On my 13th birthday, my Mum gave me a signet ring with my initials (姓名首字母) carved into it. I was in heaven. What made it even more special was that it was about the only thing that wasn't being “replaced”. We'd been burnt out in fires that swept through our area earlier that year and had lost everything —so most of the “new” stuff (东西) we got was really just to replace what we'd lost. But not my ring. My ring was new. Then, only one month later, I lost it. I took it off before bed and it was missing in the morning. I was sad and searched everywhere for it. But it seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, I gave up and stopped looking for it. And two years later, we sold the house and moved away.Years passed, and a couple of moves later, I was visiting my parents' when Mum told me that she had something for me. It wasn't my birthday, nor was it Easter or Christma s or any other giftgiving occasion. Mum noticed my questioning look. “You'll re cognize this one,” she said, smiling. Then she handed me a small ring box. I took it from her and opened it to find my beautiful signet ring inside. The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some redecorations, which included replacing the carpets. When they pulled the carpet up in my old bedroom, they found the ring. As it had my initials carved into it, they realized who owned the ring. They'd had it professionally cleaned up by a jeweler before sending it to my mother. And it still fits me.21.The underlined word “in” in the first paragraph probably means “________”.A. fashionableB. availableC. practicalD. renewable (可再生的)22.When she got the ring back, the writer was about ________.A. 13 years oldB. 15 years oldC. 26 years oldD. 28 years old23.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The writer's family moved several times.B. The writer never stopped looking for her ring.C. The writer's ring was cleaned up by the new house owner.D. The writer lost her ring in the morning when she took it off.24.What would be the best title for the passage?A. My New RingB. Lost and FoundC. Lost and ReplacedD. An Expensive RingBHow to Study Smarter, Not HarderHere are some of our favorite study tips that will help any student study smarter, not harder:Recite As You StudyReciting — saying things ou t loud should first take place as you read through each paragraph or section. Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding.Take Fuller NotesNotes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words.Study the MiddleThe best time to review is soon after you've learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review.Sleep on ItStudy before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It's easier to remember material you've just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you've fallen asleep.Combine Memory and Understa ndingThere are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by rote. Ideas are best learned by understanding. The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again.25.You can notice your mistakes by ________.A. saying things out aloudB. taking notesC. studying the middleD. sleeping on it26.When taking notes, you should ________ to better help you with reading.A. underline important notesB. write notes in your own wordsC. take down every detailD. write as quickly as possible27.The writer advises you to ________ as it is easier for you to remember material.A. study after a period of activityB. do some exercise after studyingC. study as soon as you get upD. study before going to sleep28.Which of the following is NOT helpful for yourunderstanding?A. Thinking about an idea in different ways.B. Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know.C. Reading from the beginning to the end without stop.D. Going back to what first made you confused and start again.CIt does not have to be January 1st to give yourself a chance to make the most out of your day. Every day is a new day and a fresh start to learn, grow, develop your strengths, free yourself from past regrets or hurts, and move forward older and wiser. Every day gives you a chance to reinvent (重新审视) yourself. It is never too late to change things that are not working in your life. Each day is a new beginning and a piece of blank paper. How would you like to create your day? What would you like to paint on it? If you wake up in a negative mind, you are more likely to paint a dark picture throughout the day, and your picture will not show hope, happiness and joy.If you take each day to think actively, and have a positive intention for how you would like to create your day, how would your life be different? What can daily positive intentions do for you? Every day you will give yourself the gift of an “attitude of gratitude (感恩)”.Each day is a chance to look at things in a different way. You can experience each day in the beauty of the world — and the beauty of you who are in it! You find yourself changi ng from “I can't” to “I can”. With a focus on positive intentions, you feel you are full of power and more like a “winner” than a “loser”.You pay more attention to the present, and will be more likely to live fully in the present each moment of each day. After all, the past is a great place to visit, but you don't want to live there!
