele to De Kas, an old greenhouse in Amsterdam that was due to be pulled down in xx, but was saved by an ambitious Michelin star chef, Gert Jan Hageman, who changed the unique twenty sixfoot high glass building into a restaurant and nursery. Mediterranean vegetables, herbs and eatable flowers are grown and harvested at the greenhouse and garden near the restaurant, and Hageman can be found in De Kas’ nursery daily, working the soil, planting, weeding and harvesting herbs and vegetables. The Bubble Room—Captiva Island, FloridaOpened in 1979, this restaurant decorated with classic toys from the 1930s and 1940s started as a small oneroom eating place, and today has grown into a multi themed restaurant occupying all three stories of the house it originated in.Staff are known as “bubble scouts”,each wearing a different crazy hat.Moving trains are on all three floors and photographs of oldtime movie scenes and stars decorate every available wall spac e.“It’s always Christmas at the Bubble Room” is a theme made obvious by the presence of the many Father Christmases, the Elf Room, and yearround Christmas lights.Music from the 1920s to 1940s serves as the restaurant’s soundtrack, and the bright and cheerful pastel colors of the venue make it a wonderful experience.Favorites on the current menu are original items offered since the restaurant’s earl y days such as Socra cheese(a cheese served flamed tableside),Bubble Bread, and many of the largesized desserts.O. NOIR—Montreal, CanadaDining in the dark has been around for quite some time abroad, but the concept was only first introduced in Canada in xx, with the opening of O. NOIR in Montreal and then a second location in Toronto in xx.O. NOIR’s philosophy is that a diner’s enjoyment is increased when his sight is eliminated as the other senses bee heightened. Flashlights, cellphones, and luminous(发光的) watches are banned from the dark restaurant. The evening starts in a lit bar where guests place their orders;then they are led by a server into an unlit dining room, where a twohour seated dinner service begins with servers explaining where everything is placed on the table. bench, straightened his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their way through Grand Central Station. He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t,the girl with the rose. His interest in her had begun thirteen months before in a Florida library.Taking a book off the shelf he found himself intrigued(被迷住了的),not with the words of the book, but with the notes penciled in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind.In the front of the book,he discovered the previous owner’s name,Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. She lived in New York City.He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. The next day he was shipped overseas for service in World War Ⅱ.During the next year and one month the two grew to know each other through the mail. Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart.A romance was budding.Blanchard requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared,it wouldn’t matter what she looked like. When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting—7:00 PM at the Grand Central Station in New York.“You’ll recognize me,”she wrote,“by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my lapel.” So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for a girl whose heart he loved, but whose face he’d never seen.I’ll let Mr.Blanchard tell you what happened:A young woman was coming toward me,her figure long and slim. Her blonde hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears;her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime come alive.I started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose.As I moved,a small, attractive smile curved her lips.“Going my way, sailor?” she murmured.Almost uncontrollably I made one step closer to her,and then I saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing almost directly behind the girl.A woman well past 40,she had graying hair tucked under a worn hat.She was more than plump, her thickankled feet thrust into lowheeled shoes. The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away.I felt as though I was split in two,so keen was my desire to follow her,and yet so deep was my longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned me and upheld my own.And there she stood. Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible, and her gray eyes had a warm and kindly twinkle.I did not hesitate. My fingers gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was to identify me to her. This would not be love, but it would be something precious, something perhaps even better than love,a friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful.I squared my shoulders and saluted and held out the book to the woman, even though while I spoke I felt choked by the bitterness of my disappointment.“I’m Lieutenant(中尉) John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell.I am so glad you could meet me;may I take you to dinner?”The woman’s face broadened into a tolerant smile.“I don’t know what this is about, son,”she answered,“but the young lady in the green suit who just went by,she begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner,I should go and tell you that she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!”It’s not difficult to understand and admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive,“Tell me whom you love,”Houssaye wrote,“and I will tell you who you are.”1.How did 高考题型重组练(九)Ⅰ.阅读理解A[2019·海南五校一模]A newly married woman called Gilleece, saying she lost her wallet at his bar with her wedding ring inside. Gilleece looked through camera videos, watching the woman's every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Then a young man approached the bench and put something in his pocket. Gilleece posted several pictures on the bar's Facebook page, asking if anybody knew the guy.Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17yearold P rather. Prather admitted having taken the wallet because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but just took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks (码头) into the ocean.Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the bar. There, Prather said that, not getting along with his family, he had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece saw him as a kid rather than a criminal. But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could face prison. Gilleece planned to employ two divers to search for it. Meanwhile, the police wanted Gilleece to bring the teen to the station. He called them and said, “He's going to be at the docks with me tomorrow.”The next day a crowd gathered to watch the two divers search in the waters Prather mentioned. Finally a diver appeared with the wallet, and inside was the ring. Cheers burst from the crowd. The wallet's owner immediately dropped the charges against Prather. But troubled by Prather sleeping in the cold woods, Gilleece told the teen he could stay with him and his family until he stood on his own feet. He also gave the kid a job at his bar.“Most people would have given the videos to the police, but he chose to help me,” Prather told CBS News.【语篇解读】这是一篇记叙文。
一个离家出走的少年捡到一个钱包并因此陷入困境,素不相识的酒吧老板的帮助使他走上了新的生活轨道。
【难句分析】But troubled by Prather sleeping in the cold woods, Gilleece told the teen he could stay with him and his family until he stood on his own feet.分析:这是一个主从复合句。
troubled by... woods在句中作原因状语,he could stay with... own feet为省略了that的宾语从句。
译文:但是由于担忧Prather在寒冷的树林中过夜,Gilleece告诉少年他可以和自己与自己的家人住在一起,直到他能够自立。
【习语积累】 1.be on the case处理事件(尤指刑事侦查)We have two agents on the case.我们有两名探员在侦察此案。
2.stand on one's own (two) feet自立,独立When his parents died he had to learn to stand on his own two feet.他的父母去世后他不得不学会自立。
1.What happened to the newly married woman?A.She lost the wallet at the bar.B.She regretted charging Prather.C.She left her wallet on a bench.D.Her wallet was stolen by Prather.答案与解析:C 考查细节理解。
第一段说“she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Then a young man approached the bench and put something in his pocket”,由此可知Gilleece查看视频发现有个少年在这位女士坐过的长凳上捡到这个钱包,所以这位女士是在等车的时候把钱包落在了长凳上,因此选C。
2.Why did Gilleece take Prather to the docks?A.To find the ring he had thrown.B.To help the police to catch him.C.To help pay for the woman's loss.D.To let him apologize to the woman.
3.What did Gilleece do after the case was over?A.Rid Prather of the charge.B.Talk with Prather's family.C.Help free Prather from prison.D.Get Prather to work in his bar.答案与解析:D 考查细节理解。

4.Which Can Be the Best Title for the Text?A.A Wedding Ring Was RecoveredB.A Wallet Changed a Teen's LifeC.Anyone Can Make a DifferenceD.A Kind Woman Saved a Teen答案与解析:B 考查标题判断。
本文讲述了一个少年捡到钱包并因此陷入困境,酒吧老板帮助该少年脱离困境开始新生活的故事,因此B项最适合作本文的标题。
B[2019·洛阳市、许昌市第一次检测]Running may feel like a big task for most of us. But do you know our species has evolved to run better than any other animals on this planet? Cheetahs (猎豹) are the fastest land animals in the world. But do you know that humans can leave them in the dust? At least, in the long run, that's right. When it comes to endurance, we can outrun cheetahs, wolves and even horses. So what makes humans such endurance running superstars? The secret weapon is our sweat. We have 2 - 4 million sweat glands (腺) all over our body, which means we can run and cool ourselves at the same time. Having no fur is also a huge plus. In contrast, dogs rely on panting (喘息) to cool down, and other animals, like horses and camels, also sweat, but less effectively. As a result, they overheat faster and must slow down sooner. So, why did humans get to be such great endurance runners, anyway? Some experts believe this became important around 2 - 3 million years ago, when we started hunting. Because we couldn't chase down a gazelle (瞪羚) like a cheetah, early humans learned hunting.Studies show running can lower body weight and body fat. And the longer you train, the greater the benefits are. Just one year of training has been shown to reduce body weight by about 7 1bs, lower body fat by 2.7% and decrease resting heart rate by 2.7%.It may seem really hard, or even impossible to run a mile or a marathon. But in fact, you were born to go on that run. We all were.体裁:说明文题材:科学研究主题:人类的跑步能力【语篇解读】本文主要探究了人类天生具备的跑步能力。
